The 2013 Hilton Petone tournament certainly gave us the opportunity to put our plans into practice. <p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height: normal"><span lang="EN-NZ" style="mso-fareast-font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;color:#222222;mso-fareast-language:EN-NZ">Our group consisted of our neighbours - Island Bay, North Wellington under 19's and our bogey team of last season, Kapiti Coast United.  <p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height: normal"><span lang="EN-NZ" style="mso-fareast-font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;color:#222222;mso-fareast-language:EN-NZ">Game one against KCU saw us fall behind inside two minutes, but the remaining 43 minutes of the first half were all BNU. A first half hat-trick by Simon Barker and debut goal from Ben Purser saw us take a 4-1 lead into the break, playing some fantastic one touch football through midfield and the strikers making the most of quality delivery. Unfortunately we let KCU back into the game in the second half, eventually showing maturity and composure to hold on to a 5-4 win. 3 points in the bag - but plenty to work on. <p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height: normal"><span lang="EN-NZ" style="mso-fareast-font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;color:#222222;mso-fareast-language:EN-NZ">Game two versus neighbours Island Bay saw us score early through left back Ali Luke, who had made a lung-bursting run to finish at the far post. Island Bay scrapped and battled for possession throughout the first half, earning a brace of goals, leaving both sides even at 2-2 at the break. The message at halftime was to up the tempo and keep the ball for longer periods, which we did with some success. The bench contributed to the eventual result with Ben Goodwin grabbing a brace within three minutes and Paul Clune tapping in from a yard out to grab his first goal of the year. BNU running out 6-3 winners and cementing a quarter final spot as one of the top two in the group. <p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height: normal"><span lang="EN-NZ" style="mso-fareast-font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;color:#222222;mso-fareast-language:EN-NZ">Our last group game was against hapless North Wellington, who had struggled to compete in their previous two games. We used the opportunity to try some fringe players and see how they fit into the first team. A fast start saw us 4-0 up within 20 minutes. Simon Barker grabbing another first half hat-trick. Paul Sanchez, Ben Goodwin and Ali Luke all scoring to give us a 6-0 advantage at half time. We took the opportunity to make further changes and our second half performance didn't match that of the first. Final score 6-1, still searching for that 90 minute performance. <p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height: normal"><span lang="EN-NZ" style="mso-fareast-font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;color:#222222;mso-fareast-language:EN-NZ">Finishing top of the group gave us a quarter final draw against Tawa. Having played Tawa twice last season in the league we knew how they would play and went into the game feeling confident of getting a result. A tight first half, with few opportunities saw us go into the break 1-0 up after a cross-cum-shot from Tom McCann found its way into the back of the net. The celebration from Big Tom certainly was more stylish than the goal! Half time gave us the chance to sit down and regroup. Keeping our composure and not playing at their level was the message. The second half was all one way traffic in favour of BNU. 4 second half goals to that man Simon Barker and a free kick from Ben Keat saw us run out 6-1 in a fantastic second half performance. The lads played extremely well and had earned the right to take on Victoria University in the semi final. <p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height: normal"><span lang="EN-NZ" style="mso-fareast-font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;color:#222222;mso-fareast-language:EN-NZ">Throughout the week, the lads were up for the challenge, looking forward to what would surely be a sterner test of our ability. However, this wasn't to be our day. We struggled to find any rhythm and as a consequence we didn't string together many threatening passages of play. 2-0 down at half time, we felt we could get something out of the game, but needed to be next to score. We didn't and the game ran away from us. 4-0 at full time, a painful way to exit the tournament. <p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height: normal"><span lang="EN-NZ" style="mso-fareast-font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;color:#222222;mso-fareast-language:EN-NZ">Despite the loss to University, the positives certainly outweigh the negatives. Learning a new shape, the tempo we are trying to play, and the attitude of the players were all fantastic. The disappointment after the semi final loss, also showed that this team expect more and are determined to compete at the right end of the league table this season.  <p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height: normal"><span lang="EN-NZ" style="mso-fareast-font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;color:#222222;mso-fareast-language:EN-NZ">We welcome new signings in Paul Sanchez, Tom McCann, Jimmy Greenwood, George Frost and Ben Purser who all made a great impact during the tournament. There are other new signings who are getting game time with the reserves, who look to have the ability to play for the first team at some point during the 2013 season. <p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height: normal"><span lang="EN-NZ" style="mso-fareast-font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;color:#222222;mso-fareast-language:EN-NZ">Our returning players, recognising the strength of the 2013 squad really stood up during the tournament. Simon Barker, bagging 10 goals in 4 games, Ali Luke making up for last year’s injury-plagued season played well in every game, Ben Keat spraying some quality ball from midfield and captain Andy Cochrane leading from the front, providing the energy and drive through midfield. <p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height: normal"><span lang="EN-NZ" style="mso-fareast-font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;color:#222222;mso-fareast-language:EN-NZ">While we didn't make it all the way to the final, it is the first time in 10 years BNU made it to the semi final stage of the Hilton Petone. We will continue to improve and ultimately be judged for where we finish in the league. If this tournament is anything to go by, we are a team worth watching. Thanks to all who came supported us during the tournament, your support is greatly appreciated. <p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height: normal"><span lang="EN-NZ" style="mso-fareast-font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;color:#222222;mso-fareast-language:EN-NZ">Cheers, Dene

    • 2012 Wellington Masters Tournament
      •   Grand Masters no Flash in the pan!   BNU were unbeaten and won the Men's 45+ grade, retaining their title from last year in the Wellington Masters Football Tournament. After taking on Westy's Wanderers, Karori Fossils, and Island Bay, they went on to beat Team Taranaki 1-0 in the final.   BNU 45+ team with their trophy   Pretenders Pretend to come Second   When the ref asked if they were the other BNU women's team BNU Pretenders owned up, but suggested perhaps she'd like to swap the names round at the end. However they didn't expect to get reported as coming second in the final: From Wellington Masters website: "Wellington United Straddlers claimed the title with a 2-0 win over BNU Pretenders in the final - well done the Straddlers!" To set the record straight it was the other BNU women's team who came second, well done! BNU Pretenders drew the "last place final" in a well-contested 0-0 match against a Petone team who had got stuck into the bubbly as a warm up. The game ended in a bloodbath when Naomi went up for a header and connected with a Petone player's nose. I hope it's not broken Tracey!   Big thanks to the club, who subsidised all four teams' entry fees - a sign that BNU looks after its members not only during the season.

    • Club Opening Day 2012
      • Congratulations to all those involved in the Club Opening Day on Sunday April 1st - it was a lot of fun. We had the whole of Wakefield Park booked out for all of Sunday morning and it was a great chance for club members to get to know each other a bit better. In all, we had 8 of our 16 teams represented (Women's 1st, 2nd and Pretenders, Men's 1st, Pilsner, Pints, and Masters Red, & Black) plus invited teams from 3 other clubs (Karori, Stop Out, and Island Bay). We also had approximately 20 kids from our Junior Club who participated in a session of coaching supplied by our first team coaches Dene and Elliott, as well as a few others from the Senior Club who also gave their time. Thanks to Ian Paterson, the Chairman of the Junior Club, and everyone else involved with the Juniors. The final two games on the turf involved our 1st teams. Our Women unfortunately lost 5-1 to Karori (but they bounced straight back the following weekend with a fabulous 1-0 win over Marist). Our Men's 1st team played Island Bay's reserve team (both in Division 1) and had a resounding 4-0 victory - a great all-round performance. Unfortunately the committee game was a bit one-sided and Island Bay won 4-1, but it seemed that not all their players were on their committee - or come to that, even from Island Bay! But it was played in great spirits and Richard Reid, the CEO of Capital Football, was generous enough to give up some of his Sunday morning to referee the game - his efforts were much appreciated. The game will further strengthen the great working relationship that we have with Island Bay. Finally, whilst many people deserve to be thanked for their efforts in making the Club Opening Day such a success, a special mention has to go to Dave Hughes (recovering from knee surgery) who spent 4 hours solid doing a superb job of serving up tasty morsels from our sausage sizzle - thanks Dave. We on the committee are looking forward to an exciting season ahead for all our teams. Thanks to everyone involved for getting it off to such a great start. Martin Gray

    • BNU Gym has been sold
      • The gym was sold on Monday to the Brooklyn Smallbore Riffle Club. Proceeds will be set aside for a development project that benefits the club. This project must have a business plan and be approved by club members. Members should come along to the AGM in October to find out more.

    • BNU Inaugural Annual Bingo Night
      • Where to start? Probably at the beginning. MC Regan Dooley kicked off the evening setting out the plans for the night to a small but tight group of BNU club members and off-siders. It was to be a busy night with not only three action packed rounds of bingo to get through but also the inaugural BNU Zimmerframe Shootout and inaugural BNU Arm-Wrestling Championships. There were also 24 raffles plus a competition for the best dressed pensioner. And what would a bingo night be without the requisite meat pack raffle? Demand far outstripped supply for the first round of bingo with half the room missing out on a card. A riot was only narrowly avoided by the promise of a rationing of cards for rounds 2 and 3. Big Mo had the honour as first guest caller for the night and Sandy Aitchison lead out the night as the first big winner. The inaugural Zimmerframe Shootout was next up and it will live long in the memory for the skill level and competitiveness on show. After five rounds of cut and thrust, Jacob Fleming from the Pterodactyls edged out Sam Morris from the Pints for the coveted title of BNU Inaugural Zimmerframe Shootout champion. As well as the plaudits and respect of the entire club Jacob was rewarded with a bottle of wine. And a first team contract. Round two of the bingo quickly followed with guest caller, Paul Wilson, all the way from Leeds. With translation assistance from Terry this round was taken out by Stu McAndrew. Next up was the arm-wrestling. Terry Parle officiated both the men’s and women’s competitions with Nick Mooney out-lasting Brent Watson to take out the men’s title. Cushla Lichtwark bossed the women’s competition. A battle of the titans between the men’s and women’s champions was proposed but Nick had made himself very scarce so Cush was awarded the overall title in his absence. Cushla also went close in the Best Dressed Pensioner competition but was pipped by Bronwyn Kelly in her pink ‘Paris’ woolen blouse and cream slack combination. Practical but so very stylish. The evening was wrapped up with the third round of bingo. Guest caller for this one was Andy Cochrane who put on an inspired and educational call. Winner of this one was Chris Mooney. Taking out the big prize here might have gone some way to helping Chris put his ignominious defeat to his brother in the arm-wrestling behind him. Thanks to all those who donated prizes including New Balance, YHA, Hog’s Breath Café, Maranui Café, Civic Video, Randwick Meats, Reading Cimemas, Keith Allan and Terry Parle. See you all next year.
