    • During the month of August, Stokes Valley Volunteer Fire Brigade responded to a total of 13 incidents.  We attended six fires, from the very small (a smoking light-fixture) to the extremely large "4th Alarm" factory fire in Petone on the 23rd August.  We also attended four medical emergencies during the month and there were three false alarms. Even with another fairly significant (magnitute 6.6) earthquake on 16th August, the Wellington region seemenly dodged another bullet and the brigade had absolutely no earthquake-related incidents to attend to.  Let's keep our fingers crossed that that remains the case for many, many years to come! • • Aground on sand bank in Paremata Harbour

    • Operation Details Date/Time:  Fri, 13/12/2019 - 20:00 - Sat, 14/12/2019 - 23:00 Operation Type:  CG Operation (good samaritan) People Assisted:  5 Total Volunteer Hours:  162 A 6m runabout ran aground on a sand bank returning from a day of  ski biscuiting and wake boarding in Paremata Harbour (Pautahanui Arm of Porirua Harbour)  at approximately 2:45pm today. Due to the falling tide it had to remain there for the day and we returned the owner back to it at 9pm to retrieve it. We used MR2 to tow it off the sand once the water level was high enough and safely returned to the launching ramp between the bridges.     • Operation Details Date/Time:  Sat, 22/10/2022 - 11:10 - 13:05 Operation Type:  CG Operation (good samaritan) People Assisted:  2 Total Volunteer Hours:  5 Ref: 10466 MRC 2 x POB on new jetski, had a mechanical/electrical failure. Ski had launched from Paramatta Bridge, moved to Titahi Bay and then had the failure. Ski was anchored but no local assist available. TAR engaged with master revalidation. Capability issue reviewed with the assessor and task undertaken. On scene advice given to try a restart but ski failed to operate. 1 POB from ski taken onto TAR and the ski with 1 POB assisted close to shore.     • Operation Details Date/Time:  Tue, 02/03/2010 - 23:30 - Wed, 03/03/2010 - 00:30 Operation Type:  SAROP Cat 1 People Assisted:  0 Police received a call from a member of the public regarding a sighting of a light flashing intermittently off the coast of Plimmerton towards Mana Island. Coastguard Mana were tasked to go out and search for the source of the light to ensure that it was not a distress signal. A yellow "special mark" was found floating near the "reef" in the entrance to Plimmerton. This mark was a research buoy that had a yellow flashing light on top of it that flashed the sequence of 5 flashes every 15 seconds. • • Slipped anchor causes collision in Porirua Harbour

    • Operation Details Date/Time:  Tue, 05/02/2013 - 09:00 - 10:00 Operation Type:  CG Operation (good samaritan) People Assisted:  2 Total Volunteer Hours:  5 The Harbour Master requested the assistance of Coastguard Mana to help resolve a situation caused by severe southerly winds overnight.  A catamaran in Porirua Harbour had slipped its anchor and drifted into a trimaran moored nearby.  Both yatchs were caught together and the strong southerlies had caused the trimaran to puncture the cat above the water line. The owners were on board and declined assistance.     • Operation Details Date/Time:  Tue, 04/06/2019 - 07:00 - 09:00 Operation Type:  CG Operation (good samaritan) People Assisted:  2 Total Volunteer Hours:  12 A yacht had come from Nelson overnight, hit a storm in Cook Strait and decided to run into Porirua Harbour at night. Tired crew and insufficient local knowledge meant that they did not follow the lights and ran aground several times on the way before sticking on the sandbank outside the Marina on a rising tide with the wind blowing them onto the breakwater. MR1 with 4 crew attended, putting 1 crew on the yacht to assist, towed them to deep water. From there she then motored safely into the breastworks outside Mana Cruising Club.     • Operation Details Date/Time:  Thu, 21/01/2016 - 11:00 - Tue, 02/02/2016 - 13:00 Operation Type:  SAROP Cat 1 People Assisted:  4 Total Volunteer Hours:  1160 Smasher, a 27" Pelin motor launch split its hull coming off a wave as it was leaving Porirua harbour (vicinity of the outer reef). Smasher was in transit with another vessel which stood by her Mana Rescue1 was tasked to support by police The owner was able to put the vessel ashore on Mana Island (just north of shingle point) before MR1 arrived on scene. MR1 was able to confirm that the crew of smasher were safe, then start to render assistance to strip the vessel and secure her on shore and stern to sea.     • Fare changes are coming soon for passengers aged 24 and under, following the government’s decision to withdraw funding for age-based concessions. From 1 May 2024, following the rollback of the former government’s age-based concessions on Metlink services: children aged 5 to 16, or older if still at secondary school, will pay half the adult fare, fares for people aged 17 to 24 will return to full price, unless they qualify for an alternative tertiary or Community Connect concession, under 5s will continue to travel for free on all services. Greater Wellington Transport committee chair Thomas Nash says the change will be felt by young people and whānau across the region, who are already struggling with the high cost of living. “I don’t want to end these concessions – we know they have made a big difference to people,” Cr Nash says.

    • The Upper Hutt P2 mens team which has the largest squad in the past eight years found itself unusually short on Saturday - with only one sub. Still, Playing against Varsity, last years P2 winners, the team fought well. Victoria scored some very good goals (and luck seemed to be on thier side!). Upper hutt lost 5-1 in a game that could have been alot closer with us narrowly missing the goal on at least two occasions. Varstity broke away and scored very quickly on occasions but the general feeling amongst the team was that we dominated posession but unfortunately did not convert it into points. The jubilant celebrations from Varsity every time they scored was a tribute to the quality opposition they were up against. Goal was scored by someone who would like to remain anonymous (modest chap!) Murray

Please let him know if you want to help.  Matairangi Fun Run, 23 February Hataitai Velodrome,  Open to the public, the Matairangi Fun Run, based on Mount Victoria, runs over the iconic Vosseler Shield course. There are two race options: the One Loop Race (5 km); or the Two Loop Race (two 5 km loops, adding up to 10 km). Each loop has approximately 190 metres of elevation. McVilly Shield Relay, 7 March, Karori Park The McVilly Shield is the first club event for the season and a great way to get to know other people in the club. This relay has teams of three people each. Everyone can participate, runners, walkers, J Team, seniors, masters and friends of the club. Just turn up and we will find you a team. You can either race it or use it as an opportunity to do some training.  Each team must do ten laps of Karori Park. No individual team member can do more than four laps. But you can do the laps in any order you like. The race is randomly handicapped after the teams start. Notices Join this week and save $20 or more Join or re-join Wellington Scottish at Round the Bays this year and you get $20 off your new season of Scottish full adult membership (down from $185 to $165). Location (estimate) varied between 6NM of coastline between Makara and Little Titahi Bay. Limited comms from victim via 1 cellphone that was down to 20% battery. Information very confused and unreliable. Started with coastline search and trying to identify potential lights. Received TXT indicating we had gone past them and they had drifted further out near Mana Island. Spotted a orange flickering light about 3NM in the distance. • • Broken down runabout discovered while searching for another

    • Operation Details Date/Time:  Sun, 07/11/2021 - 18:30 - 21:30 Operation Type:  CG Operation (good samaritan) People Assisted:  6 Total Volunteer Hours:  12 Whilst searching for a vessel that had broken down with 4 pob and requested a tow home as a non-member we discovered another one that had broken down on "the  bridge" near Mana Island. We marked their location and told them we would be back for them once we had located the first vessel.  We found the first vessel under tow by someone else coming back into the channel.     • Most Metlink buses in Wellington city and Porirua will use their Saturday timetables on weekdays from 4 to 27 January. Routes 13, 28, 33, 34, 35, 36, 37, 12e, 30x and 31x will operate their normal weekday schedules during this period, while After Midnight services will also operate as normal on Saturday and Sunday mornings Services on routes 81 and 84 between Eastbourne and Wellington are suspended until 29 January. Routes 39 and 32x will also cease operation until 29 January, however, a shuttle will connect Island Bay and Houghton Bay at 10-minute intervals during the morning and evening peaks on weekdays. Metlink has reduced bus timetables in this way to give customers certainty. Because of the national bus driver shortage, and at a time when many of us, including drivers are taking leave, the reduced schedules will help operators meet demand and minimise unplanned cancellations.

MR1 with 5 x crew responded Sea conditions were very rough and confused, wind gusting 45 knots, breaking seas of 2.5-3.5 metres in the navigation channel and the route to Titahi Bay. A call was made to CG Mana base to not send MR2 on the tasks as the seas were to dangerous for the smaller CRV. MR1 carried out a barrier patrol and creeping line search of the S.A.D area. Nothing was located Search was called off by Police. Conditions There was a strong crosswind blowing from the new clubrooms across the field to the North. There was the usual low-sun for this time of year to contend with for both teams. OBU played from right to left as we viewed from the clubrooms side. A couple of changes to the run-on team announced on the Club Rugby website. Taine Plumtree was out with a minor injury. Same Godwin gets a start. Josh Thomas, in his premier debut, was wearing the 22 Jersey and Tiaki Fabish switched to 21 pushing Matt Sleith to 20 (I think). Notable Performances Shamus can’t seem to keep his name off the scoresheet this season. Another 3 tries for him taking him to joint top of the try-scoring leader board in Wellington club rugby! Sam Reid had another solid game at centre and picked up a brace of tries. The Waimea wanderer, Caleb Delaney, notched a couple of tries and was a powerhouse around the field in the set-piece and loose play. Matt Fowler played a full match and claimed to be even more shattered than he looked at the end. Nevertheless, he was into everything from sniping runs around the phase plays to mighty defensive covering tackles. The whole front row was on fire especially with the ball in hand, Kenan Gillson taking the reward of a try on behalf of the engine room. Special mention for late replacement Sam Godwin who started in Taine’s place and got on the scoreboard early on with a well-taken try. A typically abrasive performance from Sam! How the Game Unfolded Minute What happened Score 1 Min OBU run it back strongly from the kickoff but get penalised for holding on 5 Mins OBU worked into the Avalon 22 but get penalised for offside in the backs. Avalon takes the quick tap and hit it up with one-off ball runners. But the OBU defence is strong and they don’t really go anywhere eventually knocking it on for an OBU scrum. 7 Mins Shamus takes it off the back of a solid scrum. There is some great inter-passing between the forwards and inside backs. Eventually, it is turned over and kicked out. 9 Mins From the lineout, it is taken up the middle. Reece crashes in through the centres. Avalon is penalised for offside. OBU elect to take the scrum. 10 Mins Shamus makes another strong run off the back of the scrum and is under extreme pressure but somehow manages to keep going forward. Avalon infringes at the ruck. 12 Mins Callum crashes over about 8m from the left-hand touch. The conversion just misses floating directly over the top of the right hand upright. Unlucky! OBU 5-0 18 Mins There is a series of pick and go’s at the try line by OBU. Eventually, Sam Godwin breaks the deadlock to score it near the sticks. Conversion is successful. OBU 12-0 23 Mins After 6 or so phases near the Avalon line, Shamus takes the ball back around to the left and scores it. Conversion is successful. OBU 19-0 29 Mins Some nice play by the OBU backs. Dale drops a little inside pass to Sam Reid who crashes over the top in the tackle to score. OBU 26-0 34 Mins Disallowed try after a foot in touch! It started from a great run inside the OBU 22. Olly got the pass from Reece to run it in, but out! 39 Mins There is a long-range try finished off by Shamus. Conversion misses. OBU 31-0 Halftime 41 Mins Starts off with OBU on a long period of attack with Avalon holding on well. Eventually, the pressure becomes too much and Shamus sneaks it in under the sticks. Conversion is successful. OBU 38-0 44 Mins There is a series of great offloads in the centre of the pitch has the Avalon defence at 6s and 7s. Ty Poe gets the try under the sticks. The conversion is successful. OBU 45-0 47 Mins OBU forwards mount a drive at the line which is then spun to the left. Sam Reid crashes over the line. Conversion is successful. OBU 52-0 48 Mins Josh Thomas takes the field along with Izzy Foai for his premier debut. Congratulations Josh. 55 Mins Kenan Gillson carries the ball strongly into the 22 and it is then recycled a few times from the ruck. Eventually, Kenan takes the reward for his endeavours to score in the corner. Dale lands a tough kick back upwind to register the conversion. OBU 59-0 56 Mins Fui, Kenan and Shamus are subbed off. 60 Mins Caleb Delaney gets a well-deserved try after the ball is moved into open spaces in the middle of the pitch OBU 66-0 65 Mins A few changes and a lapse in concentration allows Avalon to crash over in a pick and go on the OBU line. Conversion misses. OBU 66-5 70 Mins There is a lineout drive and OBU score the try. I couldn’t see who scored it but by subtraction, it must have been Caleb Delaney again(Waimea College forever)! The conversion was successful. OBU 73-5 79 Mins Reece juggles the pass initially but gets it off to Tiaki Fabish who scores it. The conversion was unsuccessful! That’s the final score!     • What a sensational Port Nicholson Regatta! With over 170 Sailors and 30 boats on the water, including over half a dozen visiting boats with 4 Sports Boats from Auckland, RPNYC delivered an event members can be proud of! The Port Nicholson Regatta opened with the Lawson’s Dry Hills Charity Cup Race on Thursday, followed by a convivial Regatta Dinner and presentations to Britannia Sea Scouts, Wellington Free Ambulance, and Live Ocean. It provided opportunity to acknowledge the fantastic support from our sponsors who help make things better and easier: Yamaha, Crombie Lockwood, Lawson’s Dry Hills, Mt Gay, Steinlager, North Sails, Burnsco, Pivotal Print, Barton Marine, Havana, Mevo, Chaffers Marina, and Whittaker’s. The event delivered three days of intensive and rewarding regatta racing in perfect weather. Impeccable race management led by John and Linda Parrish, was ably supported by our support crews and assistants. Notably Marg McVeagh, Janine Small, Julie Bate, Carole Inkster, Phil Taylor, Mel Zytecka and Ashley Owers who were out on the water for the duration of the event. Not forgetting Kim McMorran of course, for our brand new marks. After the relentless start sequence to get 44 races away in 4 divisions over three days (plus the 8 starts in the Lawson’s Dry Hills Charity Cup Race), there was silverware to award.     • Kilbirnie School is holding a Fabulous Fun Run on Thursday 26th May at 1pm to encourage kids to be healthy and have fun! This event is co-ordinated with the cross country season so the kids are currently practising their running and keeping fit! Dress up is a HUGE part of this event! There will be awards for best costumes, so if you want to take part as your favourite superhero or book character, get creative and WOW the crowds! There will be ice blocks at the end after the event for the kids to re-hydrate and we encourage any families to come down and support the kids and join in the fun (please wear masks). or pick up a form at the school office.     • <figure class=" sqs-block-image-figure intrinsic " > Come down to support the IBU Shark's first team in their second pre-season game of 2020 this time against Wellington United from the Capital Premier League. This game is a particularly special one as it features Leonardo Villa, who most of you will know simply as Leo, playing for the opposition.  Leo is our head junior coach and is often seen around Wakefield nurturing our 5-15 year old junior and youth players.  For the junior players out there, one of the absolute treats of having Leo around is being able to witness him playing the “beautiful game”. You are unlikely to see a player in our local competitions like Leo, having played to the heights of Serie B in the Italian league over several seasons.  To see Leo gliding about the field directing, intervening and playing defence splitting passes is to see the work of a master.  His feline presence on the field is truly the embodiment of Argentina’s famed Puma, prowling the midfield!   Good luck Leo, but not too much - the Sharks are going to be here to play!
