Mushroom, mushroom
- The Wellingtonista
- Last week Zealandia published a glorious little photo-essay An Enchantment of Fungi, alerting us to the fact that after a long dry summer, the recent rains have brought forth a rich crop of fungal fruiting bodies.

Zealandia is freelandia
- The Wellingtonista
- This weekend – 16 and 17 October, admission to Zealandia is free! Admission to Wellington’s world-first wildlife sanctuary, ZEALANDIA, is free for all locals this Saturday and Sunday! We are now 15 years into an incredible journey to restore a corner of NZ as closely as possible to the way it was before humans arrived.

Super Fry
- The Wellingtonista
- Stephen Fry, actor, author, wit and geek, is on his way to dear sweet Wellington and we are rather excited! He's coming to Aotearoa New Zealand to film some bits for a BBC series he's presenting, Another Chance To See, where he's travelling the world, checking up on endangered species. While he's in Wellington, he'll be visiting the Karori Wildlife Sanctuary to see how the kakapo is doing (rather

Hot theatre
- The Wellingtonista
- BATS Theatre's new play Heat starts this Friday, and has been selling itself on an unusual point: "eco-theatre". The show's lights and sound will be completely off-grid, and the preparations for the sustainable energy sources were visible over the weekend. Such a ploy could come across as gimmicky, but it's designed to mimic the constraints of its setting, an Antarctic survival capsule.

The Greens: recyclers extraordinaire
- The Wellingtonista
- This particular Wellingtonista was just down at a protest taking place at the Greater Wellington Regional Council offices. Of course, the GWRC transport plans (PDF) are well worth protesting about: more roads, no light rail? Despite the hundreds (and the great majority) of submissions asking for the opposite?

It ain't easy being Green (Cabs)
- The Wellingtonista
- Our favourite cab company has expanded to Auckland and Christchurch and are doing pretty well in both. But it's not all expansion and increasing profits. Recently the eco-friendly cab company has had to defend itself against statements from the head of the Taxi Federation. Then they had to fend off claims from other taxi companies (Combined in this case) that they were also "green".

Turn OFF your lights - 8-9pm tomorrow (Saturday)
- The Wellingtonista
- Support the Earth Hour initiative tomorrow (Sat 28th) and turn off your lights between 8pm-9pm. But it will be dark! I know ... fun eh!? Light candles, play spooky games (I recommend Werewolf) or tell ghost stories - in essence HAVE FUN! And it's not just about the lights, that's the minimum. If you can turn off anything else then do so - how about turning off the computer!!!

Who's going to drive you home tonight?
- The Wellingtonista
- How about you try out a Green Cab? Their all-Prius fleet and commitment to planting trees to offset their carbon, along with their "'ethics first business second" mantra sits happily with the dirty lefty hippies of the Wellingtonista.

Carfree transports - simply no better protection (for the environment)
- The Wellingtonista
- What are you doing tomorrow? I hope it involves walking, or taking the bus, or staying at home in bed all day. Why? Because it's World Car Free Day.
