line-height:150% !important; } } Marking milestones This year at DCM we are celebrating our 50th birthday – but that is not the only milestone we have marked this month Our inspirational director, Stephanie McIntyre, took up the role 15 years ago, in February 2004. 50 years ago, DCM was set up to support the most marginalised people in the city of Wellington (DCM's constitution). Under Stephanie's leadership, we have adopted the byline "together we can end homelessness" reflecting our current focus on one key marginalised group. How appropriate that we should mark Stephanie's anniversary with a morning tea at Te Hāpai (to lift up), the safe, welcoming space here at DCM for people who are experiencing homelessness. There we shared photos and memories from the last 15 years, and our taumai acknowledged the part Stephanie and DCM have played in lifting them up and supporting them on a journey to housing and greater wellbeing. We were very proud to acknowledge Stephanie as one of our featured supporters this month. At the morning tea celebrating her 15 years at DCM, Stephanie noted that Te Amo was the only person who had worked at DCM longer than her. Te Amo works in our Foodbank, breaking down items, re-stocking the freezers with bread, and generally keeping the DCM whare clean and tidy. <!-- --> Our Foodbank needs your support Another of the supporters we lifted up this month was Kaibosh, who supply a wide range of healthy, nutritious food for our taumai. Food rescue service Kaibosh provides quality surplus food three times a week to DCM, and as you can see it includes fresh veges, which is a welcome boost for the nutritional needs of taumai. In addition to food provided by Kaibosh, DCM's Foodbank relies on donated goods from the people of Wellington. The Foodbank has been busy lately, and we are very short of the following items: Tinned stews and ready meals Pasta and curry sauces Jam, honey, peanut butter Tinned fruit Soap, toilet paper, washing powder We would very much welcome your donations of food here at DCM, 2 Lukes Lane, week days or to our food donation bin at New World Chaffers any time. <!-- --> Our health volunteers The other key supporters we featured this month as “kaitautoko of the week” were our dentists. Oral health care is one of the most significant unmet needs of the people who DCM works with, the most marginalised people in our city. This group of amazing dentists from the Wellington branch of the NZDA volunteer their time so that our taumai can receive much needed emergency dental treatment and pain relief. At every session of the DCM Dental Service, we are reminded of just how significant this initiative is in enhancing the wellbeing of people in Wellington who are experiencing homelessness. Here are some examples of people who our dentists have supported recently. 'J' has been rough sleeping for some time. He came into DCM because he had tried to pull his own tooth out and left remnants behind, causing him further pain. He was seen by one of our dentists that day; he came back the next day pain free and ready to talk about his housing options.  'T' is a Māori man who has cycled in and out of homelessness over recent years. He is currently staying at the Night Shelter and has been taking pain relief for some badly infected teeth. He came in to DCM and was seen at the dental service. T needed a number of extractions, and the dentists recommended a second appointment at the DCM Dental Service. T has now been referred to Wellington Hospital; DCM staff will support him to connect with the hospital dental service to be fitted with dentures. The dental service has been important in continuing to build a strong relationship between DCM and T, to support our ongoing work to address his homelessness.    'H' is a daily visitor to Te Hapai. He is also profoundly deaf, and someone DCM staff have often struggled to communicate with. Last week he pointed to his teeth and we were able to make a dental appointment for him, writing the time down on an appointment card. We were unsure if he would remember, but he came to the appointment and was able to receive some much-needed treatment. He has been much more communicative and eager to engage with DCM since. The fourth supporter we featured this month was eye doctor Paul Herrick. He runs a monthly session here at DCM – each time he sees 10-15 taumai, some of whom leave that very day with a new pair of glasses and a whole new view of the world.       • Operation Details Date/Time:  Thu, 25/04/2013 - 10:00 - 13:00 Operation Type:  SAROP Cat 1 People Assisted:  3 Total Volunteer Hours:  30 CRV Trust Porirua Rescue and Pelorus responded to a Police callout for a dismasted yacht 2 miles south of Mana Island.The yacht had gear failure and the mast, boom and mainsail were hanging over the port side.Porirua Rescue passed bolt cutters to the yacht so they could cut away the rigging. On cutting away the rigging an attempt was made to marker buoy the gear with a buoy from Pelorus, this was unsucessful. Once the gear was freed from the yacht she made her own way under power to Mana Marina attended by Porirua Rescue and Pelorus.     • 6hr tow of yacht from Wellington south coast
      • Operation Details Date/Time:  Thu, 05/01/2023 - 09:30 - 21:30 Operation Type:  CG Operation (good samaritan) People Assisted:  2 Total Volunteer Hours:  84 38ft steel yacht got it's anchor stuck near Makara/Ohau. Whilst manoeuvring to release it they overheated the engine. They were unable to sail due to low wind and inexperience, so ended up drifting south in the strong currents. By the time we got to them they had drifted 10NM into Cook Strait, south of Karori Rock through the Karori Rip. It took us 5hrs to tow them back to Mana, by which point the tide was at it's lowest point. We had to put them on the mooring just outside the bar and then return the passenger back to base, leaving the skipper aboard.       • f you're stuck for something to do next Monday night, you could do worse than to head to Porirua Park for the final of Wellington's premier one grade schoolboy rugby competition. The match is to be played between Mana College and Wellington College. As detailed in a story in the Dom Post, Mana has made a dramatic rise through the grades after starting the year in premier two and being promoted mid-season, and to have made it to the final is nigh-on miraculous.

The big push around Wellington at the moment is of course the Housing Upgrade Project. A number of well-respected practices around town have got a project or two in there - with a total of about 20 WCC housing projects to upgrade, we’re guessing there is some work in there to last for a few years

      • In a peaceful cul de sac in Newtown, a stone’s throw from the town belt, sits a nondescript brick house that would attract little interest from passers by, except when music occasionally drifts out through the open windows: a scatter of drums, a glittering harp, voices that glide and soar. This is the home of musician Mara TK, his whānau, and his new record label – Meetinghouse Records.     • Review: Medea
      • The Victoria University Ancient Theatre Society’s adaptation of Medea is an unique combination of both the Euripides and the Seneca play – and I must say, I like where it goes. It’s a fresh take on two classical scripts, and they meld together well, adapted by VATS’ Rebecca Drummond and Rebecca Scholtz. The show itself is powerful, focused significantly on Medea’s rise to power as she ruins her unfaithful husband. It’s a tale of murder and witchcraft and bloodshed, and the zingy script works in its favour.

    • Silverstream Spur Upper Hutt, saving a public amenity for future generations
      • Update September 2021.On the 22nd of September 2021 Upper Hutt City Council voted to scrap the controversial Memorandom Of Understanding that was signed back in 2016 between UHCC and a developer seeking to build 100 houses on he Slverstream Spur. Silver Stream Railway is obviously delighted with this step as we understand talk of constructing any houses on the Spur is now scuppered, a major step change from only a few months ago when we saw concept drawings of the 100 houses overlooking our site.

    • Small notice, big building
      • Did any of you see a small sign in a spot that’s only visible if you’re catching the courtesy bus to Zealandia? It’s a notice about a resource consent application for a new building that will tower over the Michael Fowler Centre, the Town Hall, and neighbouring buildings. Nearly 40 metres high, when the allowable height is is 27 metres, promoted as the home of Victoria University’s National Music Centre but predominantly an office building with what seems to be a significant loss of green open space.

      • The Lower Hutt Amateur Athletic Club (LHAAC) caters for children aged 7-15 years. The 2006-07 season runs from 25th October to 15th March. Club nights offer a mixture of competition and coaching to enable children to gain the necessary skills to participate in a variety of running, jumping and throwing events. The club meets at the Hutt Recreation Ground on Wednesday nights from 6.00pm-7.30pm.
