    • New Nightclubs Enter Town to Little Fanfare
      • It’s common conjecture at this point that Courtenay Place is either dead or dying. Every few months, Stuff or the Post drags the corpse out to beat it around further. Frequently accused suspects in this murder include freshers, the pandemic, and (perhaps more accurately) price gouging by the small group of businesses that own most of the clubs.

    • Lanterns of the Cross
      • A short, sharp, sweet and sour chilli post: aren’t the new Lanterns at the Southern Cross garden bar great? Love ‘em ! Thanks for the pix Bambi – and thanks to the Southern Cross Bar for being so awesome. Whoever the architect is, deserves a medal I tell ya ! Gung Hai Fat Choy ! [...]

    • Our Brand New Name!
      • No - we haven't changed the name of the theatre! Our first floor bar has had a makeover thanks to Massey University design student Brit O’Hara and mentor Debra DeLorenzo, with help of generous donations from our supporters, and funds raised from last year's Flourish scarf auction. After much thought, discussion and suggestions it has been officially christened: The ½.

    • Social Barfly
      • The Masked Barfly has been busy in the last little while soaking up the scene and hanging around the hors d'oeuvres in our buzzy little town.  As could be expected the Masked Barfly favours fecund environs where one can imbibe a good compost of booze, blood and guts, gossip and culture.    Some bullets of buzz: read more

    • Leaving a paper trail
      • We've raved about Monterey Bar before, but just quickly, we want to point you to their blog on which they display the best of the artworks drawn on their paper-covered tables. You have to wonder about what was going on when this divorce settlement was written, or what exactly is wrong with these tights - but I could tell you the backstory to Senor Handsome if you ask nicely.

    • Review: Lagerfield
      • Last year, for the second time in a row, Team Wellingtonista won the Webstock Pub Quiz (we intend to win it this year too, by the way). Our prize was a $300 tab for Lagerfield at 21 Blair Street. Having been there late at night when it was full of munters, I was not overwhelmed with enthusiasm, but as it turns out, it was a lovely experience.

    • Eating our way through the recession
      • Remember a few months ago, when doom and gloom dominated the hospo news? Well, there certainly have been a lot of closures in central Wellington, but many of those places have re-opened, and we've even got a few brand-new bars and restaurants to celebrate.

    • Yet another mystery bar
      • I've never been afraid of eclecticism. A dash of Kiwiana and a touch of faded grandeur can go down a treat if served with a generous slug of hipster irony (see Mighty Mighty). A grab-bag of Nana kitsch can turn into something resembling conceptual art if it's assembled with wit and flair (see Auckland's Northern Steamship Company). But sometimes it all goes horribly wrong. I know! Let's grab some

    • Local bar: Ageists
      • I'm appalled to discover that local Wellington sports establishment the 'Big Kumara', home of more giant TVs than your local Harvey Norman, is willing to ban a willing drinker because he's "too old".

    • Bar wars
      • The Capital Times has begun its 2006 Best of Wellington survey (not online), inviting readers to vote for their favourite things under dozens of categories. However, one category is glaringly absent: best bar. They have best barman, barmaid, music venue and nightclub, but no bar (or best Martini, for that matter).
