Coastguard Mana / January 2012

Coastguard Mana is an affiliated member of Coastguard New Zealand and is a Unit of Coastguard Central Region. We are based at the Mana Cruising Club / Mana Marina on the west coast of the North Island, just up the road from Wellington. Our area of responsibility covers the Mana inshore recreational area and the northern end of Cook Strait across to the top of the Marlborough Sounds.

    • Floatplane in high winds
      • Operation Details Date/Time:  Sun, 22/01/2012 - 16:30 - 17:10 Operation Type:  CG Operation (good samaritan) People Assisted:  2 Total Volunteer Hours:  1 A float plane was having difficulty taxiing to the jetty in high winds inside Porirua Harbour. The pilot contacted the Fire Service to request standby assistance and they contacted Coastguard Mana for on-water assistance in case there were any difficulties with getting to the jetty safely. Incident Management Team members from Coastguard Mana and the local fire crew attended from the shore. The plane safely taxied to the intended jetty and no further assistance was required.     • 5m runabout with flat battery then no fuel
      • Operation Details Date/Time:  Mon, 23/01/2012 - 18:15 - 21:30 Operation Type:  CG Operation (good samaritan) People Assisted:  2 Total Volunteer Hours:  29 A 5m runabout with battery fault was reported to Coastguard Mana as anchored just north of Mana Island. Located vessel with 2 people on board with PFD's and hand held radio (no flares, no torch, no GPS) drifting almost 4NM north of their reported location. Initially flat battery - jump started & headed to Paremata boat ramp - motor died opposite Hongeka Bay - run out of fuel - boat taken under tow @ 2025.     • Missing swimmer at Titahi Bay- Day 2
      • Operation Details Date/Time:  Sun, 15/01/2012 - 08:00 - 13:30 Operation Type:  SAROP Cat 1 People Assisted:  1 Total Volunteer Hours:  82 The search for the missing swimmer at Titahi Bay resumed at 0800 on Sunday morning. A large search was performed by Coastguard Mana's vessels Trust Porirua Rescue and CRV Pelorus. Shoreline searches were performed around the whole of Mana Island and all the way down the West coast as far as Makara Beach, while Titahi Bay Surf Lifesaving Club covered the shoreline and immediate area around Titahi Bay. Sea conditions were very rough with 1-2m waves and up to 30 knots of NW wind (slightly less than the previous day).     • Missing swimmer at Titahi Bay
      • Operation Details Date/Time:  Sat, 14/01/2012 - 16:00 - 20:30 Operation Type:  SAROP Cat 1 People Assisted:  1 Total Volunteer Hours:  40 Coastguard Mana was tasked to search for a missing swimmer at Titahi Bay after a group of swimmers were caught in a rip. Emergency services responded to reports of a group of four swimmers in trouble at about 4pm. Most of the group were rescued but one was still unaccounted for. CRV Trust Porirua Rescue has been searching in conjunction with Westpac Rescue and Titahi Bay Surf Lifesaving Club since 1700, while CRV Pelorus had to turn back due to severe sea conditions. TPR returned to base at 2030 and will resume the search early on Sunday morning.
