line-height:150% !important; } } More than 100 taumai showed they counted when they voted at DCM during October’s election I count, I matter, I vote! It has been a very special month at DCM. Many of you have been following the journey our taumai have embarked on, enroling to vote, discussing the issues and practicing voting. The polling booth at DCM during election week capped months of activity designed to inform and motivate taumai to have their say. More than 100 taumai showed they counted when they voted at DCM, and many others voted in their own communities. And yes, for many of them, it was the very first time they had voted. We know you want to hear much more about how this has gone, more than we can share in this brief update. And so we invited DCM kaitautoko (supporter), Lee-Anne Duncan to spend some time with us during election week and to help us tell the story. Lee-Anne spoke with several taumai, and you will enjoy reading their reflections. Click here to read this story! And here we also introduce you to some more taumai who voted at DCM. Pete was the very first person to vote in the General Election at DCM’s polling booth. Pete has been supported by DCM for many years; he is now housed and our wonderful Sustaining Tenancies team work very closely with him. Pete had never voted before. Rochelle has begun doing some paid work at DCM this year, and this has made her think about the example she is setting to other taumai. “This was the first time I have voted, even though I’ve always encouraged my children to vote. I’ve been thinking about our taumai, and seen how easy voting has been for them. I wanted to take part, as they have been, to help set an example as a peer support worker. My kids said ‘Good on you mum’! It felt really, really good to vote, and have my voice heard.” Tony grew up in Iraq, and has faced many challenges in his life. English is also not his first language. Aileen from DCM’s Aro Mai Housing First team is Tony’s keyworker, supporting him to settle in to a home and to work through other issues so that he can thrive in all aspects of his life. Aileen was able to go in with Tony to support him to vote. Tony was very proud, keen to have his photo taken and happy for us to share his photo with you. Many of you know and love Te Amo and so you will understand how thrilled we were that he was able to vote here at DCM. Te Amo has voted before, but has sometimes found the experience difficult and frustrating. At DCM's polling booth, he was in a place he knows well and had the support of people he knows well, to ensure that his voice was heard. <!-- --> Celebrating with Seasonal Kai Voting week at DCM ended with a special celebration, and an acknowledgement of the courage of taumai who had voted for the first time ever, or for the first time in a long time. This day was chosen for kōanga seasonal kai, when the community comes together to share food and mark the change of season. This time the kai was provided by the Press Hall food court vendors. It was a very fitting way to lift up all of those who had voted, and all those who had supported them to do so. <!-- --> Foodbank appeal – can you help? DCM Christmas Foodbank Appeal Saturday 21 November 2020 Here at DCM, we are very reliant on the two large annual Foodbank Appeals to keep our shelves stocked. However this year, the winter appeal was unable to proceed, as it coincided with the COVID lock-down. This year’s Christmas Foodbank Appeal will therefore be even more important than ever. We need a large team of volunteers to play a variety of roles on Saturday 21 November – can you help in this way? If there is more to do, we have another Working Bee scheduled for Sunday 9th October. The Maranui Lifeguard Sport Team have a Quiz Night Fundraiser at the Parrot Dog on Tuesday 4 October, 7pm. This role is two-fold –  (a)    Registrations - manages and responds to registrations.  Coordinates the registration of new and existing members.       Tasks include - 1.    Assist in the organisation of ‘Open Day’ and ensure relevant information and gear is ready. 2.    Liaise with Patricia Kelly to ensure there are no gaps in enrolment and subscription administration with regard to the registration of members. 3.    Coordinate the registration of new and existing members.  Advise Patricia. 4.    Ensure all club members are issued with a Hi-vis vest and Cap (U8’s and above), and a record is maintained. 5.    Ensure relevant information is kept on ‘hard file’ at the office. 6.    Ensure communication databases are current and accurate. 7.    Ensure relevant information is communicated to membership. 8.    Ensure all members are registered with SLSNZ. 9.    Set up google online forms for carnivals, pool champs, oceans, functions, etc 10.   Manage the SLSNZ registrations for carnivals – entering, co-ordination with coaches. 11.   Manage and respond to registrations. (b)    Junior Surf - Sunday is Junior Surf day during the season from October to March.  Preparation for Sunday sessions is essential with a keen eye for detail.  You will need to assemble a ‘sign-in’ team to – 1.    Manage and maintain the Junior sign in sheets; 2.    Undertake second hand clothing sales; 3.    Ensure clothing samples are available; and 4.    Assist with clothing orders when necessary.  5.    Ensure lanes are booked at WRAC for the 200m Badge and Pool Champs. 6.    Manage the 200m badge process. As we are in the business of saving lives and not risking them, swimming skills go hand-in-hand with surf life saving. Therefore we require Junior Surf members to attain this award so they can satisfy the mandatory requirement to compete with paddle boards in the Junior Surf Carnivals. A safety requirement is that children aged 9-13 years (U10 - U14 age group) must be proficient swimmers and have a 200 metre safety badge. This is advisable for U9s but compulsory from age 9 (Under 10s).  In view of the beach environment in which our activities are carried out, every effort should be made to ensure that all children have some swimming proficiency. It is expected that as children progress through their age groups, their swimming ability increases.  Children are not taught to swim at ‘Junior Surf’ Sunday beach sessions. Life Saving is an aquatic sport and it is strongly recommended that children participate in swimming lessons. Pool swimming is essential to develop the strength, fitness and confidence that they require to negotiate surf conditions. Children who swim regularly prove to be the most capable in the surf and ultimately gain the most from participating in a Junior Surf programme. The 200m safety award must be refreshed every year.     • Northern Men Take Premier 2 Championship For Second Year
      • <figure class=" sqs-block-image-figure intrinsic " > Photo by Lewis Bishop The Northern Men’s team have completed a double, winning their Premier 2 grade for the second year running. In a repeat of last years’ final, they met a strong Tawa Titans team, who were looking to complete their commanding season and push for promotion to the top tier competition. Northern’s ‘Honey Badgers’ had met Tawa five times already this season. During regular-season games, they had come out worse off, but in both the two previous finals matches - in the grading round final and the first semifinal, Northern had held the Titans to a draw, before besting them in penalty shoot-outs. It was after that penalty shoot-out win in the semi-finals that Northern went straight through to the grand final, while Tawa had to fight Hutt United in a second semi. The Northern boys, however, had a free weekend after their friendly match was cancelled. Northern went into the match looking like the underdogs, but went 1-nil up early after a mis-timed strike from player-coach Nathan Croad found the back of the net. The Titans had to wait until the second half to reply, taking the score to 1-1, and looking like the teams would be going to shoot-out for a third time. However, a goal from youngster and Capital rep, Samuel Bishop, put the ball away to bring the Badgers back into the lead. While Tawa’s attack was fierce, and keeper Sam French was called upon to make several saves throughout the game, as the clock counted down, the match felt firmly within Northern control. The Northern team continued to push for the entire 70 minutes, with midfielder Olly Wright chasing down a ball hit out of the Northern defensive 25, to take it into the Tawa circle. While Northern wasn’t able to capitalise off Wright’s attack, 2-1 was how the match ended, with the Northern United boys claiming the championship for the second year running.

    • Cambridge Analytica is merely Facebook’s ‘smaller, less ambitious sibling’
      • Beyond all that had gone on with AIQ and Cambridge Analytica, a lot more has come out about Facebook’s practices, things that I always suspected they do, for why else would they collect data on you even after you opted out?    Now, Sam Biddle at The Intercept has written a piece that demonstrates that whatever Cambridge Analytica did, Facebook itself does far, far more, and not just to 87 million people, but all of its users (that’s either 2,000 million if you believe Facebook’s figures, or around half that if you believe my theories), using its FBLearner Flow program.    Biddle writes (link in original): This isn’t Facebook showing you Chevy ads because you’ve been reading about Ford all week — old hat in the online marketing world — rather Facebook using facts of your life to predict that in the near future, you’re going to get sick of your car. Facebook’s name for this service: “loyalty prediction.”    Spiritually, Facebook’s artificial intelligence advertising has a lot in common with political consultancy Cambridge Analytica’s controversial “psychographic” profiling of voters, which uses mundane consumer demographics (what you’re interested in, where you live) to predict political action. But unlike Cambridge Analytica and its peers, who must content themselves with whatever data they can extract from Facebook’s public interfaces, Facebook is sitting on the motherlode, with unfettered access to staggering databases of behavior and preferences. A 2016 ProPublica report found some 29,000 different criteria for each individual Facebook user …    … Cambridge Analytica begins to resemble Facebook’s smaller, less ambitious sibling.    As I’ve said many times, I’ve no problem with Facebook making money, or even using AI for that matter, as long as it does so honestly, and I would hope that people would take as a given that we expect that it does so ethically. If a user (like me) has opted out of ad preferences because I took the time many years ago to check my settings, and return to the page regularly to make sure Facebook hasn’t altered them (as it often does), then I expect them to be respected (my investigations show that they aren’t). Sure, show me ads to pay the bills, but not ones that are tied to preferences that you collect that I gave you no permission to collect. As far as I know, the ad networks we work with respect these rules if readers had opted out at aboutads.info and the EU equivalent.    Regulating Facebook mightn’t be that bad an idea if there’s no punishment to these guys essentially breaking basic consumer laws (as I know them to be here) as well as the codes of conduct they sign up to with industry bodies in their country. As I said of Google in 2011: if the other 60-plus members of the Network Advertising Initiative can create cookies that respect the rules, why can’t Google? Here we are again, except the main player breaking the rules is Facebook, and the data they have on us is far more precise than some Google cookies.    Coming back to Biddle’s story, he sums up the company as a ‘data wholesaler, period.’ The 29,000 criteria per user claim is very easy to believe for those of us who have popped into Facebook ad preferences and found thousands of items collected about us, even after opting out. We also know that the Facebook data download shows an entirely different set of preferences, which means either the ad preference page is lying or the download is lying. In either case, those preferences are being used, manipulated and sold.    Transparency can help Facebook through this crisis, yet all we saw from CEO Mark Zuckerberg was more obfuscation and feigned ignorance at the Senate and Congress. This exchange last week between Rep. Anna Eshoo of Palo Alto and Zuckerberg was a good example:    Eshoo: It was. Are you willing to change your business model in the interest of protecting individual privacy?    Zuckerberg: Congresswoman, we have made and are continuing to make changes to reduce the amount of data …    Eshoo: No, are you willing to change your business model in the interest of protecting individual privacy?    Zuckerberg: Congresswoman, I’m not sure what that means.    In other words, they want to preserve their business model and keep things exactly as they are, even if they are probably in violation of a 2011 US FTC decree.    The BBC World Service News had carried the hearings but, as far as I know, little made it on to the nightly TV here.    This is either down to the natural news cycle: when Christopher Wylie blew the whistle on Cambridge Analytica in The Observer, it was major news, and subsequent follow-ups haven’t piqued the news editors’ interest in the same way. Or, the media were only outraged as it connected to Trump and Brexit, and now that we know it’s far, far more widespread, it doesn’t matter as much.    There’s still hope that the social network can be a force for good, if Zuckerberg and co. are actually sincere about it. If Facebook has this technology, why employ it for evil? That may sound a naïve question, but if you genuinely were there to better humankind (and not rate your female Harvard classmates on their looks) and you were sitting on a motherlode of user data, wouldn’t you ensure that the platform were used to create greater harmony between people rather than sow discord and spurring murder? Wouldn’t you refrain from bragging that you have the ability to influence elections? The fact that Facebook doesn’t, and continues to see us as units to be milked in the matrix, should worry us a great deal more than an 87 million-user data breach.

line-height:150% !important; } } Together we can end homelessness Tu'u atu, tu'u mai We're achieving great things together Many of you have seen the news headlines - about individuals rough sleeping and unsupported, or suggesting that there has been a huge increase in the numbers of people experiencing homelessness. Some of you have been in touch, asking us what DCM’s experience has been, and whether it is all “doom and gloom”. What does the data tell us? In the first quarter of this year, DCM worked with 356 people who were experiencing homelessness, compared with 312 in the same period last year. This is an increase of 14%, so yes, the numbers of homeless people we are supporting has increased - but this is not the doubling suggested by some articles. Indeed, at the sharp end, the numbers of people rough sleeping and without shelter has decreased: we worked with 118 in the first quarter of 2020 and with 96 in the first three months of this year. That’s a decrease of 19%. However the most significant increase is in the numbers of people supported who are in emergency housing. This has increased from 160 to 242, up 51%*. As we have been saying for some years now, the bad news is that there are just not enough houses. People are moving into emergency housing, and remaining there, waiting and waiting for a home to become available. While these people are off the streets, with shelter and able to practice self care, emergency housing is a form of homelessness, and not a long term solution. Despite the many challenges, people are also being supported to access their own homes and to sustain those tenancies. 70 people with long histories of homelessness are currently housed and being supported by the Aro Mai Housing First team. And 75 people at risk of losing their tenancies and falling back in to homelessness are being supported by DCM’s Sustaining Tenancies team so that they too can remain housed and go on to thrive in their tenancies. We will continue to advocate for houses, houses, houses. But with your support, the most marginalised people are being supported to achieve greater wellbeing. One such person is Anthony**... <!-- --> Celebrating one year in a house One year ago, we were sharing the story of Anthony with you, as he moved out of emergency housing and in to his own home: One year later, Anthony is thriving in his whare and he has a part-time job! Anthony continues to pop in to DCM from time to time, and enjoys regular visits from Henry on DCM’s Aro Mai Housing First team. Anthony always keeps his place clean; he enjoys watching DVDs at home and has a group of local friends who he meets up with regularly. He has been opening up more to Henry – about his life and about his family. He is also managing his money well which enables him to retain his independence. While Henry sometimes asks him if he would like some food support, Anthony declines and is able to budget for this himself.  Anthony is currently handwashing his clothes; we would love to be able to access a washing machine for him. Here at DCM we offer a safe and supportive space for the most marginalised people to come together, to build connection and relationship with us, so that we can go forward together." Callum McKenzie of McKenzie-Higham is the architect for the project. The Board is an active participant in the design work for the new school.Excavations and drillings are taking place to confirm the best location to site buildings, car parking and playgrounds. The Board has erected a sign, sponsored by Tommy’s Real Estate, on the site to update progress and advertise any future community consultation meetings.A major focus for the Board over the next few months will be the recruitment of the foundation principal. Although the principal will not officially take up his or her position until April 2011, the Board hopes to make an appointment by the end of September so that the successful applicant can have input into the planning and decision making for the school which is due to be open at the start of the 2012 school year.Board Chair, Rory O’Connor, said that the Board has also been considering the name for the school. The current name, Amesbury Drive School, was adopted as a working name by the Ministry of Education in the planning stages for the school. The Board is in favour of using Amesbury School as the name for the school. During its deliberations the Board became aware of New Zealand links with the small town of Amesbury on the Salisbury Plain in England. In the First World War, both the Maori battalion and the Wellington regiment were in camps close to the town. “The Board is very interested to know what the community thinks of the suggestion to shorten the name to Amesbury School”, said Rory O’Connor.
