    • Operation Details Date/Time:  Wed, 20/05/2020 - 13:15 - 15:30 Operation Type:  SAROP Cat 1 People Assisted:  2 Total Volunteer Hours:  9 A vessel broke down up towards Pukerua Bay. It was towed back towards Mana but then dropped out in the bay off Plimmerton and told to get someone else to take them in, or they'd pick them up again on the way back from fishing. The vessel appeared to be taking on water so the skipper placed a Mayday call, which Maritime Radio responded to. Police then tasked us to respond to tow them in.     • I hesitate to even bother to post this, as the topic seems so small and the problem is so easily solved, but apparently the Busdriver’s Tramways Union has been “in discussions” for over 18 months on this topic, and they still don’t have an answer. Jesus wept. The incompetence of people in charge! It is all very solvable, for the price of less than $20. Present situation – with intolerably reflective white surfaces inside The problem, dear reader, is that the new buses, apparently only the electrically powered new buses, are “dangerous” at night as there are too many reflections, caused by bright lights inside the new buses, and the driver cannot safely see the road.

    • Operation Details Date/Time:  Sat, 30/04/2011 - 09:00 - 15:00 Operation Type:  Other People Assisted:  10 Coastguard Mana spent the day on the water with a crew of volunteers to assist the organisers of the Mana Ocean Race Challenge - a 29km paddle for outrigger canoes, kayaks and surf skis that took them from Mana to Paraparaumu Beach. Conditions on the day started off calm with light southerlies, but the wind built to around 20 knots later in the course creating some more challenging seas conditions for the competitors.     Miramar v BNU 1sts - 25th August 2013

    • 2pm, David Farrington Park We headed to David Farrington Park to play Miramar in the final game of the season.  Following Saturday's results, we believed a solitary point would be enough to keep us clear of the relegation places.   The game kicked off with the intensity of a cup final.  The Brooklyn crowd were vocal in their support, the large travelling contingent of fans certainly made the lads feel 10 feet tall.  The game was being played at a cracking pace: a strong Miramar side featuring former All White Campbell Banks and current Solomon Islands International Henry Fa'arodo, was being matched by the heroes in red and black.   The first 30 minutes was fairly even.  Both sides were spraying the ball around with confidence and great speed,  the Miramar coach admitting the game was being played at Capital Premier standard.   The deadlock was broken when Miramar smashed a volley from the top of the box after 32 minute s, a quality strike that left Zen no chance.  Miramar doubled their lead 10 minutes later from a free kick, the Miramar player's run not being picked up, leaving him unmarked at the far post for an easy finish.  2-nil down and all to play for.   BNU were awarded a penalty right on half time for a handball in the box.  Paul Sanchez, who has been great from the penalty spot, strode forward with purpose, only to watch his shot go wide of the left hand upright.  The score remained 2-nil to Miramar at half time.   There was calm in the changing room, as we were creating a number of chances and our covering defence had prevented Miramar from testing Zen with shots on goal.  We believed if we kept to our standards we could get back into the game.  The next goal would be the most important of the match.   The 2nd half started at the same pace as the first.  We continued to press high up the pitch to prevent Miramar from getting into any kind of rhythm.  Their increased ball speed certainly tested us and the class and experience of their players was stretching us right across the pitch.  However, we were not giving up without a fight and were rewarded for our efforts when Paul Clune smashed home after 58 minutes to bring the score back to 2-1.  This also bought the crowd back into the game, they had been fantastic throughout.   Ben Goodwin, who had been introduced at half time, went close on two occasions shortly after, with almost identical shots from the edge of the area.  His pace and direct style were causing problems for the Miramar back four.  We were dealt a blow on 70 minutes when Campbell Banks finally got the better of Damian Gurnick, turning on the edge of the area, to beat Zen in the left hand bottom corner.  3-1 down, with 20 minutes to play.  It was time to gamble and throw numbers forward.  We had nothing to lose and everything to gain.   2 minutes later Banks was at it again, losing his marker and slotting his 2nd to make it 4-1 with 15 minutes to play.  You would forgive BNU if heads dropped, but not with this team, the lads weren't prepared to throw in the towel, and in true BNU fashion they fought for every possession and continued to push forward.   Tom Bisley and Ben Purser were introduced, giving us 4 strikers on the pitch for the final 15 minutes of the season.  Tom Bisley went close, not once but twice, but unfortunately shot wide on both occasions.   As we pressed forward, there were inevitably gaps left at the back and Banks completed his hat-trick with 3 minutes to play.  Just to rub salt into the wound, Miramar scored a 6th with the last kick of the game. 6-1 the final score which in no way reflects how close the game was.   As the lads left the pitch, and rightly applauded the large BNU crowd, our attention now turned to the Island Bay vs Seatoun match being played at Wakefield Park.  A Seatoun win would see us clear of the bottom 2.  We received update after update from our Chairman Martin Gray, who was finally able to phone through the result we had all been waiting for, 2-1 victory to Seatoun.   Back in the Miramar clubrooms, there was a mix of cheer and relief as we believed we could now reflect on a season of highs and lows.   Strong performances, in this our last game, from Captain Andy Cochrane, who was all industry and quality in the middle of the park, Damian Gurnick, who put his body on the line time and time again, and Man of the Match Simon Barker, who won everything in the air and reminded everyone of his undoubted talent.   A special thanks to the crowd who really helped the lads dig deep right to the end.  You guys were fantastic!   I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Martin Gray, Adam Brownie and the Committee for all of their support over the last 2 seasons.  Special thanks needs to go to our physio Dan Sainsbury and my team manager Annie Bannister for all of their hard work and high standards set and maintained throughout the season.   Finally, I would like to publicly thank the playing group for their contribution to the 2013 season.  It has been a pleasure working with you all this year.  You have represented this club in the best possible way, on and off the pitch.  You all bought into the plan and genuinely wanted to play football the way it's meant to be played.  Andy Cochrane and Simon Barker led the team each week with class and integrity.  Without them, the task would have been so much harder.  Thank you both.   I look forward to seeing you all this weekend at the Prize Giving.  Hopefully we can sit down over a beer and celebrate what has been an eventful season.     • Things I learnt whilst collecting at New World Miramar this week … They have Free WiFi You can use free wet wipes to clean the trolley handle before you start shopping You can dispose of your plastic bags for recycling Peter Croft’s favourite fruit is oranges at the de Kids still get a free slice of luncheon at the deli There are 110 white tiles in each section of the floor 1kg of pre-packed lemons cost $4.99 To ensure you have clean hands there is a hand sanitiser in the vege section – on the left One guy from USA has lived here for 3 years and only just discovered we have 10 cent coins There is a guy in Miramar who views shopping as the least favourite thing to do If you forget your grocery bag, you might be able to borrow a boomerang bag. There is a typo in the sign Thanks, see you soon (Can you spot it? Ask Lucy and she will agree with me!) One thing I did notice was a family who tied their dog up outside while they did their shopping. I wonder if anyone asked the dog what he wanted his life to look like – to be in a loving family but not able to come and go freely, or to live in the wild and not be loved?     • Operation Details Date/Time:  Tue, 22/10/2013 - 19:30 - 20:30 Operation Type:  CG Operation (good samaritan) People Assisted:  1 Total Volunteer Hours:  14 Following the successful rescue of a windsurfer that had been in the cold water near Tokaapapa Reef for over an hour, Pelorus and Trust Porirua Rescue were redeployed to assist in searching for and recovering his board. It had been left behind so that he could be transported quickly to awaiting paramedics for checks at Mana Cruising Club. The board was successfully loacated and recovered back to base. If you are hearing impaired the Riley Centre can be a challenging environment: please email admin@whs.school.nz and we will aim to accommodate your bookings separately.   Revised guidance on testing for COVID-19 The Ministry of Education has circulated the following information to all schools: At a time where there are increasing numbers of colds and other winter illnesses, the Ministry of Health has revised its guidance on who might need testing for COVID-19. It is important to note that there is currently no known community transmission of COVID-19 in New Zealand. The vast majority of adults, children and young people with symptoms consistent with COVID-19 will not have COVID-19. Symptoms of COVID-19 can include new onset or worsening of one or more of the following: Cough Fever Sore throat Runny nose Shortness of breath/difficulty breathing Temporary loss of smell Health’s information on who should get tested notes that people with any of the COVID-19 symptoms who are close contacts of confirmed cases, have recently travelled overseas, or been in contact with recent travellers, should get assessed. If anyone has symptoms but is unsure if they have been exposed to COVID-19, they should ring Healthline on 0800 358 5453 or their GP for advice. Over winter there are many other viruses about that can cause people to feel unwell and have symptoms similar to those of COVID-19. Some people with symptoms consistent with COVID-19 may be tested as part of Health’s ongoing surveillance to ensure that there is no community transmission in New Zealand. If they are not close contacts of confirmed cases, have not recently travelled overseas, or have not been in contact with recent travellers, then there is no need for them to self-isolate while awaiting the test result, and they can return to school once they are feeling well. If not recommended for testing, they will be able to return to school or their early learning service when they are feeling well and no longer displaying symptoms. Wallace Street roadworks update The current phase of the Wallace Street roadworks is due for completion by the end of the month. As long as the rain holds off, Wallace Street should be re-opened to through traffic on 1 July. Following this, however, works will need to get underway along Wallace Street, near Massey University’s entrance, to upgrade wastewater pipes. This will take place in off peak hours (9.00am-4.00pm) on weekdays and traffic will often be reduced to a single lane with Stop / Go control. This is likely to take two months to complete. What’s happening? Economists breakfast with Dr Allan Bollard On Thursday, Year 13 Economics students Sarah Bennett and Rachel Woolcott, attended a Cullen Breakfast at the Wellington Club. Speaking at this week’s breakfast was Dr Alan Bollard, who has held numerous senior positions in Government and interGovernmental agencies. Dr Bollard discussed the economic impact of the covid epidemic and then participated in a question and answer session.  Sarah said  “the range of angles in the topic discussed was thought provoking”. Rachel commented “it was a very interesting discussion and I enjoyed listening to his jokes and insight.”         Year 13 performance of ‘Girls like that’   Evan Placey’s Girls Like That is an ensemble play that explores the pressures young people face today in the face of advancing technologies. Year 13 Drama students produced and performed this play this week. The students are to be congratulated for their sophisticated performance which was an enduring piece of theatre, an achievement all the more impressive when considering that much of this production was conceived and developed during lockdown. Congratulations to all, and to Drama teacher Roger Mantel.       He Kākano  The He Kākano students have been engaged in a range of creative activities, cognitive thinking skills and maths throughout the week.      Winter in the garden The weather over the past few weeks has seen our horticulture students spend time on maintenance, cleaning and repairing tools including secateurs. They will be well prepared for winter pruning and work outside once the weather improves.    Instrumental & vocal lessons update If your Junior student is interested in taking instrumental / vocal lessons but has not yet enrolled, please download the form from the Student Hub and hand in or email the completed form to Fritz Wollner Lessons will be reorganised for Terms 3 and 4. If students have not been attending regularly, they need to see Mr Wollner as soon as possible to ensure they do not lose their spot. Achievements National Bridge Speech competition place secured Year 13 Amelia Smith qualified for a place in the National Bridge Speech competition following her success in the regional Chinese speech competition last week. Amelia will represent the North Island outside Auckland region in the competition, to be held at Victoria University on Sunday 2 August. At that event, each qualified candidate will need to present a speech, perform to demonstrate a skill and answer questions in Chinese. Finalists will represent New Zealand and compete with candidates from all over the world in October. We wish Amelia luck as she progresses through the competition. Sports Junior girls football For the first time in many years WHS has a junior girls football team out in competition. Their most recent game resulted in a very close 2-1 loss but the girls had fun and were very impressive despite some players not having very much experience. This team could not have gone ahead without the support of parents who helped with both transport and officiating.  Special thanks to Bea Gladding and Jennifer Argyle who are the coach/manager dream team who make this team possible. Below are some photos of the action and sideline support. Basketball Basketball is underway with all teams at WHS having played at least one game so far. Big thanks to Jason Reddish who is taking on the entire boys programme at school which includes four teams and doing a great job. Another big thanks to Nick Andrews who along with a parent is coaching the Senior girls team. Junior Boys play on a Tuesday and another junior team plays on a Thursday. All Senior teams play on Fridays, with the top boys and girls team playing at the ASB Centre. Below are some photos from the first junior basketball game. Boys 1st XI football The 1st XI played their first game of the season, bringing home a 5-1 victory against St Patrick’s Silverstream. Their next fixture is against Newlands College this coming weekend.

MSP have recruited well this season particularly in the backs and welcomed some Hurricanes experience in the Proctor brothers to the starting line-up. It was old-timers day for MSP and a fair few of the older members had turned out to their clubrooms to preload! Conditions The weather was fine with the wind blowing diagonally down the pitch from the north into the south-eastern corner where the field dips away a little. the sun was low in the first half and difficult for OBU to deal with playing into it from the southeastern corner. It would be even worse for MSP in the second half. OBU was playing from Gym end toward the road in the first half. John ‘JC’ Cable & Jaesen Sumner were kindly present to keep an eye on the play while I wrestled with the screen lock on my phone. We are positioned up beside the video platform on the northern side. Notable performances The front row was mighty but didn’t really get the rewards it may have felt entitled to. The lineout applied lots of pressure and caused plenty of mistakes from MSP Paddy Carter was immense around the field. He is becoming a valuable utility player covering locks and flanks and is certainly a lineout option with outstanding aerial skills whichever position he is in. Shamus and Caleb deserve a mention every week. Hardworking, rugged and abrasive all over the park. In the backs, Sam Reid was once again rock-solid barely making a mistake. Ty Poe is a consistent performer growing each week. Callum and Dale are a great pairing of skill, speed and determination. Kyle really stood up in this match and had several classy touches including the chip and regather for the try. How the game unfolded 2 mins The tone for the match was set early scrum-wise by OBU. A powerful shunt spoilt the MSP feed which resulted in a knock-on in the backline due to the backfoot ball. 5 mins A series of pick and goes near the MSP line in the left corner resulted in a penalty to OBU. Dale steps up and nails the shot on the 22m line about 15 in from the left touchline OBU 3-0 6 mins From the kick-off there is a penalty for a high shot on Paddy. The penalty kick doesn’t find touch. The kick is followed up well enough to pressure MSP whop are finally able to clear to the touch after a couple of minor wobbles. 9 mins MSP manages to get it wide to their left side close to the touchline in front of us. The MSP player makes a great burst upfield but eventually, it breaks down and we go back to the penalty the ref was playing advantage for. The shot is successfully taken from 35 metres out and just to the right of the posts. 3-3 13 mins MSP puts up an up and under (or ‘Gary Owen’ for the northerners), then they regain at the ensuing ruck and the halfback chips downfield. Sam Reid has no choice but to run it into touch near our line on the far side of the paddock. From the lineout MSP throw is not straight so OBU gets to clear from the scrum. Pressure diffused for now. 17 mins MSP sets up a driving maul from a lineout but OBU gets the drive on. The maul breaks up with MSP players in behind our forwards. MSP flanker and halfback both have a dab at the line but it’s the right-winger who busts through for the score. The conversion misses. MSP 8-3 20 mins OBU charge down an MSP clearing kick. Ty Poe claims the loose ball and scores it under the sticks. The conversion was successful. OBU 10-8 23 mins A great move from OBU down the left-hand side of the field, Shamus makes lots of ground commits the defence and sets Paddy for the pass but it goes behind Paddy. MSP runs it out. There is a brief altercation. The Assistant Referee puts his flag out and a discussion ensues with the ref. The referee calls the captains together and presumably issues a warning to both teams to keep it clean despite what looked like a punch thrown by the red player. 24 mins Kyle darts down the blindside and chips past the first line of defence. He regathers under pressure from 3 defenders and scoots the rest of the way down the far sideline to score it in the corner. Conversion unsuccessful. OBU 15-8 28 mins Shamus crashes through the defence with some good pace and offloads to Finbarr. Reece ratchets up the pressure with an attack down the close touchline. OBU is right on the MSP goal line but are penalised. Can’t tell from our position what it was for. Unfortunately, someone says something to the ref so we deservedly get marched 10 metres. 30 mins OBU is in MSPs half again and looking likely but are penalised for holding on in the tackle. Good play from MSP flanker to beat the cleaners to the ball. MSP kick into the far corner. From the lineout MSP over-throw the ball and Kyle makes a great 40-meter clearance. 39 mins MSP is penalised for backs offside. Callum steps up to have a long-range shot from just inside the MSP half and out to the left. Kick misses Halftime OBU 15-8 41 mins MSP on the attack, OBU backs are caught offside 35 metres out and slightly to the right of the posts. Kick landed OBU 15-11 46 mins A long sequence of pick and goes on the MSP line. An MSP player crashes over the top believing he is onside and concedes a very obvious penalty. Dale successfully takes the shot. OBU 18-11 49 mins OBU concede a penalty for holding near the 10-metre line straight out in front. Kick is successfully taken. OBU 18-14 52 mins Paddy claims the kickoff with a memorable AFL-style leap. 55 mins OBU move the ball wide to Sam Reid who slips through the first tackle but can’t get through the second and eventually the ball runs into touch. MSP again overthrow the lineout. Morgan tries to gather the ball but knocks it on. MSP feed to the scrum. 57 mins MSP manages to clear the scrum which is under pressure and begin a promising period of attack near the OBU line. OBU player gest over the ball and wins the penalty which is cleared to touch taking some of the pressure off but we lose the lineout. Matt Fowler makes it on for his 50th replacing Kyle Preston at the base of the scrum. Sam Godwin on James Poloniati Off 60 mins A great driving maul from OBU. Eventually, MSP concedes the penalty and OBU elects to kick to the corner. Another great driving maul and an MSP forward rolls the dice by dropping it and gets away with it this time. Eventually, OBU knocks the ball forward. 63 mins MSP clear their line from a massive kick by James Proctor playing at 2nd 5. He kicked from the 5-meter line and the ball eventually goes out just on OBUs side of halfway. 66 mins Almost an action replay with another great clearing kick from Proctor. 73 mins MSP are hot on the attack and looking dangerous. There is an OBU player down. It turns out to be Matt Fowler in his 50th. Kyle comes on to replace him as a precaution. Morgan comes back on sporting a bandage on his head. I missed where he went off! Sam Coombs leaves the field. Taine Plumtree is replaced by Josh Gimblett 75 mins There is a series of Pick and goes on our line. Eventually #19 James Tuia crashes over. Conversion unsuccessful. MSP 19-18 75 mins Sam Coombs is on for Finbarr Kerr-Newell and somewhere along the way Matt Sleith came on at hooker for Kenan Gillson. OBU just need to hold the ball and work it back up the field to get in position to pressure MSP into a mistake. OBU puts the drive on from a lineout but the ball is knocked on. 78 mins OBU desperate now tries to run it out to the other end of the field but MSP turn the ball over in our 22 and the 1st 5 for MSP lines up and slots the drop goal. MSP 22-18 That’s the way the match ended. A riveting game with a very tight finish. I get the feeling that this match could well be replayed over the coming weeks in a semi or a final, but let’s not count our chickens just yet. Another almighty challenge awaits against Tawa out at Lyndhurst Park next week.     Kennett Brothers inducted into Mountain Bike Hall of Fame

    • The legendary Kennett Bro's have taken their rightful place in the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame! Their list of achievements covers everything from being a pioneer of the sport in NZ, competing on the world stage, publishing, thinking up and organizing events (the Karapoti Classic and Tour Aotearoa ring bell?!) and, of course, being the driving force behind the establishment of Makara Peak and its development over the 20 years since. From the get go, they have mixed mountain biking with a strong conservation ethos which now a common theme throughout NZ. They are a modest bunch - but the "Three Brothers" track name is a tip of the hat in their direction. That is the most they have let us do. The electronic scarer was making a lot of noise on a still night and the local residents asked noise control to get it turned off.  We took the Harbour Master and a Noise Control officer out to the vessel to disable it, with the owner's permission. Due to the falling tide it had to remain there for the day and we returned the owner back to it at 9pm to retrieve it. We used MR2 to tow it off the sand once the water level was high enough and safely returned to the launching ramp between the bridges. We were asked by the pole mooring manager to assist with getting it back on its mooring so that it didn't damage the yacht. MR1 was used to push it around and secure it back in place. Also assisted the Mana Marina manager to recover the turning bouys from outside the entrance that had broken away. Coastguard Mana activated a callout but were stood down at 15:30, just as we were about to depart Mana Marina, as the diver had been located safe and well. A vessel had dropped off the diver at 12:30 and then went to a different location, due to return and pick them up at 13:20. When the vessel returned they couldn't locate the diver and started a search, calling Police by phone.     October 2009 Update

    • Maranui Surf Life Saving Club
    • On Monday 5th October 2009 there was a meeting held between Maranui Surf Life Saving Club and Wellington City Council officers. This meeting was called by the council to discuss a new proposed outcome for the fire damaged Maranui building; as revealed by the Dominion Post on Friday the 2nd October. The concept they put to the Maranui members was to demolish the 4 council buildings on the Lyall Beach and replace them with a purpose built “Super Building” which would incorporate Lyall Bay surf club, Maranui surf club, NZAAT Beach House Art Gallery, toilet and shower facilities etc. Maranui Surf Club members were surprised and disappointed with yet another delay and are unsure how this new concept is relevant to the repair of the Maranui building.

• • 2022 Div II – What a blast!

    • The team set off for Dunedin to compete in the Div II competition on Saturday 7 May for five days of racing. The team consisted of 12 swimmers and 4 parents, with another 2 swimmers and 2 parents joining the team later in the week. We’d lost one team member due to testing positive for Covid a couple of days earlier, but this was the largest team the club has taken to Div II in recent memory. On arrival, we explored Larnach Castle and the iconic Baldwin street (the worlds steepest street). We spent hours at the castle and the kids were fascinated by how people lived back then. We escaped Baldwin street without any injuries, the main aim of coach Nadia!

Being a school trustee is an important role that needs people with a range of skills and experiences and in order that the Board reflects our community, ideally we want a good balance of gender, ethnicity and skills.  At Wellington High School, the Board of Trustees work to promote the culture and ethos of Wellington High School. We  focus on student achievement and support educational opportunities for all students in our school.  If you are interested in becoming a member of the Board of Trustees you should be prepared to make a contribution to the work of the Board, to act as part of a governance team, have the skills to ask the right questions and be prepared to participate in making decisions. Specific skills are not a requirement, however governance experience, financial management and legal skills are useful.  We would like to really encourage people to put their names forward to be nominated for election to our school board.
