Coastguard Mana / February 2013
Coastguard Mana is an affiliated member of Coastguard New Zealand and is a Unit of Coastguard Central Region. We are based at the Mana Cruising Club / Mana Marina on the west coast of the North Island, just up the road from Wellington. Our area of responsibility covers the Mana inshore recreational area and the northern end of Cook Strait across to the top of the Marlborough Sounds.

30ft launch with battery problems

- Operation Details Date/Time: Sat, 16/02/2013 - 11:30 - 13:30 Operation Type: CG Operation (good samaritan) People Assisted: 2 Total Volunteer Hours: 22 A launch with 7 people on board that was participating in the Mana Cruising Club fishing competition alerted CRV Pelorus, who were out training at the time, that they were having issues getting the engine started. Pelorus delivered a battery jump pack to them to attempt to start the engine but it was not powerful enough. Rainbow Warrior spotted during training

- The Greenpeace vessel Rainbow Warrior (the new one) was anchored up near the South End of Mana Island last night while our crews were out training on both vessels.

Broken down yacht assisted into marina

- Operation Details Date/Time: Tue, 12/02/2013 - 20:50 - 23:50 Operation Type: CG Operation (good samaritan) People Assisted: 3 Total Volunteer Hours: 33 A 35ft yacht with 3 people on board ran into difficulty when their engine broke down at Cape Jackson, at the head of Queen Charlotte Sound. They then had to make the decision whether to attempt to sail into Marlborough Sounds, sail across Cook Strait and moor up in the lee of Mana Island or attempt to get back into Mana Marina where their berth is. They decided to request assistance from Coastguard Mana to get back into Mana Marina as there was strong wind forecast for later that evening, followed by a southerly the following day. Yacht full of water on mooring

- Operation Details Date/Time: Tue, 05/02/2013 - 13:00 - 15:00 Operation Type: CG Operation (good samaritan) People Assisted: 1 Total Volunteer Hours: 8 A derilect yacht was well down in the water at the pole moorings on the way to Onepoto. It had been filling with rain water over a long period and the severe rain overnight (which caused significant flooding in Porirua) had topped it up even more. The Harbour Master said the owner required assistance to pump out the vessel. Coastguard Mana pumped out 5000 litres of water and the vessel was left floating evenly in the water. Slipped anchor causes collision in Porirua Harbour

- Operation Details Date/Time: Tue, 05/02/2013 - 09:00 - 10:00 Operation Type: CG Operation (good samaritan) People Assisted: 2 Total Volunteer Hours: 5 The Harbour Master requested the assistance of Coastguard Mana to help resolve a situation caused by severe southerly winds overnight. A catamaran in Porirua Harbour had slipped its anchor and drifted into a trimaran moored nearby. Both yatchs were caught together and the strong southerlies had caused the trimaran to puncture the cat above the water line. The owners were on board and declined assistance. They preferred to wait until the wind had eased. No further damage was expected by either vessel. Pump out water on vessel at pole moorings

- Operation Details Date/Time: Tue, 05/02/2013 - 13:00 - 15:00 Operation Type: Other People Assisted: 1 Total Volunteer Hours: 8 Vessel Pelous Lass was well down in the water at the pole moorings on the way to Onepoto. The Harbour Master said the owner required assistance to pump out vessel. 5000 litres of water was pumped and vessel was left floating evenly in the water. Quiet summer for Coastguard Mana
