    • Hi fishes. Well the LGWM thing was announced supporting the big, most expensive package. As you know I got my issues, discussed in 3-Big-Flaws here. Thought I’d come back and address a few bonus thoughts. First up: The Gauntlet Tunnel. To recap. The selected package aims for trams to Island Bay, frustratingly bypassing Newtown, and a busway to Kilbirnie and Miramar frustratingly attached to a new highway tunnel.

Having won the title five months prior, Ali was in the city simply because Heretaunga-based coach Alan Scaife had invited him.

    Letha Whitham's Trip to Sakai and the Senshu marathon

    • Quite a late start for what im used to with Marathons, I definitely appreciated the extra time in bed this morning. The day was clear and still with bright sunshine, a whole world away from the windy storms I had experienced while training for this race in Wellington. I was happy the weather was on our side even if it was a lowly 9 degrees on the start line.

Maranui had 12 senior athletes competing. The team came home with 4 gold, 7 Silver and 5 bronze medals. Holly Reynolds dominated in the U19 womens. Smoking her opposition in the iron woman and board taking golds then silver in the Run Swim Run and surf race and ski race. The team did really well in team events with a bronze in the U17 mens tube rescue, Silver in the U19 women's tube rescue, Gold in the U19 women's beach sprint relay. Amelia and Ella took silver and bronze in the 2km run, Bruno took bronze in the U17 beach sprint and Joe took bronze in the U15 beach sprint, silver in 2km & boys U17 silver in beach relay. There were other good results that can be seen on Waves. A team of 8, Ella, Amelia, Ruby, Holly, Tom, Bruno, Joe and Kano are heading to Eastern Regional Champs at Mount Maunganui as part of their campaign to Nationals in Christchurch. Rhys Speirs Director of Sport / Head Coach Maranui SLSC <!-- --> U11-U14 Athletes, Supporters and Coaches JUNIOR SURF What a break our juniors have had, Wellington brought some great beach days…. 13th of January saw a team of 12 U11-U14 athletes compete at the Central Regional Junior Champs (CRJC), Fitzroy, New Plymouth. Our young participants showed the Maranui values coming away with several medals and putting the club 7th overall in our region. Well done everyone. Last week we had our annual trip to Papamoa with the development team and tamariki planning to attend Oceans. What an amazing week. Training with local clubs Papamoa & Mount Maunganui helps the development of skills in conditions we can’t provide in Wellington. The coaches were super proud of the effort, resilience and confidence our team showed, even when a large fishy predator turned up. For all our U10s we have next years camp booked for 18-22nd January 2024 for anyone who wants to enjoy more time in the surf developing skills. Catch any of the development coaching team to discuss this programme if you are interested. A small team represented us at Riversdale carnival and I want to send a massive thanks to the parents who stepped up to make it happen for the kids.     Seriously good.

    • There's a great line in a Simpsons episode (well there's a plethora of them really) when C. Montgomery Burns is viewing the less-than-flattering nude portrait of him which Marge has painted. In his typically non-plussed manner, he states "I don't know much about art, but I know what I hate; and I don't hate this."Now, I don't profess to know much about art either, but Adagio-Seriously Sophisticated Circus had me enthralled and not thinking about hate one bit. From the opening minute, when each of the performers was introduced to the audience in a sequence which had us in a quandry as to which performer to focus on, to the mirror-image closure, I was amazed, amused, and just plain entertained in a way that I'm not generally accustomed to. But I liked it. A lot.Without being able to properly dissect the performance, to verbalise the nuances of the techniques deployed, or even identify the performers correctly, I'll at least have a crack and break it down to a Monty Burns-esqe critique. Adagio combines live music, comedy, pantomime, dance and most of all (as the name implies) amazing feats of gymnastic ability on an array of 'equipment' (chairs, swings, ropes etc). The two main protagonists were a diminutive male and a blonde female whose pure strength and incredible poise was so immense and impressive that you would think it looked so easy, but then you'd digest what they were doing and imagine trying to do it yourself, summising with a mental "no way!". This was my second experience at Downstage, after the also brilliant Strike earlier this year, and if the quality of these two shows is an indicator of the fare on offer, then I can see myself making more regular visits. And I'd recommend that everyone should get along and experience Adagio... it's been extended, so there's no reason not too.     • Zephyr Rovers Chairmen George Nash said it was a sad day for the club after Rovers failed to make the top eight after a 9 - 4 loss to Mercer was followed by a win to Whites. "We looked safe with two weeks to go but we lost three on the trot so we have no excuses". Nash said the club would not be making any rash decisions with regard to the future of Manager Steve Hall. "We don't want to be hasty over our next move" said Nash "so we'll probably sack him tomorrow when we've had a chance to sleep on it".

    BNU Pilsner v Miramar Rangers 17 July 2010

    • At 2.25pm Miramar Rangers comprised a sorry rain-soaked crew of six players, so how easy it would have been for Pilsner to claim the points and warm up for the rugby with a few jars in the comfort of the pub. But hey, you turn up and you want to play, rain or shine - and amazingly so did they. By 2.45pm the home team had amassed ten players, one of whom was a mate of Carl’s who had just come along with us for a look-see, so it was game on, reffed by Smithy, albeit in the wrong colour jacket.

    • 8 Days a week - There are probably a few names for playing 3 games in 8 days and Coach Killer is probably one. On Saturday Ories had the Premiers at Maoribank, Senior 1sts at Ngati Toa, Senior 2nds at Delaney and Colts at Polo, all playing at the same time so to say resources were stretched is an understatement. To come away with 3 wins out of 4 is a great result and a credit to the coaches and players. On Wednesday the Prems, S1st and S2nd play again then on Saturday once more – certainly not the greatest decision by the WRFU.

    • Hi all. It’s been a long time since I’ve posted (feels like it could be ten years). But I’m back to raise some major flaws with the LGWM plans because this has been a near and dear subject to me over the past 20 years. None of these flaws appear to be necessary compromises forced by cost or other constraints. And it appears we could fix them without additional cost. If we do fix them, we’ll have a much better transit network for Wellington. We won’t get a shot to do this over, so we should do it right.

• • Metlink On Demand bus-hailing service to be extended after successful trial

    • A public transport service for the ride-hailing era is expanding in reach. Metlink On Demand, the app-based, demand-driven bus service, will cover a larger area following a decision by Greater Wellington councillors on 22 June. Metlink On Demand finished a successful 12-month trial on 16 May, having completed over 40,000 trips for the community. The trial will now be extended for another year, and the service will be expanded from Tawa and Grenada North to include Porirua CBD. As the trial continues, Metlink will also assess the viability of extending the service to Aotea and Cannons Creek.
