Mihi nui kia <> First event Wednesday, at Whitireia Welcome back to another year of orienteering! We’re kicking things off this Wednesday with our afterwork sprints, part of our College Sport Wellington (CSW) Series, which will be followed by forest and farm orienteering in March. Although CSW events are aimed at getting school students orienteering, don’t be put off by the name—courses are open to everyone, and we’d love to see you there. A big thank you to our course planner, Ali Power, and our controller, Sarah O’Sullivan, for knocking our first sprint into shape at Whitireia Campus in Porirua. AGM highlights Congratulations to Morag McLellan, who took out the Endeavour Cup for development, and to Helen Hughes for receiving the Fortune Cup for outstanding service to the club! Beverley Holder was welcomed as the new President of Orienteering Wellington, taking over from Paul Teesdale-Spittle, who has dedicated many years to leading the club. Beverley has been deeply involved, most recently helping steer a successful Oceania organising committee. Draft minutes from the AGM 2024 will soon be available on the website Morag McLellan Helen Hughes Wellington makes waves at Oceania Oceania was a fantastic event, with over 700 orienteers from both sides of the Tasman and further enjoying beautiful courses at Massey University (sprint) and Santoft forest maps of Koitiata (middle), Knottingly (long), and Parewanui (relay). Orienteering Wellington members achieved some impressive results, especially Lizzie Ingham, who reigned supreme by taking first in Women’s 21E for the Sprint, Middle, and Long events. Jake McLellan also shone with a second place in M20E Sprint and Long courses, and both he and Rachel Baker were part of the New Zealand junior teams that won their Trans-Tasman relay competitions. Orienteering Wellington can be proud of hosting a brilliant event for all. A huge thank you to our wonderful volunteers, particularly Helen Hughes, who wrangled the volunteers to ensure everything ran seamlessly each day. 2025 subscriptions now due Members attending the AGM resolved to raise subscriptions by 20% to cover Orienteering New Zealand levies—our first increase in quite some time!     • Operation Details Date/Time:  Wed, 28/12/2011 - 20:30 - Thu, 29/12/2011 - 01:30 Operation Type:  SAROP Cat 1 People Assisted:  3 Total Volunteer Hours:  50 Assisted a Cavilier 45', 18 tonne, yacht with mechanical problems off Mana Island to get to safe mooring. Vessel located and towed to mooring behind Mana Island. Moored off and mechanic taken on board the following morning of 29/12. Engine successfully started. No further support required. Actual time (5 hrs) was split across two days, but is reported as a single block here.     • Operation Details Date/Time:  Sat, 30/03/2013 - 12:25 - 16:30 Operation Type:  SAROP Cat 1 People Assisted:  3 Total Volunteer Hours:  28 Three divers went missing from a group of five during a dive near the south end of Kapiti Island. The dive boat they were with lost track of their bubbles, and they weren't towing a marker buoy, after they were swept away from the dive area via strong currents. They surfaced together later and were swept further away from the area and the boat. Coastguard Mana was dispatched to assist in the search alongside Coastguard Kapiti and Westpac Rescue helicopter.     • Operation Details Date/Time:  Fri, 14/06/2019 - 08:10 - 11:00 Operation Type:  SAROP Cat 1 People Assisted:  0 Total Volunteer Hours:  2 Mana Rescue 1 with 3 x crew responded to a report from police of a red kayak drifting in Pukerua Bay, no sighting of any persons on board. Contact made with Police SAR doing area observations and a parallel track and directed trackline search assisted in locating a "fishng kayak" look-a-like log. The job shows the importance of  reports from the public and that usingt 111 to report when concerned for someone's safety is always a good thing to do.     • Operation Details Date/Time:  Tue, 05/01/2021 - 11:00 - 15:00 Operation Type:  SAROP Cat 1 People Assisted:  2 Total Volunteer Hours:  16 7m runabout had steering failure whilst anchored up diving/fishing on the west coast near Boom Rock. They called CG Radio and gave their location as Titahi Bay. MR1 responded and was unable to locate the vessel anywhere in the Titahi Bay area and their phone was out of coverage. Escalated to Police to assist with enquiring about their location (as we had no way of contacting them). Police eventually managed to get a call connected long enough for them to say 4km south of Titahi Bay. We found them 3.6NM (6.6km) south of Titahi Bay and towed them home to Mana Marina.     • A big turnout from our guests, Hutt Valley Harriers, which boosted numbers to well over one hundred for this event. Jack Julian continues his success in the B9 grade, winning the 1km race. Josh Nairne won the 2km race, just sneaking under 8 minutes. In race 3, our scratch runner Miles Coverdale ran through to take line honours, one second ahead of walker Andrea Adams. In the 4km event, both of the Lynches ran fastest times in their grades - Susannah the fastest junior woman for the third year in a row, and Aaron the fastest junior man. Jo Doherty was fastest woman, and both walkers walked the same time. In the 8km race, Matt Rogers from Hutt Valley Harriers was two minutes faster than the next fastest runner.

Light was fading by this stage and finding the dinghy in the dark was very difficult as they did not have any form of lighting or signalling equipment with them, no VHF, and their cellphone battery was dying - an all too common occurance!     • During the month of August, Stokes Valley Volunteer Fire Brigade responded to a total of 13 incidents.  We attended six fires, from the very small (a smoking light-fixture) to the extremely large "4th Alarm" factory fire in Petone on the 23rd August.  We also attended four medical emergencies during the month and there were three false alarms. Even with another fairly significant (magnitute 6.6) earthquake on 16th August, the Wellington region seemenly dodged another bullet and the brigade had absolutely no earthquake-related incidents to attend to.  Let's keep our fingers crossed that that remains the case for many, many years to come! MR1 with 5 x crew responded Sea conditions were very rough and confused, wind gusting 45 knots, breaking seas of 2.5-3.5 metres in the navigation channel and the route to Titahi Bay. A call was made to CG Mana base to not send MR2 on the tasks as the seas were to dangerous for the smaller CRV. MR1 carried out a barrier patrol and creeping line search of the S.A.D area. Nothing was located Search was called off by Police. They made the decision to abandon the return leg from Mana Island and took shelter on the island, calling Coastguard for assistance. They left their vessel anchored just off shore and swam to the beach where they waited. We nosed up on the gravel beach and picked them up. After ensuring they were in good health and providing them blankets to warm up, we approached the vessel near rocks and hooked the anchor line, pulling it up and out to deeper water. Shoreline searches were performed around the whole of Mana Island and all the way down the West coast as far as Makara Beach, while Titahi Bay Surf Lifesaving Club covered the shoreline and immediate area around Titahi Bay. Sea conditions were very rough with 1-2m waves and up to 30 knots of NW wind (slightly less than the previous day). If no appeals are received by 25 September 2020 on the resource consent decision, GWRC will issue the applicant the consent certificates.Recommendation on the Notice of Requirement to UHCC The Committee have made a recommendation that the Notice of Requirement be approved under section 171 of the Act. This recommendation is to the Upper Hutt City as requiring authority. The Upper Hutt City Council will make a decision within the next 30 working days under section 172 of the Act as to whether to accept or reject the recommendation. This extends from the Pinehaven Reserve to the inlet where the Pinehaven Stream is piped to the Hulls Creek.The purpose of the works is to reduce flood risk from the Pinehaven Stream to the surrounding area. The works will increase the capacity of the stream and its tributaries to a 1 in 25 year return period, reduce risk of injury or harm from flood flows, integrate overland flow paths into the stormwater network, and enable efficient and effective construction and ongoing maintenance of the structures.The proposal includes changes to the Pinehaven Stream channel and crossing structures in the lower reaches to provide for a 25-year channel capacity. MSP have recruited well this season particularly in the backs and welcomed some Hurricanes experience in the Proctor brothers to the starting line-up. It was old-timers day for MSP and a fair few of the older members had turned out to their clubrooms to preload! Conditions The weather was fine with the wind blowing diagonally down the pitch from the north into the south-eastern corner where the field dips away a little. the sun was low in the first half and difficult for OBU to deal with playing into it from the southeastern corner. It would be even worse for MSP in the second half. OBU was playing from Gym end toward the road in the first half. John ‘JC’ Cable & Jaesen Sumner were kindly present to keep an eye on the play while I wrestled with the screen lock on my phone. We are positioned up beside the video platform on the northern side. Notable performances The front row was mighty but didn’t really get the rewards it may have felt entitled to. The lineout applied lots of pressure and caused plenty of mistakes from MSP Paddy Carter was immense around the field. He is becoming a valuable utility player covering locks and flanks and is certainly a lineout option with outstanding aerial skills whichever position he is in. Shamus and Caleb deserve a mention every week. Hardworking, rugged and abrasive all over the park. In the backs, Sam Reid was once again rock-solid barely making a mistake. Ty Poe is a consistent performer growing each week. Callum and Dale are a great pairing of skill, speed and determination. Kyle really stood up in this match and had several classy touches including the chip and regather for the try. How the game unfolded 2 mins The tone for the match was set early scrum-wise by OBU. A powerful shunt spoilt the MSP feed which resulted in a knock-on in the backline due to the backfoot ball. 5 mins A series of pick and goes near the MSP line in the left corner resulted in a penalty to OBU. Dale steps up and nails the shot on the 22m line about 15 in from the left touchline OBU 3-0 6 mins From the kick-off there is a penalty for a high shot on Paddy. The penalty kick doesn’t find touch. The kick is followed up well enough to pressure MSP whop are finally able to clear to the touch after a couple of minor wobbles. 9 mins MSP manages to get it wide to their left side close to the touchline in front of us. The MSP player makes a great burst upfield but eventually, it breaks down and we go back to the penalty the ref was playing advantage for. The shot is successfully taken from 35 metres out and just to the right of the posts. 3-3 13 mins MSP puts up an up and under (or ‘Gary Owen’ for the northerners), then they regain at the ensuing ruck and the halfback chips downfield. Sam Reid has no choice but to run it into touch near our line on the far side of the paddock. From the lineout MSP throw is not straight so OBU gets to clear from the scrum. Pressure diffused for now. 17 mins MSP sets up a driving maul from a lineout but OBU gets the drive on. The maul breaks up with MSP players in behind our forwards. MSP flanker and halfback both have a dab at the line but it’s the right-winger who busts through for the score. The conversion misses. MSP 8-3 20 mins OBU charge down an MSP clearing kick. Ty Poe claims the loose ball and scores it under the sticks. The conversion was successful. OBU 10-8 23 mins A great move from OBU down the left-hand side of the field, Shamus makes lots of ground commits the defence and sets Paddy for the pass but it goes behind Paddy. MSP runs it out. There is a brief altercation. The Assistant Referee puts his flag out and a discussion ensues with the ref. The referee calls the captains together and presumably issues a warning to both teams to keep it clean despite what looked like a punch thrown by the red player. 24 mins Kyle darts down the blindside and chips past the first line of defence. He regathers under pressure from 3 defenders and scoots the rest of the way down the far sideline to score it in the corner. Conversion unsuccessful. OBU 15-8 28 mins Shamus crashes through the defence with some good pace and offloads to Finbarr. Reece ratchets up the pressure with an attack down the close touchline. OBU is right on the MSP goal line but are penalised. Can’t tell from our position what it was for. Unfortunately, someone says something to the ref so we deservedly get marched 10 metres. 30 mins OBU is in MSPs half again and looking likely but are penalised for holding on in the tackle. Good play from MSP flanker to beat the cleaners to the ball. MSP kick into the far corner. From the lineout MSP over-throw the ball and Kyle makes a great 40-meter clearance. 39 mins MSP is penalised for backs offside. Callum steps up to have a long-range shot from just inside the MSP half and out to the left. Kick misses Halftime OBU 15-8 41 mins MSP on the attack, OBU backs are caught offside 35 metres out and slightly to the right of the posts. Kick landed OBU 15-11 46 mins A long sequence of pick and goes on the MSP line. An MSP player crashes over the top believing he is onside and concedes a very obvious penalty. Dale successfully takes the shot. OBU 18-11 49 mins OBU concede a penalty for holding near the 10-metre line straight out in front. Kick is successfully taken. OBU 18-14 52 mins Paddy claims the kickoff with a memorable AFL-style leap. 55 mins OBU move the ball wide to Sam Reid who slips through the first tackle but can’t get through the second and eventually the ball runs into touch. MSP again overthrow the lineout. Morgan tries to gather the ball but knocks it on. MSP feed to the scrum. 57 mins MSP manages to clear the scrum which is under pressure and begin a promising period of attack near the OBU line. OBU player gest over the ball and wins the penalty which is cleared to touch taking some of the pressure off but we lose the lineout. Matt Fowler makes it on for his 50th replacing Kyle Preston at the base of the scrum. Sam Godwin on James Poloniati Off 60 mins A great driving maul from OBU. Eventually, MSP concedes the penalty and OBU elects to kick to the corner. Another great driving maul and an MSP forward rolls the dice by dropping it and gets away with it this time. Eventually, OBU knocks the ball forward. 63 mins MSP clear their line from a massive kick by James Proctor playing at 2nd 5. He kicked from the 5-meter line and the ball eventually goes out just on OBUs side of halfway. 66 mins Almost an action replay with another great clearing kick from Proctor. 73 mins MSP are hot on the attack and looking dangerous. There is an OBU player down. It turns out to be Matt Fowler in his 50th. Kyle comes on to replace him as a precaution. Morgan comes back on sporting a bandage on his head. I missed where he went off! Sam Coombs leaves the field. Taine Plumtree is replaced by Josh Gimblett 75 mins There is a series of Pick and goes on our line. Eventually #19 James Tuia crashes over. Conversion unsuccessful. MSP 19-18 75 mins Sam Coombs is on for Finbarr Kerr-Newell and somewhere along the way Matt Sleith came on at hooker for Kenan Gillson. OBU just need to hold the ball and work it back up the field to get in position to pressure MSP into a mistake. OBU puts the drive on from a lineout but the ball is knocked on. 78 mins OBU desperate now tries to run it out to the other end of the field but MSP turn the ball over in our 22 and the 1st 5 for MSP lines up and slots the drop goal. MSP 22-18 That’s the way the match ended. A riveting game with a very tight finish. I get the feeling that this match could well be replayed over the coming weeks in a semi or a final, but let’s not count our chickens just yet. Another almighty challenge awaits against Tawa out at Lyndhurst Park next week. Outdoor Education This week Year 11 students have been out on the water to Makaro (Ward Island).     • Operation Details Date/Time:  Wed, 30/12/2020 - 12:00 - 12:30 Operation Type:  SAROP Cat 1 People Assisted:  1 Total Volunteer Hours:  3 Whilst returning with a tow job to Plimmerton Boating Club we heard a mayday relay on CH16 from MOC advising vessels in the area of Owhiro Bay that there was a missing/overdue diver in the water, requesting assistance to search for them.  We contacted Police to see if they wanted our assistance to search the area. They requested us to respond to Owhiro Bay and we quickly returned to Mana Marina to take on more fuel and pick up some extra crew.  Whilst preparing to depart we were stood down because the diver was located on shore safe and well.     • Operation Details Date/Time:  Thu, 09/02/2012 - 16:30 - 16:45 Operation Type:  SAROP Cat 1 People Assisted:  2 Total Volunteer Hours:  1 Two swimmers were caught in the tidal flow exiting the channel into Porirua Harbour on an outgoing tide. This pushed them out of the channel entrance towards Goat Point. The swimmers were spotted waving and screaming for assistance and Coastguard Mana was activated by Police to assist. A training crew was already onboard Trust Porirua Rescue in the marina, engines fired up and ready to depart on a training excercise, when the call came through. They were able to depart immediately and were on scene within 3 minutes of the call from Police. The pair finished first and second in the Junior Girls’ National Secondary Schools’ Cross Country Championships at the A&P Showgrounds in Hawera. Sutherland hadn’t beaten McHardy this year, but saved her best for the big stage. “Amy got in front before me. I was running and I was like ‘come on Amy, let’s go, we’re nearly there.’ I think I got a bit of adrenaline or something. I wasn’t expecting to win” Sutherland admitted. McHardy had led all the way. “We both like to take the start and it was a really fast start. We got to the front after about 600 meters. When there was 30-meters to go Ava said ‘well done’ and got past me. We work together, train together and bring out the best in each other. We managed to win the three-person and six-person team races as well which was awesome,” McHardy said. The final time for Sutherland was 11.25.50 with McHardy on 11.27.80. Gabrielle Healy (6th) and Kate McHardy (9th) ensured a Wellington Girls’ sweep of junior honours. A flat start was followed by a downhill section that narrowed out and a short, treacherous, hill climb due to the thick mud and driving rain. “It was really wet and muddy but that made it fun, a real cross country race, a real cool experience,” McHardy enthused. Louise Brabyn (Whanganui Collegiate) was seven seconds adrift in third place. “My favourite training course has eight river crossings and is really fun in the rain. I liked the course,” Sutherland concurred. Both girls are aligned with the Olympic Harriers club. They train and compete in a mixed environment on Tuesday and Thursday nights at Nairnville Park as well as racing most weekends. McHardy beat Sutherland for the Wellington Regional title, but both rely upon coach John Cope for their success. “He makes sure we enjoy it, but when it gets close to competition he challenges us and makes sure we’re putting in the grind,” McHardy said. McHardy first met Cope when she made the Wellington Interregional team while at intermediate. She was fifth in the 2019 Nationals in Timaru and has been the top junior runner in the capital. Sutherland’s parents are eager runners and their daughter got serious about it in 2018. “I had a long-time rival who kept beating me at intermediate. When I beat her the first time I continued to put a lot more effort into it, Sutherland revealed. The next big race on the calendar is the National Secondary Schools’ Road Race in Akaroa, Christchurch in October. • • OBU Premiers off to flying start

    • The Goats got their season off to a flying start today, eventually running out 35-13 winners on a hard and fast track reminiscent of a dustbowl at times! A hand-picked panel of experts on the sideline selected centurion Augustin Escalona as the player of the day for some outstanding defence around the rucks and mauls, great work in the loose and for being a key part of an impressive scrum and lineout. There were several new goats that got some dust on their hooves today with Caleb Delaney, Seamus Langton and Reece Plumtree all having great debuts. There were a few injuries but hopefully not serious enough to hinder selection for next weeks match against last years runners-up Norths at home in Porirua. In the early game, the Premier Reserve Goats were unlucky to pull up just short 15-12 in the last few minutes. Promising signs for a great season. Next week your normal match reporter will bring his insightful comments direct to you, and for the rest of the season.
