    • Tranz Metro in Wellington have developed an event and partnership with The Salvation Army to support the Army’s caring work in the Wellington region for the Christmas/New Year period by collecting food for our food banks. The idea involves a special 4 coach English Electric service that will operate on Saturday 28th November which will call at every station in the electrified network to collect donations of non perishable food.

    • Today was a good day for the 4 teams representing the club at the 2012 National Road Relays held on a challenging course in Upper Moutere outside Nelson. The senior men's team competing in the B grade placed third as did the masters women. Great efforts and possibly the best result at a national relay for many years. Needless to say the celebratory meal was held in good spirits!!

• • Metlink to slash off-peak fares, make weekends and public holidays free for children

    • Off-peak fares on Metlink public transport services will be reduced and children will ride for free on weekends and public holidays, as part of a package of concessions agreed today by Greater Wellington. Fares are currently discounted by 25 percent to encourage off peak travel, but the regional council today agreed to increase the discount to 50 percent, which will also apply to concession holders. Greater Wellington Transport Committee Chair Roger Blakeley said he was pleased the council had adopted the recommendations of the Future Fares Subcommittee.

Designed by architect John Scott for the Society of Mary in 1959, the Futuna Retreat Chapel in Karori was opened on 19 March 1961. Futuna Chapel may be New Zealand’s most important building of the 20th century, the first to express in architectural terms New Zealand’s contemporary national identity. The building was awarded a Gold Medal by the New Zealand Institute of Architects and, later, was the recipient of the Institute’s inaugural 25 Year Award.

No luck there, I'm afraid, with Gazz limping off after just 1 minute with a nasty looking recurrence of his injury. Fortunately, Striker Barts gallantly came to the rescue and played the remaining 89 minutes up front.

    • Strictly speaking, Wellington's first trolley bus was a single 20 kW one from 1924 which ran along the Hutt Road for a while. However, the main fleet of trolley buses began in 1949 with the arrival of 10 Crossley/Metropolitan Vickers 78 kW examples (another 4 of this model also went to New Plymouth). The first route they were used on was was Oriental Bay where they shared the road with trams for 15 months.

    • Please find the following information and newsletter relating to the NZ Secondary School Track, Field and Road Race Championships, being held in Newtown Stadium in 6-8 December 2019 Newsletter One Guideline Programme The following changes (in red) have been made to the programme: In order to avoid a clash of High and Triple Jumps for the Junior Boys the Junior/PA Boys and Junior/PA Girls High Jumps have been swapped. The boys will now compete on Sunday at 9.00am and the girls on Saturday at 3.30pm. This also improves the spread of jumps for the girls. As a result of interest in having mixed girls and boys 4×400m relays the NZSSAA Executive has decided to trial this as a pilot event for both grades for 2019/20.     • November 2022 will be the final month of paper Rail Monthly passes. The 30-day Rail pass replaces these passes and is available to load onto your Snapper card from 7 November, for use on the Kāpiti Line from 12 November and the rest of the network from 27 November. The pass is activated on its first use and includes your bus trip to or from your local station when travelling to Wellington Station from zones 4-14.

This may be your last chance to see this fabulous facility in its current form as it is likely that we will have to dismantle antenna infrastructure over the coming year (to make way for the wind farm project).

• • Access to JCBR Reading Room - 7th and 8th of February

    • On Tuesday 7 February from 10:00 AM till 2:00 PM and Wednesday 8 February from 12:00 PM till 4:00 PM, the JC Beaglehole Reading Room will be in use for TXTT 201 tutorials requiring use of material from our collections. We can accommodate one reader at a time in the office area, but if you are able to schedule your visit outside these tutorial times, we will be better placed to provide for you.
