A flyover at the Basin Reserve? The battle begins on Saturday
- Wellington Scoop
- Saturday is the day when the government’s Transport Agency will tell Wellington how it intends to change the cityscape at the southern end of Kent and Cambridge Terraces. The news has been a long time in coming, but as long ago as 2008 then-mayor Kerry Prendergast said, with approval, that a flyover near the Basin Reserve would be part of the plan. Her successor doesn’t support a flyover. Indeed, the concept has few supporters except for the planners and engineers at the Transport Agency. And though there have been several good alternative proposals, the Agency doesn’t seem willing to consider them.

Let’s not get pwned by the RoNSter
- Architectural Centre Inc
- Save the Basin and Save Kapiti are organising a “Rail Against the Road/Expressway” rally at Parliament on Wednesday July 6th. While most of us in the Centre might not have strong opinions one way or the other on the proposed Kapiti ‘Sandhills’ scheme (?), the issue is nevertheless an important one for a number of reasons. First of all, being played out here is the age-old conflict between nationally identified objectives against local community interests (or destruction thereof). This, of course, has much resonance with our members.

Frustrated, angry, bullied: Kapiti residents say new expressway will trash the district
- Wellington Scoop
- The strength of grass-roots opposition to an expressway through Kapiti is shown in this week’s announcement that residents are planning to march on parliament. The “frustrated and angry” residents aim to target Transport Minister Stephen Joyce, whose Transport Agency is preparing to build the new motorway.

Wgtn 2040
- Architectural Centre Inc
- The Wellington City Council has at last started the process of telling you about WGTN 2040, the proposed Vision for the future – 29 years in the future to be exact. It has been a long time coming – a couple of years at least, but this is one of the most important consultations that the Council has ever asked the Wellington public for their opinion on. We would encourage all Wellingtonians to have some input on this – and we would also like to hear your views, so that we can also table a submission from the Architectural Centre.

It’s too big – council’s former planner opposes new Lambton Quay building

- Till last year he was the Wellington City Council’s respected chief advisor on urban planning. Now he is opposing the council at a resource consent hearing for a huge new Lambton Quay building which would be four storeys higher than the legal height limit. Gerald Blunt – who left the city council last year after more than a decade of distinguished service – has this week been appearing as a consultant for a property company which is objecting to the size of the new building.

Making porridge pancakes: Te Aro Park
- Architectural Centre Inc
- I haven’t been down to the container exhibition of WCC’s Wellington 2040 vision, but am looking forward to doing so soon. What I have seen is the recent post over on EyeoftheFish, which gives us a sneak preview of a small part of the type of outcome that might be expected to emerge from that vision: in this case, a new green space where the Oaks building is currently sited. As the Fish reports, that site has been the subject of many suggestions for ‘improvement,’ some of which are captured in this thread. A particularly intriguing one was the suggestion of a ‘Flatiron’/wedge-shaped building on Te Aro Park, and a park where Oaks currently is – a swap of building for open space and vice versa.

Triangular Parks

- With a brief flurry of media attention last week, and typical fluffy media attention more on Miley Cyrus than the ideas inside, the Wellington 2040 vision was confirmed by a Council meeting. Today, there will be the opening of two container consultation stations (one in Te Aro Park and one on the Waterfront?) which will unveil some of the report. And finally, next week, the public may get a chance to really see what has been proposed.

Marley and the microchip
- Wellington SPCA
- [Show as slideshow] A couple from Porirua are celebrating after being reunited with their dog Marley, one year after she went missing from their property, thanks to a microchip the size of a grain of rice, that we implanted!! The reunion, which took place at our Newtown animal centre, came after Marley was picked up, by chance, by two members of our Animal Rescue Unit (ARU) who spotted the 19 month-old bitch running in amongst traffic on State Highway Two near Petone Bowl. Marley was brought into our care and a quick scan showed that she had a microchip. A call to her registered owners by our Senior Inspector Ben Lakomy confirmed that Marley had been missing since June 2010. At this time, nothing is known of Marley’s whereabouts during the last year, but her physical appearance suggests she may have had a pretty rough time of it. Not only is she is extremely underweight and in very poor body condition, but it would also appear that she has recently had a litter of puppies – attempts by Inspector Lakomy to locate any puppies near to where she was discovered proved unsuccessful. Marley is currently in our care and will remain so until she has gained enough weight and her condition has sufficiently improved for her to go home. Senior Inspector Lakomy said that the successful reunion was perfect testament to the benefits of microchipping your pet. “Getting Marley microchipped was one of the best decisions her owners could have made. She now has the chance to be back with her rightful owners and to be properly cared for once again” he said. We would like to hear from anyone who has information regarding Marley’s disappearance or where she has been since and with whom. Please contact us on 04 389 8044 ext. 812. We strongly recommend that all pets are microchipped. A microchip is an implant that is inserted under the skin of an animal without the need for anesthetic. It is about the size of a grain of rice, is an inert device with no independent power source and does not transmit a signal. All microchips have a unique identification number that is read using a hand held scanner. Microchips are a safe and effective way to identify your pet – you just need to make sure that the chip is registered and your contact details are kept up to date. We offer a microchipping service and anyone interested in getting their pet microchipped should contact them on 04 389 8044 ext. 0 You can read Marley’s story on Stuff.co.nz.

Another Motorway Battle Looms
- Auckland Trains
- Another motorway battle is looming in the Capital. And it’s close to the Greens’ heart. A plan to ram a motorway through Hataitai may affect among others, Greens co-leader Russel Norman as he lives in Hataitai. And it could be another big test for the Wellington’s Greens’ Mayor. The NZTA plans to duplicate the Mt Victoria Tunnel and put a four lane motorway through Hataitai which Norman says would be bad for everyone.

Stellar
- Eye of the Fish
- In contrast to the Stalla building proposed for lower Taranaki St, just a few days before that was announced, another building appeared in the property press, bound for Victoria St. This other building, seemingly only known as 101 Victoria St at present, is higher though – double the height in fact – yes, not 11, but a cool 22 storeys high. Interestingly, that’s still about 5m short of the height limit in the Victoria St “high city” height limit. Still, as it reaches for the stars, I’m going to christen it Stellar. I hope they don’t mind.
