    • If the recent SW Short Course champs is anything to go by, 2007/08 looks set to be a bumper year for local and national records set by Wellington swimmers. 28 local and 4 national records were broken at the meet, beating the 27 local and one national record set in 2005/06. Wellington swimmers are well on track to surpass the 59 SW and 8 SNZ records broken in 05/06 and we still have 7 months to go!

    • Zephyr Rovers opened their Division 1 campaign with a thrashing of Don Logan FC at the Shed of Dreams this afternoon. "I think it is stunning that with so many players out we can still field a strong team and beat a team that has previously given us a lesson or two" said Hall "we took them to the cleaners in the first spell and it was amazing to be 7 - 0 up at half time, even though Pete Roberts (pictured) had a gammy leg".

    • The city council has voted in favour of a flyover at the Basin Reserve, in spite of the fact that the city continues to be deeply divided over the issue. The vote, by 7 to 6, is a disappointment for Mayor Celia Wade-Brown, who has argued against the flyover since she successfully campaigned for the mayoralty against the pro-flyover mayor Kerry Prendergast. It was a narrow win, and for a while the new council had a one-vote majority against the flyover. But then Andy Foster changed sides.

    • The April meeting of the Wellington VHF Group will be held at the Band Rotunda, Oriental Parade, Wellington, starting at 7:30pm. The Band Rotunda room is under the Fishermans Table restaurant, and the access id from the footpath to the right of the restaurant entrance, down the steps. (The change in venue is due to the usual meeting place at Tawa being used by the Council for a Disaster Recovery test programme). The meeting will cover the NZART Remits, and be followed by a “show-and-tell” session, and photos of the work that is going on up at Belmont.

    • You may have seen headlines telling you that Wellington rental prices are dropping, that it’s a renter’s market, or that with the exodus of public service workers from the capital, landlords are getting desperate. To some extent, that is true, and to a greater extent, it’s not. Salient asked Trade Me about the current perceptions of the rental market. Year on year, the asking price for a property in Wellington was down 2.9%, and since September 2024, Trade Me saw a 28% increase in the number of rental listings in the city. These figures might lead you to believe that rents are dropping. Well, they’re not (in most places). Between December 2024 and January 2025, the median rental price went from $650 to $675 according to Trade Me’s data.

• • Metlink Encourages Early Bedtimes for Students—Without Consultation

    • Students having a night out will soon no longer be able to take the night bus home, after the Greater Wellington Regional Council agreed to scrap the service last week. Neither VUWSA nor Te Tira Ahu Pae—the Massey equivalent—were consulted on the changes. Metlink’s night buses run between 1 and 4.30am on Saturday and Sunday mornings, providing a cheap(ish) option for students and others in town to get home safely. With low patronage, Metlink made the call to ax them in favour of high-frequency (the 1, 2, 7, ect.) services running later into the night and starting earlier in the morning.

    • Metlink is pleased to announce Mana Newlands by Transdev as their partner for the new airport express bus service launching in 2022. The partnership means that Wellingtonians from across the region will soon have an easy and convenient way to get to the Airport, with a new 7-day bus service set to run from Wellington Railway Station to the Airport in 2022. The service, funded by Metlink and delivered by Mana Newlands by Transdev as part of a six-year contract, will operate on the Metlink network, and will have Snapper ticketing, credit and debit payments by EFTPOS, real-time information and a dedicated fleet of ten new zero-emissions electric buses.

History tells us that you can never assume that you’ve beaten Upper Hutt until the final whistle. They certainly stuck with us in the first half and at half time we knew we were in a tight contest. Fortunately OBU had a strong bench and started to run away in the last quarter. Conditions The forecasters had told us it would be overcast and dry. It was overcast and wet with frequent showers throughout the match. It was cool but not bitterly cold. What little wind their was had little effect on the play. The surface was good, a bit sticky but firm with no pooling of water. OBU was playing from the Basin Reserve end in the first half. John ‘JC’ Cable was kindly present to correct my errors again. Notable performances Dale once again ran the back-line magnificently and kicked well when the commentators curse wasn’t applied! Both halfbacks were a nuisance for Upper Hutt today with Kyle starting and Matt Fowler taking over around the 50 minute mark. We’re lucky to have 2 halfbacks of this calibre. The Plumtree boys both played well. Both delivered the last pass for the other to score late in the second half. Once again the whole front row deserves massive ups for a truly dominant performance. There is a danger this bullet point will remain for the whole season! The locking combination of James and Taine together was very physical at set piece and the breakdown. Both have also proved that they’re no slouches where the goal-line is concerned. The newer players in their first few games for OBU at this level are finding their feet and becoming worthy contributors. Lawry, Josh, Tiaki, Olly all performing well. Keep it up lads! Kenan Gillson also had a busy game chalking up the full 80 minutes and was part of an efficient and lineout and dominant scrum. Plenty of ruck & maul and defense too. How the game unfolded 2 mins There is an impressive lineout drive followed by some slick hands in the backs. The ball is moved to the left with a quick flick on to Sam Godwin who dives over, try! The conversion from wide is good OBU 7-0 8 mins Lineout penalty to Upper Hutt about 38 metres out in front. It drops short and is cleared 12 mins Upper Hutt take the lineout from a penalty and setup the drive. They then execute a cut move on the centre who goes through and scores it under the sticks. Easy conversion taken and scores are locked. 7-7 18 mins Fui heads to the sideline to get some cranial claret taken care of. Lawry takes the field but this week the fan club have a 30 second delay before the cheer for some reason! 20 mins Jack Green goes down in a heap near the left-hand touch about the 10m line after a move down the sideline. The referee shows no sympathy and continues with the next scrum back infield to leave Jack the indignity of the bum shuffle to get off the field! Oliver Paotonu replaces Jack for the rest of the game. It looks like it might be a hamstring injury. Hopefully it’s not too severe and Jack is back with the team soon. The Upper Hutt Far Side boys claim that it could only be a back with a hamstring injury as forwards think that’s something you roast on Sundays. 22 mins Good move to the right side of the field. The ref plays advantage for the Upper Hutt backs being offside. Knowing the advantage is there OBU kick for the corner but it just goes out in the corner before any scoreboard adjustments are needed. We come back for the penalty and elect to take the shot 22m out and handily placed to the middle. But just as we were banking on it we accidentally applied the commentators curse and the shot misses. 25 mins Fui comes back with a bandage that the 1980s would be proud of and Lawry takes a seat. 26 mins OBU takes the lineout from a penalty deep in Upper Hutt’s half. There are several pick and go’s on the Upper Hutt line with Sam Godwin among those having a good dig at the line until James Poloniati completes the move by crashing over to the right of the posts. Conversion successful. OBU 14-7 That’s the way it stayed until half time. 42 mins OBU are penalised for hands in the ruck. Upper Hutt take the shot in front about 30 meters out. Once again commentators curse strikes as it looks like an easy shot but misses. 45 mins The first lot of tactical subs come on – Shamus, Paddy and Morgan for his 50th on and Sam Coombs, Tiaki and Sam Godwin off. All those sitting down contributed well to the cause! 46 mins There is a frantic OBU attack with quick pick and go’s on the Upper Hutt line. Upper Hutt do well to repel the attack for now and it’s held up in goal. OBU feed to the scrum. 48 mins The OBU scrum marches the Rams back and Shamus takes the spoils from number 8.  Conversion successful. Matt Fowler comes on for Kyle Preston. OBU 21-7 52 mins Upper Hutt fumble a lineout in their own half. It ends up with James Poloniati. From the resulting melee it comes out to Paddy Carter in the middle of the pitch who with horns locked bumps a Ram back on his backside ensuring the shorts will need a wash. He then runs it into the line with good pace and crashes over near the corner. The extras are added. OBU 28-7 53 mins Josh Gimblett gets a break on the bench after a hard working half. Matt Sleith gets a run on the side of the scrum. The kickoff ends up short so we have a scrum on halfway. There is some great play off the back of a solid scrum from Shamus and some clever interplay between Sam Reid and Reece but it breaks down. 65 mins Lawry comes on for Fui. There is then some good play from Upper Hutt giving themselves every chance but frustratingly for them the last pass goes to grass and dribbles over the sideline. 71 mins Upper Hutt penalised for holding on. The quick tap is taken and from the next phase Reece drops a nice inside ball to brother Taine who tracks it in to get the 5. Conversion misses. OBU 33-7 74 mins OBU break out of their own half with some fast work. OBU got in behind the defensive line a couple of times and it looked like Callum H would take it all the way for a second but just got caught. From the phase the ball is moved wide to the left and Taine returns the favour to brother Reece with the last pass leaving a run to the corner. Conversion drifts away. • • 2022 Div II – What a blast!

    • The team set off for Dunedin to compete in the Div II competition on Saturday 7 May for five days of racing. The team consisted of 12 swimmers and 4 parents, with another 2 swimmers and 2 parents joining the team later in the week. We’d lost one team member due to testing positive for Covid a couple of days earlier, but this was the largest team the club has taken to Div II in recent memory. On arrival, we explored Larnach Castle and the iconic Baldwin street (the worlds steepest street). We spent hours at the castle and the kids were fascinated by how people lived back then. We escaped Baldwin street without any injuries, the main aim of coach Nadia!

Samaritans volunteers are everyday people who range in age from 20 to 80. Wellington Samaritans has been operating since 1965. They have over 80 volunteers and take over 20,000 calls per year. We are seeking people who are good listeners, caring and empathetic, to help operate our 24 hours helpline. We provide full training and on-going support.     • CubaDupa Presents Go Home Stay Home, a Live-Streamed Musical Happening Wellington festival set to unite the community through virtual music festival   Following the cancellation of CubaDupa, the festival team have been working on a remedy—a virtual way to celebrate the creativity and community that would have taken over Cuba Street on the 28th and 29th March, with over 1500 artists and 450 performances throughout Wellington’s favourite precinct. And so, Go Home Stay Home – a live-streamed virtual festival has been arranged to keep you smiling through week four of lockdown with a selection of the CubaDupa 2020 artists. Festival Director Gerry Paul says “This is a way of keeping the CubaDupa fire burning until we next hit the streets. And it’s a time when the creativity and talent of our artists are playing such an important part in keeping us sane and inspired – so tune in and come together in solidarity – he waka eke noa!” The programme for Go Home Stay Home may be on a micro scale compared to the monumental street festival, but you can expect it to be bursting with the same energy and vibrancy CubaDupa is known for.    On Saturday 18 April from 5 pm, settle in for an evening of sweet tunes from fresh local artists alongside well-loved homegrown acts, streaming live on the CubaDupa Facebook page. Auckland alt-pop-rock band Ha the Unclear will join us from the comfort of their bubble, along with Miss June who will treat the audience to a solo set—a rare occurrence for the noisy, energetic punk rock four-piece. After a two year stint in London, Wellington rapper Name UL is back, along with the always engaging Same Name Confusion, synth-maestro Dayle Jellyman, dream pop songwriter Nikita 雅涵 Tu-Bryant and rising alt-pop artist RIIKI. Usually a band of seven musicians, Dr Reknaw will present a special stripped back solo set, and Maori world-roots performer Māmā Mihirangi will also perform solo. The Ping Pong Party People will wrap up the night with a 90s trance party that’ll scratch your dancing itch. A special thanks goes to WellingtonNZ and the Wellington City Council for their support on this initiative and making Go Home Stay Home possible. CubaDupa is encouraging viewers to donate to MusicHelps, the New Zealand charity that provides vital support to members of the New Zealand music community in times of illness, distress and hardship. There will be a donate button on the Go Home Stay Home live stream for viewers to contribute to MusicHelps. • • Good Keen Men at Suite

    • Suite will show work by nine of New Zealand’s most-loved male artists from Wednesday 18 February 2009. Good keen men features John Gully, Theo Schoon, Bill Hammond, Keith Morant, Nigel Brown, Robin Morrison, Henry Winkelmann, George Chance and E. Mervyn Taylor. The exhibition shows rarely-seen works by many of the artists. Highlights include two Bill Hammond works on paper for the mid 1970s and two large vintage silver gelatine prints by Henry Winkelmann, a pioneer of New Zealand photography. Two mid-career Morrison works, from his ‘Images of a House’ and ‘Thorndon’ series juxtapose early 20th century photographer George Chance’s landscape work. Chance is known as a bestselling pictorialist photographer of his day. Good Keen Men runs from Wednesday 18 February to Saturday 7 March 2009.

    • Operation Details Date/Time:  Mon, 13/02/2012 - 14:40 - 15:30 Operation Type:  SAROP Cat 1 People Assisted:  0 Total Volunteer Hours:  7 I diver was reported as missing south of Mana Island near Makara Beach. Coastguard Mana activated a callout but were stood down at 15:30, just as we were about to depart Mana Marina, as the diver had been located safe and well. A vessel had dropped off the diver at 12:30 and then went to a different location, due to return and pick them up at 13:20. When the vessel returned they couldn't locate the diver and started a search, calling Police by phone. Mihi nui kia <> First event Wednesday, at Whitireia Welcome back to another year of orienteering! We’re kicking things off this Wednesday with our afterwork sprints, part of our College Sport Wellington (CSW) Series, which will be followed by forest and farm orienteering in March. Although CSW events are aimed at getting school students orienteering, don’t be put off by the name—courses are open to everyone, and we’d love to see you there. A big thank you to our course planner, Ali Power, and our controller, Sarah O’Sullivan, for knocking our first sprint into shape at Whitireia Campus in Porirua. AGM highlights Congratulations to Morag McLellan, who took out the Endeavour Cup for development, and to Helen Hughes for receiving the Fortune Cup for outstanding service to the club! Beverley Holder was welcomed as the new President of Orienteering Wellington, taking over from Paul Teesdale-Spittle, who has dedicated many years to leading the club. Beverley has been deeply involved, most recently helping steer a successful Oceania organising committee. Draft minutes from the AGM 2024 will soon be available on the website Morag McLellan Helen Hughes Wellington makes waves at Oceania Oceania was a fantastic event, with over 700 orienteers from both sides of the Tasman and further enjoying beautiful courses at Massey University (sprint) and Santoft forest maps of Koitiata (middle), Knottingly (long), and Parewanui (relay). Orienteering Wellington members achieved some impressive results, especially Lizzie Ingham, who reigned supreme by taking first in Women’s 21E for the Sprint, Middle, and Long events. Jake McLellan also shone with a second place in M20E Sprint and Long courses, and both he and Rachel Baker were part of the New Zealand junior teams that won their Trans-Tasman relay competitions. Orienteering Wellington can be proud of hosting a brilliant event for all. A huge thank you to our wonderful volunteers, particularly Helen Hughes, who wrangled the volunteers to ensure everything ran seamlessly each day. 2025 subscriptions now due Members attending the AGM resolved to raise subscriptions by 20% to cover Orienteering New Zealand levies—our first increase in quite some time! Subscriptions for 2025 are now due and invoices have been sent. Please email Anna Varnham if any of the following apply. You’re ready to become a member.
