    Review: Twenty Minutes to Nine

    • am genuinely lost for words, trying to describe Twenty Minutes to Nine. It was nostalgic, raw, grim and witty, heart-sinking and furious and so painfully wise. Absolutely phenomenal. The show is personal even before it starts. I’m sitting in the front of two rows of seats, so there’s no doubt it’ll be an intimate show. Amanda (Santuccione (They/Her), the show’s writer and performer) asks what we’re up to afterwards, if we’d be alright to wait another 5 minutes for the last few people. In the end it’s me, a mother-and-adult-son duo, three other women and Amanda. We chat back and forth about hills and penguins, public transport and spilt beer. Then suddenly, with only the quieting of the house music, it begins.

    • Wellington United's latest centurion, Asha Strom, is something of an unsung hero. Playing in a defensive midfield role she doesn't get in the spotlight like those that score the goals, she just gets on with her job, a job she does so well and has set a very high standard in she really has to have an exceptional game to get noticed. 2018 Dutch import Suzanne Giesen, commented on her time at the club "it was fantastic playing with Asha, as she did all the hard work which allowed me to push forward and attack more" Playing in the role she does, Asha doesn't get many chances to score goals, and while she has scored just four in her 100 games they have all been memorable shots from about 25-30 meters. Goals that her teammates have dubbed "Asha specials"

The couple phoned Police on 111 from a cell phone at approximately 9.45pm after their boat hit rocks a few hundred metres off shore; losing power and taking on water. The Police, Westpac Rescue Helicopter and Coastguard were all sent to the aid of the couple, who managed to climb into a small dinghy (in choppy conditions) as their boat sank beneath them. • • Runabout broken down on "The Bridge"

    • Operation Details Date/Time:  Sat, 21/04/2012 - 16:00 - 17:30 Operation Type:  SAROP Cat 1 People Assisted:  3 Total Volunteer Hours:  10 A 20ft vessel broke down near the south end of Mana Island after encountering Kelp on the shallow area between Green Point and Mana Island, known as "The Bridge". There were 3 people on board and had been fishing in the area. They were wearing lifejackets and made contact with Police, contact method unknown at time of writing. Coastguard Mana was called out by Police and CRV Trust Porirua Rescue was dispatched to tow them home with 6 crew on board. The vessel was taken under tow and safely returned to Mana Marina. • • Swimmers caught in tidal stream in channel

    • Operation Details Date/Time:  Thu, 09/02/2012 - 16:30 - 16:45 Operation Type:  SAROP Cat 1 People Assisted:  2 Total Volunteer Hours:  1 Two swimmers were caught in the tidal flow exiting the channel into Porirua Harbour on an outgoing tide. This pushed them out of the channel entrance towards Goat Point. The swimmers were spotted waving and screaming for assistance and Coastguard Mana was activated by Police to assist. A training crew was already onboard Trust Porirua Rescue in the marina, engines fired up and ready to depart on a training excercise, when the call came through. They were able to depart immediately and were on scene within 3 minutes of the call from Police.     • Operation Details Date/Time:  Sun, 27/02/2011 - 06:00 - 14:30 Operation Type:  CG Operation (good samaritan) People Assisted:  2 Porirua Rescue stood by the 9 metre yacht "Overload" this morning she was participating in the 2 handed around North Island race and damaged her shift keel mechanism in heavy seas North of Kapiti on Saturday. Horowhenua and Kapiti Coast units were involved in shepherding the yacht down to a safe anchorage overnight. The Coastguard Mana Incident Management Team became involved late Saturday evening and made contact with the yachts master and with members of the Mana Cruising Club for advice on getting "Overload" which draws 2.7 metres into safety at Mana.     • Operation Details Date/Time:  Thu, 21/01/2016 - 00:05 - 20:30 Operation Type:  CG Operation (good samaritan) People Assisted:  0 Total Volunteer Hours:  81 This salvage task followed on from the resuce operation of the morning.  MR1 carried a salvage crew and Smashers owner out to the island to do a damage assesment and then repair work. MR1 was standing by the operation for salvage crew safety and sea support. some transfer tasks were carried out for materiel and personel, before Smasher was seaworthy and the boat was able to be pulled (astern) off the shore and the tow line transferred to the bow for a tow into safe water where the boats were rafted up and Smasher was delivered to the liftout dock.     • Operation Details Date/Time:  Fri, 13/12/2019 - 20:00 - Sat, 14/12/2019 - 23:00 Operation Type:  CG Operation (good samaritan) People Assisted:  5 Total Volunteer Hours:  162 A 6m runabout ran aground on a sand bank returning from a day of  ski biscuiting and wake boarding in Paremata Harbour (Pautahanui Arm of Porirua Harbour)  at approximately 2:45pm today. Due to the falling tide it had to remain there for the day and we returned the owner back to it at 9pm to retrieve it. We used MR2 to tow it off the sand once the water level was high enough and safely returned to the launching ramp between the bridges. Ski had launched from Paramatta Bridge, moved to Titahi Bay and then had the failure. Ski was anchored but no local assist available. TAR engaged with master revalidation. Capability issue reviewed with the assessor and task undertaken. On scene advice given to try a restart but ski failed to operate. 1 POB from ski taken onto TAR and the ski with 1 POB assisted close to shore. • • Slipped anchor causes collision in Porirua Harbour

    • Operation Details Date/Time:  Tue, 05/02/2013 - 09:00 - 10:00 Operation Type:  CG Operation (good samaritan) People Assisted:  2 Total Volunteer Hours:  5 The Harbour Master requested the assistance of Coastguard Mana to help resolve a situation caused by severe southerly winds overnight.  A catamaran in Porirua Harbour had slipped its anchor and drifted into a trimaran moored nearby.  Both yatchs were caught together and the strong southerlies had caused the trimaran to puncture the cat above the water line. The owners were on board and declined assistance.     • Operation Details Date/Time:  Tue, 08/02/2011 - 21:00 - Wed, 09/02/2011 - 12:30 Operation Type:  SAROP Cat 1 People Assisted:  0 Police received a report of a boat seen drifting north from the Plimmerton area around Te Rewarewa Point (known locally as Tea Gardens) towards Pukerua Bay in heavy seas. The witness spotted the vessel from the top of the hill at Whiteraia Park and believed that it was drifting, possibly broken down. Coastguard Mana crew members were already in the area for their regular training night and responded in the rescue vessel Trust Porirua Rescue to search for the boat. • • Divers stranded in broken down vessel

    • Operation Details Date/Time:  Tue, 03/09/2013 - 17:55 - 20:30 Operation Type:  SAROP Cat 1 People Assisted:  3 Total Volunteer Hours:  12 A small vessel broke down near Mana Island with 3 people on board.The men had been diving about 1km off Mana Island, north of Porirua, and had been due back at 6pm. At 5pm they realised they had a fuel problem and were unable to start the motor so called emergency services who called out Coastguard Mana. They were able to alert rescuers to their location by text message and flashed a torch to Trust Porirua Rescue when near to show their location. The vessel and it's occupants were safely towed back to land by Coastguard Mana at 8:15pm. • • Return of standard Metlink fares for under 25s

    • Fare changes are coming soon for passengers aged 24 and under, following the government’s decision to withdraw funding for age-based concessions. From 1 May 2024, following the rollback of the former government’s age-based concessions on Metlink services: children aged 5 to 16, or older if still at secondary school, will pay half the adult fare, fares for people aged 17 to 24 will return to full price, unless they qualify for an alternative tertiary or Community Connect concession, under 5s will continue to travel for free on all services. Greater Wellington Transport committee chair Thomas Nash says the change will be felt by young people and whānau across the region, who are already struggling with the high cost of living. “I don’t want to end these concessions – we know they have made a big difference to people,” Cr Nash says.

• • P2 Men Vs Victoria 09/06/07

    • The Upper Hutt P2 mens team which has the largest squad in the past eight years found itself unusually short on Saturday - with only one sub. Still, Playing against Varsity, last years P2 winners, the team fought well. Victoria scored some very good goals (and luck seemed to be on thier side!). Upper hutt lost 5-1 in a game that could have been alot closer with us narrowly missing the goal on at least two occasions. Varstity broke away and scored very quickly on occasions but the general feeling amongst the team was that we dominated posession but unfortunately did not convert it into points. The jubilant celebrations from Varsity every time they scored was a tribute to the quality opposition they were up against. Goal was scored by someone who would like to remain anonymous (modest chap!) Murray

• • Abandoned crossing after southerly front rolls through early

    • Operation Details Date/Time:  Sat, 07/01/2023 - 07:30 - 10:15 Operation Type:  CG Operation (good samaritan) People Assisted:  2 Total Volunteer Hours:  19 2 people in a small 3.5m dinghy were caught out by a southerly front coming through sooner than expected whilst fishing. They made the decision to abandon the return leg from Mana Island and took shelter on the island, calling Coastguard for assistance. They left their vessel anchored just off shore and swam to the beach where they waited. We nosed up on the gravel beach and picked them up. After ensuring they were in good health and providing them blankets to warm up, we approached the vessel near rocks and hooked the anchor line, pulling it up and out to deeper water. • • Missing swimmer at Titahi Bay

    • Operation Details Date/Time:  Sat, 14/01/2012 - 16:00 - 20:30 Operation Type:  SAROP Cat 1 People Assisted:  1 Total Volunteer Hours:  40 Coastguard Mana was tasked to search for a missing swimmer at Titahi Bay after a group of swimmers were caught in a rip. Emergency services responded to reports of a group of four swimmers in trouble at about 4pm. Most of the group were rescued but one was still unaccounted for. CRV Trust Porirua Rescue has been searching in conjunction with Westpac Rescue and Titahi Bay Surf Lifesaving Club since 1700, while CRV Pelorus had to turn back due to severe sea conditions. TPR returned to base at 2030 and will resume the search early on Sunday morning.     • Operation Details Date/Time:  Sun, 16/02/2014 - 09:00 - 16:00 Operation Type:  Other People Assisted:  0 Total Volunteer Hours:  63 Coastguard Mana were invited to attend the Blessing of the Boats, which is part of the Island Bay Festival.  The “Blessing of the Boats” attracts crowds to the coastline to watch our decorated fishing boats put through their paces and blessed for safe carriage, and bountiful catches.  Unique to Island Bay, local and visiting Clergy venture out into the Bay to bless the fishing boats after they've circled around Tapu te Ranga Island.  So many boats and so much activity really makes this something special to see. There were approximately 30 boats there including both of our vessels, both of Coastguard Wellington's vessels and the Police boat Lady Elizabeth IV.     • Operation Details Date/Time:  Thu, 25/04/2013 - 10:00 - 13:00 Operation Type:  SAROP Cat 1 People Assisted:  3 Total Volunteer Hours:  30 CRV Trust Porirua Rescue and Pelorus responded to a Police callout for a dismasted yacht 2 miles south of Mana Island.The yacht had gear failure and the mast, boom and mainsail were hanging over the port side.Porirua Rescue passed bolt cutters to the yacht so they could cut away the rigging. On cutting away the rigging an attempt was made to marker buoy the gear with a buoy from Pelorus, this was unsucessful. Once the gear was freed from the yacht she made her own way under power to Mana Marina attended by Porirua Rescue and Pelorus. Conditions There was a strong crosswind blowing from the new clubrooms across the field to the North. There was the usual low-sun for this time of year to contend with for both teams. OBU played from right to left as we viewed from the clubrooms side. A couple of changes to the run-on team announced on the Club Rugby website. Taine Plumtree was out with a minor injury. Same Godwin gets a start. Josh Thomas, in his premier debut, was wearing the 22 Jersey and Tiaki Fabish switched to 21 pushing Matt Sleith to 20 (I think). Notable Performances Shamus can’t seem to keep his name off the scoresheet this season. Another 3 tries for him taking him to joint top of the try-scoring leader board in Wellington club rugby! Sam Reid had another solid game at centre and picked up a brace of tries. The Waimea wanderer, Caleb Delaney, notched a couple of tries and was a powerhouse around the field in the set-piece and loose play. Matt Fowler played a full match and claimed to be even more shattered than he looked at the end. Nevertheless, he was into everything from sniping runs around the phase plays to mighty defensive covering tackles. The whole front row was on fire especially with the ball in hand, Kenan Gillson taking the reward of a try on behalf of the engine room. Special mention for late replacement Sam Godwin who started in Taine’s place and got on the scoreboard early on with a well-taken try. A typically abrasive performance from Sam! How the Game Unfolded Minute What happened Score 1 Min OBU run it back strongly from the kickoff but get penalised for holding on 5 Mins OBU worked into the Avalon 22 but get penalised for offside in the backs. Avalon takes the quick tap and hit it up with one-off ball runners. But the OBU defence is strong and they don’t really go anywhere eventually knocking it on for an OBU scrum. 7 Mins Shamus takes it off the back of a solid scrum. There is some great inter-passing between the forwards and inside backs. Eventually, it is turned over and kicked out. 9 Mins From the lineout, it is taken up the middle. Reece crashes in through the centres. Avalon is penalised for offside. OBU elect to take the scrum. 10 Mins Shamus makes another strong run off the back of the scrum and is under extreme pressure but somehow manages to keep going forward. Avalon infringes at the ruck. 12 Mins Callum crashes over about 8m from the left-hand touch. The conversion just misses floating directly over the top of the right hand upright. Unlucky! OBU 5-0 18 Mins There is a series of pick and go’s at the try line by OBU. Eventually, Sam Godwin breaks the deadlock to score it near the sticks. Conversion is successful. OBU 12-0 23 Mins After 6 or so phases near the Avalon line, Shamus takes the ball back around to the left and scores it. Conversion is successful. OBU 19-0 29 Mins Some nice play by the OBU backs. Dale drops a little inside pass to Sam Reid who crashes over the top in the tackle to score. OBU 26-0 34 Mins Disallowed try after a foot in touch! It started from a great run inside the OBU 22. Olly got the pass from Reece to run it in, but out! 39 Mins There is a long-range try finished off by Shamus. Conversion misses. OBU 31-0 Halftime 41 Mins Starts off with OBU on a long period of attack with Avalon holding on well. Eventually, the pressure becomes too much and Shamus sneaks it in under the sticks. Conversion is successful. OBU 38-0 44 Mins There is a series of great offloads in the centre of the pitch has the Avalon defence at 6s and 7s. Ty Poe gets the try under the sticks. The conversion is successful. OBU 45-0 47 Mins OBU forwards mount a drive at the line which is then spun to the left. Sam Reid crashes over the line. Conversion is successful. OBU 52-0 48 Mins Josh Thomas takes the field along with Izzy Foai for his premier debut. Congratulations Josh. 55 Mins Kenan Gillson carries the ball strongly into the 22 and it is then recycled a few times from the ruck. Eventually, Kenan takes the reward for his endeavours to score in the corner. Dale lands a tough kick back upwind to register the conversion. OBU 59-0 56 Mins Fui, Kenan and Shamus are subbed off. 60 Mins Caleb Delaney gets a well-deserved try after the ball is moved into open spaces in the middle of the pitch OBU 66-0 65 Mins A few changes and a lapse in concentration allows Avalon to crash over in a pick and go on the OBU line. Conversion misses. OBU 66-5 70 Mins There is a lineout drive and OBU score the try. I couldn’t see who scored it but by subtraction, it must have been Caleb Delaney again(Waimea College forever)! The conversion was successful. OBU 73-5 79 Mins Reece juggles the pass initially but gets it off to Tiaki Fabish who scores it. The conversion was unsuccessful! That’s the final score!
