Coastguard Mana / June 2021

Coastguard Mana is an affiliated member of Coastguard New Zealand and is a Unit of Coastguard Central Region. We are based at the Mana Cruising Club / Mana Marina on the west coast of the North Island, just up the road from Wellington. Our area of responsibility covers the Mana inshore recreational area and the northern end of Cook Strait across to the top of the Marlborough Sounds.

      • Operation Details Date/Time:  Tue, 22/06/2021 - 18:30 - 21:30 Operation Type:  CG Operation (good samaritan) People Assisted:  1 Total Volunteer Hours:  15 Checked out Mahara on Pole Mooring 13 for Harbour Ranger.  Found in good condition.  Continued with training, helm and local area familiarisation.  Moored at wharf at Whitireia.  Checked mooring at Onepoto.  Demonstrated night reflection on channel markers.       • Operation Details Date/Time:  Sun, 20/06/2021 - 10:00 - 13:30 Operation Type:  CG Operation (good samaritan) People Assisted:  100 Total Volunteer Hours:  17 Launched at Mana Marina went to Plimmerton Beach.  Stood off 50 to 100 metres off shore.  1 to 1.5 Meter surf.  Waited until last swimmer left water 35 m minutes after start.  Two team members on shore with 4WD.  Good coms.  Rained throughout swim.     • Broken down runabout adrift offshore
      • Operation Details Date/Time:  Tue, 08/06/2021 - 18:30 - 22:30 Operation Type:  SAROP Cat 1 People Assisted:  3 Total Volunteer Hours:  40 Multiple reports of a vessel with 3 or 4 POB broken down (via victim to Police on 111) or overdue (family to CG Ops Centre and friends to CG Mana public phone). Location (estimate) varied between 6NM of coastline between Makara and Little Titahi Bay. Limited comms from victim via 1 cellphone that was down to 20% battery. Information very confused and unreliable. Started with coastline search and trying to identify potential lights. Received TXT indicating we had gone past them and they had drifted further out near Mana Island. Spotted a orange flickering light about 3NM in the distance.
