      • In this weeks edition of 'Meet the Crew', we meet one of our most unassuming, ever reliable and always smiling members.     • Meet the Crew: FF Kat Smith
      • Today in "Meet the Crew”, we meet the first of two female members in our brigade, Kat Smith.  Kat won firefighter of the year in 2015 and is our current Welfare officer, a very busy lady indeed. Name:  Kat Smith Rank: Firefighter Length of service:  4 years, 3 months (as at 1st June 2016) Nickname/s:  Kitty Kat, Station Mum, Mum, Katniss Employer:  Abbott Bin Hire Ltd / Gasfitting & Plumbing Services Ltd Why she joined:  To give Rich (husband) a break every Wednesday night... No seriously, I saw a notice saying the brigade were recruiting and needed some new volunteers. So I came down, met with the Chief and never looked back.

      • Stokes Valley Volunteer Fire Brigade's 75th Jubilee is happening this Queen's Birthday Weekend!  The official programme for Saturday's public events is as follows: 9:00am Street parade starts travelling from Stokes Valley RSA to Stokes Valley Fire Station 10:00am Open Day begins at the fire station 10:30am Ladder display 11:00am Kitchen fire display and Wainuiomata VFB Competition Team display 11:30am Road Crash Rescue demonstration 12:00pm Kitchen Fire display and Wainuiomata VFB Competition Team display 12:30pm Boom display 1:00pm Grand Finale                         Please note timings are only a guide and may be subject to change

      • Look at what's been popping up in shop windows and schools in and around Stokes Valley over the last few days!  This is the official flyer that we're using to promote our 75th Jubilee.   The promotional blurb reads as follows: Come and celebrate our 75th Anniversary!!! Stokes Valley Volunteer Fire Brigade is celebrating its 75th Anniversary this Queen's Birthday Weekend. We're having a party and you're invited! Date: Saturday 30th May 2015 Time: 9:00am to 2:00pm The day will start with a street parade of approximately 30 fire trucks and other fire-related vehicles down Stokes Valley Road, ending at the fire station. Between 10:00am and 2:00pm, our doors are open for you to come and have a wander around the station, meet the firefighters and view our fire trucks. There will be a huge range of things going on throughout the day, including displays from the Aerial trucks, the Bomb Squad, Road Crash Rescue and many more. You'll also be able to grab a sausage from the sausage sizzle and purchase some of our 75th Jubilee memorabilia (EFTPOS facilities available). What better way is there to spend your Saturday than by joining us at Stokes Valley Fire Station for our 75th Jubilee party?!!  We hope to see you there!       • Stokes Valley Volunteer Fire Brigade would like to invite all former members (and their partners) to register their interest in attending next year's 75th Jubilee dinner.  As previously posted, the formal dinner will held at Silverstream Retreat on Saturday 30th May 2015. We will use the results of this pre-registration process to get an early indication of how many people are likely to attend the dinner and the two social events we will be hosting at the fire station.

    • S.V.V.F.B.'s 75th Jubilee - May 2015
      • On 11th April 2015, Stokes Valley Volunteer Fire Brigade will celebrate its 75th Anniversary.  We are now in the early stages of planning a Jubilee weekend (including a formal dinner) that will recognise this significant milestone of the brigades's history.  The weekend that has been chosen is Queen's Birthday weekend (Friday 29th to Sunday 31st May 2015). We would like to invite registrations of interest from anyone who would like to attend one or all of the events that we have planned over the weekend. Although we are planning activities that the general public can be involved in (such as an Open Day), there will be limited places available for the formal dinner.  For this reason, we would like to encourage all former members of the brigade (and their immediate families)    

    • Our volunteers do Stokes Valley proud
      • Stokes Valley volunteer firefighters Ben Horn and Renee Moffit did our Valley proud when they completed the race up Auckland's Sky Tower in full firefighting gear on May 17. Ben completed the race - 1103 steps, 51 floors - to the top in 18 minutes and 43 seconds and Renee made it in 20.07, bettering her first two attempts with the Newlands brigade by two to three minutes. They were among the 700 participants.

    • Call-out stats - November 2013
      • During November, the brigade was alerted to a number of suspicious scrub fires in and around the hills of Stokes Valley and Taita/Pomare.  This disturbing trend has now continued into December with a major scrub fire in the hills above Waterloo last night that kept the Fire Service personnel busy for several hours. These deliberately-lit fires are putting lives and property at risk.  We would like the Stokes Valley community to be extra-vigilant over the summer and report any suspicious behaviour to the police.       • Every Wedenesday evening, members of the brigade gather at the fire station to participate in ongoing training to keep their skills up and to learn how to deal with various emergency situations. Last Wednesday, the 27th November, a major training exercise was set up in George St (just around the corner from the fire station). The exercise was well-organised by Firefighters Stuart Berkeley and Byron Dennis. Byron had this to say about the night's events... "Workmen in a container with power tools locked-in by other workmates as a joke - then there was an explosion. Attended by Stokes Valley 431 and 432. Thanks to all those that helped and attended. Was a lot of fun had by all and the smoke-machine in the container worked well... along with the fake legs and blood!" We had our regular photographer on the scene to capture all the action.     • Sit Rep - October 2013
      • A big hello to you all from Stokes Valley Volunteer Fire Brigade. I'm very pleased to announce that September has been a fair month for fire call outs. This is something we are all trying to reduce. We are, of course, still checking households for working smoke alarms. This statistic is still not where we need it to be, so, if you do not have smoke alarms, please get some installed. They should be installed in each bedroom where people are sleeping, living areas and internal access garages, etc. Remember, a sleeping person cannot smell smoke, smoke does not wake you up and it does kill.

    • Call-out stats - September 2013
      • After a reasonably busy last few months, with call-outs totalling 37, 15 and 13 for June, July and August respectfully, the Stokes Valley brigade were called out to just six incidents during the month of September. It's great to see that the fire safety message seems to be getting through.  The only property fire that we attended was a deliberately lit fire in the public toilets in Bowers St, which was extinquished before the brigade arrived on the scene.  As always, if anyone has any information about deliberately lit fires, please do not hesitate to call the police.     • Call-out stats - August 2013
      • During the month of August, Stokes Valley Volunteer Fire Brigade responded to a total of 13 incidents.  We attended six fires, from the very small (a smoking light-fixture) to the extremely large "4th Alarm" factory fire in Petone on the 23rd August.  We also attended four medical emergencies during the month and there were three false alarms. Even with another fairly significant (magnitute 6.6) earthquake on 16th August, the Wellington region seemingly dodged another bullet and the brigade had absolutely no earthquake-related incidents to attend to.  Let's keep our fingers crossed that that remains the case for many, many years to come!     • Sit Rep - August 2013
      • Hello Stokes Valley and welcome to August as we head towards Spring. As you know, I am all about the hot weather and can hardly wait until the heat comes back into our days.  As there has not been a Sitrep in a couple of months, I have lots to catch you up on. Firstly, welcome to all those people and families that have moved into the area.  This is a great community with loads of good people wanting to ensure our community stays safe and remains a fantastic place to bring up your children. Well, as you can imagine, the Fire Brigade has been very busy over the last 3 months due to the storms.  June was our second busiest month ever with mostly storm related callouts.

    • Call-out stats - July 2013
      • Despite the Wellington region being rocked by a strong 6.5 magnitude earthquake on 21st July, Stokes Valley Volunteer Fire Brigade attended less than half the number of call-outs in July than in June. The storm that hit the region back in June kept the brigade much busier than the recent earthquake did, which, in a funny kind of way, is probably a good thing (considering the utter devastation that the people down in Canterbury have had to deal with).  The brigade were called out to just two earthquake-related incidents, including one to Hutt Hospital.     • StokesValleyFire.org.nz v3.0 - Brigade website gets another makeover
      • After our longest hiatus yet, Stokes Valley Volunteer Fire Brigade is back online with this new and improved website.  It's certainly been a long time coming but we hope the wait was worth it! Apart from updating much of our content, we've introduced a new, modernised design and layout.  We've also integrated social networking for the first time; we'll be using Facebook and Twitter (in conjunction with the site itself) to keep our local community up-to-date with the latest happenings and activities that the brigade is involved in and to post news and public notices as they come to hand.

    • House fire - Horoeka Street
      • Late last night, the brigade was alerted to a house fire in Horoeka Street, Stokes Valley.  The house was fully ablaze when the brigade arrived. Well done to neighbour, Andrew Stephen, for dragging an elderly resident through a window to safety!  Stuff.co.nz have posted an article about the fire and Andrew's heroics here.
