Call-out stats - July 2013
- Stokes Valley Volunteer Fire Brigade
- Despite the Wellington region being rocked by a strong 6.5 magnitude earthquake on 21st July, Stokes Valley Volunteer Fire Brigade attended less than half the number of call-outs in July than in June. The storm that hit the region back in June kept the brigade much busier than the recent earthquake did, which, in a funny kind of way, is probably a good thing (considering the utter devastation that the people down in Canterbury have had to deal with). The brigade were called out to just two earthquake-related incidents, including one to Hutt Hospital.

Welcomes and Congratulations
- Amesbury Drive School Blog
- Welcome back to term 3. It was lovely to see all the smiling faces as students arrived at school yesterday. I hope everyone managed to enjoy their holidays and have begun the term feeling refreshed and ready for a HUGE term of learning. We are excited about this term. Our student achievement data from terms 1 and 2 is looking pretty good. However, as a staff, we met yesterday to discuss how we can continue to improve the achievement of our students over the next two terms.

Another first he achieved was gaining a New Zealand Post-Graduate Scholarship in Architecture. The next year he headed to Birmingham to PhD study and private practice, returning in 1978 as a Reader in Architectural History at VUW, having completed his PhD (1975) and edited the MIT Press publication: The Open Hand: Essays on Le Corbusier (1977), an early collection of essays on Le Corbusier in English. http://www.futunatrust.org.nz/wp-content/header-images/windows.jpg Russell is renowned for his passionate relationship to Futuna Chapel – the subject of his Voices of Silence (1987) – as bicultural architecture.

Earthquake: over-reaction?
- Eye of the Fish
- Whilst I am fully aware that was a nasty series of shakes on Sunday evening, and indeed over the last few days, I’m very disappointed in the over-reaction of the media to this seismic event. RadioNZ reported that a building in Featherston St had a collapsed concrete facade – I don’t know about you, but I thought “Crikey! If a concrete facade can collapse, then what about the brick facades in Cuba St!” – and so I set off to find out which building had collapsed. As it turns out, none of them.

New-ish at the Movies: Man of Steel, Everybody Has a Plan and White Lies
- The Wellingtonista
- Man of Steel is a self-consciously epic re-imagining of the Superman story, first told in print in the 1930s and most recently rebooted on screen by Bryan Singer as Superman Returns just prior to the commencement of my reviewing career in 2006.

Theresa Gattung emerging as the Right contender
- WCC Watch
- We have been told by several well placed sources that Kerry Prendergast and the right of Wellington have come to the conclusion that Jo Coughlan is not a contender (as we have been saying for weeks) and that they need a new champion to split between Morrison and Wade-Bicycle.

What does Māori theatre mean to you?
- Downstage Theatre
- “As the tūakana of Māori theatre Taki Rua enjoys a position of acceptance within the wider New Zealand demographic and with that, a responsibility to the Māori community upon which it was built… [this] inevitably brings us to the elephant in the room of what is Māori theatre?” - Maraea Rakuraku (Read the full review here) At the panel discussion held at Downstage on Wed 26 June, Taki Rua Artistic Director James Ashcroft, along with the cast of Sydney Bridge Upside Down discussed with authors Kate de Goldi and Hamish Clayton what Māori Theatre means to him. There will be another panel discussion after the Fri 5 July performance of Sydney Bridge at 9:30pm. What does Māori theatre mean to you? What does New Zealand theatre mean to you? This is a topic which warrants thoughtful discussion in all situations, not just our panel discussion. What is the future of theatre? What responsibilities does it have to its past? What do you hope for its future? Share your thoughts with us, on Facebook, at our Twitter, or by emailing theatre@downstage.co.nz

A processional route past the car yards
- Wellington Scoop
- A long-forgotten plan was dusted off and put back into the city council’s annual plan last week – it’s a plan to plant trees in Taranaki Street, to make it part of a new “processional route.” Taranaki Street was chosen for this honour in 2009 as part of a “capital city initiative” announced by the Prime Minister and then Mayor Kerry Prendergast.
