    • Who’ll be voting for more annual increases in our rates?
      • Soon after the government announced its tax cuts, the Wellington City Council moved in the opposite direction and announced its annual increase in rates. Last week’s announcement tells us that the rates for Wellington home owners are going up by an average of 5.75 per cent. The increase is even higher than than the figure which the council announced a month ago – when it said that 5.5 per cent was to be the increase for home owners.

      • With a brief flurry of media attention last week, and typical fluffy media attention more on Miley Cyrus than the ideas inside, the Wellington 2040 vision was confirmed by a Council meeting. Today, there will be the opening of two container consultation stations (one in Te Aro Park and one on the Waterfront?) which will unveil some of the report. And finally, next week, the public may get a chance to really see what has been proposed.

    • Mentoring announced for three Urban Dream Brokerage projects
      • <figure class=" sqs-block-image-figure intrinsic " > 'We Spoke', Candace Smith, Performance Arcade, Wellington, March 2018 Letting Space's Urban Dream Brokerage service is thrilled to announce three artists and projects in Wellington that have been given mentors in a new peer-to-peer mentorship programme for artists working in new spaces in the city.  Candace Smith will be mentored by artist Vivien Atkinson, who works across a variety of media and is known for her work with The See Here and Occupation Artists (website here). Candace's series of public works has commenced with installation 'We Spoke' at Performance Arcade, in which the public generated energy with a bicycle,  operating fans within a transparent space,  sealed from the wind, which gently moved mobiles made from umbrella parts (themselves deconstructed by the wind). A performer joined the work in response to the cyclists at night. Candace is interested in creating installations of reassembled objects which explore ideas around the fragmentation and reconnection associated with migration. Rosie White and the project Playdate will be mentored by Jo Randerson, artist and co-producer of Barbarian Productions (website here). White has recently completed a Masters of Fine Arts at Massey's College of Creative Arts and will work with collaborators' on a project that is a work of craftivism or art activism, concerned with a social issue: slavery, with specific concern to the significant numbers of people in the world today trafficked for sex. New Zealand says Rosie is not exempt and the project will seek to highlight the issue. Visual artist Mark Antony Smith and his project The Lost Future Exchange will be mentored by theatremaker Leo Gene Peters of company A Slightly Isolated Dog. This is a project Mark Antony is starting in 2018 to gather stories, dreams and remembrances of place in the central area of Wellington. It is an evolution of Ghosting About a project he did for his Masters study at Massey which included work 'Imperial Ghosts' concerning Dixon Street's Imperial Building for Lux Festival. Mark Antony Smith's previous shows also include Black Dog: Failure at Toi Poneke Gallery 2015. We hope to announce a fourth mentored project shortly. Porirua City Council update Nathan explained that the District Plan has been approved, and PCC is now taking feedback and submissions on it; it will go into action in early 2021. PCC is about to start running workshops on the Long Term Plan. A workshop is being held tomorrow with NZTA regarding the plans for revocation of SH1 and SH58 post-Transmission Gully. Matters arising Iain, Kate and Nikky met to discuss the Village Planning survey. Kate has since talked to PCC about whether they will pay for design, advertising and printing. The hope is to get the survey circulated soon, and to organise a drop-in session one Saturday at St Mark’s. The intention is to present the results at this year’s AGM. Financial $0.14 interest has been received this month. Correspondence No correspondence has been received. Progress on action items Action: Bill/Jon to discuss options for cloud storage. The Committee confirmed a strong preference to use a free public service, rather than a paid service. Penguin survey Pauline Morum forwarded an email from Glenda Robb at the Kapiti Coast Biodiversity Project. A survey will be carried out in late September with a penguin dog, to track the local little blue penguins. Glenda has offered to do a brief talk at the September Committee meeting. Action: Paul to respond to Glenda and invite her to talk at the Committee meeting on 8 September.Action: Jon/Nikky to promote meeting/talk online.Action: Iain to look for name of DOC contact person re the installation of new signage about keeping dogs on a lead at the beach. Waste Free PKB Waste Free PKB’s collections have been extended to include metal beer bottle caps and wine bottle tops, metal jar lids, metal and plastic drink bottle tops, milk bottle caps, bread tags, can tabs, eyeglasses, facial skincare product packaging (plastic and glass containers plus lids, droppers and other complex closures), and writing instruments (including pens, felt tip pens, highlighters, markers, mechanical pencils and correction fluid – but not wooden pencils and chalk). This is in addition to the collections that have been in place since January 2019, which includes oral health products (toothbrushes, clean and empty toothpaste tubes and dental floss containers), AA and AAA batteries, and a number of different brands of coffee capsules. Action: Bill to investigate possibility of recycling computer equipment. AGM The AGM needs to be held in October, probably after the October committee meeting (scheduled for 13 October). It was suggested that Glenda Robb be asked to present the results of the penguin survey. Action: Paul to investigate a suitable date for using the School and Community Hall. Other business NZTA are keen to further extend Ara Harakeke; the next stage is from Pukerua Beach Road along SH1. A surveyor will be considering a possible route so as to avoid the slope and zigzag.       • <figure class=" sqs-block-image-figure intrinsic " > Have you ever held a moth in your hands and it left glittery powder on your fingers? You might not be able to see it, but that powder is in fact tiny scales. Like feathers, those scales create pockets of insulation to keep the moth warm and provide heat for better muscle regulation during flight. They also provide camouflage through shimmering colours and delicate patterns. Just as lace can disguise the body, while simultaneously revealing everything. Armed with just a scalpel, Julia overlays delicate floral, botanical, and geometric lace patterns with moth silhouettes, leaving behind a sprinkling of tiny paper scales in her wake.       Profile Julia Scott is a Wellington-based artist who specialises in paper art, with each piece meticulously cut out of paper by hand.   Drawn to intricate paper collages while working towards a BFA, she also creates large scale hand-cut street maps by commission. She currently spends most of her time trail running with her dogs, working in environmental communications, and volunteering with the Remutaka Conservation Trust. @julia_scottbeetham

Open Evening and 2021 enrolment We welcomed over 400 families and whānau to our open evening last Monday on what was possibly the coldest night of the year. Our team of student and staff guides took tours around the campus, students were actively involved in promoting different areas of school life, and everywhere was alive and buzzing with activity. Enrolments are now open for 2021. Our enrolment process starts online at: https://portal.whs.school.nz/index.php/enrolment. Tamatha Paul – lunchtime lecture The Feminist Club was delighted to welcome Wellington Councillor Tamatha Paul to deliver this Thursday’s lunchtime lecture. Tamatha (Ngāti Awa / Waikato Tainui) was first elected to Council in 2019 and is one of three Pukehīnau / Lambton Ward counsellors for 2019-2022. As an independent candidate, Tamatha campaigned on issues including zero waste, connecting communities and the importance of prioritising future facing leadership. As can be seen from these pictures, Tamatha’s visit attracted a large audience, keen to welcome and listen to her.         Year 10 Computing – Photoshop and political discourse Students in Gus Donaldson’s Year 10 computing course have been developing skills in Photoshop through working on a project on the theme of political discourse. Their work is currently on display in the foyer outside the library. The posters, with the narrative from their creators alongside them, are powerful pieces of work that clearly exemplify the students’ views and response to current issues in the world around them. The display will remain in place at the start of Term 3 and you are invited to come and view it.              WHS Ink – Junior Art club zine 30 Year 9 and 10 students have been working on their own artwork during each week’s WHS Ink sessions. Coordinated by Teacher Aide, Connor Morrison-Mills, this group of talented students’ work is now included in their very own zine. Click on the image below to see more. Outdoor Education’s snowy tramp It has been cold enough for many this week, with the storms and freezing winds around Wellington. The Outdoor Education students showed their mettle by heading out on a tramp in the Tararua range earlier this week. They made it as far as the Powell Hut before the weather conditions made it too risky to continue and they turned back.              Achievements He Kākano – AWD Tenpin Bowling On Thursday 2 July, He Kākano students competed in the annual AWD Tenpin Bowling competition against students from other Wellington colleges. All students and staff had a fantastic time and there were some really strong bowlers in the group. The top three WHS students were Talib Prime, Darius Ngature and Joshua Nathan.              Roxy5 finalists ‘En Passant Films’ and ‘Look Away’ are both WHS finalists in the Roxy5 film competition this year. Screenings will take place on Friday 31 July at the Mclaurin Theatre, Victoria University. The winner will be announced at the Red Carpet awards evening at the Roxy Cinema on Wednesday 5 August. We are waiting eagerly to to see whether The Work of An Artist (En Passant Films) or Hey Cassie (Look Away) will scoop a place. Sports Boys 1st XI Football On 27 June, our boys 1st XI football team beat Newlands College 4-0, taking them to the top of their pool. This Saturday the team will play St Patrick’s second team. If the team win or draw they will go into play-offs on 18 July against either Onslow College or Wellington College for a place in the Youth Premier Reserve. Good luck team!

      • While it was vaguely entertaining / terrifying / gratifying / intimidating to listen to some of the 10-hour debate on the Spatial Plan the other day (pick your own adjective according to your political persuasions), what became very clear is that NO ONE – not the Mayor, not the Council Officers, Not Liam Hodgetts the City Planner, and certainly not the rabid band of Councillors – have any idea about height limits that is bounded by any semblance of the actual factual truthiness of the situation.

      • It’s wonderful to see that the dreams of East by West Ferries have come true, with the launching of the Ika Rere, the brand new electric ferry that will ply its way from Wellington to Eastbourne and back. It is a striking design, with the twin prows of the catamaran almost vertical for chopping through the waves of the harbour, and a vibrant acqua / turquoise colour scheme all over, tying in with the branding of Meridian, electric company / weather forecast sponsor.

      • On Saturday the 18th of May, Inflection Point, which identifies itself as “a group for middle NZ that has become ‘The oppressed majority’”, hosted an event at Wellington's Tākina convention centre. The event, titled ‘Unsilenced: Middle New Zealand on Ideology’, was attended by a delightful collection of virulent anti-trans campaigners, including the frothingly homophobic culture war ‘apostle’ Brian Tamaki, celebrity bigot ‘Posie Parker’ (via video-link), Tanya Unkovich, a current MP for NZF, and Simon O’Conner, a former MP for National.

      • Demolition of the City to Sea Bridge could be imminent, if Wellington city councillors have their way. They seem determined to proceed with demolition without further consultation with the public, though consultation is planned in the “single vision” document released this week. At their briefing last Wednesday on the future of Te Ngakau/Civic Square, some councillors supported and not one objected to a proposal by staff to seek legal advice on whether the Council ‘has to’ consult over demolition.

      • How sweet. The competition to name the Inner City "Bypass" has been won by Te Aro School, with the name "Karo" Drive. Apparently, "The K represents the kids, Aro their school. Karo is also a small native New Zealand tree that produces sweetly scented red flowers in Spring and grows very well in Wellington". Maybe it's just me, but I don't usually associate "sweetly scented red flowers" with a bloody great arterial road that's been shoved through a city neighbourhood.

    • Plum position
      • As anyone who frequents Cuba St should know, Plum has been undergoing renovations for a while. The old Plum had been well-liked (as these reviews attest), but was starting to feel a little tired: perhaps somewhere between the late Krazy Lounge and Mr Bun. I expected little more than a lick of paint and some new furniture, so it's a bit of a surprise to see it in its sleek new incarnation by Alistar Cox of Matterhorn, Mojo and Mighty Mighty fame.

      • Zephyr Rovers Manager Steve Hall has admitted this evening that his key enforcer Colin "Chopper" McIntosh was nursing an injury and was in doubt for the clash on Monday against Whites. "The lad's been a bit of a marked man since his name got into the media as our hard man" said Hall "he got targeted a bit by Ten Left Feet and he's now nursing an ankle injury". Hall said that he'd expect George Nash to step up into the enforcer role.

    • My Brilliant Divorce Production Diary - Sound Design
      • Sound Designer, Gil Craig, recorded the voice overs on Wednesday morning and supplied a small set-up with the help of House Technician, Marc Edwards. This allowed us to test the recordings on a basic level in the rehearsals. From here Ginette and Geraldine discovered it didn't quite fit the picture they are trying to create.This is a technique often used by Sound Designers to test out their ideas and ensure they are on the same page as the Director.

    • A New Farm for Ohariu
      • It has been confirmed that Meridian Energy plans to build a new wind farm in the Ohariu Valley, with 31 turbines across 4000 hectares. The proposed site is owned by 5 farmers, who banded together in 2002 to negotiate proposals with various energy companies. Talks had stalled over price issues in 2003, but recently an agreement has been reached. Having met with the community last night, it is unclear whether the project will face significant opposition from the local residents.

    • Late-night shenanigans are back on the menu!
      • There was a while in 2005 when you knew that on Friday and Saturday nights you could go to Indigo, and they'd be open, and there'd be Nixx-Til-Sixx spinning everything from Bloc Party to Motley Crue and you could drink until 6am. And then that stopped and it sucked. Fast foward to now though, and in 2008, Indigo is now San Francisco Bathhouse, and Nixx-Til-Sixx has been replaced by the fabulous DJ Doofus, but the same thing is happening.

      • Wednesday 17 March 2010: Comedians ruled the stage before lunch as  Jerome Chandrahasen and Derek Flores entertained students with their stand-up comedy. With Dave Smith, they were promoting the Class Comedians show and workshops, where students from around the region get their chance to be comics.       • The new Lady Liz arrived in Wellington on Saturday to be greated by a group of local Wellington boaties. She is a catamaran and is slightly larger than the previos Lady Liz. Capable of speeds in excess of 30 knots she looks set to provide a great platform for the Wellington Harbour Police to continue their outstanding service to the Wellignton commnuity. She will be officially welcomed to the city at a function at Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club later this month.

      • Wednesday 17 March 2010: A mix of culture, athleticism, music and sprituality came together at Stream today as we celebrated St Patrick's Day. Liturgies for Junior and Senior students retold the story of St Patrick and his mission in Ireland with song by the Pasifika Choir. Cross country runs warmed the blood on a brisk Silverstream day, with Fletcher Greaves (Year 9 Patrick), Steven Boyle (Year 10 Patrick), Ben Phillips (Year 11 Marist) and Shaun Smith (Year 12 Marist) taking the titles.

      • Operation Details Date/Time:  Mon, 27/08/2012 - 10:45 - 11:45 Operation Type:  SAROP Cat 1 People Assisted:  0 Total Volunteer Hours:  3 Reports of  a kayak overturned in Porirua Harbour with two people in the water.  CRV Pelorus was launched and searched along with the Police vessel Alpha and helicopters.  No people or kayak were located - only sightings were of driftwood debris and marker buoys.  Search terminated by Police.
