A celebration at Unity Books, and other favourite places
- Wellington Scoop
- Wednesday will be a day of celebration at Unity Books in Willis Street, marking the end of months of renovations. Bigger! Brighter! Even better! The new Unity Books has a wider, more welcoming facade, a lot more window space to entice pedestrians to stop, and a lot more space for browsing and buying.

Deep water
- Architectural Centre Inc
- The WCC Draft Annual Plan 2011/12 was out for public consultation recently. In these tight financial times the plan was generally about maintaining affordable rates through prioritising spending and reducing costs by $6 million, through reducing some services, improving the efficiency of other services and deferring non-urgent work. Although it’s not all cost cutting, there is an allowance to spend $650,000 on a feasibility study for a new deep-water pool in Kilbirnie.

- Well, I was about to post something up on the tall tower proposal for the corner of Manners St, when this little number popped its head above the parapet, and it got me thinking. It is the latest proposal for Wellington – and no point debating it, because it has already been granted Resource Consent, without having to ask the public, despite being over 30% higher than the “permitted height”.

DCM Bulletin - Thanks, Wellington
- Downtown Community Ministry
- Wellington really is a generous community. The Downtown Community Ministry (DCM) foodbank has gone from having bare cupboards to stocked shelves thanks to a wide range of donations. In April, we asked for donations for our foodbank. We were down to the last few cans of food, and were even out of basics like toilet paper. The past three years have shown a consistent increase in food parcels provided by DCM. In 2009, we provided 2366 parcels. This increased to 2978 in 2010, and if the current numbers continue for 2011, we estimate providing 3460 parcels.

- Given that the Wellywood sign, which has thousands and thousands of Wellingtonians up in arms, is being put up by a company which is 34% owned by the council, and requires a resource consent from the council, you’d have thought that the Mayor would be showing a bit of leadership on the issue.

Sign Language Interpreted C'mon Black! Jun 25
- Downstage Theatre
- We believe in making our work accessible to our community. Last year we received funding to purchase a set of telemagnetic receivers to support users of digital hearing aids in accessing the hearing loop audio in the theatre. This June we’re going one step further. With the help of the Wellington City Council we have scheduled a sign language-interpreted performance of Roger Hall’s C’mon Black!.

The duchess’ nice frock
- The Wellingtonista
- “Oh, look! It’s Kate Winslet’s wedding dress!” On the night of the royal wedding, while most of us were drinking gins and making snarky tweets about Princess Beatrice’s hat (or pointedly not), fashion designer Jane Yeh was hard at work furiously sketching and sewing a replica of Kate Middleton’s wedding dress, ready to go on display at 3pm the next day.

Notional Significance: Skyway
- The Wellingtonista
- [See all Notional Significance posts] The stretch of motorway that leaps out from the bluff was known in the Sixties as the “Kaiwarra-Thorndon Skyway”, incongruously combining the Jetsonian optimism of the term “skyway” with a mangled contraction of “Kaiwharawhara” that today would only be used by Pakeha blokes of a certain age.

Flash mob, flashed up
- The Wellingtonista
- The park in Courtenay Place sees a lot of action during the day – random interpretive dances, fucking annoying people with megaphones who are apparently trying to recruit people to their gym (but I’m sure they must have been hired by the competition because there’s no way anyone who works on Courtenay Place would want to give their money to such loud annoying dickheads), people playing the drums or a piano on a truck – the list goes on. Most of the time, we snap a quick photo and tweet about it. Today, however, we have a video of a Bollywood-style flashmob who were promoting a show we didn’t cover (oopsie!). But it’s better with the remixed soundtrack. Enjoy.

Things to come on the harbour’s edge
- Wellington Scoop
- Amongst all the details of new roads and ramps and car parks, there’s some enthusiasm about cycling and walking in the Regional Council’s new ten-year plan for transport from Ngauranga to Te Marua. In particular, there’s a strong recommendation for a good quality cycling and walking route between Ngauranga and Petone. Regional Council chair Fran Wilde says it is one of the major projects in the plan.
