    • Wellington sewing initiative Re Sew remakes the suffrage petition
      • Photo by: ELEANOR WENMAN/STUFF Over the last couple of weeks, an old boardroom inside Wellington Museum has been transformed into a fabric workshop. Wellington sewing initiative Vinnies Re Sew embarked on a Suffrage in Stitches project to recreate the 1893 suffrage petition in kind. The organisation is asking individuals and groups to pick up needle and thread to stitch 546 different panels, representing all the pages of the suffrage petition. Each panel will be stitched together to create a 274 metre long textile piece, to be displayed inside the museum early next year. Vinnies Re Sew textile recycling coordinator Caroline O'Reilly with some of the completed panels for the Suffrage in Stitches project being run in Wellington Museum. The panels are inspired by women – whether that's women that signed the petition 125 years ago, or someone within the family that was a role model. Re Sew textile recycling coordinator Caroline O'Reilly has been organising the workshops, as well as making her own panel, inspired by her mother, Mary O'Reilly. O'Reilly created her own panel with green thread in honour of her mother, Mary O'Reilly. She also wanted to chart the journeys of the women on the path to gather signatures, so she added meandering green thread to her piece of fabric. "The petition went around the country, winding up roads, through valleys. So all these loose threads represent all the roads they travelled on." Throughout September people had been dropping by Wellington Museum to talk about women who inspired them and pick up a new stitching technique or two. "People who haven't even thought they were creative have come up with some great things," O'Reilly said. Re Sew volunteer Irihāpeti Te Aho had dropped by the workshop to start on her fifth panel: one honouring the wāhine of Ngāti Kahungunu. "Women have got a strong voice in Māoridom that people don't know about," Te Aho said. She joined Vinnies Re Sew a few months ago and said she'd found it a great way to help and give back to the community. Funded by Saint Vincent de Paul, Vinnies Re Sew works to upskill people with their sewing skills, while redirecting materials from the landfill. The call is still out for people to take part in Suffrage in Stitches – the fabric workshops will be back at Wellington Museum in October, December and January for a week each. So far, people from as far as Queenstown and the Coromandel, as well as some people in San Francisco have put their hands up to make a panel. The deadline to have a fabric panel in is February 27. * For details on Suffrage in Stitches, email resew@vinnieswgtn.org.nz. - Stuff Reporter: Eleanor Wenman Permalink

    • P2 Men Vs Hutt 23/06/07 Lost 2 - 5
      • Yet another game where we showed that we can match it with the best teams in the grade. The game started with us with most of the ball, however Hutt got the first goal of the game. We responded with a goal from Jason Eade to even it up at 1-1 in the 2nd half. Hutt then got a couple quick goals, due to us not marking well enough. Jason eade finished off the scoring with another goal from a good team attacking move. The game also included a strong first up appearance from Paul Gardiner filling in for an absent Chad at the back.

    • Mixed bag in Round 5
      • The Wellington Saints have wrapped up their Round 5 fixtures with a mixed bag of results, losing to the Canterbury Rams before bouncing back with a win over the Southland Sharks. The team's first game on Friday night saw them face a determined Canterbury side, who took control early and never looked back. Despite the Saints' best efforts, they were unable to claw back the deficit, eventually falling 102-88 to the Rams.

    • Back on track: not so new
      • Most of you will have noticed the front-page headline in yesterday's Dominion Post: $200m to ease Wellington rail misery. The more observant among you may have noticed that the improvements mentioned in the sidebar (not online) don't quite add up to $200m, but a slightly less impressive $135m. The even more observant (and presumably long-suffering) among you might also have noticed that many of the upgrades sounded very familiar. Is this really news?

    • Aitken Angst
      • We got a rare insight into Greater Wellington Regional Council-Wellington City Council dynamics when regional councillor Judith Aitken posted this odd statement on Celia Wade-Brown’s Facebook about her (last time I checked, fellow Labour Party) colleague Daran Ponter: This prompted the following stinging rebuke from Daran Ponter and Wellington City councillor Paul Eagle: Good on Ponter for calling her out. Oh, Baby Boomer with a 100% subsided Gold Card, please tell me more about how we can’t increase public transport subsidies. This is staggering. If you’re a Regional Councillor, you would need to have been hiding under a rock for the past few years not to be aware of the issues around public transport. And you’d expect someone who has been on the GWRC since 2001 to already be discussing issues with their WCC colleagues and community stakeholders. Aitken doesn’t even live in the constituency area she is elected to represent (Wellington City), enjoys fully subsidised public transport with her tax-payer funded Gold Card, and is one of those local government shapeshifters, like Helene Ritchie, who get elected to both a council and a health board purely on name recognition, then aren’t in a hurry to leave anytime soon. She should retire and let a new, fresh, and forward thinking person take her seat and actually represent Wellington City. They deserve better.

    • Review: Dating’s a Drag
      • Dating apps have seen a decrease in usage, signalling a shift in the way people want to approach dating. Selina Simone and Homer Neurotic, two of Wellington's popular drag performers, have come up with a unique solution: Dating's a Drag (pun intended). This event has become an annual occurrence, specifically catering to members of the queer community. I recently attended their She 4 Her event at Mishmosh on May 24th. They also have a They 4 Them event planned for June 7th and an inclusive Queer 4 Queer event scheduled for June 21st.

Here’s three that we know of. First up is the original, the former roasting shop in Wigan St, composed of two little dwellings that are now home to a good bar.

"I was flabbergasted" said Zephyr Rovers Manager Steve Hall "we're a pretty clean team since Charlie and Chris left and whilst we've had the odd discussion with a referee, I can't recall it ever being abusive". Hall said he was even more perplexed when hearing that "that guy with the grey beard is your worst offender".

    • Real-time Bus Information
      • I'm a big fan of real-time bus information - electronic signs that use GPS technology to tell you precisely when the next bus is coming, rather than having to rely on the theoretical arrival time of the printed timetable. These have been up and running in Auckland for a few years now, and when I was living there it made catching a bus just that much easier. So it's exciting to see that the Greater Wellington regional council are in the process of planning a real time bus info system.

    • Skipper's century tips Onslow to victory
      • Daniel Pile has had the Midas touch this month. In the space of nine days, the Onslow College skipper guided his team to three wins and picked up his first century and first five-wicket haul for the first XI. Pile has had to wait for both milestones, as the year 13 student is in his fourth year with the senior team. A five wicket bag had looked a matter of when, rather than if, but the 17-year-old could have got long odds on his chances of scoring a premier one century.
