      • Hurray, another guest post from Heather at Foodie Gems of Wellie Where to go in the city for a quality chocolate fix between usual excuses – chocolate festivals, Valentines, Easter, Xmas, national chocolate day, your birthday, your best friend’s birthday, White Day in Japan, Chocolate Dipped Fruit and Fondue day in the US (hmmm, any others?)? Follow me, and know that the calories will go straight out the bottom of your legs if walking… Start at Bohemein Fresh Chocolates, 109 Featherston Street (unless it’s Sunday and then start at the Esque stand at the City Market in the Chaffers Building).  A two-bite sensory experience of fresh ingredients, no preservatives, and interesting flavours.  To be eaten within 2-3 weeks if you take some away and can hold out that long. Try the award-winning Sea Salt Caramel. Call past Kirkaldie and Stain’s gourmet shop to pick up your favourite Schoc tablet.  The Xmasy Frankincense, Myrrh and Gold is all go again. Pop into The Chocolate Cake Company in Capital on the [Lambton] Quay (a mouthful in more ways than one!) to order a take-home dense and delicious chocolate mud cake for sharing.  To appease the guilt of hogging out all day by yourself.  Unless its Sunday, and then order online once home and you’ve licked away any telltale chocolate moustache. The next stop should be Tempt Cupcakes in the Old Bank Arcade (front corner of Smiths The Grocer) to see if you can resist a Chocolate Caramel or Traditional Moist Chocolate Cake creation.  Just beautiful to behold. As you stroll up Willis Street, stop by Butlers Chocolates near the Manners corner.  Whilst not a local producer, they offer some nicely packaged goodies for Xmas stockings, and have a delightfully sunny afternoon upstairs balcony for a wee chocolatey rest if required. For the regularly-voted best hot chocolate in the city, proceed to Scopa on the corner of Cuba and Ghuznee Streets.  One of those experiences that just simply should be on your bucket list.  Although the shot size is very cute, go for the regular at least.  If you’re gonna do it, do it thoroughly. I’d suggest a sit down in a dark quiet room by about now, so loop around to lower Taranaki Street and Hashigo Zake (downstairs below Zibibbo), and order up a Rogue Chocolate Stout.  And if you’re hungry, one of Hashigo Zake’s famed gourmet pies to go with it. And for a dessert finale, uplift your stomach and meander along to Matterhorn opposite the bucket fountain in Cuba Street, and order up the Eight Textures of Chocolate ‘Thai Style’.  A clever and delicious finish. From here there are a range of buses and taxis nearby, who will take your chocolate-satisfied self wherever you need to go….

      • New whanau community space in Cannons Creek Mar 14, 2019 The day was infused with celebration and a sense of ‘Pride’ and ‘Ours’ at the opening of the new community space and park area at Bedford Reserve in Cannons Creek this week. Ngati Toa kaumatua, Taku Parai blessed the Park which was officially opened by Porirua Mayor, Mike Tana. But it was the young people that were the centre of attention with heartfelt performances from local schools, Windley and Glenview and a rousing haka from Brandon Intermediate. Working with Rachel Scott from Partners Porirua, students from these schools. Porirua College and Cannons Creek School made up a consultation group that were involved in the design and development of the community park space from inception. It has been a true community student-led project, said Rachel Scott, with Porirua College students designing and making the park benches, Glenview students designing and painting the mural, and leaders from Cannons Creek School, Windley School and Porirua College working through a robust consultation process to gather their ideas and work with landscape architects to bring their vision to life. As well as a flying fox, swing play area, performance stage, park benches, DJ post, drinking fountain and family sized picnic table, the space includes a wheelchair-friendly barbecue area and a swing for people with limited mobility. Adding distinct local flavour, the theme of the park was based on the book – Watercress Tuna and the Children of Champion Street – written by well-known author, Patricia Grace. “We have a process where young people have a say and that is so important” said Mayor, Mike Tana “I want to especially thank the schools that have participated in improving this space, either through design or working on the bench seats. It has created a sense of ownership for you in your community.” “The space will definitely be popular. Cannons Creek has always had a sense of community and it’s great to see an area that many families can utilise,” says Eastern Ward councillor and Cannons Creek resident, Kylie Wihapi.     • Northern Men Take Premier 2 Championship For Second Year
      • <figure class=" sqs-block-image-figure intrinsic " > Photo by Lewis Bishop The Northern Men’s team have completed a double, winning their Premier 2 grade for the second year running. In a repeat of last years’ final, they met a strong Tawa Titans team, who were looking to complete their commanding season and push for promotion to the top tier competition. Northern’s ‘Honey Badgers’ had met Tawa five times already this season. During regular-season games, they had come out worse off, but in both the two previous finals matches - in the grading round final and the first semifinal, Northern had held the Titans to a draw, before besting them in penalty shoot-outs. It was after that penalty shoot-out win in the semi-finals that Northern went straight through to the grand final, while Tawa had to fight Hutt United in a second semi. The Northern boys, however, had a free weekend after their friendly match was cancelled. Northern went into the match looking like the underdogs, but went 1-nil up early after a mis-timed strike from player-coach Nathan Croad found the back of the net. The Titans had to wait until the second half to reply, taking the score to 1-1, and looking like the teams would be going to shoot-out for a third time. However, a goal from youngster and Capital rep, Samuel Bishop, put the ball away to bring the Badgers back into the lead. While Tawa’s attack was fierce, and keeper Sam French was called upon to make several saves throughout the game, as the clock counted down, the match felt firmly within Northern control. The Northern team continued to push for the entire 70 minutes, with midfielder Olly Wright chasing down a ball hit out of the Northern defensive 25, to take it into the Tawa circle. While Northern wasn’t able to capitalise off Wright’s attack, 2-1 was how the match ended, with the Northern United boys claiming the championship for the second year running.

      • Howdy, y’all! Trusting everybody is well and good as we (finally!) head into the cooler months – I mean, you really can’t complain TOO much when it’s blimmin’ JUNE and the weather hasn’t been too savage, right?! Anyhow – plenty to be getting on with here at t’Boat – we were surprised and chuffed to get a shoutout from Mark Kozelek of Sun Kil Moon at his recent show, for an Andre Segovia CD set he bought off us last time he visited Wellington in 2008, and we are also looking forward to forthcoming shows from Nadia Reid, Aldous Harding, Warpaint (!!!) and Lloyd Cole… You may also wish to spend some quality time with exceptional new releases from the aforementioned Aldous Harding -her glorious third album, “Designer” is a cracker, along with Mavis Staples‘ excellent Ben Harper-written/ produced set “We Get By”, Sharon Van Etten‘s lovely “Remind Me Tomorrow”, the return of Vampire Weekend with the hefty “Father Of The Bride”, or Big Thief‘s mysterious and lovely “UFOF”… we are also packing a fresh batch of stylin’ Slow Boat tees in some new colours and a range of sizes – a charcoal coloured one, and a reddish-marle are my picks of the litter… We also have tonnes of new posters to brighten up the walls of your pad, DVDs and box sets to hunker down with, a heap of nice priced new vinyl from the good folks at Universal Music NZ, and if you were wanting a special order from the US, say – an order going early next week… do feel free to drop us a line and enquire about anything you fancy. We had a lot of applications from across Aotearoa for our first residency experience. It was a real privilege to read through so many incredible applications and gain new insights into what writers are working on and why residencies are so important.We are delighted to announce that our inaugural resident is Auckland writer Himali McInnes. Himali’s application was exceptional and we look forward to welcoming Himali to Wellington later in 2020. About Himali: Himali McInnes is a family doctor who works in a busy Auckland practice and in the prison system. She enjoys writing short stories, essays, articles, flash fiction and mediocre poetry. She has been published locally and internationally, and has either won or been short-listed in several writing competitions. She is an NZSA Mentorship recipient for 2020. Himali is also a maker of messes - through gardening, beekeeping, cooking and chicken farming. She is humbled and so grateful to be a Verb Wellington Residency recipient, as she loves Wellington (best op shops ever) and is very much looking forward to time spent writing at the Katherine Mansfield House & Garden.     • Volunteers needed for our Annual Street Day Appeal
      • Can you support Wellington SPCA? Our Annual Appeal Street Collection is just over three weeks away and we need your help! Because we don’t recieve any direct government funding, the donations we receive from our supporters are really vital to us and allow us to continue with our work. Last year we raised a record $52,000 and it would be simply fantastic if we could beat that record this year. We will be collecting on Friday 12th November in Wellington, Porirua and Kapiti and on Saturday 13th November in Lower Hutt. We’ve heaps of places available for volunteers on the day – you can collect for an hour or two or be a coordinator looking after a team of collectors at a particular site.       • Operation Details Date/Time:  Thu, 13/07/2017 - 12:15 - 15:00 Operation Type:  CG Operation (good samaritan) People Assisted:  3 Total Volunteer Hours:  16 Day 2 of a major southerly storm in Wellington took it's toll on vessels moored in the channel. We initially received a callout from Police to assist a 15m catamaran who's mooring lines had broken in the main channel. Police ended up putting their own small boat in the water and assisted him. Coastguard Mana then continued on and assessed other moored vessels, finding 2 with broken bow lines. One large launch had a secondary line that was holding the vessel on the mooring, but it was very small so we added a new line to it to hold in the 50kt+ wind gusts.       • Hot on the heels of the Barrio development comes another development of inner-city apartments (first blogged on WellUrban). This one is designed by Archaus - the most prolific architects in Wellington. The site has had a couple of schemes proposed for it previously: one by Abri Architects of Auckland which was shot down in flames pretty quickly, and the other, curvy one that never really saw the light of day except for a feature in the Wellurban blog. This one may be around a little longer. The site, is a highly sought after corner close to Cuba St, right on the edge of Ghuznee St and Leeds St. Looking at architects drawings it seems to be about 14 stories tall.

      • The DomPost reported recently that Wellington Construction Ltd has bit the dust, owing various creditors money as it dissolved into a pile of construction rubble. We’re saddened by that, but its not completely unexpected: you run with wolves, you might just get bitten: although in this case its not really clear who is doing the biting. The saviour of Wellington football club Phoenix, our favourite spiky-haired developer Terry Serepisos has been hit by collateral damage - WCL were building Terry’s Century City development, leaving it in a state of limbo. Perhaps it may even have a a roll-on effect on the next Serepisos project in Dixon St. So, is this the start of the end of Wellington’s construction boom, or is it completely unrelated?

      • Autumn is upon us, and seasons changing means only one thing in the Wellington Craft World. It's Knack time. Knack time being this saturday from 9.30am till 2.30pm at Berhampore School.   Knack is a glorious seasonal market which also doubles as a school fundraiser. So you get to buy handmade from the artist which is grand and then know that you are also helping out a school. It's like double doing good, with shopping . Knack's full of lovely handmade things, and is often where some of Wellington's newests crafters make their selling debut, so it's a great market for those of you wanting to be ahead of the. There's loads of parking at the school or catch the bus and amble up the hill.

      • Wellington United Diamonds had their third five goal win in a row on Saturday as the downed Petone 5-0 in a W-League game at Newtown Park. The win means they stay in first place on goal difference, but Palmerston North Marist have managed to close the gap to just one goal with a 6-0 win over Seatoun. It took Diamonds just nine minutes to open the scoring through Charlotte Wilford Carroll. It wasn't long before Jemma Robertson thought she had got on the scoresheet tapping in a cross from Dani Ohlsson, but it was somewhat inexplicably called offside and she had to wait to the second half, getting two goals in four minutes to take her tally for the season to 22.
