    • Wellington’s number two bus route quietly goes electric
      • Noisy diesel buses are a thing of the past on the number two bus route, the first in Wellington to be fully decarbonised following the arrival of the capital’s 55th electric bus. Greater Wellington chair Daran Ponter said the council’s public transport wing, Metlink, was now more than halfway to its goal of having 108 electric vehicles (EVs) on the road by December 2023. “Metlink can be confident of reaching the target, making 22 percent of its buses electric by the end of next year,” Ponter said. “That’s one in every five.”

    • Review: Kick Up a FUS
      • In January 2023, the abrupt firing of 19 dancers at Calendar Girls Wellington made headlines. 35 of the dancers who worked there, wrote and signed a letter expressing their concerns over the venue's plans to take 50% of their earnings instead of the previous 40%. The next day, those 19 dancers lost their jobs. This incident sparked a larger movement among the fired dancers, leading them to form FUS - a grassroots organisation that fights against exploitative practices in the adult entertainment industry.       • Rongotai College was the most represented school at the NIWA Science Fair in 2023 which is a feat in itself. It exemplifies our "give it a go" attitude which was on display for the judges and the broader Wellington Community. Science Fair Boys The work presented was the culmination of many months of primary research for boys in Year 9 and some innovative product design from our Year 10 students. Projects presented by Rongotai students were really strong and innovative; as a result, we were not only the largest group attending, but also the most successful! In all, 12 awards were made to Rongotai College projects, with some projects winning multiple awards

    • Patea-Fereti to run out for 100th First Class Match as Pride Named to take on Waikato
      • The Wellington Pride conclude their 2023 campaign this weekend, as they head to Hamilton to take on Waikato on Sunday. Captain Jackie Patea-Fereti will run out for her 100th First Class Match, after reaching 75 games for the Pride earlier in the season. Patea-Fereti made her Pride debut in 2006, the year the Pride won the title. Coming off the bye week, Head Coach Fusi Feaunati has made some changes to the side that went down to Bay of Plenty. “We’re looking to put out a polished performance to end the season on a high, the girls have worked hard and deserve nothing less to wrap up the campaign” said Feaunati.

      • On Tuesday 14 February, Te Papa celebrates 25 years since opening with a new Rautaki | Strategy to take it forward into the future. The museum’s co-leaders, Kaihautū | Māori Co-leader Arapata Hakiwai and Tumu Whakarae | Chief Executive Courtney Johnston, and its Board led by Dame Fran Wilde have embraced a new vision for Te Papa to carry it forward for the next 25 years and beyond. By 14 February 2023, Te Papa will have welcomed more than 34 million visitors since opening. It cares for more than two million items, from ancient fossils to digital artworks, from tiny aphids to ocean-going waka. It consistently rates as one of the world’s best museums, and its approach to storytelling and indigenous knowledge remains a global model.

    • Half price fares to be extended on Metlink services
      • Metlink has welcomed the Government’s extension of half price public transport fares until the end of June 2023. The extension, announced today by Prime Minister Chris Hipkins, is part of the Government’s ongoing support intended to ease the cost-of-living pressures. Metlink Commercial, Strategy & Investments Manager Tim Shackleton said the half price fares extension would enable passengers to ready themselves for the eventual go live date for the Community Connect scheme which permanently reduces public transport fares for Community Services Card (CSC) holders by 50 percent. “With around 90,000 CSC holders in the Wellington region, Metlink has worked with the Ministry of Social Development to develop a system that provides quick and easy access to half price fares when the scheme rolls out,” says Tim Shackleton.

      • Good news for Tawa and Porirua public transport users: the Metlink On Demand trial has been extended to the end of the year. Metlink On Demand is an app-based service introduced to Tawa in May 2022, and extended to the Porirua CBD in June 2023. Passengers can order rides from small buses operating without set routes between around 600 flexible pick up and drop off locations or ‘virtual stops’. Greater Wellington Transport Committee chair Thomas Nash says the regional council’s public transport wing knows the service is well-used and loved by locals. “Metlink On Demand was born out of our commitment to connecting more passengers with public transport,” Cr Nash says. “We knew the Tawa hills and central Porirua were underserviced areas and that Metlink On Demand could help fill this gap.

      • Operation Details Date/Time:  Thu, 05/01/2023 - 09:30 - 21:30 Operation Type:  CG Operation (good samaritan) People Assisted:  2 Total Volunteer Hours:  84 38ft steel yacht got it's anchor stuck near Makara/Ohau. Whilst manoeuvring to release it they overheated the engine. They were unable to sail due to low wind and inexperience, so ended up drifting south in the strong currents. By the time we got to them they had drifted 10NM into Cook Strait, south of Karori Rock through the Karori Rip. It took us 5hrs to tow them back to Mana, by which point the tide was at it's lowest point. We had to put them on the mooring just outside the bar and then return the passenger back to base, leaving the skipper aboard.       • Operation Details Date/Time:  Sat, 07/01/2023 - 07:30 - 10:15 Operation Type:  CG Operation (good samaritan) People Assisted:  2 Total Volunteer Hours:  19 2 people in a small 3.5m dinghy were caught out by a southerly front coming through sooner than expected whilst fishing. They made the decision to abandon the return leg from Mana Island and took shelter on the island, calling Coastguard for assistance. They left their vessel anchored just off shore and swam to the beach where they waited. We nosed up on the gravel beach and picked them up. After ensuring they were in good health and providing them blankets to warm up, we approached the vessel near rocks and hooked the anchor line, pulling it up and out to deeper water. As we are in the business of saving lives and not risking them, swimming skills go hand-in-hand with surf life saving. Therefore we require Junior Surf members to attain this award so they can satisfy the mandatory requirement to compete with paddle boards in the Junior Surf Carnivals. A safety requirement is that children aged 9-13 years (U10 - U14 age group) must be proficient swimmers and have a 200 metre safety badge. This is advisable for U9s but compulsory from age 9 (Under 10s).  In view of the beach environment in which our activities are carried out, every effort should be made to ensure that all children have some swimming proficiency. It is expected that as children progress through their age groups, their swimming ability increases.  Children are not taught to swim at ‘Junior Surf’ Sunday beach sessions. Life Saving is an aquatic sport and it is strongly recommended that children participate in swimming lessons. Pool swimming is essential to develop the strength, fitness and confidence that they require to negotiate surf conditions. Children who swim regularly prove to be the most capable in the surf and ultimately gain the most from participating in a Junior Surf programme. The 200m safety award must be refreshed every year. Children who do not successfully meet the swim requirements will be unable to use the paddle boards and compete in the water events at junior surf sessions and carnivals until they obtain their current 200m badge.  Junior Surf athletes will need to swim 200m confidently (25m lane), followed by a 1 minute tread water, within the SLSNZ allotted time depending on their age.  U10/U11/U12 is swim 200m in 7 mins, tread water 1 minute U13 swim in under 5.5 mins, tread water 1 minute U14 swim in under 4.5mins, tread water 1 minute 200m BADGES Badges are to be sewn (carefully) onto your competition cap. If your child(ren) has completed the 200m swim a badge can be collected at sign-in at junior surf sessions on Sunday mornings. <!-- --> PARENTS / CAREGIVERS IN THE WATER U7 AGE GROUP is an age which, at Lyall Bay with its variable wave height and harsh conditions, is unable to be left to just the coaches and lifeguards. U7 athletes require a parent/caregiver to be in the water with them at all times. U8 - U9 AGE GROUP we ideally would like a parent/caregiver in the water or water edge ready to enter if required,  If your child requires extra assistance in the water, please enter the water with them, rather than assuming our volunteers will be able to look after them. Please note:  Our club relies heavily on the active involvement of parents, the club cannot function without people volunteering. Kids love to see their parents/caregivers interacting at the club. Parent/Caregivers participation is encouraged in the water at all ages. This is a great way for parents to be actively involved, it’s a great way to increase your own water confidence and have FUN. (b)    Junior Surf - Sunday is Junior Surf day during the season from October to March.  Preparation for Sunday sessions is essential with a keen eye for detail.  You will need to assemble a ‘sign-in’ team to – 1.    Manage and maintain the Junior sign in sheets; 2.    Undertake second hand clothing sales; 3.    Ensure clothing samples are available; and 4.    Assist with clothing orders when necessary.  5.    Ensure lanes are booked at WRAC for the 200m Badge and Pool Champs. 6.    Manage the 200m badge process. As we are in the business of saving lives and not risking them, swimming skills go hand-in-hand with surf life saving. Therefore we require Junior Surf members to attain this award so they can satisfy the mandatory requirement to compete with paddle boards in the Junior Surf Carnivals. A safety requirement is that children aged 9-13 years (U10 - U14 age group) must be proficient swimmers and have a 200 metre safety badge. This is advisable for U9s but compulsory from age 9 (Under 10s).  In view of the beach environment in which our activities are carried out, every effort should be made to ensure that all children have some swimming proficiency. It is expected that as children progress through their age groups, their swimming ability increases.  Children are not taught to swim at ‘Junior Surf’ Sunday beach sessions. Life Saving is an aquatic sport and it is strongly recommended that children participate in swimming lessons. Pool swimming is essential to develop the strength, fitness and confidence that they require to negotiate surf conditions. Children who swim regularly prove to be the most capable in the surf and ultimately gain the most from participating in a Junior Surf programme. The 200m safety award must be refreshed every year. Always are great FUN day! Lifeguard Sport have Whitehorse #2 on Sunday 11 December, venue TBC. We have the Junior Surf Series #2 Carnival on Sunday 18 December at Titahi Bay. We encourage all Maranui athletes (U8’s and above) to attend carnivals. These are super fun events where athletes test their surf skills against other clubs. Information will be sent in the next week or two. Although Mother Nature, more specifically water quality have set new challenges our coaches, kids and parents have all adapted well to sessions. A few people have asked about our sessions when water quality is deemed unsafe to swim. For those at Sundays session I explained we will run sessions when Land, Air, Water, Aotearoa (LAWA) deem the water quality unsuitable for swimming with a modified programme that mitigated risk and reduces our participants time in the water at a depth where they are at risk of ingesting water. If on days where water quality is poor you as a parent don’t feel comfortable with you child in the water feel free to miss those sessions. We want the kids & parents  to have fun & feel safe. Our sport relies on volunteers and at the moment we are in a transitional phase and find our selves in a position where we need more coaches and officials. If you are keen to get involved please do catch me for a chat. Is coaching for you? Are you enthusiastic, fun and like helping our youngsters grow in sport? U7 athletes require a parent/caregiver to be in the water with them at all times. U8 - U9 AGE GROUP we ideally would like a parent/caregiver in the water or water edge ready to enter if required,  If your child requires extra assistance in the water, please enter the water with them, rather than assuming our volunteers will be able to look after them. Please note:  Our club relies heavily on the active involvement of parents, the club cannot function without people volunteering. Kids love to see their parents/caregivers interacting at the club. Parent/Caregivers participation is encouraged in the water at all ages. This is a great way for parents to be actively involved, it’s a great way to increase your own water confidence and have FUN. The impacts on community junior sport is being felt with participation across all sports nationally down I am excited to see our membership holding tight. This is don to the amazing work of our Board, volunteers and families. Junior surf has one main purpose and that is to grow our lifeguards of the future. All the fun we have week in week out, the carnivals and the xtra development sessions are all designed to be fun, engaging and grow our children who participate whatever age & stage they are. We as a club can not do that with out family support and volunteers. Thank you for joining us on this fun journey. Our first session is Sunday 6th November. Once all our cubbies are signed in and away with our coaches for a warm up I invite all parents to join us in the club lounge for a welcome to the club catch up. This is for all parents new & returning. Our development sessions for our U11-U14 cubbies are now underway, these are open to any athlete keen for more time in the water to grow their skills and anyone keen to head to Oceans in 2023. Please drop me an email if you are interested. More development opportunities for kids and parents will pop up over the season so keep you eyes peeled. As for any community sports club we are always looking for new & enthusiastic parents to join us coaching, officiating, co-ordinating age groups at carnivals or just to do some of those ongoing tasks through the sessions and on a weekly basis…. Cleaning the club at the end of sessions, hosing equipment at the end sessions, helping coaches with equipment, clearing sand out of the boasted…. The tasks are endless, jump in, help out and if in doubt ask one of us for a pointer.  See you all on the 6th November…. All clubbies should be swimming - we don't teach athletes to swim. As we are in the business of saving lives and not risking them, swimming skills go hand-in-hand with surf life saving. Therefore we require Junior Surf members to attain this award so they can satisfy the mandatory requirement to compete with paddle boards in the Junior Surf Carnivals. A safety requirement is that children aged 9-13 years (U10 - U14 age group) must be proficient swimmers and have a 200 metre safety badge. This is advisable for U9s but compulsory from age 9 (Under 10s).  In view of the beach environment in which our activities are carried out, every effort should be made to ensure that all children have some swimming proficiency. It is expected that as children progress through their age groups, their swimming ability increases.  Children are not taught to swim at ‘Junior Surf’ Sunday beach sessions. Life Saving is an aquatic sport and it is strongly recommended that children participate in swimming lessons. Pool swimming is essential to develop the strength, fitness and confidence that they require to negotiate surf conditions. Children who swim regularly prove to be the most capable in the surf and ultimately gain the most from participating in a Junior Surf programme. The 200m safety award must be refreshed every year. Children who do not successfully meet the swim requirements will be unable to use the paddle boards and compete in the water events at junior surf sessions and carnivals until they obtain their current 200m badge.  Junior Surf athletes will need to swim 200m confidently (25m lane), followed by a 1 minute tread water, within the SLSNZ allotted time depending on their age.  U10/U11/U12 is swim 200m in 7 mins, tread water 1 minute U13 swim in under 5.5 mins, tread water 1 minute U14 swim in under 4.5mins, tread water 1 minute 200m BADGES Badges are to be sewn (carefully) onto your competition cap. Small flexi tubs are great to put all your wet gear in.  Wetsuits are optional, but we recommend full length wetsuits are worn as Wellington waters are hardly tropical. U7 athletes require a parent/caregiver to be in the water with them at all times. U8 - U9 AGE GROUP we ideally would like a parent/caregiver in the water or water edge ready to enter if required,  If your child requires extra assistance in the water, please enter the water with them, rather than assuming our volunteers will be able to look after them. Please note:  Our club relies heavily on the active involvement of parents, the club cannot function without people volunteering. Kids love to see their parents/caregivers interacting at the club. Parent/Caregivers participation is encouraged in the water at all ages. This is a great way for parents to be actively involved, it’s a great way to increase your own water confidence and have FUN. Here at DCM, there isn’t a closing down time, as we continue to support the most marginalised and vulnerable members of our community throughout the Christmas and New Year period. You may have seen other social services in the news talking about how they are finding that people are harder off than ever before. We’re finding this too at DCM. While milestones are being met, we know that the housing crisis is not over yet, and the people we meet here at DCM continue to be among the most economically-impacted members of our community. Fortunately, our incredible team – DCM’s hard-working kaimahi – makes sure that our whānau are not left on the bottom rung of the housing ladder. While our people may face significant challenges amidst the cost of living crisis, our team ensures they have access to the supports they need to thrive. We have two significant opportunities this year to ensure our whānau also have a voice on the national stage – the March census and October general election. We will do everything we can to make these opportunities accessible for our people, including having a polling booth right here at DCM, just as we did in 2020 when over 100 whānau voted, many for the very first time. We hope you will also ensure your voice is heard at the general election, so that the progress that has been made to tackle homelessness in Aotearoa is maintained. Behind our team are the many unsung heroes of DCM. In this update we share the story of Fahimeh, who has been collaborating with DCM to build our capability, so that we can continue doing what we do – but do it even better. DCM is taking part in Neighbours Aotearoa and will be leading waiata in the park every Monday and Friday at 9am for the next few months. If you're in the neighbourhood, join us! <!-- --> Unsung heroes of DCM Solving problems with Fahimeh Fahimeh McGregor loves to solve problems. And she certainly has the skills to do so – with a doctorate in the adoption of IT for performance and productivity improvement from AUT (Auckland University of Technology), she has 19 publications and 42 citations to her original family name, which is Zaeri. Fahimeh was born in Iran in the strategic town of Bandarabbas, on the Persian Gulf. Fahimeh was the youngest of seven siblings, and describes her early family life as very difficult. “I’m a revolution baby. The Iran Revolution happened in 1978 and was followed by a war between Iran and Iraq, which makes me part of the war generation as well. This took place during my primary schooling, and as my city is located in the south, close to the border – a port on the Gulf – it had a huge impact.” There was a lot of trauma for Fahimeh and her family. She describes nights without power, with all access to utilities cut for hours, while having to do her homework next to a little oil lamp. “Years later, I realised that I never had any wishes as a child. We had family wishes, which were to make sure that in the morning all of us would get to have another day together. There was no certainty, or an understanding of what a stable life is. Here in New Zealand, people have got a very natural stability – unless, perhaps, they are experiencing hardship and homelessness.” Fahimeh at five years old - the only photo from her childhood. Fahimeh’s big inspiration was her father. He was highly educated for his time, leaving his farming background to do a diploma in literacy and accounting. As Bandarabbas is such a significant port city, the Iran government feared it could be lost, and though 90% of trade came through the port, profits only went to the capital, Tehran. Fahimeh’s father tried to protect the rights of his community. “But after the revolution, he came under a lot of pressure,” Fahimeh reflects. “He had to give up everything. The only memory I have from when I was two years old was the night we had to burn his books. That picture is still in my head. I am always asking myself, ‘Why? What’s wrong with his books?’” Fahimeh’s father died from a heart attack at a young age, but he continued to inspire her. “He loved his community. He believed in change. That’s why when I got my first job, I put my community's rights at the top of my list.” Fahimeh went to university in Iran, where she met many people appointed to their first position by her father. She started volunteering – always a passion of Fahimeh’s – and later got a job working for the Ministry of Housing and Urban Design, where she worked hard to introduce transparency within a corrupt system. “I was quite hot-headed. I was young and thought I could change everything. I did my best, whatever I could, but my mum realised it wasn’t a safe environment for me. She tapped me on the shoulder one day and said, ‘You need to leave this country’.” Realising she wouldn't be safe any longer, Fahimeh left Iran. She moved to Malaysia in 2010, where she continued studying toward her Master's Degree. This was supposed to take two years, but Fahimeh finished her Master's in 14 months. Despite not knowing anyone, Fahimeh’s next destination was New Zealand, where in 2013 she picked up her studies at AUT thanks to a scholarship. With a doctorate added to her name, Fahimeh soon turned her attention to giving back. “I want to be utilised for the community. That’s the most important thing for me. I want to make sure that wherever there are challenges, I can help people and organisations.” Fahimeh started her industry experience by applying her research in a large infrastructure project, Waterview Well-Connected Alliance. She was then offered an innovative leadership role by Fletcher Building, to lead a continuous improvement culture in the New Zealand International Convention Centre (NZICC) project. Always wanting to create her own consulting business, Fahimeh later formed a company called DELTA Informed Decisions, which brought her to DCM. Fahimeh met with DCM Manahautū Stephen, to collaborate on solving the challenges of DCM’s processes and systems. “I had regular meetings with Stephen,” Fahimeh says. “I needed to hear what he is passionate about. He is a very driven person and wants to deliver quality outcomes that drive improvement.” Fahimeh with DCM's Kaiarataki Kāhui. From there, Fahimeh met with DCM’s Kaiarataki Kāhui (leadership group), guiding them through a collaborative process to identify how DCM can best work towards its strategic goals. While Fahimeh has the knowledge and expertise, it was the leadership team that needed to ensure everything was moving in the right direction, to allow DCM to engage in a meaningful way with whānau and other stakeholders. Fahimeh also spent time with many other kaimahi. “First is people. I listen to the language, and pick up different lenses people have got. Everyone is like a big ocean to me. There’s so much you can discover to help shape a better practice model.” With DCM’s new organisational model and strategic goals implemented, it was time to look at some technology solutions to help pull this 53-year-old social service into the modern world. One of Fahimeh’s first projects was tackling DCM’s long-time Money Management Service. Fahimeh started with a diagnostic phase, analysing the efficiency of the processes to gain an understanding of where opportunities for improvement may lie. While DCM’s kaimahi may not have known it, all of Fahimeh’s tools are science-based. “Everyone downloads their knowledge to the table,” Fahimeh says. “People around the table will often say, ‘Oh! I thought it was this way, not that way?’ And it can be frustrating in a way, because I have to ask a lot of questions!” Another project Fahimeh has undertaken is the adoption of an entirely new database system for DCM – Exess. While it may not sound very exciting, DCM is completely reliant on data and evidence to gain insights into the whānau they are working with, and trends that are happening with homelessness in Wellington. For example, did you know that DCM engaged with 1,085 whānau last year, of whom 647 experienced homelessness, and 230 went without shelter altogether at some point during the year? Or that 71.6% of all DCM whānau are male, and that 52.8% are Māori? Importantly, it is this kind of data that DCM needs to report back to the powers-that-be. Exess is now in its testing phase, and DCM looks forward to the massive improvements this information management system will achieve for the organisation, especially with its whānau-centric outcomes model. Fahimeh has enjoyed her time at DCM, which is why she has given back by donating her valuable time in-kind. “DCM has its challenges, but this has been the most enjoyable and rewarding project I’ve done,” Fahimeh shares. “You guys have got a passion for people. I can feel your heart beating for your whānau. That’s quite fascinating to me – everything is about them. Businesses often say they are customer-centric, but it’s not as tangible as you experience at DCM.” Fahimeh and Stephen. Fahimeh is saddened by the current situation in Iran. She recently went to Turkey to help two of her nieces escape the country. Both are now safely in Istanbul – one registered at high school, and the other at university, continuing the family’s passion for education. “It’s another revolutionary time in Iran. It’s really sad to see what is happening. What I always say is that I wish for peace in the world. And not just for the Iranian people – everyone deserves a peaceful life. And that is true for the whānau DCM is supporting too. Living outside, sleeping out, is so damaging for your health. View this email in your browser Tis the season for Afterwork Orienteering and our Christmas AGM Mihi nui kia <> Our start to spring has been a bit quiet locally but now we have plenty of news for November! Next weekend is the 37th Anniversary of the Wayne Cretney Classic, organised by Bryan Teahan. It’ll be a true endurance event using new maps around Mornington and Berhampore. Red medium, Orange, Yellow and White courses on-the-day courses are still available. We also have a club events in the pipeline, including afterwork events at Onslow College on Wednesday 15 November and Te Herenga Waka VUW campus on Wednesday 29 November. Orienteering Hutt Valley will also offer some afterwork events before Christmas and the annual Big Trig rogaine on Sunday 10 December. See you at the next event! Paul Teesdale-Spittle President Club achievements at Nationals Orienteering Wellington can celebrate a number of achievements from the NZ National Orienteering Championships held in Hawke’s Bay recently. Many members placed well, especially some of our veteran runners. Here are some of the standout achievements – which in no way overshadow the satisfaction and personal success all runners should feel irrespective of where they finished. In the sprint, Lauren Wills came first in W40A, as did Gillian Ingham in W65A, Neil Kane in M75A and Don Locke in M85A. Mattias Bengtsson took second place in M10, as did Lisa Bengtsson in W40A and Dorothy Kane in W75A. In the middle distance, Yvette Baker took first in W50A. So too did Gillian Ingham in W65A, Neil Kane in M75A and Don Locke in M85A. David King took second place in M60A, as did Kate Fortune in W75A. The long event on the Tuna Nui map was a standout whereby seven members came first in their grades: Katie Cory-Wright in W21A, Lisa Bengtsson in W21AS, Sarah O’Sullivan in W35A, William Power in M40AS, and David Middleton in M55AS. Gillian Ingham and Neil Kane took triple crowns, coming first in their classes too. Lara Molloy was hot on Katie’s heels coming second in W21A, as did Lauren Wills in W40A, Yvette Baker in W50A, and David King in M60A. We have a lot to be proud of from this year’s Nationals, and can look forward to taking spirit of fun and success to Rotorua next year. We’ll confirm the venue and details soon but our gathering tends to include plenty of time for orienteering antics, food and socialising as well as business. The Fortune Cup for service and Endeavour Cup for performance are also awarded. On the topic of business, club officers must be elected. I, Lachlan, and Gerald are all happy to stand again as president, secretary and treasurer respectively but equally happy to step aside if you’d like to have a go. Sarah O’Sullivan to lead ONZ Congratulations to Sarah O’Sullivan, who has been elected Chair of Orienteering New Zealand from December! Sarah was our own club president immediately before Paul and has been active in the club for many years. Sarah runs elite grades at major events. We’re really excited for Sarah and know she’ll lead ONZ extremely capably. She is the second woman to hold the position of chair after our own Jane Harding. Here she is modelling the new club kit! Technical tip: Visualise the circle When you look to the next control, how well can you picture exactly what your approach will look like? To know precisely where the control will be placed you need to convert the map into an image in your mind of how the terrain in the control circle will look. Watch the video about developing a clear mental image of stepping stones and handrails, how they relate to each other and how you will flow through them. You should flow though control sites just as you flow through the rest of the leg. Content provided by Orienteering New Zealand Fitter, faster, better together! Magnus Bengtsson and Lizzie Ingham are continuing with group interval and sprint training at 6pm Tuesdays. You’ll get to build fitness running along the flat, up hills, or maybe a mix—and doing intervals as a group is much more motivating than doing intervals on your own. This training is primarily for Orienteering Wellington members but anyone is welcome to attend for free. The location is movable, so email Magnus if you’re keen. Looking ahead: Major events in 2024 Sprint clinic Orienteering Wellington will hold a Sprint Clinic on Saturday 20 to Monday 22 January (Wellington Anniversary Weekend) on local sprint maps. This is deliberately held ahead of the Oceania Sprint Championships but will be useful for any runner looking to develop their sprint skills. Find out more about the Sprint Clinic Oceania Sprint Champs 2024 Oceania is a trans-Tasman sprint championship, next year hosted by Orienteering Taranaki with their Lonely Mountain Sprints (26-29 January) and Auckland Orienteers with the Auckland Triple Crown (3-6 February). Lonely Mountain includes six sprints as well as a knock-out championship and relay championship, while the Triple Crown has three sprint races and Oceania Sprint Championship. Enter or find out more about Oceania 2024 NZ National Orienteering Champs in Rotorua Nationals 2024 will be held by Orienteering Bay of Plenty in Rotorua and Taupō over Easter (Friday 29 March – Monday 1 April).       • Ngā Kōrero - Latest Stories from DCM Lives and smiles transformed at the DCM Dental Service communities where whānau are housed, connected, valued and thriving About Us Contact Lives and smiles transformed at the DCM Dental Service DCM’s emergency dental service has been operating since March 2016 – and is the only dental service of its kind outside of hospital emergency departments in New Zealand. Over 800 individuals have had their lives and smiles transformed thanks to the expertise of DCM’s volunteer dentists, led by Dr. Sophie McKenna, our lead dentist. Volunteer dentist Dr. Sophie McKenna leads DCM’s Dental Service. (Source: 1News.) Sophie’s father was a dentist, and she worked with him as a dental assistant during the school holidays. By the age of 17, she had decided that dentistry was a good path for her. Marrying Andrew, a fellow dentist, and working in different practices in the Wellington area, the two were able to share work and parenting responsibilities. Sophie first heard about DCM at a New Zealand Dental Association branch meeting, putting her name forward as a volunteer. “DCM was a surprise to me,” says Sophie. “I didn’t expect to receive so much pleasure from helping the whānau with their dental care. “When I first began volunteering, our son was dealing with significant health challenges, and I was at a low point. To come into DCM and see good people working hard to improve themselves from their very low points, with the support of DCM staff, was humbling and put my own woes into perspective.” Sophie explains that many of the people coming to DCM’s Dental Service need fillings, periodontal work, and extractions. “They often come to us with broken and missing teeth. When you are experiencing homelessness, living from crisis to crisis, oral health care may fall lower on the priority list, especially due to the expense. “But the big key to DCM’s success is not that treatment is free – but that DCM makes marginalised people feel so welcome when they come here. They don’t feel judged – and that includes when they sit in our dental chair.” Sophie treats Ngata during an emergency dental session at DCM. (Source: 1News.) “I’ll say, ‘what’s the most important thing that I can help you with today?’ And they look astonished,” says Sophie. “They are normally told to lie back, open up, and then a health professional gives them a carefully worded lecture about what isn’t being done, how disastrous things are. “And that’s not we’re here for. We’re here to make them feel better.” We know that poor oral health has been linked to gingivitis, oral infection, heart disease and strokes. But additionally, aesthetic issues can affect your ability to eat and speak – with a huge cost to your self-esteem. DCM Manahautū (Director) Stephen Turnock says that most of the people DCM works with have missing or decayed teeth, and the feelings of shame around this can take a toll. “When someone is continually looking at the ground, and not wanting to smile or feeling whakamā, then that creates more barriers.” This is why in 2023, we have begun creating dental impressions (diagnostic models or moulds) on-site at DCM and fitting whānau with partial plates – often of upper teeth. Sophie has been joined in this initiative by her husband, Andrew, who is no longer able to practice dentistry on his own due to an injury. Still wanting to support DCM, Andrew is able to assist Sophie in various ways. Sophie shares how life-changing their work has already been. Toko before and after. Toko was someone with missing incisors – the most visible teeth in the upper mouth. Sophie and Andrew created a mould and fitted him with replacement teeth. “Toko was exceptionally happy with the partial plate, and his ‘after’ smile filled the room!” says Sophie. Another person whose smile has been transformed is Lisa. Lisa has experienced homelessness, including rough sleeping, before she was housed through DCM’s Aro Mai Housing First service. From there, she was able to focus on her wellbeing, including her oral healthcare. Lisa before and after. Sophie had to encourage Lisa to do a ‘before’ photo while smiling so we could compare the results. “Now she can’t stop smiling!” Sophie says. When DCM first met Simon, he had little to smile about. DCM Outreach workers Ngaire and Hazel approached him on the street in Kilbirnie, where he says he was at his lowest ebb. “DCM saved my life, literally” Simon explains. “If there’s a God, it was great timing on all fronts.” Simon also survived the Loafers Lodge fire. On the tragic night, he knocked on people’s doors, urging them to evacuate, while managing to escape with his phone and wallet, and the clothes on his back. After a move into transitional housing, Simon was able to concentrate on other pressing matters, including agonising dental pain. He popped into DCM one day, and met Ali Janes, who coordinates our dental clinic. Ali got Simon in to see Sophie and Andrew, who extracted the problem teeth. “You could really see the difference it had made for him, which was awesome,” says Ali. “He left pain free and basically floated out of here!” Simon was left with very few teeth, but Sophie and Andrew supported him through the life-changing process of getting a full denture. “I’m still learning to smile properly, which is something I haven’t done for a long time,” Simon explains. “But – I can almost look in the mirror again. “When I needed DCM the most, you guys have always been there. Now I’m trying to pay it forward.” Simon popped into DCM to show us his new smile. DCM’s new initiative creating replacement teeth for whānau has been supported by a $5,000 community grant from the New Zealand Dental Association. “My vision for DCM’s Dental Service is that we are able to expand our services a little,” says Sophie. “Ideally, we would like to offer more opportunities to replace teeth that have previously been extracted, as we’ve been doing with the grant this year. “Currently, relief of pain is great, but what can we do to support our lovely people and lift them up even more? It is obvious from the beaming smiles of Toko, Lisa and others that restoring their smile boosts their sense of worth. Society inadvertently judges those with missing teeth. “When someone’s smile is restored and they feel and look good, they project a confidence and positivity that is difficult to measure. It is infused in their posture, their willingness to engage with others – and we see that their approach to issues that challenge them is altered for the better. “It’s a no-brainer to try to help with this more.” We mihi to Sophie and Andrew McKenna for their passion and professional expertise as they help to transform the lives and smiles of our whānau. Metlink currently has 450 buses in its active fleet in the Wellington region 10 of which are EVs, making up two percent of the fleet.  Once the 98 buses are added to the fleet the proportion of EVs will rise to 22 per cent which, excluding market leader China, is high by international standards. Seventy-three of the buses will be used on current scheduled services with a further 25 to be progressively added to routes to meet future network growth. The new electric buses will eventually take 61 diesel buses off the roads, leading to a 17 per cent drop in carbon emissions and a similar reduction in harmful emissions. Greater Wellington is delivering on its promise of a building a modern low emission bus network according to Chair Daran Ponter. “I’m sure that people across the region will be pleased to see another 61 diesel buses taken off the road and this will drive real climate benefits by deploying the new electric buses on high use areas of the network. “Just like our plans for rail, this is also about ensuring we have a fleet in place that can cope with rising population trends and demand for public transport over the next few years.  That’s why 25 buses will be used to accommodate forecast passenger growth without an increase in emissions,” added Chair Ponter. Climate Committee chair Cr Thomas Nash said we have to provide attractive alternatives to our current 20th century car culture if we’re serious about responding to climate change. “Over the last two decades transport emissions rose by 14 per cent across the region, mainly from fossil fuel burning cars and trucks.  “We need a real step change here and we know we can move far more people with far fewer vehicles if we provide high quality public transport. A modern, comfortable low emission fleet will play a key role in attracting new passengers, encouraging them to embrace public transport. We’ve got an opportunity to break free from the car-dominated landscape that’s been driving pollution in our cities - let’s take it,” added Cr Nash. Roger Blakeley, chair of Greater Wellington’s Transport Committee, said that the new fleet will also attract more bus drivers to the region. “This new fleet shows our intentions for growing the network and obviously more buses means more drivers.  We want buses that drivers can be proud of and these state of the art buses, many fitted out right here in New Zealand, will help us attract drivers that want to be at the forefront of the public transport industry in New Zealand and internationally.” As part of the deal, NZ Bus will source 67 ready-to-go large single decker EVs from China and Tranzurban will build 31 double decker EVs at Kiwi Bus Builders in Tauranga, with parts sourced from world leading Chinese bus manufacturers. NZ Bus CEO Barry Hinkley said he was delighted that NZ Bus was making a significant contribution to NZ’s environmental performance, commenting that growing the number of EVs in its fleet is the right way forward as NZ Bus looks to a future of reduced fossil fuel usage. "With these 67 new electric buses, NZ Bus is proud to be having the largest EV bus fleet in New Zealand. With these new orders, we will see our EV fleet grow to at least 85 buses in the short term. "Obviously, we all should try and do as much as we can to look after our environment; taking public transport is a great way of reducing emissions, and electric public transport is an even better way. “We’re committed to doing our bit to help reduce emissions in New Zealand and at the same time provide people with a safe and easy way to get around,” said Mr Hinkley. Tranzurban Director Keven Snelgrove said today’s announcement is a clear demonstration of the company’s commitment to partnering with Greater Wellington and pioneering and investing in electric bus technology and infrastructure in New Zealand. He says the 31 new double deck EVs add to the company’s fleet of 10 New Zealand-built double deck EVs successfully in operation in Wellington already. “This new fleet will deliver multiple benefits of being New Zealand built, adding to our modern and reliable electric bus fleet and help reduce carbon emissions and air pollution for Wellingtonians.” The buses will be delivered between mid-2021 and early 2023.

line-height:150% !important; } } Throwing in the patch for a life growing larger with Keri, and Census week at DCM communities where whānau are housed, connected, valued and thriving About Us Contact Life growing larger – Keri’s story Keri has a large number 13 tattooed across his right cheek. It’s unmissable – but it’s slowly starting to fade as Keri undergoes laser tattoo removal. “It’s been a bit of a process,” Keri reflects. “I’ve done six or seven sessions now. Got three or four to go – do them every six weeks. “It fuckin’ hurt getting it put on – but getting it taken off! Yeah, it’s not really getting easier…” Keri is working with DCM’s Aro Mai Housing First team, and his key worker Riley has been accompanying him when he goes in for tattoo removal procedures. Keri has been judged harshly for his tattoo, with many people and organisations unwilling to engage with him. He explains why this might be. “Number 13 is Mongrel Mob. We do all of our patchings on the 13th.” But Keri threw in his patch six years ago – and he hasn’t looked back since. Keri and Riley. Photo by Mary Hutchinson. Keri was born in Hamilton, and along with his brother was adopted out. He describes family life as up and down – but not too bad. “I grew up with a Māori father and a blue-eyed, blonde-haired Pākehā mother, so you’ve got the best of both sides!” The family ended up moving to Rotorua, where Keri’s father worked as a school principal. Despite his father’s job, Keri describes school as “shitty”. “I just hated school – only went for the bone carving. But that was only an hour a week.” Keri started hanging out downtown, where at around 12 or 13 years of age he began to engage with the Mongrel Mob. For Keri, it was like gaining another family. “Gang life was good. Just like having brothers,” he says, while adding, “The young ones have burnt a lot of bridges over the years.” It is those in-between years that Keri doesn’t like to talk about much. He is too focussed on the future to dwell on the past. In the past there was prison, violence, and injuries. Keri wanted change – which led him to Te Aro Health Centre. Photo by Mary Hutchinson. Te Aro Health shares DCM’s kaupapa in every way. People are not talked down to, or judged, when they visit Te Aro Health. Instead they are welcomed, and experience respect. For Keri, this was a game-changer, and led to a phone call to Regina for help with housing. Regina was Keri’s first key worker at DCM, and they quickly found they had a close connection. “I was couch surfing with my sister in Strathmore,” Keri explains. “Straight across from me lived Regina. I used to go diving with her husband! When I went to DCM I finally met her – then I clicked!” Regina sorted out some emergency housing for Keri. Despite the dire state of emergency housing in Aotearoa, for Keri, the stability that comes with having a roof over your head meant everything. From there Keri rapidly went from strength to strength, and he now has his own whare thanks to the Aro Mai Housing First collaboration, which involves moving people from homelessness into housing then providing wraparound support and regular home visits to ensure people can sustain their tenancy. “Keri’s super self-sufficient in a lot of ways,” Riley shares. “Because he is really well connected and supported in his community – and with his whānau as well. So he will ask mates for help when needed – or they’ll offer – which is awesome. “Our help has mostly been with finances, kai, stuff like that – and connections to services. Assistance with filling out forms and explaining information.” Former key worker Regina was blown away to learn of Keri’s progress. “We can always offer support – anyone can do that – but it’s whether or not the individual chooses to take hold of that support. And it takes a lot of humility – especially, I know, for a man of Keri’s background – to be able to come to that place where he knows that he needs to accept it.” Keri is connecting with his community, with his kids – and he’s even got to know the landlord. In the future, he wants to start carving again, in his own whare. “Life has got a hell of a lot better – especially since I met you guys,” Keri says. “Everyone at DCM has treated me well.” Riley has now moved into full-time study, and so Keri will work with a new DCM key worker, Raya, who will continue to accompany him for his tattoo removal procedures. Keri filled out the 2023 Census with Raya’s help. This was his first time doing the Census, and after Raya explained how important it is to be counted, Keri found it comfortable and easy to complete. Riley shares, “Keri has always been the same guy. Always charismatic and confident, and able, but watching him settle into being housed again, so he can have the confidence to have his kids over, has been awesome. I’ve seen him blossom and flourish in slow but steady ways. “Life for Keri is growing larger – bit by bit.” WORDS: MATTHEW MAWKES / PHOTOS: MARY HUTCHINSON / DCM. <!-- --> Tatau tātou – all of us count Census week at DCM The Census allows us to reflect on who we are as a country. We are each a thread of the interwoven fabric that makes up the rich tapestry of Aotearoa. The whānau we work with here at DCM – those experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness – are an important part of that tapestry. We know that they have a lot to give, but that outcomes in health and housing aren’t always the greatest for them. And so we wanted to ensure they were counted in this year’s Census – just as we did in 2018 – because tatau tātou, all of us count. Benna Seveali'i-Siolo and Graham Streatfield from Stats NZ. Stats NZ joined us at DCM for the week of 20-24 February, during which 70 whānau were assisted to fill out the Census, either in private rooms or in the courtyard, on paper or using a tablet with a Stats worker supporting them throughout the process. We know that without support these whānau may never have had the chance to take part, and it is thanks to the wairua of the Stats NZ workers that our whānau were both comfortable and empowered to fill out the Census. A member of the Stats team commented that it was important to make sure “This community is not forgotten”. When asked how they felt about their time at DCM interacting with our whānau, another Stats worker commented that the conversations they had here were “Amazing and worthwhile” – a real highlight of the experience as a whole, and something that they had not experienced anywhere else. Whānau even shared some of their life stories with the Stats team while they filled out the Census – a special moment of whanaungatanga between the team and whānau and an “Interesting and fulfilling experience”. Many whānau filled out the Census in DCM's courtyard. Here Lua assists Monty to complete the Census on a tablet. Whānau recognised the importance of taking part in the Census. They strongly wanted their “Voices to be heard” and felt “Our word counts”. Being able to fill out the Census in a safe environment with familiar staff and access to the usual services running at DCM was important in making the Census a positive experience. Goodie bags and kai helped too! Some whānau were harder to reach than others, but overall they saw the Census as an opportunity to contribute directly toward government feedback and initiatives. Whānau found the Census to be “Simple and non-invasive” and “A positive experience”. For some, taking part in the Census was an act of service to others, as collecting information “Is important for people in the same situation as me” and for “People who have been on the benefit for a long time”. This was because information from the Census plays a large part in “Deciding where the money goes”. During the week we were delighted to see some of our deaf community assisted to take part in the Census, both with the help of DCM staff with sign language skills, and the Stats team themselves. We were continually surprised to see other whānau with a great mistrust of government take part as well. Graham assists Smurf to fill out the Census. One such person was Smurf, who experienced trauma at an early age at the hands of the Cyprus government. Through his relationship with DCM, built upon layers of trust and mutual respect, he was able to see the benefit in filling out the Census and found it to be a positive experience, this being the first time he had ever done it. Smurf found it “A lot easier than I first thought – I thought it would be more personal than it was”. Graham helped support Smurf to fill out the Census, sharing parts of his life story and reassuring him of the confidentiality of the information shared. Smurf’s is just one of 70 such stories shared during DCM’s Census week, and we thank Stats NZ for lifting up the mana of our people. Cyclone Gabrielle has had a big impact on this year’s Census, and we know the Stats team have been under a lot of pressure. We also lift up our whānau for having the courage to take part. Their stories are taonga, and the data they have provided will help build a better Aotearoa where everyone has the chance to be housed, connected, valued, and thriving. The next few decades of human development will depend on big data, AI, genetic editing, quantum computing, space travel and other fields that are, in essence, entirely dependent on mathematics. Quantum particles are too small, space too far, data too plentiful and AI too unpredictable to experiment on these things in traditional ways. Scientists in these fields typically no longer rely on experimental data to tell them what is true or not, instead, they rely on the language of mathematics' ability to describe the world. But is this trust justified? What are the differences between science and mathematics? And where does God fit in? Even though St John’s achieved an “accounting surplus” for 2021/22, a large deficit of $400,000 is budgeted for 2022/23. This arises because of:• The need to inflation protect the Trust Fund – high inflation and low returns means very limited real returns are expected this year• Insurance costs are $176,000 (plus GST) for the year – a $20,000 increase on last year and a 50% increase over the last 3 years• Repairs and maintenance – painting the manse, washing the buildings on the St John’s site, and the repair of the Church reception roof have added to costs this year• Higher salaries arising from market demand and the intention to fill the youth and children’s ministry vacancies• A significant decline in annual congregational giving of about $60,000 compared with 2018.Some of these challenges, such as insurance, will require a regional or national approach, as other Churches are facing similar cost challenges. And some of these challenges are ours. Giving should be a joy that reflects our faith and enables our worship, ministry, mission and outreach. Jesus talked about money a lot. At least a third of his teaching was about money and property related matters – the incidents of the rich young ruler and the widow’s mite are forthright in their implications. Jesus did this because he knew that many of those he spoke to considered money more important than the Kingdom of God.
