Wish you were there – Video postcard from Friday night
- Cycling in Wellington
- Some people have reasons. Some people have excuses. Some people just didn’t even know about it. And now, through the magic of the internet, all of you can live vicariously through a condensed version of Friday evening’s critical mass ride. Hopefully you can all join us next time. As awesome as the video is, being there was way more awesome. Totally.

The birth of the film festival
- Wellington Scoop
- The annual Wellington Film Festival, which opens today for its 40th anniversary year, was born out of the film society movement. In 1970 when I was elected president of the Wellington Film Society, I was also programmer for New Zealand’s 50 film societies. (I was a television journalist with plenty of spare time for extra activities.) For the film societies, I had to organise an annual season of films, all to be screened from 16mm prints. But many new titles were available only on 35mm prints, and in those days film societies didn’t have access to 35mm projection.

Our Brand New Name!
- Downstage Theatre
- No - we haven't changed the name of the theatre! Our first floor bar has had a makeover thanks to Massey University design student Brit O’Hara and mentor Debra DeLorenzo, with help of generous donations from our supporters, and funds raised from last year's Flourish scarf auction. After much thought, discussion and suggestions it has been officially christened: The ½.

Why has the Basin Reserve Trust failed to do its job?
- Save the Basin Reserve!
- In today's editorial, The Wellingtonian editor Joseph Romanos inaccurately and unfairly characterizes the Save The Basin Reserve Campaign as anti-roading: "But instead of fronting a politically suicidal campaign called Ban Cars, they chose the more emotive Save the Basin, their logic being that a major road linking Buckle St to the Mt Victoria Tunnel would have a detrimental impact on the sportsmen doing their thing at the Basin. The news that the Basin Reserve trustees had negotiated for a grandstand to be built at the northern end of the ground leaves these campaigners in a quandary. Romanos may be using the inflammatory language and approach of tabloid journalism - trying to report the conflict rather than the issue - but he does raise a key question: why has the Basin Reserve Trust failed to to its job?

The war memorial motorway
- Wellington Scoop
- Everyone supported the concept of lowering State Highway One into a cut-and-covered tunnel under Buckle Street. The alternative – to have a main road running through the National War Memorial Park – was stupid. No one liked the stupid idea except the NZ Transport Agency. And the Agency intends to overrule the wishes of Wellingtonians. Its decision: “Buckle Street will remain at street level.”

The Urban Dream Brokerage
- Architectural Centre Inc
- Friday 29th July, 6pm Illot Theatre, Wellington Town Hall. Three property owners and managers, four artists and an engaged audience are coming together to discuss the question: how can vacant commercial space be more creatively utilised to provide a more vital inner-city? You’re invited to attend The Urban Dream Brokerage, a live art and property panel pitching session. In a live local twist on reality TV formats like Dragon’s Den, artists and then property developers and owners pitch their creative ideas for city vacant spaces to a panel of their opposite. Walking down the city street, what does your dream realty look like?

Yesterday’s Solution
- Sustainable Wellington Transport
- In 2011, you would think two considerations would be central to transport planning; the need to reduce carbon emissions and dependence on oil. Think again… The New Zealand Transport Agency has released for consultation its scheme for the inner city section (Cobham Drive to Buckle St) of its grand Levin to Wellington Airport superhighway. What the scheme amounts to is a road building extravaganza that reeks of the 1960s and 1970s. The salient point about NZTA’s consultation is that it offers no choice. The key projects including a flyover at the Basin Reserve and a second Mt Victoria Tunnel are a fait accompli. So the public is not given any meaningful options, such as the public transport alternative.

Basin flyover: it’s official – there’ll be noise and visual problems
- Wellington Scoop
- The NZ Transport Agency has confirmed that its flyover alongside the Basin Reserve will result in “visual and noise effects.” The coy words are from the Agency’s Wellington highways manager. But he’s concerned only with minimising these problems for the cricket ground. There’s no concern that the same problems will affect the wider community.

- We’d heard rumours at the Fish HQ of a proposed sweetener deal of a Grandstand, but have been caught off the hop by this – I didn’t think it was going to surface just yet. A Viable Arch Centre Alternative?
- Eye of the Fish
- We’re part of the way through the public “consultation” phase of the NZTA schemes for “improvements” around the Basin Reserve, and so far we’ve only heard one side of the story. For whatever reasons, political, Machiavellian, or incompetence, only the “two options” have been proffered to the public by the roading lobby. That’s a real [...]

The Public needs a real choice: Option X
- Architectural Centre Inc
- The NZTA have proposed options for redeveloping the roading of the Basin Reserve. But these are not really options. They are two schemes for flyovers which have very little difference. We believe that the scheme/s proposed by NZTA exclude the public from making a real choice. Currently the Basin is a mess. From a multi-modal perspective (pedestrian, [...]

Final fortnight of club rugby set to reach fever pitch
- Wellington Club Weekly
- A highly competitive second round Jubilee Cup could come to a head as early as this weekend, but, in the case of the Hardham Cup at least, both the playoff and promotion-relegation battle looks set to go do into the final round. There will be no love lost in the Jubilee Cup, where Oriental-Rongotai became the first team to officially qualify for the playoffs on 30 July by winning their fifth straight second round victory last week against Poneke.

Does the NZTA scheme measure up?
- Architectural Centre Inc
- We’ve already begun discussing issues relevant to the Basin, particularly through blog posts … but this time we’re going back to basics. Core objects of our constitution include: 1. To work for the general improvement of the urban environment. 2. To promote a true understanding of Architecture and Design amongst the community. 3. To consider, critique and recommend changes of law and administration relating to or affecting architecture and urban planning.

Who wants to drive a bus?
- Cycling in Wellington
- Who wants to drive a bus? As a cyclist, I know all too well how inattentive/impatient motorists and inattentive/impatient pedestrians behave on our streets. Bus drivers not only have to deal with that, but they also have to deal with timetables, dispatchers, fare-zones, overhead power lines, cash and of course passengers, some of whom… I’m glad I don’t have to deal with.

Vote no for both flyover options
- Wellington Scoop
- One week of the eight-week consultation period is already over – leaving less than seven weeks to tell the Transport Agency what we think of their flyovers and their other roading plans. The best suggestion so far has come from Maximus on Eye of the Fish, who recommends that everyone sends a submission saying: I vote for neither of the two options presented. I demand to see a full and fair evaluation of all the other schemes that you have had for the last 2-3 years.

What About Light Rail?
- Architectural Centre Inc
- I lived in Szczecin, Poland, until I was 14. I had family in other large centers in Poland. All those cities had something in common—extensive and very well utilised light rail networks. The trams were a different colour in each city, usually coincident with the colours of the city’s coat of arms. Even at the lowest pointduring the communist regime when the people were at their poorest and the country was in a huge debt the trams were going strong, taking commuters to work, home, school, parks, shopping (when there was something to buy, anything really would do). I certainly don’t remember anyone not being able to afford to use the tram service.

Bike parking in Wellington: it’s boring
- Cycling in Wellington
- It’s not that easy to design a functional, interesting bike rack that comes at a reasonable cost. The standard ‘staples’ we see around Wellington are functional but…they’re kinda boring and I have to say I don’t think they add much to the cityscape. In fact I’ll go further than that. They’re drab and plain, and I say we see them but actually we don’t.
