    • Te Aro Eats - Uniting Kai Communities at CubaDupa
      • After overwhelmingly positive feedback and a heck of a good time, in 2023, Te Aro Eats: Uniting Kai Communities is back for its second year at CubaDupa! Te Aro Eats is a collaborative and interactive dining experience where you are invited to connect with fellow diners, volunteer in the meal mahi, and take time to enjoy the delicious kai that has been created to show what is possible when we mahi together. Brought to life by the volunteers and staff at Seeds to Feeds, Everybody Eats, The Free Store, Wellington Timebank, Kaibosh Food Rescue, and with the support of Kaicycle, BGI (Wellington Boys and Girls Institute), Neighbours Aotearoa, Commonsense Organics and Wellington City Council. Saturday: 12 pm - 2 pm | 4 pm - 6 pm Sunday: 12 pm - 2 pm Each session open to all This meal is designed to showcase how our community-focused organisations operate and welcome volunteers. This will be inclusive (easily catering to vegetarians, vegans, gluten intolerances, and allergies), and created to share the story of our kai and our people. Admission is by koha, either monetary or with time or resources towards the mahi. While dining you will be encouraged to meet the guests dining with you, to connect and share stories. We will have activities that create moments of fun, excitement and conversation. We can not wait to welcome you into this special space and share some delicious community kai with you.

    • Dinghy adrift as storm approaches
      • Operation Details Date/Time:  Tue, 04/03/2014 - 13:30 - 17:00 Operation Type:  SAROP Cat 1 People Assisted:  2 Total Volunteer Hours:  21 Police were alerted to a 4m runabout adrift somewhere offshore to the west of Mana Island after breaking down. Communications were via a mobile phone and once Coastguard Mana were dispatched it was determined that they were in fact closer to Hunters Bank near Pukerua Bay. At the same time a severe southerly storm was approaching Wellington. CRV Trust Porirua Rescue with 5 crew members initially had difficulty locating them due to the inaccuracy of the location information given by the people on the boat. They were contacted via telephone and advised that we would release a white parachute flare to help them determine where we were in relation to them. This helped to refine the estimated position meaning that TPR could close in on the area the boat was drifting. Once closer they were advised by the Coastguard Master to activate an orange smoke flare. This was immediately spotted by the CRV crew approximately 3NM away and as they closed in on the smoke they spotted the vessel. The two men on board were getting cold but otherwise well. The fact that they had a means of communication and flares certainly saved them from a potentially disasterous situation as a southerly storm was moving up the country and expected to arrive within an hour or two. • We had our 1st game on the new {Porirua} turf on Sunday and came away with a 2 - 0 win against YWCA! The new turf is very bouncy, is like playing on shag pile carpet! Hopefully will settle down after some use! A great goal scored by Sonja Jeffs on the left wing, was in the right spot at the right time for a beautiful cross from the right and nicely swept in! 2nd goal was a great deflection into the goal by Chrissy Potaka Kelly after a hit to the 'spot'! Good work by the Team! Lisa

    • Gale Whips Up Entries
      • Would you believe another record entry - and after a day of gale force winds! In fact the winds died down right on cue as participants were set off four by four on Tony van Dyk's course at Silverstream Retreat. Constrained by the need to cross under a busy road, the course was nevertheless similar to last week - a two-loop micr-o on the Hutt riverbank followed by common third loop through the buildings (ancient and modern) of the retreat. This offered significant route choice so it wasn't just follow the leader, even for those groups which were closely matched.

    • Rogaine Runs from Lambton Quay
      • A really bizarre feeling starting last night's rogaine in downtown Wellington beside the pubbers, and battling the traffic lights on the outward legs. But of course Tinakori Hill and Ngaio Gorge are only minutes away. The event run out of the Norsewear shop on Lambton Quay by adventure racing "Team Norsewear" was won by Bill Edwards in spite of a fading headlamp.

"I estimate if I start jogging over there on Monday morning I should just make the Wednesday lunch time game" said Hall "but my real concern is after a bit of a run around will I get back to the office by Friday evening".

    • Supreme and Enduring Awards
      • Two central Wellington buildings have won awards at the NZIA’s national awards ceremony in Auckland, according to the Dompost. Both of them are pretty fantastic, and have won awards before - there’s the new Conservation House by Architecture + (completed only a year or so ago) and then there is Massey House by Cedric Firth and Ernest Plishke, some 50 years before.

    • What’s a punga?
      • “Punga” is a quintessential Kiwi word, used to refer to tree ferns or, sometimes more specifically, the trunks of tree ferns.  But, no tree ferns were recorded by James Beever in his book A Dictionary of Maori Plant Names as being called punga by Māori.  I don’t know for sure, but I suspect that “punga” [...]

      • Te Papa's forecourt may look as if it's under attack by giant glittery space balls, but it's actually the start of a two-year kinetic sculpture installation called "The Mimetic Brotherhood", by Peter Trevelyan. There's not much kinesis evident at the moment, but once the installation is complete, expect the plinth-eating monsters to start pulsating in their full hydraulic glory.

    • Pay for play is here
      • t’s pay for play time. Parents, bring your cheque books. John Morrison and colleagues delay a positive vote on artificial pitches by three months and end up with one pitch, part funded by the private sector, meaning low income families may not be able to afford for their kids to play with the rich kids. At least it’s a result:
