    • pre-season local derby this Saturday morning at Wakefield Park 9:30am
      • <figure class=" sqs-block-image-figure intrinsic " > Come down to support the IBU Shark's first team in their second pre-season game of 2020 this time against Wellington United from the Capital Premier League. This game is a particularly special one as it features Leonardo Villa, who most of you will know simply as Leo, playing for the opposition.  Leo is our head junior coach and is often seen around Wakefield nurturing our 5-15 year old junior and youth players.  For the junior players out there, one of the absolute treats of having Leo around is being able to witness him playing the “beautiful game”. You are unlikely to see a player in our local competitions like Leo, having played to the heights of Serie B in the Italian league over several seasons.  To see Leo gliding about the field directing, intervening and playing defence splitting passes is to see the work of a master.  His feline presence on the field is truly the embodiment of Argentina’s famed Puma, prowling the midfield!   Good luck Leo, but not too much - the Sharks are going to be here to play!       • Good news! Downstage and Awkward Productions are proud to announce that ADAGIO’s season at the theatre is extended by popular demand till 1 November. The show, which takes circus out of the tent and into the theatre, features a blend of syncopated circus acts and music from Jonathan Crayford. Directed by Deborah Pope, ADAGIO received excellent feedback from both audiences and reviewers.Downstage also introduced a family pass for the 6.30 pm performances from Monday till Wednesday and the 3 pm matinee on Saturday 25 October.     • Principal’s Message – Mid-Term, 2019
      •  Message from the Principal “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way …” I’m sure many of you will recognise these beautiful words from “A Tale of Two Cities” by Charles Dickens and you will probably know why I am starting my message with this quote. We are in uncertain times, there is hope and there is despair and the despair seems to be outweighing the hope at the moment. Unfortunately, negotiations with the government are not going well and disruption is occurring in our schools. This is not what any of us want but these are the times we are living in. The current government has inherited 9 years of neglect and they obviously cannot rectify this immediately but their intransigence on various aspects of the negotiations is reprehensible. Education is a fundamental right and governments should be nurturing and cultivating the best teaching workforce so that we can have the best education system. The government should be leading the conversations about the best ways to do this but they are not. The key ingredient here, as I’m sure you know, are the teachers who are in front of our young people every day. We, as a society, have to decide whether we value those people or not. We have to decide whether we want the best people caring, supporting and inspiring our young people or not. Thank you for your support during these times and we will need it in the weeks ahead. I am sad to announce that Eric Tan has left us today to return to his home country of Singapore. Eric worked with us for 3 years in the Science department and made quite an impression with his calm, relational manner, his thorough planning and the cleanest Science labs you will ever see! We have already welcomed Dylan Weatherley-Libeau into the Science department this week as Eric’s replacement and we will also be welcoming Shaun Tavernor next week as a new Deputy Principal, and a Science teacher. Staffing changes inevitably cause more disruption and I thank the students for their patience in these times. You should have received information and brief biographies of persons standing for election in the upcoming Board of Trustees elections. Please read these carefully and make sure your voice is a part of this process by voting by 12.00pm on 7 June. It is also important to recognise the service of outgoing members, particularly Deanne Daysh who has served on our board for over 6 years with the last three spent as board chair. Deanne has donated a huge amount of her time to the school and I am forever in debt for her inspirational leadership and support in this forum. We have recently renamed our special needs unit from base 1 to He Kākano. He Kākano means ‘seed’ and conveys growth, development and expansion. Even before a seed is planted or nourished, it has inherent promise – the capability to take root, develop, grow and blossom. He Kākano reminds us of the opportunity we have in schools to make new beginnings, to plant, to nurture, to cherish, to realise potential, to grow and enhance that which is. He Kākano is a symbol of productivity and the promise of success through learning and achievement. Finally, this is the time of year when we market ourselves to our community. We have had feeder school visits and we are about to run our annual Open evening on Monday 10 June. We always look forward to this opportunity to showcase the work that we do at our great school. My speech to the feeder school students was about opportunity and the words above which He Kākano embodies, explain this perfectly: opportunity “to make new beginnings, to plant, to nurture, to cherish, to realise potential, to grow and enhance that which is”.     • Urban Dream Brokerage to close in Wellington with a call to support artists developing work independently in the city
      • <figure class=" sqs-block-image-figure intrinsic " > Brides, Barbarian Productions, Bowen House, 2013 A letter to our city, our artists, our property owners, our supporters.   We have loved changing Wellington City’s dynamic through Letting Space’s Urban Dream Brokerage service - with thanks to some remarkable creative people, property owners and the funding of the Wellington City Council and Wellington Community Trust. Over the past five and half years, Urban Dream Brokerage in Wellington has placed over 300 creators and artists in 45 spaces with 61 projects. Images and details of these can be found here, including three new, current projects. Some have been short, others have lasted much longer – the amazing group Coliberate have just finished 18 months running  a mental health gym in Featherston Street, for example. On 30th June we come to the end of a three-year contract with Wellington City Council for the delivery of the service. Letting Space has made the decision not to renew this contract. Rather we will do new work under the auspices of our trust, the Wellington Independent Arts Trust.  We all continue to look for ways to make Wellington a diverse and people-oriented place. In terms of the brokerage, property owners will tell you they are facing unprecedented issues with earthquake strengthening plus a far higher demand for retail spaces in the city than when we began, during a recession. It has got harder and harder for us to find spare spaces in a popular little city. It remains key work to provide infrastructure for independent artists. This is our challenge to council, to organisations, to all: if you wish Wellington to remain creative you need to prioritise directly supporting the city's most dynamic artists, through funds or resources such as space. It is in their hands, not established organisations or events, that the future lies. This needs new and different energies right now. We also need to celebrate and thank our city. The UDB projects have seen artists and other creatives consistently and uniquely challenge the expectation of the city’s offerings. They have helped us recognise that our city needs to provide diverse living spaces for all, where many people feel included and new ideas can take shape. Where artists and other creatives have the space to grow new enterprises and ways of working, developing their own interaction with the city. This has led to us working in Dunedin - where a programme now thrives, and programmes in Porirua and Masterton, as well as providing inspiration and advice to other cities nationwide and overseas. We’ve helped along the way with the development of proposals with many groups and in this last year have offered a monthly lunchtime gathering and podcast and, currently, a mentoring programme. We’ve loved working with artists and makers, helping them see their ideas to fruition. Many have gone on to develop stronger practices and businesses as part of the city. We continue to believe this kind of work is vital and special to Wellington’s identity. A place where artists feel they can be part of the city’s fabric. It’s something that helped the notion of being a ‘creative capital’. We’re thrilled to see artist run spaces like Te Haukāinga, meanwhile and play_station join others in the CBD in the last two years – artists are stepping up and taking on property.  Others also need to lead and some are looking for space. In May 2017 we conducted focus groups and surveyed of artists with experience in working in unconventional spaces about what they really need to stay active and sustained in Wellington.  A report on this can be found here. We think it’s time to heed the lead of authorities like Dunedin City Council currently and work actively to see how artists can be more embedded in infrastructure. Artists need more than event presentation space and promotion - they need space for development, where they can collaborate and be more part of the city. They suffer from a lack of the working spaces and connections that other creatives are gaining from co-share working spaces. Artists need to be funded to be artists - to develop, think and contribute to Wellington’s public, private and government institutions. It’s about artists working to be more embedded dynamic activators of the city. And it’s about recognising artists’ time and need for development potential, rather than seeing them as temporary pop-ups, or as free agents of lightweight cool projects. It's about seeing them as contributors to our city’s development. We hope Urban Dream Brokerage has helped challenge what exchange means for Wellington’s CBD - non-commercial activity as a vital part of the urban infrastructure. Projects like Moodbank, People’s Cinema, Co-Liberate, Political Cuts, to name a few, have gone on to have lives in other places, following the legacy of Letting Space produced and curated projects in the city like Kim Paton’s Freestore.  Temporary sometimes leads to permanent, but even without physical legacy we think the traces of the network that has been created have a lasting resonance for many creators in Wellington. Urban Dream Brokerage ends in June but we are encouraging others to pick up the challenge to do this work. Never underestimate the generosity there is amongst property and business owners who understand how value in a city needs to work in different ways and are committed to Wellington’s arts ecosystem. Expect knockbacks, but hold to your vision! We are making our resources, forms and processes available through Creative Commons for anyone to pick up. A link to these will be posted on our website, our blog and through our social media threads soon. All three of us are looking forward to continuing to work with our many dear friends and valued colleagues to continue to make Wellington such a special place to live and work. We are delighted to write that the Urban Dream Brokerage is relaunching in Wellington city (see the website), with support from the WCC City Recovery Fund for the first year. We are now open for new applications from both citizens with new ideas for vacant space to increase public participation in the city, and from property owners with vacant space that needs enlivening.  UDB continues to be funded through the Wellington Independent Arts Trust but Letting Space (Mark Amery and Sophie Jerram) are announcing the handover to Maverick Creative led by broker Jason Muir and staff Linda Lee and Tallulah Farrar. We have been in discussion for some time, and Mark, Sophie (and past brokers Helen Kirlew Smith and Tamsin Cooper) are professionally involved in training and overseeing the establishment of the UDB over the first six months. Excitingly, Letting Space are also curating six commissions with WCC funding for UDB in 2021 (details here).    Pencil in the busy Xmas diary a rather special launch celebration for Thursday evening 17 December 5.30pm at Level 2 57 Willis Street (above Unity Books) which will see the launch of a UDB Book 2012-2018, Brokered Dreams, and the introduction of a raft of exciting programmes for early 2021 Theatre as a City with Performance Arcade, Cubadupa, and the dynamic new artist powered work space we are in for that evening Two/Fifty Seven. More details to follow. Many exciting ideas and property relationships are already in development and we are all so thankful for the support and enthusiasm this is already receiving at a vital time for Wellington city, and indeed the planet, to look for new models of being together in urban environments as we see apartment blocks rise, income and property inequality issues, significant wasted vacant space as we potentially face a recession and dramatic new challenges with Covid and environmental factors. Urban Dream Brokerage is a mechanism for all in our community to lead. Our aims remain as follows: Increase diversity and community through living spaces in the city. Reduce vacant space and increase citizen ownership in towns and cities. See stronger representation of mana whenua in the city. Increase professionalism and help innovate business development. Te Aro Eats is a collaborative and interactive dining experience where you are invited to connect with fellow diners, volunteer in the meal mahi, and take time to enjoy the delicious kai that has been created to show what is possible when we mahi together. Brought to life by the volunteers and staff at Seeds to Feeds, Everybody Eats, The Free Store, Wellington Timebank, Kaibosh Food Rescue, and with the support of Kaicycle, BGI (Wellington Boys and Girls Institute), Neighbours Aotearoa, Commonsense Organics and Wellington City Council. Saturday: 12 pm - 2 pm | 4 pm - 6 pm Sunday: 12 pm - 2 pm Each session open to all This meal is designed to showcase how our community-focused organisations operate and welcome volunteers. This will be inclusive (easily catering to vegetarians, vegans, gluten intolerances, and allergies), and created to share the story of our kai and our people. Admission is by koha, either monetary or with time or resources towards the mahi. While dining you will be encouraged to meet the guests dining with you, to connect and share stories. This enables them to perform to their full potential in exams. We have over sixty senior students who receive SAC. The school receives no funding to employ reader writers.  NZQA pays for reader/writers for externals only. At exam times it is very difficult to cater for the high numbers and we are looking for volunteers to help us out. Morning exams begin at 9am and the afternoon session starts at 1.20 pm. They can vary between 1.5 – 3 hours.   You do not need to know the subject but have equivalent to High School Literacy and have legible writing.  You will not be placed with a student you know. This visit presented the opportunity for the Prime Minister to announce an additional $4 million for the project which will ultimately enable students from 500 NZ schools to work with professonal artists and creative practitioners, benefiting from their specialist artistic knowledge and creative practices. Thirteen of our He Kākano students are involved in the programme which is aimed at enhancing student wellbeing and improving their ‘core competencies in communication, collaboration and creative thinking’, as well as inspiring awareness of careers in the arts and creative sectors. As part of the visit He Kākano shared what they had learned prior to lockdown, demonstrating fantastic memory of their routines and great coordination too. The Prime Minister also met students passionate about the creative arts, taking time to talk to them about their interests and talents.               Important information Breakfast club We are pleased to announce that we are opening up a Breakfast Club at the school from the start of Term 3.  This will run in the canteen each day and will be free to any student who wishes to start the a nutritious bowl of Weetbix. After the successful and fun afterwork series—and before you check out for the holidays—we are putting on a training session focussing on compass skills. The training will occur on Kaukau, at 6—7pm Wednesday, 17 December. Our session is aimed at those wanting to learn new skills and techniques, or those with more experience who want to practise their techniques, and is suitable for every ability (kids and adults welcome!). Bring your compass and clothes suitable for the weather, as it can be exposed on the tops. No dogs are allowed on the farmland. The session will be coached by Rachel and Yvette Baker, so please email Rachel at rachel.rosara.baker@gmail.com if you have any questions, or need to borrow a compass. The Endeavour Cup is awarded for development and performance, and the Fortune Cup is awarded for outstanding service to the club. Endeavour Cup Rachel Baker received this year’s Endeavour Cup for her outstanding performances including as part of the New Zealand team at this year’s Junior World Orienteering Championships in Italy. Other nominees were Morag McLellan and Jake McLellan. Fortune Cup Alan Horn received the Fortune Cup. Alan unfailingly provides outstanding support for events, gear, and controlling and planning. Other nominees were Paul Teesdale-Spittle, Helen Hughes, Lachlan McKenzie and Will Vale. Members’ League We will be trialling a members’ league in 2026—a way to introduce some fun competition into events where scores are based on comparative performance, rather than absolute as per race time. Details are being worked through but generally will look like this: For members age 16 or over who run a Red-level course CSWs and OYs will be ‘counting events’ Scores will be allocated based on the formula “Average km rate * (age and gender weighting)” Overall winner: If there are 10 ‘counting events’, we will take your top 6 scores.       • Decision and Recommendation of the Hearing PanelThe Hearing Panel issued their decision on the resource consent application and recommendation on the Notice of Requirement on the 4th of September 2020Decision and Recommendation of the Hearing Panel 4 September 2020 - Pinehaven Streamworks (pdf)Appeal PeriodsPlease note that the appeal periods for the decision on the resource consent application and the recommendation on the Notice of Requirement are different as outlined below.Resource Consent granted by GWRCIf the applicant or any submitters are dissatisfied with the decision to grant the resource consent, they may appeal to the Environment Court under sections 120 and 121 of the Resource Management Act 1991 within 15 working days of the decision date (ie. by 25 September 2020). If no appeals are received by 25 September 2020 on the resource consent decision, GWRC will issue the applicant the consent certificates.Recommendation on the Notice of Requirement to UHCC The Committee have made a recommendation that the Notice of Requirement be approved under section 171 of the Act. This recommendation is to the Upper Hutt City as requiring authority. The Upper Hutt City Council will make a decision within the next 30 working days under section 172 of the Act as to whether to accept or reject the recommendation. When that decision has been made, the Upper Hutt City Council must issue a notice of decision to submitters within 15 working days under section 173 of the Act. Submitters who are dissatisfied with this decision may appeal to the Environment Court under s174 of the Act within 15 working days of receiving that decision. Upper Hutt City Council will therefore inform submitters by email as to when this decision has been made, and the relevant appeal period.Summary of the proposalThe works are proposed over a length of approximately 1,200m in the lower catchment of the Pinehaven Stream. This extends from the Pinehaven Reserve to the inlet where the Pinehaven Stream is piped to the Hulls Creek.The purpose of the works is to reduce flood risk from the Pinehaven Stream to the surrounding area. The works will increase the capacity of the stream and its tributaries to a 1 in 25 year return period, reduce risk of injury or harm from flood flows, integrate overland flow paths into the stormwater network, and enable efficient and effective construction and ongoing maintenance of the structures.The proposal includes changes to the Pinehaven Stream channel and crossing structures in the lower reaches to provide for a 25-year channel capacity. The proposed stream improvement works include the:Creation of natural channel sections with riparian plantingConstruction of vertically sided lined stream sectionsSecuring overland flow pathsRemoving, replacing and constructing new bridgesRemoving three dwellings (4 Sunbrae Drive, 28 and 48 Blue Mountains Road)Upgrading stormwater system inlet pipes and fit with debris screensConstruction of a low wall along the boundary of Willow Park and 10a Blue Mountains Road to divert floodwatersConstruction of a private road access to 30, 32, 34 and 36 Blue Mountains RoadRelocation of utilities which cross the streamThe proposed works are intended to be completed in stages. It is anticipated that construction for stream improvement works will occur over 18 months but may take up to 2 years to complete.Resource consents sought from GWRCThe applicant has applied for the following resource consents from GWRC:Land use consent for excavations within the streambedLand use consent for bank stabilisation works, erosion repair, structures in and over the streambed and earthworksLand use consent for the relocation of utility pipelines over the streambedWater permit for the temporary take, use, damming and diversion of water during worksWater permit for the permanent diversion of water by structures erected as part of the worksReclamation of approximately 50m of streambed as a result of the relocation of the streambedWater permit for the diversion of flood water outside of the streambedDischarge permit for the discharge of sediment-laden water during worksNotice of Requirement sought from UHCCThe proposed designation would cover the area of the proposed construction works described above and would allow for these works to occur. The designation boundary would be adjusted once the structural works are complete. It will be reduced to an extent that is required for the on-going maintenance of the works.The applicant has proposed a number of conditions for the designation to address the effects associated with the proposal. The Requiring Authority for the designation is Upper Hutt City Council.Application documentsThe application and all supporting information, including the Assessment of Environmental Effects (AEE), initial technical reviews, and formal correspondence has been provided.     • Street Scapes - Stacey Frazer Allen
      • <figure class=" sqs-block-image-figure intrinsic " > Stacey Fraser-Allen is a Wellington-based ink and watercolour artist and creator of Brick and Water Creative. After completing her degree in business she found a passion for watercolours and paired that with her love of New Zealand architecture.  Growing up in Wales, amongst estate and terraced houses, she was immediately drawn to New Zealand’s quirky and individualistic buildings and homes. The corrugated iron roofs, timber frames and in-door, out-door flow reflect the kiwi culture she fell in love with.  She began creating personalised art pieces for whanau and friends and decided to refine the process following interest from other clients.Since then she has continues to specialise in capturing buildings, drawing attention to the little details and endeavouring to immortalise the memories that they hold.  Her first solo exhibition was held at Thistle Hall Gallery in February 2022 featuring 28 pieces focusing on and celebrating heritage-listed buildings around Wellington. Some featured works depicted buildings that had been demolished decades ago but were scenes of historical significance and cultural influences in Wellington.   She went on to participate the the New Zealand Art Show in June 2022, where six new original pieces first focused on Wellingtons iconic streets.  Her work continues to celebrate New Zealand’s historical architecture and aims to draw people away from their technology and back into the physical.   .STREET.SCAPES. will debut a collection of existing and new limited edition fine art  of iconic buildings from around central Wellington and it’s southern suburbs.

      • Government Funds Licence Scheme for Youth April 10, 2019 Partners Porirua was proud to host the official launch of the Youth Driver Licence Scheme announced by Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, Social Development Minister Carmel Sepuloni and Associate Transport Minister Julie Anne Genter. The scheme, funded by the NZTA Community Road Safety Fund and the Ministry of Social Development, beginning 1 June 2019, will enable young people on benefits or in care to access free driving lessons and tests.   “A driver licence is more than just a licence to drive. It’s a vital tool and opens doors to education and jobs.,” said Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern. This is exciting news for Partners Porirua as a Youth Service provider, running its own Drive 4 Life programme since 2007.  Partners Porirua also facilitate a Community Driver Mentor Programme enabling disadvantaged youth to practise their driving skills with fully licensed adult driving mentors. “The announcement means Partners Porirua can assist more of our most vulnerable young people to get their driver licence, and increase their employment prospects and independence,” said Executive Director Michelle Robinson. And we are all prostitutes; selling ourselves to fit the ideal image of success and happiness. What is hidden behind the perfect smile of those Hollywood icons we have come to love and hate? They are people at the top of their profession, who have everything, who have achieved greatness… and yet, we love to grab a random tabloid, go to the red carpet pages and put their achievements to the test. Fold the page over those cheesy grins and the eyes start to reveal a whole other story. Compromise ─ I hate that word, as a human being and as an artist. Has our idea of happiness superseded our primal need to love and be loved? The Little Dog Laughed by Douglas Carter Beane presents the façade, the make believe world that we all consume, chew over and spit out in fits and starts. But would we have it any other way? In this dark comedy of manners, we watch in horror as four people make their individual choices to be happy. The truth has consequences; but the lies are a living hell. So, do we shut up in order to win? My thanks to the amazing, brave team of The Little Dog Laughed and Downstage Theatre, and a special mention for my long term collaborator Daniel Williams. Harrison Tew® will run specialised training with senior management, our staff and students in the lead up to a lock down exercise, which will occur on Monday 9 April.  The exercise will be as real-life as possible, which will mean that parents/families will receive notification by way of text, WHS app and/or email.  The information passed will emphasise that this is an exercise/practice and will explain that all updated information will then be posted on the school website. In a genuine incident, should you hear of a lock down at the school, can we please ask that you do not attend the school or phone, as we will not be able to respond.  Your presence at, or contact with the school may make it more difficult for us to manage the situation, and could potentially & place your children and in fact yourselves at risk.  What you need to do now Prior to this exercise, please check that your contact details (mobile phone numbers and email & addresses) are current. This will be the information we use to reach you should an emergency occur at the school. You can do this by checking your details through the parent portal [portal.whs.school.nz] and choosing ‘Details’. Download the WHS App today via Google Play store (Android) or iTunes app store (Apple) Reminders: Earthquake / school closure  This is a good time to encourage you to make or review your family plan around other emergencies, such as earthquakes.  You may find ‘How to get ready’ is a helpful resource. A family plan is particularly important for students who travel to school from out of zone as their transport routes may be cut off.  If a decision is made to close school, for any reason, we will keep our year 9 and 10 students with us until a known adult can come and collect them from the school field.   The only adults permitted to collect a student will be the caregivers and emergency contacts that we have recorded.  We will only release our year 11, 12 and 13 students when it has been declared safe to do so. Porirua City Council update Nathan explained that submissions have closed for the Plimmerton Farm development. The annual plan has been finalised, with a rates increase of 4.9%. PCC are in the early stages of sorting out the long term plan for next year. The district plan will be discussed at the Council meeting tomorrow night; this will be effective from the start of next year. All new builds will be required to have grey water tanks. There was some discussion about the next steps for the Plimmerton Farm development. Greater Wellington Regional Council update Jenny explained that there is low leakage in the water treatment pipes. There will be workshops run by DIA regarding the proposal for large scale water authorities. The Government is subsidising losses incurred as a result of making the trains and buses free during Lockdown. Jenny suggested individuals consider writing to the Minister of Transport to push for Transmission Gully to be finished promptly. GWRC are expecting a report in August on the feasibility of introducing water meters. Financial Main account: $5737.47Fundraising: $0.00 Payment of $621.25 was made to AON NZ for renewal of public liability insurance through to June 2021.Of the monies in the main account, $4263.05 is for the community garden, $588.45 is for Surfers Seat maintenance, and $425.80 is for He Ara Pukerua.Margaret proposed that the RA set up a secure Cloud account for ease of access and an accessible archive, so this knowledge is independent of any individual or office holder, with read-only for general access by the rest of the Committee. They have two major items to finish: the last bollard in the latest batch has been approved by Ngati Toa (Mt Welcome sign); and other signs are to go up shortly, including the ones at Muri Station. The timeline on the outside of the station building will be visible from the approach along the platform. The Muri Station platform building will be formally opened on Saturday 5 September at 10.30am, in conjunction with tours around the food forest, entertainment and refreshments. It will be 135 years since the railway arrived in Pukerua Bay. Action: Jon to create a page on the RA website. Community shed proposal There was some discussion about the naming of the proposal. It was agreed that it continue to be known as the “community shed”, and that it will be available to all members of the community. A MenzShed group may be established, and they will be able to use it at pre-arranged times, as will other community groups. Other business Kate reminded the Committee that the Hub was intending to do some research into loneliness, community connection and resilience. As a result of the village’s activities during the Covid-19 lockdown, Kate has written a proposal which has gone to Porirua Council. Iain and Kate have made further changes to the Village Planning survey. There will be a meeting on 25 July to discuss promotion and circulation of the survey. Margaret notified the Committee that there is a seat near the footbridge which is unnamed. Ernie Amey used to walk past it every day; and Kath Fowler was instrumental in getting the seat established. Margaret has spoken to PCC about putting a plaque on the seat to commemorate both of them. This will cost about $30. Action: Margaret to organise the plaque.     • NUHC Patron Rex Manning has passed away
      • <figure class=" sqs-block-image-figure intrinsic " > Rex Manning in 2018 Longtime player, president and patron of Northern United, Rex Manning, passed away at the age of 91. A service was held for Rex on Saturday, 1 June at 2:00pm, and many club members past and present attended, including the whole NUHC committee. Rex joined Wellington Tech Old Boys hockey club in 1944 when he left college. Two years later, while still a teenager, he was made club delegate to the Wellington Hockey Association. It only took Rex two years to join the Senior team, where he played for 17 years, with 7 as captain. The highlight was the legendary 1950 team, which won the senior championship for the first time (shared with Karori) – and the only time in the first 50 years of the club history. That was back in the days when, in Rex’s words, “We didn’t warm up or stretch or anything, just had a few hits before we ran on. And lemons, not water, at half time.” Tech Old Boys later became Northern United, where Rex served as team captain, selector, coach, club captain, president and patron. Rex never just played the game; he was always helping run the organisations that allowed everyone else to also play the game he loved. <figure class=" sqs-block-image-figure intrinsic " > President’s message from the 50th Jubilee booklet, 1980 When Rex retired from playing, he immediately switched to umpiring, coaching, and drawmaster/ umpires appointee for WHA. His son Bruce recalls a typical Saturday morning in the Manning household in the 1960s: <blockquote data-animation-role="quote" > “Dad would have already done the draw on Tuesday, so it could be put into the paper on Thursday; then at some ungodly hour of Saturday morning, if it was raining, the phone would start ringing. If grounds were closed, he would have to rearrange the draw, ring the radio station to broadcast cancellations and game changes, and ring the umpires to tell them their new games. Then it was up and off to coach the junior team Ross and I played in. Back for lunch and more phone calls – he was always on the phone – then off for his two games as umpire (at 1:15 and 3 pm), and we would all meet up at the clubrooms at Alex Moore park to socialise and hear team results. Repeat the next week...” — Bruce Manning Not surprising, then, that the 50th Jubilee booklet (1980) recorded this little fact: <figure class=" sqs-block-image-figure intrinsic " > This involvement over a long time saw Rex receive the 1992 Club Administrator of the Year award from the Johnsonville Sports Association. From 1986-2010, Rex was involved in the Foundation for the National Hockey Stadium, doing the turf timetabling, chairing the Trust Board, running the Pavilion and fixing the goals. On one occasion he tried to convince a lawn bowls player that they should hire the turf for special bowling events. The man said “you’ll never get bowlers playing on turf, it just won’t happen” – Rex remembered this every time he passes an artificial turf at a lawn bowls club. Along with another Northern Club member, Ken Wood, Rex was instrumental in the fundraising and installation of the Maidstone Park and Elsdon turfs, the bowling clubs have had to put their own turfs in. Rex’s continual presence in the pavilion was handy for many teams, when they had no umpire. Rex filled in as an umpire until he was almost 80! Rex continued to attend committee meetings and was still at the turf at the weekends, watching a new generation of Northern United hockey players. Rex served as patron of the Northern United Hockey Club, of which he was also a Life Member.He was also a Life Member of the Wellington Hockey Association. He was made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to hockey in 2000. In 2012 he received a Hockey New Zealand Gold Award. These accolades however, barely recognise Rex’s over 70 years service to hockey. Rex will be sorely missed by his family, friends and all of the Wellington hockey community.       • When the amazing people behind Wellington on a Plate offer you tickets at the last minute to the very popular and sold out collaboration between La Boca Loca and Parrot Dog  Brewery, you might be surprised at how hard it is to find someone to go along with you, because apparently there is a plague in town, but then you might remember that your poor public servant father is having a shit of a time lately and deserves a special treat, so all is well. Wellington’s ParrotDog Brewery plays host to a delicious evening in partnership with Miramar’s La Boca Loca Restaurant. They are serving up several hot and fresh Mexican dishes, prepared on-site at the brewery amongst the shiny stainless steel tanks. Each dish will be matched with its own flavoursome craft beer. There will even be some Mexican music courtesy of DJ Chefito and local beer with locally made Mexican cuisine: Vamos! This would have been a gorgeous event to be at in summer, with little stalls set up for each food & beer pairing, and keg tables set up to rest your glasses on. The bunting and the lighting was lovely (though not suitable for taking photos with your phone), but with concrete floors and big stainless steel tanks, even with the number of people around, we were all wearing our coats. Me being me, when Will took the microphone and told us there were five things to taste and we could have two each (at least), I wondered if that would be enough to eat, but I had forgotten the filling power of beer! So, on entry we were each given a taster of a specially brewed beer made with a Mexican herb that is as yet unnamed (the beer, that is, the herb has a name which I have very usefully forgotten EDIT: but now they’ve told me on Twitter, I can tell you it’s Epaozte), then each of the five dishes were matched with another beer. Steak & mushrooms served on thick polenta-ish pancakes was served with a Bitter Bitch IPA, wild boar was shredded and matched to a Dead Canary Pale Ale, dessert which was like a deep-fried crunchy whoopie pie came with a Dogg dark Ale, and the Bloodhound red IPA came with a slightly odd but still delicious Kina soup, done in a chili sauce with a special kind of corn. That one definitely left a spicy tingle. My favourite beer and food though was the butterfish ceviche topped with crunchy grasshopper salt (actually made from grasshoppers), served with the Flaxen Feather  blonde ale. The grasshoppers were really tasty. My dad got tipsy and requested Mexican songs from the guitar player/singer, who obliged, the brewers and the chefs floated around answering questions,  and all together it was a super pleasant evening. I’m pleased the ladies got to use the inside toilet while men were relegated to the portaloos outside in the wind. What surprised me though was that there was also a beer & food event at Garage Project tonight as part of Wellington on a Plate (where they were keeping all the beards normally associated with craft beer) which surely would have made it a bit of a Sophie’s Choice for hop heads – except that the Garage Project do was with Monsoon Poon, and you know how we feel about that. But while we’re on that subject, last week, we were at the Localist Jam at the City Gallery, and in between bacon donuts, we were astonished to hear Mike Egan from Monsoon Poon and also head of the hospitality association (EDIT) Restaurant Association say there is no Mexican restaurant scene in Wellington. That would probably come as a bit of a shock to La Boca Loca. And Viva Mexico. And Caliente. And Tequila Joe’s (even if that’s Tex-Mex). And Sweet Mother’s Kitchen.  And Hot Like a Mexican. Perhaps what he meant was he has yet to open an expensively designed venue to serve a  bastardised version of the cuisine at inflated prices to cater to the Churton Park crowd? Hosted by the Building Community Vision Team YOUTH & FAMILIES PASTOR SECONDMENT Next year Hannah North is expanding our ministry to young people by making connections directly with school students. One of our goals for our St John’s ministry with young people is: Build numbers of youth and children attending and being reached by our programmes. To build relational connections with school students and encourage non-churched young people to join in what we do at St John’s, next year Hannah will be at Scots College 10 hours a week working with the Chaplain Rev David Jackson. This secondment is just for 2024, while the Assistant Chaplain Rebecca Wilcox is on 12 months parental leave. Working within a community of over a thousand young people is an expansion of the St John’s youth ministry, and we will find ways for Hannah’s ongoing ministry to be further supported by others. We asked some of them to share a special moment from 2020. We check in with two of them here; have a look at our Facebook page to hear from more of our team. Photo by Hayley Trenwith One highlight or special moment from 2020 For about a year, I chatted with a man in Te Hāpai who was rough sleeping in the bush, had been living that way for years and had no intention of changing that. For one reason or another, he decided that he no longer wanted to come in to the DCM building, but was still OK to talk to me on the street or in the bush where he lived. He was adamant that he didn't want to live any other way and would shut down any conversations about housing. I started to think that maybe he was one of the exceptional few that really, truly don't want to be housed. Then about a month ago, he came into DCM and asked to see me. It was the first time he'd stepped inside our building in almost two years. He came to ask me to help him find housing. That was one of the most significant moments for me this year and in fact, over my whole time at DCM. It showed me that persevering in building relationships with our taumai, even if that relationship building goes at a snail's pace, is a worthwhile investment. It also showed me, again, that we have to get this idea out of our head that people don't want to be housed. What are your hopes and dreams for our taumai and our mahi in 2021? Linked to my moment, I'd love to see DCM continue to be leaders in messaging to Wellingtonians and New Zealanders that the homeless people we see, and don't see, want, need and deserve permanent housing. That they want good things for their lives, they want to be settled, they want to thrive and be part of communities. I would also love to see our Wellington City Council outreach contract renewed. And for taumai, well, my hopes and dreams for them - other than every single one of them being offered permanent housing - I'd love to see people finding meaning and purpose, to realise they are worthy of good things, are accepted and loved. In 2021, we also want to support them to find communities where they feel safe and have opportunities to learn something new, share a skill or be an encourager or supporter for someone else's journey. One highlight or special moment from 2020   A highlight for me this year has been seeing the DCM dental service grow with several new dentists and dental assistants - meaning we can offer more taumai the care they need. It's a very uplifting experience for everyone involved. Taking away people's pain, transforming broken and decayed teeth, or cleaning away sometimes decades of calculus build up - it still warms my heart so much to be part of this service.   What are your hopes and dreams for our taumai and our mahi in 2021?   I have high hopes for DCM capitalising on the amazing mahi that was done this year. While this year's lock-down was very difficult for the country, it was inspiring to see the opportunities it created for taumai. It will be wonderful to see this progress continue. For the DCM dental service, I still dream of even more dental staff and volunteers so we can help as many taumai as regularly as possible. I hope the current government's election promise of increased dental benefits from $300 a year per person to $1000 will be fulfilled; this would be a huge positive for the oral and overall health of our taumai, and the continued improvement of the DCM dental service. Bronwyn Bronwyn (right) is Clinic Lead at Te Aro Health (TAHC). Te Aro Health is committed to providing high quality, low cost health care for vulnerable Wellingtonians. They have 1200 enrolled patients, and operate a satellite clinic at DCM. One highlight or special moment from 2020 I valued our collaboration with DCM, especially through lock-down. What we achieved together was huge - DCM supported us so we could get into taumai accommodation to do those important health checks, and flu vaccines ahead of winter. At a time when other health services were closed, we were out there, identifying people at risk and connecting with them. And we did it collectively. What are your hopes and dreams for 2021?   In 2021 Te Aro Health is hoping to have more staff, especially another nurse practitioner to add to the value of our outreach clinics. We only have two prescribers who can complete medical certificates. We always want to do more, but we need more staff capacity. This is our goal for the year ahead. Henry Henry joined team DCM this year. One highlight or special moment from 2020 Housing an elderly couple into their first permanent home here in Wellington - both of them with varied health, mental, physical and personal challenges, including very strong views about not being housed. However after eventually getting them to view a potential unit, their whole demeanour changed, they were able to envision themselves living there for a very long time and eventually moved in. Another highlight was supporting a taumai with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD), which comes with other social issues, to obtain permanent housing. He is immensely grateful and appreciative of his whare and very determined to not to do anything to lose it. All three of these people will begin 2021 settled in their own home. How special is that? What are your hopes and dreams for our taumai and our mahi in 2021? For our taumai to have a sense of belonging, worthiness, identity, purpose and belief… “The best is yet to come!” And as for our mahi - to continue with our goal of “working together to end homelessness”.
