      • Orchestra Wellington presents RITE OF SPRING Two works that changed the course of musical history SATURDAY DECEMBER 2, 7:30PM MICHAEL FOWLER CENTRE, WELLINGTON Ludwig van Beethoven Symphony No 3 in E-flat Major, Op 55 “Eroica” Igor Stravinsky The Rite of Spring Marc Taddei, Conductor Orchestra Wellington’s 2017 season goes out with a bang, in a concert combining two of the greatest pieces of music ever written, conducted by music director Marc Taddei. First, Beethoven’s mighty Eroica Symphony features on Saturday 2nd December at the Michael Fowler Centre.  At the other end of the concert, the orchestra is performing the one work which can top Beethoven’s in terms of its impact, Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring. “I’m extraordinarily excited to present the defining works of the 19th and 20th century for our grand finale concert,” says conductor Marc Taddei. “Music would never be the same after the Eroica and The Rite of Spring. The sense of drive, power and rhythmic impulse connect these two monuments of Western civilisation.” Beethoven’s Eroica caused a sensation when it was first performed in 1803, a hundred years later, Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring started a riot. Beethoven demanded the orchestra play a series of discords so shocking to audiences, many of them thought he had gone mad. No longer was music just for aristocrats, or the church, with the Eroica symphony, Beethoven created something to take on the world. The crowning work of his triad of ballet masterpieces, Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring, about a girl chosen to dance herself to death in a pagan sacrifice, sounds as fresh now, as it did a century ago. Paris audiences knew to expect the unexpected from Diagilev’s Ballets Russes, but the Rite was beyond anything they had imagined. With exotically primitive melodies, irregular rhythms and brutal harmonies, the orchestra is pushed to its technical limits. And despite the modern rhythms and harmonies, audiences find Stravinky’s music irresistible. The tentative, questioning woodwind fragments that open the work, the brutal asymmetric stomping rhythms of the first dance, the deep, grinding harmonies that seemed to come from the earth itself, and the virtuosic sacrificial dance at the end: all combine to make a music more carnal, primitive and instinctive than any ballet before. Now the Rite of Spring is one of the most popular ballets ever, and always a sensation whenever it is performed. This is Orchestra Wellington’s biggest concert of the year, and it also marks the full launch of its 2018 season. This week was no exception. For extra spice, Tawa drew the ire of many in the rugby community by starting the player currently accused of assault in an incident outside the Poneke clubrooms late at night a few weeks ago. From an OBU perspective, the most important points were a solid defence that didn’t leak any tries and no serious injuries. Sam Reid has a minor injury concern but was thumbs up for the Avalon fixture this coming Saturday. Conditions It was an overcast day with with barely a breath of wind. This brought terror to those still petrified from Alfred Hitchcock’s movie, ‘The Birds’ as a tree on the clubrooms side of the field attracted thousands of twittering birds. Who knows if it interfered with the lineout calls. OBU was playing from right to left from the terraces side of the field in the first half. Or if you like back to the road and clubrooms end. Notable Performances Caleb Delaney had one of his best if not the best performances in the jersey. A towering presence in the lineout and involved in everything around the field. Similarly Morgan Poi had the best game I’ve seen him play for OBU proving a really difficult opponent for Tawa to stop. The partnership of Dale Sabbagh and Callum Harkin at first and second five is looking stronger every week both on attack and defence! Ty Poe continues to grow in the centre role. He may not be the size of some of the players he marks, but he proves that they still hit the ground hard if you use good technique. It seems like I repeat myself every week but Shamus was stellar at the back of the scrum, as was Kyle at 9 and Sam Reid playing at fullback this week. How the game unfolded Minute What happened Score 1 Min OBU win the kickoff and set to the right. Finally lost forward in the ensuing ruck. 4 Min OBU scrum on halfway, close side. the ball spins wide but goes in behind the backs. Well picked up and taken into contact. OBU penalised for holdng on. Kick to the corner by Tawa goes out in goal. 6 Mins Scrum to OBU, Shamus takes it down the blindside and recycled 10 m on. Kyle chips it over the top. Tawa gather and bring it back to the close side of the field. Sam Reid makes a good tackle and Shamus turns the ball over and kicks it long. 8 Mins OBU feed to the scrum. The backs take it right for one phase then back to the left. Tawa backs get caught offside. It’s not straightforward but is a kickable penalty. OBU successfully kick to the corner through Dale. The lineout throw is called not straight and scrum is set. OBU penalised for dropping the scrum. 16 Mins OBU penalised for side entry to the ruck. Tawa opt for the shot 38 metres out from the posts and just to the left. Penalty is successful! Tawa 3 OBU 0 18 Mins OBU knock on from the restart! 20 Mins OBU penalised for not releasing the tackled player. This starts a solid period on defence 5 meters out from the goal line. Eventually Tawa spill the ball on about the 6th or 7th pick and go. Somewhere in the middle of that Taine subs off for blood and Josh runs on to take his place (Caleb into lock, Josh on the blindside). Josh Gimblett Replaces Taine Plumtree (blood bin) 25 Mins OBU penalised for player going off their feet at the ruck. It’s about 35 meters out and in front of the posts. Kick at goal is successful. Tawa 6 OBU 0 27 Mins The kickoff goes out on the full. Taine and Josh trade places after Taine is cleaned up. Taine Plumtree replaces Josh Gimblett (blood bin) 33 Mins Tawa lineout on their 22 meter line. They clear the ball down to Sam Reid who runs it back strongly but is taken in a head high for his trouble. OBU elect to go for the shot 40 meters in front. Dale lands it. Tawa 6 OBU 3 39 Mins Tawa penalised for dropping the scrum 5 meters in from the near touch on halfway. OBU kick to the corner to take the lineout 5 meters out. Tawa are penalised for collapsing the ensuing maul. OBU go back to the lineout again. The lineout drive goes again with the backs piling in. The ref has a penalty advantage to OBU. there are several pick and go’s. The penalty is called and a quick tap is taken with a driver at the line. try to Taine. Successfully converted by Dale. OBU take 10-6 lead into the halftime oranges. Tawa 6 OBU 10 ———————————- 44 Mins OBU attacking the Tawa line are penalised for not releasing the tackled player. Someone offers an opinion and we are marched 10 meters. Ouch! Tawa elect to have a shot 45 meters out and to the right of the sticks. Tawa kicker lands a useful kick Tawa 9 OBU 10 46 Mins Tawa center makes a good break and looks to put his wing into space. Not sure if the pass wasn’t up to it or the wing didn’t get to where he needed to be, either way the ball rolls meekly into touch on the close side of the field. 48 Mins Tawa holding on in the tackle. OBU go for the posts about 42 meters out in front and slightly to the left. The discipline monster is back to upset proceedings for Tawa. The kick misses but the ref plays his joker and gives Dale another shot. I think it is due to a Tawa player trying to put Dale off by shouting something. No-one seems to know what the hand signal is for that! Dale makes no mistake on his second attempt. Tawa 9 OBU 13 50 Mins From the 10 meter line in Tawa territory Adam Clarke gets away an impossible pass to Sam Reid who boosts along the far touchline and scores it in the far corner. The referee and his assistant consult for a few seconds before the try is awarded. The difficult conversion is successful. Tawa 9 OBU 20 53 Mins Great kick from Dale down into Tawa corner. Tawa lineout. OBU backs are caught offside. Tawa clears to touch about halfway. An action replay takes Tawa into the 22. Morgan is issued a team warning. Tawa mounts an attack down the sideline and the Tawa fans are ecstatic but Kyle has taken care of the hooker who is in touch before the corner. Kurt Sickler on for Sam Reid (injury) 58 Mins Tawa concede a penalty on the 22 for backs offside. The referee issues another warning to both teams. Josh Gimblett on for Matt Sleith (tactical) Matt has had yet another busy day at the office. This time in the number 7 shirt after a few weeks in the front row. 63 Mins Tawa has a strong scrum which they drive off to the left. The OBU clean-out comes from the side and the ball is cleared out to the touch on halfway. 65 Mins OBU has a strong lineout drive to disrupt Tawa possession. Tawa’s experimental kick pass to the left wing doesn’t pay off as OBU is awarded a penalty possibly for in front of the kicker. Cleared down to 15 Meters out from Tawa line. 66 Mins Another powerful OBU lineout drive at the line with Shamus taking it over to keep his try tally marching on (2nd equal for Wellington premier rugby, 1 ahead of Sam Reid and 2 ahead of Ty Poe and Taine Plumtree!) OBU were under penalty advantage for collapsing again. Conversion successful. Substitutions – Luke Chisholm on for Fui at tighthead prop (tactical) Wirangi Parata on for Kenan Gillson at hooker (tactical) Great to see these two back in action after a few weeks off for injury. Tawa 9 OBU 27 75 Mins Matt Fowler on for Kyle Preston at halfback (tactical) Izzy Foai on for Adam Clarke (tactical). Clarky was on the wing but Izzy is usually a 2nd 5. I didn’t get much time to work out who moved to where but safe to say Izzy’s hard ball running was back on display nearer to the ruck than wing. Great to have him back! Josh  makes a great break from a lineout but the pass in the tackle goes into touch. 78 Mins Long period of OBU attacking the Tawa line. Tawa infringe and seeking the bonus point, OBU takes the lineout in the corner. 81 Mins From there an error leads to a Tawa scrum. they bravely try to run it out to salvage something from the game. Eventually they knock it on from some strong OBU defence. From the scrum OBU are penalised for not rolling away and after a few more phases the game is whistled to completion. All in all a well taken victory. OBU looked in control for most of the match while not ever looking completely dominant. That was probably the strongest scrummaging side of the season so far. We didn’t get the clear advantage we have usually enjoyed. That’s to Tawa’s credit. There were a lot of penalties, but to that we’d have to say there was a lot of infringing! Beloved Sisters – for the emotion and passion of two centuries prior.   Tom Beard REALITi: While NZ doesn’t have a stellar track record for science fiction movies, Chad Taylor and Jonathan King make an intriguing team that should bring dark, literate menace to this existential dystopian thriller. Particle Fever: Themes don’t come much bigger than the nature and fate of the universe, so this documentary about the Large Hadron Collider and the search for the Higgs boson should appeal to more than just physics junkies. Goodbye to Language 3D: Godard infamously said that “a film should have a beginning, a middle and an end but not necessarily in that order”. He continues to throw out the rules, not just for the 3D technology normally reserved for popcorn fodder, but for language itself. Tom Ackroyd Boyhood. Because of the idea of the lead aging from 6 to 18 over the course of the story, and because it’s a Richard Linklater picture. Hard to Be a God. Never heard of the director but the NZIFF write-up is irresistible. Under the Skin. Jonathan Glazer’s long-evolving back catalogue points to him eventually doing something extraordinary and I’m hoping this is it.   Runner-up:  Is the Man Who is Tall Happy? I’m a Michel Gondry nut. He can do no wrong. I actually have a crush on him. Sue Tyler The Tale of The Princess Kaguya – for what is film festival without a Studio Ghibli film National Gallery – behind the scenes at the national gallery, it looks like all the things i crave in a documentary The Lady from Shanghai - I love the old restored films that are brought back every year. I still remember the year Rear Window played at The Embassy and despite having seen that film on video many of times it blew my mind. Penguin survey Glenda Robb from the Kapiti Coast Biodiversity Project explained that they have received funding to do surveys on little blue penguins in Pukerua Bay. September to December is their nesting time. They use two methods: on sandy beaches, they look for footprints in the sand early in the morning; or they use a specially-trained dog to sniff them out (this is particularly good on non-sandy beaches). Leaflets will be circulated along Ocean Parade, Beach Road and Hanui Road in the next week. There is also a trapping programme along the beach to remove predators such as rats and stoats. The hope is that a large enough population will be found that a programme can be put in place to protect them and ideally increase their numbers over time. The survey will take place in the next few weeks (weather dependent). There are groups elsewhere in the country doing similar work to protect their local korora populations. Gillian pointed out that the dog walking area on the beach is right by where there are penguin nests. Glenda suggested it may be worth lobbying PCC to make it a dog-free area, though it is difficult to get such a status. It was noted that there is still an ongoing problem of enforcement, which is not helped by the fact that there are no signs on the beach asking people to keep dogs on the leash. Action: Iain to contact Brent Tandy at DOC re signage.Action: Glenda to circulate link to a webcam in a nesting box in Paekakariki.Action: Committee to circulate flyers to other parts of the village in October with the AGM notices. Porirua City Council update Nathan explained that the District Plan was activated and is now available for people to feed back on by 20 November. PCC is approaching each Residents Association in the city to invite responses. Josh is on the Climate Change working group, which is looking at updating their terms of reference. The group currently has representatives from each of the GWRC councils plus Mana Whenua. Two big changes are being proposed: bringing in an accountability mechanism to ensure action and follow through; and providing capacity to have Mana Whenua representatives from all six iwi in the region. He noted that PCC is also starting to organise workshops for consultation on the Long Term Plan. Wellington Regional Emergency Management Office (WREMO) Whetu Bennett is the WREMO community resilience adviser in Porirua. He congratulated Pukerua Bay for our village’s response to the Covid-19 lockdown. Whetu focuses on high priority areas in the city (Whitby and Waitangirua) but is available to answer questions and provide support. He can run workshops on planning and preparing for emergencies, as well as earthquake drills. He helps PCC identify areas that they can assist with, and currently he is looking to find a location in Pukerua Bay for a new 25,000 litre water tank. There are already community water tanks at the school and the library. In case of a civil emergency, the local WREMO operations centre is in Elsdon. Emergency Assistance Centres provide support such as a nurse and social worker. However, it is likely to take at least eight days to get those set up. In the meantime, Pukerua Bay would need to be self-sufficient. Kate explained that there is a need to refresh the Civil Defence plan for the village. Whetu is happy to work with a local team to update it and also to help run a workshop to introduce residents to the updated plan. Projects update Muri Platform building The updated lease is sitting in the Kiwirail office in Wellington Station and can’t be accessed until we move into Level 1 lockdown. The opening went well. However, some work is still required to fit the panels accurately. The event was led by representatives from Ngāti Toa who did a significant blessing of the community garden as well as the building. Thanks to Jane Comben for the design work and to Ted Coates for mowing and tidying up along the platform. The community garden group offered hot drinks and sausages, and there was also storytelling. The hope is to still get some funding from PCC for the survey, but the timing for launching the survey will be delayed. Meeting ended: 9.54pmNext meeting: 13 October 2020 Appendix: Village Planning update from PCC He Are Pukerua The uncovering of the latest heritage panels last Saturday at the former Muri Station Southbound was a great time for celebrating and sharing the history of railways in Pukerua Bay. The research and writing the team has undertaken (especially Ashley and Margaret Blair) is an outstanding commitment to bring this heritage to the community. The final installation within the available remaining village planning budget for this project will be the wide format heritage station along Centennial Highway, celebrating the construction of the road. The structure is now in place and just needs the panels fixed to the frame later in the year. Ara Harakeke shared pathway extension After the success of widening the footpath from the shops to the overbridge, NZTA have asked if PCC could consider widening the section from Haunui Road to SH1 near Ted Coates’ house with 100% funding. PCC’s construction partner Mills & Albert are currently costing the proposal. When the costed proposal has been received, it has to be submitted to NZTA for their internal processes to evaluate and decide if it is a suitable project for funding. PCC will let us know when the costing is submitted. Community food forest It was great to see the renovations now underway again following the COVID 19 lockdown on the former northbound Muri Station building. Please keep all receipts for the materials, as they need to be submitted to Council before 31December for accounting purposes. Pukerua Bay community hub initiatives This project – which focuses on creating opportunities for community connections – has an operational budget allocation of $4,750 to support initial research and a local programme of activities. PCC are looking forward to working on this initiative in a way that aligns with broader village planning objectives.

IYNT Winners, Minsk, 2019 WHS students Ryan Bright and Lydia Acton were part of the winning NZ team at the 2019 International Young Naturalists’ Tournament. Lydia was the team captain, having also competed in the 2018 tournament in Tbilisi, Georgia. Ryan reported his solution to problem 7, “Burning Glass” in the final against Croatia and Switzerland. He scored the highest score in the final, which was won by NZ with 47.9 points, to Croatia’s 45.9 and Switzerland’s 45.6.          The team’s achievements have been widely recognised, including this tweet from the National Science advisor! Sports Underwater Hockey HUGE congratulations go out to all our Underwater Hockey teams for their fantastic season this year.  Our Junior Open A team won bronze medals in Friday night’s CSW Premier finals, defeating Hutt Valley High School 6-2 in their playoff game. The boys were hoping for better after entering the playoffs in second place, however they suffered a shock 3-0 loss to Scots College in their semi final. The bronze medal is still a massive achievement, and the first medal won by a WHS team for as long as Murray Chisholm can remember. This team and our Senior Girls team will contest the national championships in Wellington at WRAC from September 6th-8th. WHS may have lost the game 3 – 0 but it was an evenly matched contest and our team benefited from the opportunity to take on Tararua College.

Harrison Tew® will run specialised training with senior management, our staff and students in the lead up to a lock down exercise, which will occur on Monday 9 April.  The exercise will be as real-life as possible, which will mean that parents/families will receive notification by way of text, WHS app and/or email.  The information passed will emphasise that this is an exercise/practice and will explain that all updated information will then be posted on the school website. In a genuine incident, should you hear of a lock down at the school, can we please ask that you do not attend the school or phone, as we will not be able to respond.  Your presence at, or contact with the school may make it more difficult for us to manage the situation, and could potentially & place your children and in fact yourselves at risk.  What you need to do now Prior to this exercise, please check that your contact details (mobile phone numbers and email & addresses) are current. This will be the information we use to reach you should an emergency occur at the school.       • Mayoral candidate Jack Yan believes his policies on creativity and innovation are needed more than ever in light of the recent Fonterra disaster and has released a statement and a new video (speaking in English, te Reo, French and Cantonese, no sign language sadly) highlighting the need for the next mayor to be able to bridge cultures at a global level: Wellington’s innovation can be a safety net when Fonterra-level scares hit If mayors aren’t part of this dialogue, talking to the top 40 cities in the world and opening doors for our exporters, then we’re going to be affected terribly when our nation brand is damaged,’ he says. ‘We have seen real evidence of this week.’ ‘In the meantime, Wellington is the home of companies like Weta and Xero, along with numerous independents¬ has a reputation that can stand head and shoulders above this scandal.’ Mr Yan, who issued his manifesto for the Wellington mayoral election in April, months before his opponents, has remained on message throughout about the need for Wellington to become a global hub for innovation and identifying export champions. Given Wellington’s urban base, those champions were likely to be outside the primary industries. ‘New Zealand is a primary products’ nation and I recognize the sector’s importance. However, this scare shows just why it’s important for cities to back up national economic activity and to have strong brands themselves.’ ‘Wellington is in an enviable place to deliver greater innovation, with high-growth firms and strong creativity, which will be more rigorously grown if I am elected,’ he says. Mr Yan has authored books on branding and has practised in the area since the 1980s. His work at the Swedish branding think-tank, the Medinge Group, has seen him lead the way on international brand thinking, making him better equipped to develop a proper city brand, get Wellington businesses exporting, and being an advocate for them globally. He agrees with earlier commentators, including Prime Minister John Key, that the scare has harmed New Zealand’s national brand. As he predicted in his 2010 and 2013 campaigns, strong city brands will have to come to the fore to promote economic activity in export markets. Mr Yan says, ‘There is a certain level of pride in saying something comes from Wellington, but we haven’t recognized this properly. We have export earners here and by promoting a diverse economy, we can ensure that we have more of a safety net when scandals in our primary sector occur. ‘I have long been concerned since the days of the “New Zealand Way” brand in the 1990s that we were missing the mark on promoting our nation. Even then, I was outspoken on saying that the likes of Karen Walker and Tait were being excluded. Yet Kiwi innovation is unique: it comes from a sense of isolation and independence,’ he recalls. ‘We have export markets criticizing our “100 Per Cent Pure” campaign again.       • News Cecily McNeill September 2013 One parishioner in the tiny town of Ward near the epicentre of last month’s 6.6 earthquake is planning to teach her grandchildren about their guardian angels because she says someone was certainly looking after them. Mary Hickman who, with husband Ossie, and their three sons form the nucleus with the West family of the parish in Ward, says they are all counting their blessings. Her husband, who is disabled, was lying on the bed alone in their brick house when the quake struck at 2.31pm on Friday 16 August. He said it was like being in a very violent storm at sea. ‘Things were ‘flying off the walls’ during the violent and prolonged shaking ‘but he wasn’t hit,’ she said. When the shaking stopped he managed to get himself into the nearby sitting room to wait for one of the sons to help him to safety. All the families gathered away from the houses and power lines until the first of the numerous aftershocks had subsided and one of Mary’s sons, whose wooden house needs its chimney demolished, has moved his family with four children to temporary accommodation in Blenheim. She and Ossie moved to a motel. Another branch of the family most of whom farm between Grassmere and Ward have sustained ‘massive damage’. ‘One of their homes, a brick house, is red-stickered (uninhabitable).’ Mary says the experience has been numbing. ‘You know you have to manage but it’s one day at a time.’ And as for those guardian angels, ‘it’s a good opportunity to learn that God has special people he sends to take care of us’, says Mary. Meanwhile, the quake has also rendered the town’s Catholic Church unsafe. The top third of the bricks on the steeple of the church, which celebrated 75 years recently, have loosened. The tower is over the entrance to the church. Scientists say last month’s quakes came from a fault line lying under Lake Grassmere about 40 kilometres south of Blenheim whereas the July shocks were centred more in Cook Strait. The more than 3,500 aftershocks since the 5.7 on 19 July have given seismologists a clearer idea of the larger fault system, the Dominion Post reported on 20 August. It appears seismic activity is moving away from Wellington. GNS geoscientist Bill Fry said it was more important to think in terms of a seismic network. ‘There are a lot of faults in the upper South Island that could potentially give rise to earthquakes,’ he told the Dominion Post. And the archdiocese is still awaiting confirmation of the extent of minor damage to others of its buildings in the wider region. Structural engineers have inspected the Catholic Centre and other archdiocesan workplaces and say the damage appears from initial assessment to be cosmetic. Director of Archdiocesan Support Services David Mullin is asking parishes to look for any signs of damage  to assess the need for an engineer's inspection. These earthquakes are a timely reminder of the need to do what we can to improve the strength of buildings for people’s safety and confidence.

    • Rare fern rediscovered.
      • I&#8217;m one of the Botany Curators at Te Papa, and ferns are one of my specialties.  New Zealand has about 200 native ferns, and some of them are very rare.  We recently rediscovered one rare fern that had been &#8216;lost&#8217;.  I was beginning to wonder if it had become extinct, but fortunately it has not.  Still, the known total of individuals is still only 9, and this population is only a goat-lunch away from extinction! Me, on top of the Ruahine Ranges. No rare ferns sighted up here, but interesting nonetheless. The rediscovered fern is a maidenhair spleenwort.  It had been definitively identified from just three New Zealand sites, all in Hawke&#8217;s Bay, and all dating to the 1950&#8217;s.  The localities of these three sites were not precisely recorded, and no one I talked to knew of a living population.   I enlisted the help of the Manawatu Botanical Society to search one of these sites (the most precise one, which involved searching several square km rather than several tens of square km).  I wasn&#8217;t very optimistic, given the amount of time since it had been previously collected and that I had already looked at a number of similar Hawke&#8217;s Bay sites.  But, we found it - 9 plants in one very small area.  There is another maidenhair spleenwort in NZ, and it is quite common.  These two maidenhair spleenworts look similar, but they have different chromosome numbers; the common one has six sets of chromosomes while the rare one has four sets.  This kind of difference is usually treated at the subspecies or even species level in ferns.   Unfortunately, the present taxonomy, or formal scientific naming, for these ferns is not adequate.  We hope to sort this out in the next year or so.  They have both been called Asplenium trichomanes, but this fern does not occur in NZ (at least when interpreted in a narrow sense).  The rare maidenhair spleenwort in NZ has also been called Asplenium trichomanes subsp. quadrivalens; whether this is correct remains to be established. Maidenhair spleenwort. This is the rare species, but the common one looks very similar. The two maidenhair spleenworts usually occur on or near limestone.  They can be distinguished from all other ferns in NZ by their undivided, black, almost smooth stems, and by having their reproductive structures in lines away from the margins of the undersides of their leaves.  This particular arrangement of the reproductive structures characteristics all of the spleenwort (Asplenium) species, of which there are about 20 in NZ (and some 600 in the world). I&#8217;d be interested in learning of additional maidenhair spleenwort sites in Hawke&#8217;s Bay.  Both species of maidenhair spleenwort have been recorded from the Hawke&#8217;s Bay, so any new finds may be the rare or the common species.  I would need to closely inspect them to be sure.  But, please, do not remove them from the wild!  Email (leonp@tepapa.govt.nz) or phone (04 381 7261) me the locality details. On Sunday 4 May, we held our Course Planning Seminar, which was a resounding success! About 12 people came along and we were thrilled to see such strong participation from experienced orienteers and those newer to the sport. The seminar provided valuable insights into course design and use of Condes software that is used for mapping orienteering courses. A huge thank you to Dick Dinsdale for arranging this as well as our contingent of helpers, and all who attended! This seminar not only strengthened our collective knowledge but also helped build a more connected and engaged community. We’re already planning future educational events to continue this momentum. I encourage all of you to keep the conversation going and apply what you've learned at our upcoming events. Throughout May and June, there are plenty of exciting opportunities to get outdoors, improve your skills, and continue to challenge yourself. North Island Secondary Schools Champs This year’s North Island Secondary Schools Champs was hosted by Counties Manukau Orienteering Club. Congratulations to Orienteering Wellington members Troy Thompson, Morag McLellan and Jake McLellan, who came second in the Year 12-13 Senior Boys relay. Morag McLellan also came fourth in Year 12-13 Senior Girls long distance champs, and fifth in the sprint. Supporting our members Orienteering Wellington has awarded a $750 travel grant to club members selected to represent New Zealand internationally at International Orienteering Federation events. Rachel Baker and Jake McLellan will be representing New Zealand at the Junior World Orienteering Champs in Trentino, Italy, from June 26 to July 3, 2025, as has Morag McLellan at Brno, Czechia, from 17 – 20 July. Lizzie Ingham has been selected for the team attending the World Orienteering Champs in Kuopio, Finland, from 8 – 12 July. Jake McLellan, World-Class Orienteer and Mountain Man Orienteering Wellington member Jake McLellan won the fabled Tararua Mountain Race – Southern Crossing, a 36km mountain run from Kaitoke to Ōtaki Forks. It was an epic effort that saw Jake crossing the finish line in 7:08:08. Jake says: “The race kicked off fast, and I couldn’t stick with the early pace, so I settled into my own rhythm and made sure to save some gas for the back half. Just after Alpha Hut, I spotted the leaders a couple of minutes ahead — that gave me a real boost and helped me keep pushing across the tops. I made goodtime across the tops and caught up to Chester at Kime Hut. After Bridge Peak, I put the hammer down on the technical descent and managed to pull away. From there, it was just a fast hobble down from Field Hut to the finish. “I'm absolutely stoked to take the win at such an iconic event! It's an honour to have my name on the trophy alongside some legends of the sport.” Tips and Tricks To help you improve your orienteering skills this winter, here are a few tips from our experienced members: Stay on the trail: In challenging conditions, it’s often easier to follow a trail, path, or prominent feature rather than trying to cross open terrain. It will save you time and help you maintain orientation. Map reading in low visibility: If you're out in low-light conditions, try marking key features(like water bodies or trails) on your map before starting. This will help you stay oriented even when visibility is reduced. Check your compass often: Don’t rely on your compass just once at the start. Check it regularly to ensure you’re staying on course. Small errors in direction can add up to big detours! Practise regularly: Winter orienteering training doesn’t have to be outdoors. Use mapsin your local area to practice route planning, compass work, and even map-reading skills indoors. Familiarity with your map will pay off in the field. Development and events There’s a lot happening in the coming months. This Sunday sees us at Baring Head, followed by another event at Battle Hill on Sunday 8 June. Pre-registration is greatly appreciated. Advanced entries close 11.59pm Saturday. We’re offering a practical training session at Karori Park on Sunday 15 June. You’ll get a chance to put your newfound skills to the test at Matariki, in the pine forest and sand dunes of Waikawa, north of Ōtaki. Further afield is the three-day King’s Birthday event in the Hawkes Bay. Entries close Thursday. Orienteering Bay of Plenty’s Great Forest Rogaine in Rotorua is coming up on Saturday 26 July 2025 – a fun, team navigation challenge where you try to collect as many controls as you can in the time allowed. There are 3- and 6-hourevents that you can do on foot or mountain bike. It’s a great adventure for groups of friends and family. Entries close Tuesday 22 July.     • Social Justice Week 2013: Unemployment – the local face of a global concern
      • Social Justice Week, 8-14 September, 2013 September 2013 Unemployment affects everyone, particularly young people whose ability to find work has been hindered by the loss of jobs after the 2009 economic recession. Four years on, youth unemployment remains high throughout the world. In New Zealand, 75,000 Kiwis agead 15-24 are not in employment, education or training. For young people on the margins, the repercussions of long-term unemployment can be scarring. Each year New Zealand’s Catholic Bishops use Social Justice Week to consider Catholic social teaching on a specific social justice issue relevant to our society. This year the focus for 8 to 14 September is on ‘meaningful work for the young worker’. Caritas Aotearoa New Zealand has provided resources for Catholic parishes, schools and the wider community. The core booklet Walk Alongside: Meaningful work for the young worker helps us to consider what it is like to be a young worker today and the difficulties young people face as they look for stable work. The bishops also challenge individuals and communities to consider how they can accompany or ‘walk alongside’ the young people around them. Other resources include posters, prayer cards and liturgical resources, as well as a special website on the issue. Now more than ever, young people need the encouragement of their wider community and of the church. The local face of a global concern On his way to World Youth Day last month, Pope Francis talked with journalists about his concern for the impact of the economic recession on young unemployed people. In New Zealand, one in six young people looking for work cannot find a job. This is a concern for the whole community. Work that is meaningful enhances human dignity. It gives people enough to live on and leads to lifelong, secure employment. New Zealand’s labour market has been slow to recover from the economic recession and the number of jobs available is still below pre-recession levels. Young people are often at the end of long job queues. New entry jobs for young graduates are few. A baby blip in the early 1990s means there are now 42,000 more people aged 20 to 25 entering the labour force than five years ago. Fact – 42 percent of all casual workers are aged 15 to 24. Young people tend to work in casual employment with no fixed hours or job security. These jobs tend to be the first to go in times of financial hardship. Many tertiary graduates are struggling to find work in their field of study. In 2012, the Ministry of Education told Victoria University primary teaching students that only a fifth of graduates would find work within a year of graduating. A recent graduate, Nicole Jenness, has applied for more than 60 teaching roles and, after 10 months of searching, has yet to find a teaching job. Pope Francis has said, ‘We have all become accustomed to this disposable culture... With all the young people out of work, even they are affected by a culture in which everything is disposable.’ Government responses such as the Starting-Out Wage and the 90-day probationary period continue to reinforce a disposable culture where young people may be seen as a source of cheap labour and deprived of a just wage. Economic recessions come and go, but the impact of insecure work and unemployment on young people and our community can be long lasting. For young people on the margins, job insecurity and unemployment further pushes them towards disengagement because they miss out on a sense of belonging in society. Reflecting the sentiment of Pope Francis we, as a community, are called to walk together towards a culture of inclusion where the skills and contribution of everyone can be recognised and realised.

      • <figure class=" sqs-block-image-figure intrinsic " > From Thursday 9 September the Hataitai Centre and Community House Playroom will be open for our regular hirers and one off. The main Community House room and office will reopen on Monday 13 September. From Thursday we will have QR codes at each gate to the Village Green - for use when passing through, using the community garden and compost bins, or running your kids or dogs on the Green. As the Waipapa Road playground is a shared space with our Playgroups, and hirers, we will also put up QR codes for the playground. Following are guidelines for Delta Level 2 when using our buildings as a one-off hirer, or attendee to a function, class or group. Sign in All hirers / hosts must sign in and are responsible for ensuring all attendees of their event / class sign in. We will provide a sign in box for those that do not have the app.  The Village Green is also considered a public space and will have its own QR code. Please ensure all parties are aware to scan in if they are using the green or passing through Face Coverings When you are leaving your home at Alert Level 2 you legally must wear a face covering when: using public transport, airplanes (including in arrival and departure points such as train stations and bus stops) and in a taxi or ride-share vehicle visiting a healthcare or aged care facility inside retail businesses, such as supermarkets, pharmacies, shopping malls, indoor marketplaces, takeaway food stores, and public venues, such as museums and libraries visiting the public areas within courts and tribunals, local and central Government agencies, and social service providers with customer service counters. As such we ask that all hirers abide by guidelines below;  Public class / event;  All hirers / hosts/ customer facing people must wear a face covering at all times. You are asked to advise all attendees of your event / class to wear a face covering wherever possible, except when exercising.  Children under 12 are encouraged to wear a mask, but it is not mandatory. If you’re using the building for exercise, please ensure you wear a mask while moving about, but once you have your ‘spot’ you can remove your mask.  Please put it back on when you’ve finished class before vacating. We will mark out 2m distances on the floor for a visual guide. Private event;  We encourage all attendees to wear a face covering wherever possible, especially if it is hard to maintain physical distance from others.  In general, face coverings should be worn whenever you can. The Delta variant is more transmissible by droplets, so face coverings are a way we can protect ourselves and each other. For more info - https://covid19.govt.nz/activities/private-social-gatherings/#social-gatherings-at-alert-level-2 What else we need to do at Alert Level 2 to stay safe Hand sanitising is compulsory on entrance and exit, and sanitiser will be providedYou must maintain a distance of 2 meters from people you do not know and 1m from people you do know, you must also manage this guideline for your attendees.  If distancing is difficult, it is mandatory to wear a mask. 50 people maximum are allowed over the whole Hataitai Centre- upstairs and downstairs. The Community House is a much smaller space, so please bear in mind this number will need reducing to provide adequate distance required for everyone's safety. If you are providing food and drinks at an event, everyone must be seated to be served.  All high touch surfaces need to be cleaned after use - door handles on both sides of the building entrance door and toilet door, tables and counter tops used.  Cleaning equipment will be provided. We will also be arranging additional regular cleaning throughout Level 2.  Do not host your event / class if you have cold or flu symptoms or you have been asked to isolate.  Please ask those who attend your event / class not to come along if they have cold or flu symptoms or you have been asked to isolate. If you have any reason to believe that you or anyone who attended your class/event has developed covid please let us know as soon as possible so we can discuss next steps and take necessary precautions.  Remember; If you are feeling unwell, stay home and call Healthline or your doctor for advice.  Even if you have been vaccinated against COVID-19, you should still stay home if you are feeling unwell. Staying home will help protect you, your whānau, friends and community.

    • Sporting students staying motivated during Lockdown
      • What does the lockdown mean for sporting students? How has it affected them and what are they doing to stay fit and motivated? Two students who were preparing to compete about now were Queen Margaret College’s Mollie Nicol, who has just recently made the Long List for the New Zealand Junior Rowing Team, and Wellington Girls’ College Sports Captain and National 800m champion Emma Douglass, who was recently in top form at the Regional Athletics meeting. We put a few questions to each below. Emma Douglass crossing the finish line at Nationals College Sport Wellington: Please tell us what you were preparing for before the Lockdown? Mollie: I was involved with rowing at QMC and we have been training since September last year till mid-march when we found out that due to corona virus that our Maadi Cup Nationals would not continue. We were only two weeks away until we were heading down south to Twizel to compete. Emma: I was training for the final months of the track season. I was due to go over to Australia in March and also California in April to compete and finish my season. Both of these were cancelled prior. CSW: what you are doing to keep fit and train? Mollie: Once school was cleared, I was able to get an erg from school and take it home so I am able to do some ergs. My dad loves to run so my sister, him and I like to go for runs around the neighbourhood. Before the lockdown, we already had a small gym in our garage that included weights and an exercise bike. There are plenty of options for me to keep fit. Emma: Currently, I am going on runs, changing what distance/ terrain/ pace. Along with that, I have set up my wind trainer so I can bike at home. My gym is also doing online sessions which I am doing twice a week CSW: Please share a lockdown sports practice or training tip for your school mates and others out there in the same situation? Mollie: Something that has helped me during the last week was to get into a routine. I know that it is the holidays but I find it easier getting up earlier and getting it done. In the mornings it is better to do something more challenging as you are fresh and then your afternoon session could be hard or something not as hard but you will still gain from it. Emma: I would recommend that people try to just keep your routine and training schedule as normal a possible. This means your body doesn’t get shocked by an increase or decrease in training. For example, if you train every day, try to do something every day to mimic this. This will also keep you fit throughout the lockdown. CSW: Are you in contact with your sporting friends about the above and are you motivating each other remotely? Mollie: Yes I have been in contact with my friends and teammates and they have asked for some training programmes as they are stuck on what to do. Emma: I mostly train alone but for my training where I’m usually with someone I try to keep in touch to stay motivated. I will also track all the workouts I do on my watch so I can account for everything I am doing. After the successful and fun afterwork series—and before you check out for the holidays—we are putting on a training session focussing on compass skills. The training will occur on Kaukau, at 6—7pm Wednesday, 17 December. Our session is aimed at those wanting to learn new skills and techniques, or those with more experience who want to practise their techniques, and is suitable for every ability (kids and adults welcome!). Bring your compass and clothes suitable for the weather, as it can be exposed on the tops. No dogs are allowed on the farmland. The Endeavour Cup is awarded for development and performance, and the Fortune Cup is awarded for outstanding service to the club. Endeavour Cup Rachel Baker received this year’s Endeavour Cup for her outstanding performances including as part of the New Zealand team at this year’s Junior World Orienteering Championships in Italy. Other nominees were Morag McLellan and Jake McLellan. Fortune Cup Alan Horn received the Fortune Cup. Alan unfailingly provides outstanding support for events, gear, and controlling and planning. Other nominees were Paul Teesdale-Spittle, Helen Hughes, Lachlan McKenzie and Will Vale. Members’ League We will be trialling a members’ league in 2026—a way to introduce some fun competition into events where scores are based on comparative performance, rather than absolute as per race time. Details are being worked through but generally will look like this: For members age 16 or over who run a Red-level course CSWs and OYs will be ‘counting events’ Scores will be allocated based on the formula “Average km rate * (age and gender weighting)” Overall winner: If there are 10 ‘counting events’, we will take your top 6 scores. Our Year 9 cohort is the largest in many years with the roll nearing 1300 for the first time since I joined WHS. It is fantastic to see the community embracing coeducation at secondary level. Your increased support is an endorsement that a school should be a reflection of the society we live in. The increased roll places some pressures on us all, not least with some larger junior classes, and it is satisfying to see students settled well into the new academic year. At the start of the year, we acquaint/reacquaint ourselves with WHS’s cornerstone priorities based around the māori word WERO. WERO means ‘challenge’. Its letters represent our core strategic priorities. W is for Whānau. Education is a partnership between the school and family. We have the greatest success when we are all working together. When we speak of whānau we mean this in the broadest community sense: we are looking after all of our students to ensure everyone is given a fair, even chance of success and that no one is left behind. E represents Excellence. Excellence is not confined to academic achievement but represents everyone giving their best and achieving to their own personal level of excellence. Excellence is not confined to academic areas and includes sporting, cultural, social and personal excellence. R is for Respect. Respectful relationships should be at the core of everything we do and want our young people to acquire. R can also represent relational teaching practice and how this shows the importance of good relationships. And R can represent restorative practice because when things go wrong it is important to try and repair harm that may have been caused. O stands for Ora representing physical and emotional wellbeing. We all need quality of life and we need to actively take steps to look after ourselves and others. When I think of Ora I think of the airline safety videos that talk about looking after ourselves first before helping others when the oxygen mask drops down from overhead. It is the same with Ora. We need to look after our own wellbeing to be in a position to look after others. On 14 February our WERO leaders and DP Megan Southwell, ran ‘Aroha Day’: an opportunity for students to find out about sporting and cultural activities and sign up to something that interested them. It was great to see students signing up for so many opportunities enthusiastically. I hope that these initial commitments turn into enjoyable and rewarding experiences throughout the year. As you read this, our students will have just be finishing competing in our annual Athletics Day. I hope this provides a positive fun day for all of those who compete and helps to engender a stronger sense of pride in our great school. You will be able to read about the event in next week’s Wrap Up. On Friday 29 March we will run our first learning conversations for the year. The emphasis will be on how students can gain the requisite learning competencies to build success. These key competencies are an important part of our NZ curriculum and are: thinking; using language, symbols and text; managing self; relating to others; and participating and contributing. They all contribute to how a student prepares for and engages in learning. Through the media you may have heard that a student strike in support of a worldwide day of action over global warming is planned for Friday 15 March. Some of our students have expressed an interest in attending and publicity material has been circulating at school and online. The action is a global initiative expected to bring thousands of students onto the streets worldwide. In Wellington students will be meeting in Civic Square at 10am and marching to Parliament. We anticipate that students who participate will be out of school for the day. If your young person wants to support this action please notify us as soon as possible. Although the school supports students who wish to use this day to take this action, we do not support those that may use this issue as an excuse for a day off with no intention of being involved in the positive action being planned. Ngā mihi nui Dominic Killalea Important Information Thank you to the WF Anderson Educational Foundation Wellington High School has received a grant of $5000 from the WF Anderson Educational Foundation. Board Elections  | A message from the Wellington High School Board of Trustees 2019 is an election year for school trustees.  We understand that asking people to put their hand up and stand for election is difficult, especially if parents aren’t really clear on what the role entails! Find out about becoming a trustee New Zealand School Trustees Association are offering a new programme, Kōrari, which is designed to recognise the experience of existing trustees and help to encourage potential new trustees to come and find out what it really means to serve on a school board. People who want to understand what school governance looks like can come along and find out more. A hui will be facilitated by a regional adviser from NZSTA who will talk about the reality of being a trustee, the support and training that is available and encourage existing trustees to tell their story. On Monday this week, teachers from our Kāhui Ako/Community of Learning schools gathered together for the first time. Wellington High is part of a Ministry-funded collective with seven of its feeder schools (SWIS, Brooklyn School, Owhiro Bay, Island Bay, Newtown Primary, Houghton Valley, and Ridgway School). We are committed to working closely together around challenges related to wellbeing, cultural identity and capabilities for lifelong learning. The staff met, talked and shared their first thoughts about the direction and potential outcomes of our collective. It was great for staff to begin to ‘reach across’ to connect with colleagues in other local schools. The next step is to complete and submit our action plan to the Ministry of Education for approval.   John Minto visits WHS As part of the Thursday Library lunchtime lecture series for 2019, John Minto spoke to a group of WHS staff and students on Thursday. For the past 72 days the veteran activist has been walking the length of the North Island, partly to fulfil a personal ambition but also to advocate for Human Rights equality for Palestinians in Israel. John spoke thoughtfully, starting with the aims of his Te Araroa walk and gave the floor to students and staff to ask questions and extend their own understanding about activism, issues in the Middle East and his own actions during the SpringBok Tour. In a session that looked at both sides of the debate, John responded to the audience’s desire to better understand the complex and politically divisive struggles between Israel and Palestine.   Earth and Space Science students visit Island Bay Earth and Space Science NCEA level 2 students enjoyed a beautiful afternoon carrying out field work at Island Bay and Princess Bay. They practised sketching, photographing and observing the rock formations. Students learned how the rocks were formed as layers of sand 200 million years ago which became buried under an ocean that was maybe 2 km deep. Within the sedimentary rock a volcano left a layer of basalt that is now visible just east of the Bait shed as purple/red rock.  At Princess Bay there are traces of the sea creatures that lived on the ocean floor.   Overseas exchange scholarship information evening Is your student interested in spending a semester overseas? Achievements WHS students Eli Martin (Year 11) and John Shea (Year 12) took place in the first round of NZOI (New Zealand Olympiad in Informatics) last weekend. 70 students, of all ages, and from across the country took part. Congratulations to Eli, who placed 18th, and John, who placed 11th.

By Keith Johnson While road transport increasingly grinds to a halt in Wellington and road rage is becoming common, partly consequent on Wellington City Council’s dog-in-the-manger approach to investment in roads, the Bigger is Better philosophy is receiving ringing endorsement from local authorities with respect to the aviation and maritime shipping industries. Much has been published on this website about Wellington International Airport’s Runway Extension Project – including an article by Dr Sea Rotmann which draws attention to the massive contribution of air travel worldwide to CO2 emissions. Maritime transport is also a major emitter. In this respect, Wellington Regional Council should be insisting upon a proper Multi-Criteria Assessment of the proposed dredging of Wellington Harbour by CentrePort. http://www.stuff.co.nz/business/industries/79692673/CentrePort-reveals-details-of-plans-to-dredge-7km-channel-in-Wellington-Harbour A Multi-Criteria Assessment would cover all dimensions of a major public investment: Cost-Benefit Analysis [including the Business Case] Economic Impacts Environmental and Safety Impacts Social and Distributional Impacts With the whole to be concluded with an over-arching summary of redlines and trade-offs. Looking at the current situation, the parallels between the CentrePort proposal and the Runway Extension Project are very interesting: Doubts about financial viability Optimistic multiplier-based ‘economic’ rather than business case justification Concern over who will eventually pay [ferry customers, GWC ratepayers] etc. Environmental concerns The one glaring difference is that Wellington ratepayers are not being asked to pay directly in the case of the Port. These consents would provide CentrePort the flexibility to dredge in one stage or a series of stages, allowing the port to deepen the channel only as required, in response to the size of ships actually visiting New Zealand. An extensive optimisation exercise was undertaken to identify the most cost effective design delivering the least amount of dredging for the best operational outcome. As Wellington is a naturally deep harbour, no deepening is required in the main harbour basin and the overall volume proposed to be removed is less than at other ports to achieve the same outcomes. At the harbour entrance consents are being sought that would allow the port to remove up to 6.0 million cubic metres of seabed sediment. The proposed disposal site is off Fitzroy Bay, in water approximately 50 metres deep.  This site is a refinement of the existing consented disposal area. The main container berth and northern approach at Thorndon Container Wharf would also be deepened, with placement of that material, up to 270,000 cubic metres, in deeper water near the berth. Alternatives for disposal have, and will continue to be considered [hopefully].

To build relational connections with school students and encourage non-churched young people to join in what we do at St John’s, next year Hannah will be at Scots College 10 hours a week working with the Chaplain Rev David Jackson. This secondment is just for 2024, while the Assistant Chaplain Rebecca Wilcox is on 12 months parental leave. Working within a community of over a thousand young people is an expansion of the St John’s youth ministry, and we will find ways for Hannah’s ongoing ministry to be further supported by others. SLT met with WERO leaders on Monday who had a range of ideas for support and these have been actioned this week: the school made available a reflection room with senior staff for students who needed time out and someone to talk to in order to help process the event, a book of condolences is available at reception in which members of our community can write, draw and express their messages for those affected in Christchurch the school came together on the field yesterday at lunch for a unity picnic – it was great to see so many of our students there, particularly senior students – and students took part in impromptu sing-a-longs, football matches, frisbee throwing and hula hooping, to name a few activities, today the school has observed the ‘colour your day’ promotion and have observed the call to prayer at 1.30pm followed by the 2 minute silence at 1.32pm, students have created a chalk wall where anyone can leave a message for our muslim whānau, and, students have been busy creating art works inspired by and in answer to the events. The students through all of this have been wonderful and caring and I hope we can all emerge from this feeling more kinship towards each other. The events last Friday overshadowed what was a wonderful response from our young people in civic square and at parliament in relation to climate change. A large number of our students took part in the climate change march and this was worthy of national focus. We made it very clear at Wellington High School that we supported our students with this action and I was really disappointed to see some principals and teachers in other areas devaluing the students’ initiative. We should all take strength from their actions last Friday and their continuing action this week in unrelated events. They are our future and their actions over the past week have been inspiring. We amended the use of computers in the library in relation to the kinds of games being played and we reviewed our whole school filtering options. We will continue to take this very seriously. Netsafe has issued the following advice: “The footage of the Christchurch attacks is disturbing and will be harmful for people to see. If you or someone you know has viewed the video and are struggling with what you have seen please contact ‘Need to talk’ – free call or text 1737. While the content is online there is some risk that children or young people may come across it. We encourage all parents to proactively discuss with their children what they should do if they come across distressing content online. In support of Christchurch: Unity Picnic At lunchtime on Thursday, several hundred members of the WHS community congregated on the school field for our Unity Picnic. An inspired, inclusive and community-focused idea from our WERO leaders, the picnic gave us all the opportunity to sit, eat, chat and enjoy each others company. Students took the opportunity to play guitar and sing, or get involved with games of frisbee, or even to focus on school work while they ate.            Memorial Wall Students have taken the opportunity to express their respect and support for those affected by the Christchurch shootings creating a colourful memorial wall. Located by the car park near the Science block, the wall is a striking feature at the entrance to the campus.   Board Elections  | A message from the Wellington High School Board of Trustees 2019 is an election year for school trustees.  We understand that asking people to put their hand up and stand for election is difficult, especially if parents aren’t really clear on what the role entails! Find out about becoming a trustee New Zealand School Trustees Association are offering a new programme, Kōrari, which is designed to recognise the experience of existing trustees and help to encourage potential new trustees to come and find out what it really means to serve on a school board. People who want to understand what school governance looks like can come along and find out more. A hui will be facilitated by a regional adviser from NZSTA who will talk about the reality of being a trustee, the support and training that is available and encourage existing trustees to tell their story. The Hui will be held at Wellington High School on Monday 1st April at 6pm. NZSTA will provide refreshments. If you are interested in becoming a school trustee we encourage you to come along. Meet Ron Year 10 2018’s second semester sculpture will be taking up residence on the WHS campus very soon.   New Zealand Young Scientists’ Tournament Last week, teams from schools in Auckland, New Plymouth, Lower Hutt and Wellington met to compete in the first New Zealand Young Scientists’  Tournament (NZYST). Over two days, the 9 teams took part in Science Fights, presenting, opposing and reporting on research completed since September.  WHS fielded two teams: the Immovable Concrete Pillars and the Generous Practitioners who are to be congratulated for finishing 3rd and 4th respectively. Competitors may now be selected to take part in the International Young Naturalists’ Tournament in Minsk, Belarus later in 2019.                 Sport Futsal New Zealand Secondary School FUTSAL Champs will be held on Wednesday 27, Thursday 28 and Friday 29 March at the ASB Sport Center in Kilbirnie Wellington High School will be represented at the NZSS FUTSAL champs by a Junior Boys and a Senior Boys teams. A huge thank you to their coach Matua Whakamarurangi for all his time and expertise.       Lawn Bowls On Tuesday 19 March College Sport Wellington held the Lawn Bowls Championships out at Silverstream.  Theo Sutorius competed at the event for Wellington High School. Theo has played Lawn Bowls for the school for the last four years and has enjoyed every aspect of the sport.  Well done Theo!       Achievements WHS Alumnus wins Gold at Special Olympics Dominic Faherty, one of our alumni, won a GOLD MEDAL in the 200m event, and achieved a personal best, at the Special Olympics in Dubai. Dom is pictured on the podium. Congratulations! Frankie Coup — From Javelin novice to national competitor in 3 weeks! Frankie Coup threw her first javelin at the WHS Athletics day on 1st March 2019. She managed an impressive second in the junior girls’ category. After the competition she threw a few more times, one of which was 4m further than the current Junior Girls WHS record! Unfortunately, as it was out of competition, it wasn’t able to be officially recorded. Frankie was chosen to represent Wellington High at the Western Zone Athletics meet on 6 March 2019. Here she managed to win the Junior Girls’ competition, and earn a spot at the Regional Athletics meet. At the Regionals on 14 March, she won again, making her the best javelineer in Wellington. She has now been selected to represent Wellington at the National Athletics meet in Tauranga on 6 April 2019, a stunning feat for someone who threw their first javelin fewer than three weeks ago!

(Images’ links are in the image, caption or the text – click for more.) Enjoy! Characterful, “old”… medium density Montréal has a LOT of medium density residential neighbourhoods. They’re super liveable and beloved, and they are home to numbers of people that would sort out many of Wellington’s classic woes. Here’s some pretty historic-y medium density which has actual awesome neighbourhood vitality and character by the bucketload, for everyone. Medium density can be… no more than two storeys, with lots of mixed use and features like shop-top housing! No offence, Mt Vic / Khandallah / Thorndon / Woburn, but your neighbourhoods can’t hold a candle to the Castro for real liveable character, not just visual character. So leafy! Apartments you rent short-term: this is the Garden Wing of Singapore’s Shangri-La Hotel. It was built in the 1970s! Lush az. This is all open air How ’bout indigenous character! The stunning medium-density Utukoia replaces two detached homes on traditional quarter-acre sections with 14 new terrace homes (53 bedrooms total), communal facilities and a range of private, shared and public spaces. Phwoar. Density done well brings your laneways to life as a part of people’s backyards, as in Queensland… Go large We really need comprehensive, multi-block developments to sort out whole areas of our cities. You can do ’em on something that’s underused space like… a golf course? Or even as a regeneration of… ooh, maybe a large area of detached housing, hello Kāinga Ora. And finally… DensityNOTdonewell While we tend to agree with Bernard Hickey that the battle over densifying suburbs is the battle of our generation, there’s plenty of reasonable property-owning folks who are genuinely, good-faith worried. They’re worried that crappy, ugly things will be built – and are vulnerable to being scaremongered by wild claims about housing values (hat tip Property Investors Federation). And let’s be honest: NZ has strong historical form in doing medium density badly – especially badly in construction, which means bad financially for those who bought in them. The cars seem to have the best of this bargain… And bad design is far from history: there’s still plenty of crap designs out there, thanks to our unfamiliarity with good-quality medium density. Here’s one example of rubbish medium density that appears to deny its residents most of the benefits of density done well like access to green space and social connection. So let’s also be clear: nobody wants crap design or construction, and we absolutely don’t have to accept it “because housing crisis”. Making this space available for the students in our city preparing for their exams was an experiment for us as part of our Vision to connect more with our neighbourhood – creating safe spaces to be, to belong, and to navigate the tough stuff. Dragonboating This weekend our staff and student teams will be out on the water. If you are in the city at the following times, head down to the waterfront to support them. Staff teams will be on the water on Saturday 7 March at 10.00am, 10.40am, 12.20am, 1.50pm and 3.50pm. On Sunday 8 March, it is our students’ term. Their races will take place at 10.20am, 11.00am, 11.50am with the time for the finals to be confirmed. Drama Camp 2020  Year 13 Drama students travelled to Featherston this week for a three day rehearsal intensive. Isolated from distraction we took the scripted word and forged this into physical action. Hard work, focus and commitment by the students means we are now looking good for opening night on Monday 23rd March.  While Wairarapa sunshine demanded intervals of bush walks and river swims we still ploughed through an extraordinary amount of material.  We look forward to sharing with you the fruits of our labour as follows: Every Brilliant Thing by Duncan MacMillan Monday 23rd – Wednesday 25th March, 4pm and 6pm on the Riley Hall stage Girls Like That by Evan Placey Tuesday 31st March at 6pm, Wednesday 1st March at 4pm and 7pm Year 12 visit City Gallery Photography students had a treat this week listening to Shaun Waugh talk about his passion and inspiration for creating his work . Students were then taken through a workshop on developing their own cyanotype based on cubism. The students really enjoyed the opportunity to meet an artist and get involved in a hands on workshop.  Te Papa workshop Te Papa  has developed some new provocations to get audiences and in particular young adults thinking about art in the galleries in new ways. Te papa has invited a group of WHS students to trial these ideas. Last Monday,the students went into the galleries trying out and giving feedback on the provocations,  and what worked for them. The students feedback will definitely feed into what Te Papa is planning to produce in coming exhibitions. Thanks to Samson Bodkin, Eve Ashby, Dillon Parker and Molly Henry who took part in this workshop. He Kākano supported by Year 11 PE The He Kākano students were supported by a YR11 PE class during their mainstream in practice-integrated, interactive adapted involvement with peers session in the gym this week.       Careers Gateway opportunity with Chorus Telecommunications The Chorus Gateway program is run one day per week over eight weeks and is made up of two unit standards totaling 21 credits at Levels 2 and 3. The course is run by iskills, a Category One NZQA private training establishment that offers the only telecommunications technician apprenticeship in New Zealand. This course will include classroom-based learning, hands-on network lab activities, and in-field observation. Students may be introduced to industry contacts regarding employment and recruiting opportunities following successful completion of the course. They are looking for students who: Show an interest in the future of technology Enjoy learning about modern tech devices such as mobile, tablet, and device applications  Have a natural curiosity of how technologies work  Are innovative and enjoy new challenges Work well with teams  This Gateway placement is by application, applications close Friday 13 March, to apply please email paula.willis@whs.school.nz and complete a Gateway Expression of Interest form available from Student Services or on the school website, the form must be signed by a parent or caregiver.     • Urban Dream Brokerage to close in Wellington with a call to support artists developing work independently in the city
      • <figure class=" sqs-block-image-figure intrinsic " > Brides, Barbarian Productions, Bowen House, 2013 A letter to our city, our artists, our property owners, our supporters.   We have loved changing Wellington City’s dynamic through Letting Space’s Urban Dream Brokerage service - with thanks to some remarkable creative people, property owners and the funding of the Wellington City Council and Wellington Community Trust. Over the past five and half years, Urban Dream Brokerage in Wellington has placed over 300 creators and artists in 45 spaces with 61 projects. Images and details of these can be found here, including three new, current projects. Some have been short, others have lasted much longer – the amazing group Coliberate have just finished 18 months running  a mental health gym in Featherston Street, for example. On 30th June we come to the end of a three-year contract with Wellington City Council for the delivery of the service. Letting Space has made the decision not to renew this contract. Rather we will do new work under the auspices of our trust, the Wellington Independent Arts Trust.  We all continue to look for ways to make Wellington a diverse and people-oriented place. In terms of the brokerage, property owners will tell you they are facing unprecedented issues with earthquake strengthening plus a far higher demand for retail spaces in the city than when we began, during a recession. It has got harder and harder for us to find spare spaces in a popular little city. It remains key work to provide infrastructure for independent artists. This is our challenge to council, to organisations, to all: if you wish Wellington to remain creative you need to prioritise directly supporting the city's most dynamic artists, through funds or resources such as space. It is in their hands, not established organisations or events, that the future lies. This needs new and different energies right now. We also need to celebrate and thank our city. The UDB projects have seen artists and other creatives consistently and uniquely challenge the expectation of the city’s offerings. They have helped us recognise that our city needs to provide diverse living spaces for all, where many people feel included and new ideas can take shape. Where artists and other creatives have the space to grow new enterprises and ways of working, developing their own interaction with the city. This has led to us working in Dunedin - where a programme now thrives, and programmes in Porirua and Masterton, as well as providing inspiration and advice to other cities nationwide and overseas. We’ve helped along the way with the development of proposals with many groups and in this last year have offered a monthly lunchtime gathering and podcast and, currently, a mentoring programme. We’ve loved working with artists and makers, helping them see their ideas to fruition. Many have gone on to develop stronger practices and businesses as part of the city. We continue to believe this kind of work is vital and special to Wellington’s identity. A place where artists feel they can be part of the city’s fabric. It’s something that helped the notion of being a ‘creative capital’. We’re thrilled to see artist run spaces like Te Haukāinga, meanwhile and play_station join others in the CBD in the last two years – artists are stepping up and taking on property.  Others also need to lead and some are looking for space. In May 2017 we conducted focus groups and surveyed of artists with experience in working in unconventional spaces about what they really need to stay active and sustained in Wellington.  A report on this can be found here. We think it’s time to heed the lead of authorities like Dunedin City Council currently and work actively to see how artists can be more embedded in infrastructure. Artists need more than event presentation space and promotion - they need space for development, where they can collaborate and be more part of the city. They suffer from a lack of the working spaces and connections that other creatives are gaining from co-share working spaces. Artists need to be funded to be artists - to develop, think and contribute to Wellington’s public, private and government institutions. It’s about artists working to be more embedded dynamic activators of the city. And it’s about recognising artists’ time and need for development potential, rather than seeing them as temporary pop-ups, or as free agents of lightweight cool projects. It's about seeing them as contributors to our city’s development. We hope Urban Dream Brokerage has helped challenge what exchange means for Wellington’s CBD - non-commercial activity as a vital part of the urban infrastructure. Projects like Moodbank, People’s Cinema, Co-Liberate, Political Cuts, to name a few, have gone on to have lives in other places, following the legacy of Letting Space produced and curated projects in the city like Kim Paton’s Freestore.  Temporary sometimes leads to permanent, but even without physical legacy we think the traces of the network that has been created have a lasting resonance for many creators in Wellington. Urban Dream Brokerage ends in June but we are encouraging others to pick up the challenge to do this work. Never underestimate the generosity there is amongst property and business owners who understand how value in a city needs to work in different ways and are committed to Wellington’s arts ecosystem. Expect knockbacks, but hold to your vision! We are making our resources, forms and processes available through Creative Commons for anyone to pick up. Like the turn from summer to autumn, some changes are expected, while others arrive quickly, bringing with them a sense of uncertainty. This changing environment is being felt deeply across the community sector. Policy directions are shifting, funding decisions are pending. Many of us are operating in a space where the future feels less certain than before. At DCM, this has real impacts. The security of our contracts, the continuity of our mahi, and the wellbeing of our kaimahi (staff) are all front of mind. And it's not just our sector, every day we see how these pressures are being experienced by whānau across Te-Whanganui-a-Tara: the cost of living, the struggle to find and keep a safe place to live, and the weight of navigating systems that often don’t work for them. Change is constant, but for many, it doesn’t always feel like it’s moving in the right direction. In the face of this, we ground ourselves in what remains constant. Our commitment to whānau-led support, our belief in housing as a human right, and our dedication to walking alongside those doing it tough. No matter the season, our purpose stays the same. And we want you to know, we have a plan. Even in a time of shifting sands, we’re clear on our direction. We’re committed to building on what works, data-informed insights, whanau-centred practice and courageous leadership. And we know we can’t do this alone. It’s through community collaboration, with whānau, with partners, and with people like you, that real solutions are found and created. So as the leaves begin to fall and we prepare for the colder months ahead, we do so with determination, with hope, and with deep gratitude for your continued support. You are part of this journey, and together, we will keep working towards a city where everyone has a place to stand. Ngā manaakitanga, Stephen Turnock Finding An Oasis At DCM I was homeless and running around the country before I came to Wellington. I was drinking heavily. I was an alcoholic. My mental health issues hadn’t been diagnosed, so I was unmedicated and pretty messy. Before that I was in Christchurch. I got made redundant, and then I had nothing to do. I started drinking, getting into hard drugs, getting in trouble. I made a lot of people mad and I had to leave. I just wanted to hide somewhere and drink. That was my plan. It’s crazy I kept drinking even when I was that sick. I knew I was sick, but the need for alcohol was stronger than any concern I had for my own safety. I was housed out in the Hutt maybe six or seven years ago, not by DCM but someone else. They put me there to get me out of Wellington, away from the drinking. But I still drank sometimes. Then I got told my liver couldn’t take it anymore. They said it was no good. That changed everything. I had to stop drinking, and that changed my life completely. I couldn’t fill the voids with alcohol anymore. I had to deal with stuff. Face my demons. And it was too much, really. I ended up needing medication. There was nothing like DCM out in the Hutt then. I came back into town because there’s more here, and DCM is a hub that has everything I need. I’ve been coming here every day, every week, for as long as I’ve been back in Wellington. DCM has supported me in all sorts of ways. I come here for coffee, for health, for dental, and they make sure I get to my appointments. Te Aro Health and the nurse let me know if the doctors want to see me. It’s amazing that everything is just here. And yeah, I get food from DCM. It’s good to know it comes from people I know, not some stranger. It keeps it in the whānau, you know? I don’t eat much. Once a day is usually enough to keep me going. I used to be a good cook, but I’ve lost all interest in it. Cooking for one is boring. Food is just something I put in myself now. The DCM staff are even trying to get more fruits and vegetables into me. I’ll eat it if it’s put in front of me, but I won’t cook it. I’m eating like an old man now. DCM hasn’t given up on people, not like other places have. That’s what surprised me. DCM is an oasis and people rely on this place. If they weren’t here, there’d be nothing for us. We’d be eating out of rubbish bins. "DCM is absolutely brilliant because it’s saving people in Wellington. It’s keeping people alive. Without this service, people would be lost. They’d just be lost." These days, I guess, I’m mostly just working out what life looks like until I die. That’s what concerns me now. My health isn’t great. I don’t know how long I’ve got, but I’m trying to be all right until then. If you’re struggling, don’t stop yourself. Get to DCM. If they see the need, they’ll help. I fully recommend it to anyone in Wellington who needs support. Spotlight on Lynda: Fundraising For Hope Lynda McGregor, owner of Little Bread Loaf, wears many hats. She runs a small artisan bakery in Lower Hutt where everything is made from scratch, a busy café in Miramar, works in fresh produce markets, and does catering too. Yet despite her full plate (pun intended), Lynda makes time to support DCM. Her connection with DCM began when she saw one of our Instagram posts calling for donations. “It really moved me,” she says. “I just thought, we can all do something to help our community. It’s not about pity, it’s about showing up and helping.” Lynda shared the post, a conversation followed, then a tour, and she soon found herself organising her first foodbank collection for DCM at Little Bread Loaf where she and her community raised over 200 cans of food. “I’ve always known about DCM and the work you do. I know you don’t get as much funding as the bigger charities, and I felt I could add value here in a way that would make a real impact.” Supporting DCM wasn’t a random choice. It aligned with Lynda’s values. “My mum always tithed. She gave a portion of what she had or her time to help others. I’ve always tried to do that too. I’m not religious, but giving back is a part of who I am.” She’s also realistic. “In the charity sector, it’s often the causes that are more ‘attractive’ that get attention". But DCM, she says, offers something deeper. “I truly believe that nobody wakes up wanting to be on the street. DCM works with some of the most vulnerable people in Wellington and you stay constant, even when others would walk away. The whānau you support can keep coming back for coffee, a chat, or whatever they need and you are always there for them.” For Lynda, donating food is not about charity. It’s about manaakitanga. “If the food isn’t good enough for me to eat, I won’t bring it in. What I give has to be mana enhancing; for DCM, for me as the maker, and for anyone who receives it. I want people to feel dignity when they receive something from me.” She adds that contributing makes her feel good too. “It feeds my soul. I do this for selfish reasons because it makes me happy and brings me joy.” Lynda has seen the challenges facing our communities and the pressure DCM is under. “It makes me sad to see the foodbank shelves so bare. You’re doing incredible work, and so much of it comes from heart. You can tell that your team is here because they genuinely want to be of service.” She believes anyone can make a difference and her hope is that more people and businesses will step up.. “You don’t have to give a lot. A couple of cans, a few dollars, whatever you can manage. That small act might have a huge impact on someone’s day." She adds, "It’s not about changing someone’s whole life. It’s about easing their path just a little. It’s about giving someone a little hope.” We are so thankful to Lynda, and our other wonderful supporters, for standing with us. DCM is proud to work alongside people who care so deeply about making Wellington a city where everybody has a place. This year, we are running a Foodbank Appeal Week from 17 to 24 May, and we are inviting the community to help us to continue to provide essential food support to Wellington’s most marginalised residents.       • Holly McEntegart in conversation with Anne Noble, facilitated by Mark Amery <figure class=" sqs-block-image-figure intrinsic " > Image: Anne Noble Merging her work as an artist, mother and full spectrum doula, Holli McEntegart recently brought something remarkably different to the bustle of Wellington’s Courtenay Place, in an exploration of art as a social practice.  Providing a warm, calm space for participation, Inhabit brought together mothers and their infants to examine how community, cultural and whānau postpartum care has changed in Aotearoa, sharing experiences in real-time and as oral history. A private issue was brought into a public realm. Rethinking the artist’s role in society, McEntegart was supported by artist Anne Noble in a project commissioned by Letting Space for vacant space activators Urban Dream Brokerage. McEntegart now has plans to bring the project to Auckland.  Here are Holli and Anne in conversation. Mark Amery Anne Noble: Letting Space and Urban Dream Brokerage have made a really remarkable contribution to the Wellington art scene. Letting Space positioned itself as an entity that sits outside the conventional domain of the gallery, where the artist is mostly defined e as a producer of objects and artefacts. They offered an experimental space and an invitation to artists to expand the ecology of contemporary art and provide support for them to provide a new kind of experience for communities and publics to engage with contemporary art I see Inhabit as a perfect example of the kind of project that Letting Space and Urban Dream Brokerage were established to nurture, enable and support.  When I first thought about your ambition for Inhabit: to marry both your practices as an artist and a full spectrum doula, one of my first questions was about the expanded role of the artist in a social practice. How is your work first and foremost art while being shaped by other practices and concerns?   What came to mind was a book [^1] I’ve had on my bookshelf, which has on its cover The Artist As followed by a list: that includes such descriptors of the artist as .. producer; the artist as… archivist; the artist as… ethnographer; the artist as… catalyst; the artist as… orchestrator; the artist as… poet; the artist as… curator. And it ends with this really beautiful phrase in capital letters: AND MANY OTHER THINGS FIRST. This points to the fundamental premise of your art practice - driven and formed by another whole domain of expertise, professional practice, experience and activist concerns. <figure class=" sqs-block-image-figure intrinsic " > Image: Anne Noble | Infant massage with Jo Chambers. From left: Megan Rodgers and Jasper, Jo Chambers from Blissful Bubs You define yourself as a social practice artist but you also practice as a full spectrum doula.   How did you arrive at the idea of merging your practice as an artist with your life as a mother, your interest in the post-partum experience and your activism in this space?    Holli McEntegart: You and I talked a lot about the artist as a conduit; or as activator. As a young artist I was always really interested in capturing images of moments that had complicated stories behind them. I realised that my interest was often more in the story; how we got to this point; the full stop. The work was always, for me, in the negotiation of  getting to that image - with the image itself feeling lacklustre in comparison to that journey. Then when I moved to Pittsburgh to complete my Masters I found that there was a greater focus on social practice as a role for the artmaker. The driving need for me has always been to build relationships, and therefore community. So when I was taking photographs I would spend months getting to know people, navigating the permission, not just to be there, but to be accepted; to belong. I’ve joined every group under the sun! A loon (an aquatic bird) counting group in Maine, a porcelain painting group in Mt Albert, a bluegrass group, banjo club and a barbershop quartet in Pittsburgh, and a cake decorating group in Otara, to name a few. But I didn't feel like I had the right to be there unless I was really an accepted part of the community. That came to a head for me in Pittsburgh when I joined a  semi-gated spiritualist community called Lily Dale, and began making work out of the readings they were doing for me. I would spend eight months with them before I could make that work. By the time I was living in New York there were many grants, residencies and galleries supporting a socially engaged framework of art making. My eyes were opened to the fact that this community exchange and the energy I was investing into relationship building was not only valid, it was the work.That really gave me permission to move past just documenting my work with photographs or videos and writing and to pull the focus back to the process, the making and the relationship tending.  Research is a huge part of my process, whatever I’m working on I’m always off down a research tunnel. So, when I got pregnant in New York with my first child Arlo I went on a huge journey to understand pregnancy, birth and everything that was happening to my body. I discovered that in New York City, the maternal mortality rate in pregnancy, birth and early postpartum is astoundingly high, and that black women are 12 times more likely to die in childbirth than white women. OB’s are often pushing for a lot of unnecessary interventions within the hospital system and midwives are not as commonly used, though that is changing. I come from a family of home birthers in New Zealand, it was normalised and seemed like the obvious place for me to birth, but only around 1.5% of people give birth at home in the US, so it's quite a radical thing to do in that context.  I was so lucky that I had a neighbour and friend who was training to be a midwife and was working as a birth doula. Through her I discovered this group of folks called doulas. I started learning about the role they play in birth work, about reproductive and birth justice advocacy, and about everything I was going to need to know to birth my baby at home while being supported by a midwife and doula team. <figure class=" sqs-block-image-figure intrinsic " > Image: Anne Noble New York City is so compact, we had a tiny apartment and I had a home studio. My son, Arlo, was born underwater, in a birth pool on my studio floor. At that point I had been working for some time within these spiritualist communities. I had been really delving into why people were seeking healing in these communities and what it meant to be constantly practising these healing rituals. Birthing my son in my studio was like an epiphany, I was on a healing journey myself and this was a part of the work.  Birth was incredibly healing for me at that point in my life and then, like many people, postpartum was a completely different beast. Like most people experiencing giving birth far from their home and family, I just felt an intense lack of support from the world. And with that a deep loneliness. I was so homesick. My parents came to visit for two weeks which was incredible, but it went so fast. A few good friends showed up as best they could but I was living and working as an artist in New York, I didn’t know anyone with babies or even young kids. People are busy - for everyone else, life goes on. It’s the postpartum person that is stuck in stillness, but constantly working. It was a totally different world. You get the sense  that everybody shows up for birth, everyones interested, you learn so much about pregnancy and childbirth, tracking the changes in your body all the way through to this kind of event, and then everyone leaves, and you’re left in charge of a human. It’s wild, uncharted territory and no-one’s told you that much, or what they have told you is irrelevant, biassed, outdated and sometimes even harmful. I longed for my family, mostly for my mum. I found myself floating out to sea, and there was a realisation that no one was going to rescue me - I had to rescue myself. And to do that I needed  to dive even deeper into what was happening to me, go down that research tunnel again and find out what support there was in the world and how I could heal.  That led to me doing Seen, a postpartum doula mentorship programme with Birdsong Brooklyn, and learning constantly - four or five months too late - what could have rescued me before I needed rescuing! It was eye opening and there was a lot of deep grief about the care I had missed out on, and the ways I could have been  supported. I was diving deeply into the profoundness of becoming a mother and the reality of how much is lacking in the world in supporting new parents. I just fell in love with this idea that we could be healing collectively if we just looked after each other better and shared our knowledge.  I built my community from that in New York in that first year of parenting. At that point I had been  working for three years as the studio manager for an incredible artist, Janine Antoni, who is also a parent and understands that mothering work. It was a huge question for me: how do I keep working in the world as an artist, be able to show up as a mother and earn enough money to live? How do I juggle all of this and stay tethered to myself? I gave birth to my son when I was 38 and I was being called a geriatric mother by the medical system. It scared me. I wanted to breathe in my baby, just inhale him and not miss a second. But  how do I do that and keep up my practice? Well… I just gave birth to my son in my studio…. It was these layers of realisation: this labour is the work. I have to reframe my life so that this labour of the home, the labour of care, of mothering, is seen and valued. So I left my job in the studio with Janine and went straight into postpartum doula training. I needed to be immersed in the community in the same way I had been with the spiritualists or the cake decorators or the bird counters in Maine. <figure class=" sqs-block-image-figure intrinsic " > Image: Holli McEntegart | Multiples Feeding Support Group. From left: Jessie Lee Broadbent, anon Anne: You have talked about your journey as a photographer engaging with communities, and how the outcome can be separated from those experiences that feel like part of the work. That is n true for many documentary photography projects.You’ve also described beautifully your dissatisfaction with being both outside a subject and yet needing to be  right in the heart of it.  The notion of a social practice artist is less common in New Zealand than in the US. It has currency in art schools, but my instinct when we first met and talked was that you have a really highly evolved practice in which you prioritise your  relationship as an artist to the post-partum communities you engage with  Your work  begins with you your life as a mother and your practice as a doula being the site of public art activism, of making the post-partum world experience shared and visible. How have you then addressed the visibility of this as an artwork? You only need to look at the project website to see the level of community engagement and the number of people you have drawn into this space. It’s really significant. Those workshops - people flocked to them. But to make it public, visible to participants and to audiences how does that work?  Holli: What comes first for me is the relationship, being a good community member and trust. I come at relationship building and getting people involved with their whole heart; with a genuine interest and respect. I have to have something at risk as well. Inhabit was a year in the making, but the day we opened, with a multiples lactation support workshop. We had six twin mums and probably six assistants or helpers, including grandmas, friends, lactation and doula support. That's 12 babies plus Indigo [Holli’s own baby]. Over 24 bodies breathing life into the space. That was the moment that the work became art; that it became an artwork. It was activated by the community of people in the room and their energy. Up until then there’s a lot of risk on my part because I don’t know who is going to show up and what they will bring on the day. The work is filled with intention but it has to meet people where they are and vice versa, and for that reason, it’s never the same, it evolves and unfolds and, much like mothering, I must surrender to it.   I think I’m comfortable leaning into the unknown. Within a socially engaged practice you really don’t know how your participants or your audience (the public) are going to enter the work.  I consider the folks facilitating  workshops my co-creators. There were six months of emailing and zoom conversations about what I was making with that final group of people, so many conversations about what the community needed. And then there was a point when  they came to me with a  plan to set up this specific workshop for multiples families. They were asking for my permission, and I was overjoyed because, it was at that point that they took ownership and really began to have agency within the work. That was the moment when the community was activated, they started creating what they needed under the umbrella that I offered - this community activation was where the social practice aspect of the work really came into play. <figure class=" sqs-block-image-figure intrinsic " > Image: Milan Maric | Combined yoga and Infant massage workshop with Emma Chen Flitcroft and Jo Chambers I was coming to Wellington, into a community I’m not from, so I’m constantly asking myself, how do I leave this space better than when I got here?  Within social practice I think there is a very real responsibility to care for the community you're working in and to make sure there are ongoing care agreements in that community. Everyone that provided a workshop for Inhabit offers free or sliding scale services that could continue to be accessed after Inhabit closed for example.  Anne: That’s a beautiful description of the artist as catalyst. I’m very fond of the notion that when an artist plays those roles, the artist in a conventional sense disappears to become a  generating and catalysing force  Holli: I’m interested in the way my role shifted from facilitator to participant, or mother , or host. Hourly that changed. Originally I thought I would be facilitating some workshops but I didn't end up doing that because so many people wanted to facilitate their own. At the beginning of each workshop I would introduce the project and really ground it back into the context of an artwork, to remind people they were participating in something both bigger than them, but also inherently generated by them, and then I would participate alongside them. I was  never an observer, I was a participant.  I think it’s really important I have the ability to be part of what’s happening as opposed to being an outsider. Learning, participating and being vulnerable. That vulnerability permissions other people in the space to also be vulnerable. It’s not like, as you’re describing Anne, that ‘‘you’re the artist and you’re over there’ on a pedestal. The process is about me sinking back into the work. It’s a dance between making sure people feel like they are being held and acknowledged and the space is being tended to in the correct way, but not dominating it. <figure class=" sqs-block-image-figure intrinsic " > Image: Anne Noble Anne: As a public artwork, positioned in Courtenay Place, it was a really beautiful intervention with really subtle signage and this glowing light masked by a wall of handmade stitched together nappies! It offered a surprising encounter that was intriguingly signposted and people were welcomed to just stop and to consider what it might be - as a public art project.  Sometimes I was amazed at the number of people participating and how  the work created an opportunity for a community to assemble. How did you introduce participants to the process of being part of something for them but also part of something larger? Of being participants and collaborators in Inhabit as an artwork. Holli: That was definitely one of my biggest challenges. There were a couple of things I did practically. Even before Inhabit opened I worked very hard to centre the project in the community with this drawing project that involved - six Love Note posters that were plastered repetitively around the city in the two weeks leading up to our opening. I was documenting them in situ and sending images of them to people when they were signing up for the workshops as well as using them in social media. So there was a centring of it as an art project before they arrived. Most people had seen these drawings and then saw the wall of Love Notes  growing on the wall when they came into the space. I introduced that as a collaborative drawing project and really impressed the importance of adding everyone's voice to that growing archive.   <figure class=" sqs-block-image-figure intrinsic " > Image: Lily Dowd I constantly was re-centring it as an artwork in this way all the time, and encouraging the public  to participate, reminding them of what they are a part of. I see the Love Notes as the beginning of an archive of postpartum stories - a collection. And that maybe this is how we start something: a movement, a book, an archive - we just have to start putting our stories on the wall. I think that grew really organically and became a way for people to gently  be reminded of the fact that they were a part of an artwork, and then they forgot about it - which was great. Someone hands them a bowl of soup, nourishes them, checks in and makes sure they’re OK. Offers to hold their baby.  and that energy of care flows into the space and  people feel really comfortable. And that comfort was there in part because I was there visibly parenting, making the work. Creating a space that makes visible the lived experience of parenting, and artmaking at the same time.   <figure class=" sqs-block-image-figure intrinsic " > Image: Anne Noble As it transpired there was very little foot traffic, and actually the space needed to be very protected, intimate and gate kept. So the curtain that I made really provided a level of intimacy. It is another drawing project I had been working on as a part of the show, but I didn’t quite know where it would fit. I’ve been collecting these used flat nappies. They are very identifiable, heavily washed and starched white cotton with a red stripe down the side. They are the kind of do everything cloth of motherhood. So representative of the labour of the home. Soaking up the mess of it all. I’ve been stamping all over them with my own mother at my kitchen table, “Ssshhhhhh sshhh shhh ssshhh shh shh shh…” On the first day of installation it was clear to me that we needed to be able to transform the space into a private, intimate one, and to open it up to the world. Sewing the nappies together to make a curtain was a wonderful way to create that boundary between public and private. And then at the end of the last workshop I was really inspired to “pull back that curtain” and be seen. I called you and asked you to document this moment of being seen in parenting and artmaking. It was such a moment of connectivity and community connection. There’s now two groups I believe that came together at Inhabit and are continuing to meet. It was great to cultivate this level of nurturance and community engagement  in a place like Courtenay Place - buses, cars and people with so much going-to-work energy,  once we pulled back that curtain I think people were taken aback by it “there are so many babies!” <figure class=" sqs-block-image-figure intrinsic " > Image: Milan Maric | Combined yoga and Infant massage workshop with Emma Chen Flitcroft and Jo Chambers Anne: Yes it was a brightly lit window that glowed like a little jewel! And was such a surprising experience walking by. You’ve described the artist as a generator and how there is a legacy for participants beyond the exhibition space. What were some of the highpoints during Inhabit and some of those legacies? Holli: The highest high was our opening, that first day. 13 babies in the space. One of the sets of twins was only five weeks old and it was their first time out of the house and their mum had driven an hour to get there, they spent all day with us. Any future Inhabit projects will always open with a multiples workshop  because these folks are the least catered for within the system. The world was not made for people birthing two or three babies at a time… So to have this space where people were surrounded by support and advice and understanding. It was so magic and it was so clear there was a need for that.  I think that in the current Covid climate people are feeling so much more isolated and unable to get out of the house. Opportunities for connection that were available to parents pre covid often aren't now, like community or library meetups and coffee groups. Many people were speaking of coming to Inhabit  as the first time they’d been to a group outside the home, there is a lot of isolation and fear out there, and a deep lack in support services. A few people who weren’t parents had some very interesting interactions with the space as an artwork, which I found fascinating. Some really generative conversations came from them being confronted: that they were coming to a public  exhibition, and were questioning ‘what is this?!’ I had very interesting conversations with other artists about what participation looks like when you’re not a parent. For parents their participation was organic but for others, it felt very different. They accessed it through my facilitation and it was interesting seeing them sink into comfort because they were being cared for; getting down on the floor and playing with Indigo. Having some soup, and learning about traditions of postpartum care and methodologies. I’m interested in pulling back the veil on this kind of care work because we can all benefit from learning how to tend to our communities and families. <figure class=" sqs-block-image-figure intrinsic " > Image: Milan Maric Another highlight was my involvement with Little Shadow. They run perinatal mental health support groups in the Wellington region and virtually across the motu. They were so supportive of this project. They really saw the power of what Inhabit created in offering an entrance point  to conversations about perinatal mental health that are softer and more nurturing than how it’s often tackled when people are looking for support within a healthcare system. Inhabit provides nourishing food, a space to express yourself creatively, a place to move your postpartum body,  and a room full of folks on a similar path. Once there, we are able to get into the nitty gritty of what we are all experiencing because the space itself is so tended to. Something that I repeat all the time is that I’m examining patterns of care, whilst caring for our communities. I want to decolonise postpartum care so that we may all gain the knowledge of how to care for each other. Then there was that final reveal, pulling back that curtain. I felt I was truly being seen as my whole self in the work. Before that point I was a shapeshifter facilitating everybody else's journey. But at that moment I was in my deeply creative space of making and mothering as I  finished the project. It felt like closure and an answer to that question of how I can be an artist, make work and be a parent. It struck me how that question has deeply impacted my relationships with people and how I move in the world.  In my first few days in Wellington I had a clear vision of that image we captured at the  end. I saw the room glowing with light, semi dark outside and the interior being a place of making and of process. A gallery, and a living room and a studio and a feeding place. Where bums are getting changed, a place where all of life is happening at the same time. And that the public are walking past and peeking in. The labour of parenthood and of artmaking is usually so invisible. That moment at the end just felt like: let’s get it all on display! <figure class=" sqs-block-image-figure intrinsic " > Image: Milan Maric <figure class=" sqs-block-image-figure intrinsic " > Image: Milan Maric Anne: I love what you say about risk. Because if art doesn't involve risk it doesn't leave the opportunity for engagement - If it's there and says it all it doesn’t ask very much of people. The way both your processes of making and lived experience are entirely central to the work raises questions for people coming in off the street  - challenging their notions about art - and confronts them with the invisibility of the post-partum experience. Can you talk about how Inhabit is an evolving work? How it’s more than  a one-off event where communities come together and are potentially transformed. How is the  website a part of the evolution of the work? Holli: If you are thinking about community engagement and looking at different types of communities' needs then you’ve got to move around those communities. My vision for Inhabit was always that it would move around the motu. One of the things I thought was important about the experience in Wellington was that it felt disruptive. It felt radical. It was an  interesting way to inhabit vacant space in the CBD and disrupt a community. It ignited something that people were aware they needed, but no-one knew how to connect on and build.  <figure class=" sqs-block-image-figure intrinsic " > Image: Anne Noble I think there’s a lot of power in Inhabit travelling around regionally and disrupting systems in ways that are really positive and ignite connection. I think of little things growing, sprouting. And of having this homebase of an archive online where we can collect and hold these postpartum stories and learn from what we’ve been doing here to better support communities. Anne: Thanks Holli - for the pleasure of being a small part of this project with you.  Anne Noble (Laureate), ONZM, is a photographer and curator whose work spans still and moving image, installation and international curatorial commissions. Over multiple projects Annne Noble has considered the significance of memory and imagination to personal and cultural narratives of place and belonging.Holli McEntegart is an interdisciplinary artist using social practice, video, performance, photography and text. She holds a Bachelor of Visual Arts in Photography (NZ), and a Masters of Visual Art and Design from Auckland University of Technology (NZ), which included a one year MFA scholarship at Carnegie Mellon School of Art, Pittsburgh (USA). In 2014  she was an artist in residence at the Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture in Maine (USA). Her work has been performed and exhibited throughout the USA and New Zealand. In 2018 she trained as a Full Spectrum Doula after giving birth to her first son in Brooklyn, New York. Returning to Aotearoa in 2020, where she continues her work as an artist and as a Reproductive Justice Advocate.     • Harakeke Happenings in Term 2
      • We have been a busy hub in Harakeke so far this term! We have been focusing on:*Art - completing portraits either in Picasso style or using foreshortening (optical illusion making some parts of our body look closer than others) *Performance - for our official school opening all students took part in at least one performance, with most students being involved in several, including street dance, guitar, tuned percussion, Chinese dance, World Cafe maths, library activities, singing and many more! We also performed a wide variety of items for our school concert after the official opening.*Creative electives - choosing from a range of activities such as creating dioramas and print making*Language learning: Te Reo Maori and Mandarin*Developing our understanding and performance of our powhiri ceremony *Maths and literacy learning*Music - tuned percussion, singing*Learning conferences: all students spent between 30-45 minutes with one of the Harakeke teachers talking through their three matrices (maths, reading, writing). This discussion then led to the creation of a personal learning treaty (PLT) for each student, including a series of goals chosen by the student, using their matrices to identify their next learning steps. Students then talked through the matrices and their PLT with their parent/s, and these documents have been shared with students and parents so that they can be continually viewed and updated. Now that our art unveiling and school opening  ceremonies are behind us we can move into the more settled part of our term. The learning conferences and creation of PLTs have been extremely useful in helping to inform our planning for the rest of this term. Focus areas for Weeks 5-10:*Maths: Specific skills based work through workshops, Snappers and World Cafe Maths. For information on World Cafe Maths please see our Harakeke blog - scroll down a little way to find an explanation of it. Snapper maths involves short videos we are creating to explain specific skills. To view Snappers we have created thus far please see the ‘Snapper’ link at the top of our Harakeke blog. Our Snappers will not only be about maths skills, they will be created for all learning areas. We have just begun to create them, so there are only a few to begin with...watch this space! Maths will be personalised for all students with workshops, activities and snappers developed for groups of students needing specific instruction or skill development. We are currently spending time showing the students how to use their maths matrix and PLT to identify their next learning steps and then choose particular activities/websites/materials/textbooks to achieve their learning goal. Specific maths areas we will be focusing on: fractions, division and multiplication skills and strategies, problem posing and solving.Below is a collage of Snapper maths work: *Literacy: Matariki module - students are reading and analysing books and information about Matariki (Maori New Year). They share their learning in a variety of ways, including retelling the story orally and in written form. Students will then be researching a range of Maori legends explaining Matariki and presenting their learning in a variety of forms, culminating in a Harakeke video telling the story of Matariki, along with a range of legends. They will then be exploring and researching explanations of the Matariki stars from other countries and cultures. We are also developing our narrative writing skills, including giving and receiving feedback from peers. Students are practicing using their reading and writing matrices and their PLTs to ascertain the particular skills they need to focus on when reading and writing. Creative writing is also an ongoing task for all students. *Inquiry: Students are continuing with their inquiries from last term (such as creating lunch orders made for students by students, exploring 1-1 devices at school and ordering senior literacy resources). These inquiries will be completed by the end of Week 6, with proposals, where necessary, written and presented, and actions taken across the school. For Weeks 7-10 a variety of different inquiry work will then begin, including beginning a travel plan for the school (a group of students investigating how students travel to school, exploring how environmentally friendly our travel habits are to/from school and looking at any actions we can take to increase sustainable and environmentally friendly travel) and exploring our school and its features. Food tech: Amaria Picard will begin working with our school lunches inquiry group to start creating school lunches prepared and cooked by students one day a week. This module will include planning, costing, purchasing, storing and cooking the lunches. Amaria will work with this group for 5 weeks, and then she will start the same module with another group of students. All Yr 4-6 students will complete this food tech module with her by the end of the year.  *Active learners: We will continue to focus on students becoming active, self-directed learners through developing their understanding and use of their matrices and PLTs to inform their learning choices. All students will be directed to continually access and use their matrices to ensure their focus is on their next learning steps in reading, writing and maths. Every Friday students spend an hour reflecting on their learning, reviewing their PLT goals and identifying what they have done to achieve their learning goals. They are also asked to inform teachers of the workshops, Snappers or 1-1 guidance they now need to achieve their learning goals.
