    • Result: Capital Punishment
      • The second running of our Capital Punishment mountain event! This year the field size more than doubled to a decent-sized field of 77 finishers. The course is a real mixture of terrain, starting with a few hundred metres of road, moving onto rough farm trails, a fast 4WD downhill track, then the big gnarly but steady uphill grind, and finishing with a rough gravelly downhill track. This year the conditions were excellent: very dry underfoot, a newly graded Old Coach Road, and a tail wind up the hill. This, along with a slightly shorter course at the start, saw Dougal Thorburn finish the circuit in 34:01, nearly two minutes quicker than James Coubrough's time from last year. Second was Graham Pearce and third Stephen Day. In the women, Jo Doherty finished in a time of 45:22, ahead of last year's third placegetter Anne Rose and Katie Jenkins. Dougal and Jo also won the King and Queen of Kaukau awards, with Dougal taking 13:14 to ascend Kaukau, and Jo 17:42.

      • The upper hutt P2 mens team got thier first competion point on the weekend with a Draw against Harbour city Tawa. Probably due to several late changes to the draw no referees were present and Both teams provided a referee each. This was a very unfair situation for these people to have been put into and for thier efforts we owe them alot of thanks. It was not a particularly nice game for them to have had to umpire with moments of conflict, A certain player was a bit confrontational and will be starting the fine system off by putting $20 in the swear jar.

      • Operation Details Date/Time:  Sun, 22/01/2012 - 16:30 - 17:10 Operation Type:  CG Operation (good samaritan) People Assisted:  2 Total Volunteer Hours:  1 A float plane was having difficulty taxiing to the jetty in high winds inside Porirua Harbour. The pilot contacted the Fire Service to request standby assistance and they contacted Coastguard Mana for on-water assistance in case there were any difficulties with getting to the jetty safely. Incident Management Team members from Coastguard Mana and the local fire crew attended from the shore. The plane safely taxied to the intended jetty and no further assistance was required.       • The Prime Minister has announced today that the Memorial Park is to be a Park, and not a motorway. Hooray for common sense, good taste, sensible planning, appropriate responses, and joined up thinking. There has evidently been a fair bit of quiet contemplative thought going on with this proposal, and what seems to have been happening is some good cross-party agreements, that what is best for New Zealand is to have a Memorial Park worthy of its name. No one liked the proposal of a motorway through the park, which is what a five lane highway at ground level would have been – and so good sense has prevailed.

      • I did have a small post scheduled for tomorrow morning, but the release of both of these today sort of takes precedence! It never rains, but it pours! Seems kind of appropriate, considering the weather we have been having lately. So: seeing as the Basin Reserve “mitigation” study / blatant bribe to the Reserve Trust has been released, and the Passenger Transport Spine study, and the material for the EPA from NZTA have all been released today (there is no coincidence here, it’s all been carefully planned out), and that’s just al too much for me to post on – I thought I’d just throw it open for you to comment on.

Harbour masters team responded and requested CGM support to get the yacht to a lift out point. Harbours team were pumping the yacht out but it sank before the CRV could get to the scene.     • 2020 Port Nicholson Regatta – You Were Here!
      • What a sensational Port Nicholson Regatta! With over 170 Sailors and 30 boats on the water, including over half a dozen visiting boats with 4 Sports Boats from Auckland, RPNYC delivered an event members can be proud of! The Port Nicholson Regatta opened with the Lawson’s Dry Hills Charity Cup Race on Thursday, followed by a convivial Regatta Dinner and presentations to Britannia Sea Scouts, Wellington Free Ambulance, and Live Ocean. It provided opportunity to acknowledge the fantastic support from our sponsors who help make things better and easier: Yamaha, Crombie Lockwood, Lawson’s Dry Hills, Mt Gay, Steinlager, North Sails, Burnsco, Pivotal Print, Barton Marine, Havana, Mevo, Chaffers Marina, and Whittaker’s. The event delivered three days of intensive and rewarding regatta racing in perfect weather. Impeccable race management led by John and Linda Parrish, was ably supported by our support crews and assistants. Notably Marg McVeagh, Janine Small, Julie Bate, Carole Inkster, Phil Taylor, Mel Zytecka and Ashley Owers who were out on the water for the duration of the event. Not forgetting Kim McMorran of course, for our brand new marks. After the relentless start sequence to get 44 races away in 4 divisions over three days (plus the 8 starts in the Lawson’s Dry Hills Charity Cup Race), there was silverware to award.       • In 2011, you would think two considerations would be central to transport planning; the need to reduce carbon emissions and dependence on oil. Think again… The New Zealand Transport Agency has released for consultation its scheme for the inner city section (Cobham Drive to Buckle St) of its grand Levin to Wellington Airport superhighway. What the scheme amounts to is a road building extravaganza that reeks of the 1960s and 1970s. The salient point about NZTA’s consultation is that it offers no choice. The key projects including a flyover at the Basin Reserve and a second Mt Victoria Tunnel are a fait accompli. So the public is not given any meaningful options, such as the public transport alternative.

      • The park in Courtenay Place sees a lot of action during the day – random interpretive dances, fucking annoying people with megaphones who are apparently trying to recruit people to their gym (but I’m sure they must have been hired by the competition because there’s no way anyone who works on Courtenay Place would want to give their money to such loud annoying dickheads), people playing the drums or a piano on a truck – the list goes on. Most of the time, we snap a quick photo and tweet about it. Today, however, we have a video of a Bollywood-style flashmob who were promoting a show we didn’t cover (oopsie!). But it’s better with the remixed soundtrack. Enjoy.

    • Yacht with mechanical issues assisted back into Mana Marina
      • Operation Details Date/Time:  Sun, 01/03/2020 - 11:45 - Wed, 11/03/2020 - 13:45 Operation Type:  CG Operation (good samaritan) People Assisted:  2 Total Volunteer Hours:  726 A 10m yacht had mechanical issues (blown oil seal I believe) and was unable to return to Mana Marina as there was no wind and they couldn't get into the marina. MR1 was dispatched to tow them back in as a non-member tow after confirming they understood that there would be an charge of $280/hr. They were towed back to the breastworks outside Mana Marina.       • Operation Details Date/Time:  Wed, 13/01/2021 - 20:00 - 22:30 Operation Type:  CG Operation (good samaritan) People Assisted:  3 Total Volunteer Hours:  22 4.5m runabout, red and white, 3 POB, at anchor south end of Open Bay. Non-member, called Police, was told there would be a charge from CG which they agreed to. As we were heading out we contacted him via SMS to say we were on our way. He called back and said that someone had just taken them under tow and they no longer needed our assistance. Artists Bio V is a multi disciplinary creative, specialising in digital and large scale surrealist imagery.     Published in VICE in 2018, her work largely discusses the construction of identity and how society impacts that.  Often touching on subjects around mental health and the connectedness of human beings.    Her works seeks to act as an anthropological study of humankind through imagery.   "Art has an amazing ability to convey a message across cultures, race, social economic groups... it speaks without words and unites like nothing else can"    V has worked with the New Zealand Police and other organisations such as Woman's Refuge, presenting on education around Mental Health Awareness and Family Harm Reduction.    The last year has seen her speak at Pecha Kucha, whilst also working with multiple councils painting murals and teaching a course at Hastings Girls High School.  She was a featured artist in the Auckland Festival of Photography, painted the festival circuit, and has showcased her work nationally at places such as Tairawhiti Museum in Gisborne.

The tow was transferred to Porirua Rescue and two men were also transferred from the dinghy to increase free board on the dinghy. The dinghy was towed to the Paremata Bridge launch ramp. The two men on Porirua Rescue were dropped off at the Mana Marina Coastguard berth.       • KING’S BIRTHDAY– OPEN DAY MONDAY 3RD JUNE, 10AM- 4PM Wellington’s historic Wrights Hill Fortress in Karori will be opening for public inspection again on King’s Birthday, Monday 3rd June. The World War Two coastal battery first opened to the public in 1989 and will be accessible between 10am and 4pm. On King’s Birthday people are invited to self-guide themselves through the tunnels and gun emplacements. The walk usually takes about one hour, so bring a torch with you for some fun! Visitors will be able to explore the 620 metres of underground tunnels with a free map and history pamphlet. They will see the engine room, shell stores, plotting rooms and the huge gun pit where Gun Number 1 used to stand, as well as a replica of the 10 metre-long gun barrel.

      • CubaDupa Returns to the Streets with a Beautiful Disruption Wellington’s favourite neighbourhood comes alive with colour, art, music, parades, dance, food, and thousands of creative people the weekend of 28-29 March 2020   WELLINGTON, NZ — All of New Zealand is invited to celebrate the country’s most vibrant and creative street festival, CubaDupa, disrupting the heart of Wellington on 28 and 29 March 2020. The multi-arts programme returns to the streets in a big and beautiful way—with a dozen stages, over 100 food stalls, special creative zones, 100,000 friends and neighbours, and one beautiful disruption after the other. “Our iconoclastic Te Aro neighbourhood will be filled with sights and sounds, parades and drum beats, street installations and public art”, says Festival Director Gerry Paul, who has programmed the most ambitious CubaDupa ever. “And at the heart of it all, ready to transcend the ordinary, are over 1500 artists and performers from the region and around the world”. Music is the very core of CubaDupa, and there will be no shortage of aural disruption in 2020. The festival will present a diverse free live music programme showcasing almost every genre. VNZMA winner Troy Kingi brings his irresistible galactic funk, alongside rising Hip Hop star JessB. Contemporary Canadian folk group The East Pointers join the party with their high-energy take on the Celtic tradition. Making the trip from across the ditch are Bullhorn, an epic 10-piece brass ensemble fronted by the extraordinary rapper Roman MC. Local groove masters Dr Reknaw and emerging New Zealand rockers H4lf Cast add their grooves to the weekend celebration. Musicians, sound experiences, and immersive electronic wizardry become a cornerstone of the 2020 CubaDupa with the festival’s most ambitious project ever, Cubasonic. The mass musical interruption—conceived by New Zealand’s leading composer John Psathas—involves nearly 500 musicians lining the street, twelve conductors above the crowd, a custom-made overhead sound system, and a locally-invented Tesla coil synthesiser known as Chime Red. Defying words, Cubasonic will be presented once each day—uniting the entire festival site with a ten-minute musicalhappening unlike anything ever attempted in New Zealand. The project is a true partnership of creative community, generously supported by Creative New Zealand and involving Orchestra Wellington, New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, Royal New Zealand Air Force Band, The Nudge, Boat and a mass of Batucada drummers. “CubaDupa is one of Wellington’s primary lightning rods, generating and releasing a massive, positive energy charge into the city every year,” says Psathas. “Festivals offer unique opportunities for ambitious ideas. At their best they give us experiences we never forget, experiences that exceed our expectations both in the witnessing of art and in the moments of massed connection that sneak up and take us by surprise. Cubasonic, played throughout the heart of Cuba Street, will be vast, epic, and monumental.” The 2020 musical acts will be presented across twelve stages, including the brand new Radio Active Upper Cuba SoundSphere, Wellington Airport Swan Lane, the Garage Project Wild Workshop stage, and a Glover Park zone designed in partnership with Massey University’s College of Creative Arts. “Festival audiences can experience an abundance of music, dance, street theatre and art activations taking place throughout our Te Aro precinct” says Paul. “After finding your groove with JessB or Bullhorn, join The Ping Pong Party People in a wildly creative table tennis championship, visit Shabby Salon for a drop-dead gorgeous makeover, then jump into the Weddings-and-Funerals installation.” Another new element making its debut at the 2020 CubaDupa is the Mammoth Circus Tent in the Wilson Carpark on Ghuznee St. The bold and colourful venue will host energetic performances and workshops for all ages by day, and transform into a saucy cabaret show by night. “It’s part of our desire to grow the festival in new ways, add interesting platforms, and showcase even more artistry and performers from all around the world” says Paul. “Families will experience circus shows by fabulous acts like COLOSSAL Productions, 3 Speed Crunch Box or Seven Deadly Stunts during the day, and then the older crowd can enjoy comedy and more provocative cabaret after dark”. A theme running through much of the 2020 CubaDupa programme is Intergalactic Madness—alien visitors, strange messages, and wondrous disruptions from other worlds. Big Nazo will invade from Rhode Island, with generous support from the Embassy of the United States of America, for their debut visit to New Zealand. The outlandish collective of visual artists, puppet performers and costumed musicians will bring their alien creatures to the streets and stages of CubaDupa. Closer to home, Alien Junk Monsters add their psychedelic recycled trash costumes—and a few new otherworldly offspring. And for the first time ever CubaDupa will play host to BodyPalooza, a new national body paint competition featuring over 30 artists and models painted as alien visitors. “There’s an eclectic and eye-opening experience for everyone at CubaDupa, because it’s a fearless celebration of who we are as a diverse and creative city, and what we have in this iconic neighbourhood”, says Eric Holowacz, CEO of Creative Capital Arts Trust. “Whether you are into new bands, raucous parades, or the search for extraterrestrial life, CubaDupa has it.     • A possible Basin Reserve flyover has emerged again in a new “surprise survey” from LGWM
      • The Save the Basin Campaign Inc has written the following letter in response to the new Let’s Get Welly Moving “surprise survey” which LGWM chose not to notify stakeholder groups, such as Save the Basin, about: The STBC, as a stakeholder group in the LGWM consultation process, takes strong issue with your organisation on a number of matters in relation to the existence of this survey: The survey has taken everyone at STBC by complete surprise. What is the purpose of the survey and who has it been distributed to? There was no prior notification to STBC (as a stakeholder) that LGWM would be commissioning the survey and it was only by chance that a member of the STBC committee was alerted to its existence. This is alarming and shows a complete lack of transparency and questions the validity of the survey. The process for public engagement on the LGWM scenarios closed in November last year – and in March this year LGWM released the summary of the feedback process on future transport scenarios for Wellington. Your website currently says “We’re using the feedback from the November 2017 public engagement to help guide our work as we develop a recommended programme of investment.” However, you continue to be asking for more views and ideas through this latest survey – with no information about this available to the public through your website. Of great concern is the fact the survey implies that a bridge/fly-over around the Basin Reserve is still an option – especially in the way the questions are constructed and presented.  For example in relation to design, one survey respondent said that the preferences for infrastructure around the Basin gave options for a bridge or tunnel on one page – suggesting that there were only two options – then on the next page the last part of this question appeared offering an at grade option. Although we are not circulating the survey to our members to complete, we know that others who have been alerted to the survey may.  If the survey was designed to be filled in by certain individuals or organisations, either targeted or randomly selected, the results will be invalidated if others complete it.  No-one should trust the results of this survey.       • Howdy, all – well, it’s nearing that time of year again, when we spend a day celebrating ourselves, and you, theoretically, get the treats!! Record Store Day 2019 at Slow Boat on the 13th of April is shaping up as one of our best yet – and that’s no idle threat, when in the past it has involved instore performances from Dave Dobbyn, Neil Finn, Anika Moa, David Kilgour, Tiny Ruins, Julia Deans, and many more musical luminaries. We will also, all things being equal, have a whole swag of limited RSD vinyl releases, plus the usual lollies, giveaways, and good vibrations! And while I realise that many have been critical of it as an event, suggesting it has become over-commercialised, is too busy, and rains on your regular Saturday vinyl-trawling buzz, spare a thought for those who are new to the game – the celebration of physical media, the culture of independent record stores, and the community that springs up around the simple, pleasurable act of flipping through vinyl records (or CDs, or DVDs, or even, God forbid, TAPES…!) , and finding something you can love and clutch to your heart. Maybe you will meet someone you share a passion for Yes with, and fall madly in love, or start a band, or make a lifelong friend… you just never know!! We are proud of our place in the Wellington musical landscape – of the relationships we have forged with people who share our love of music, and records, and the mystique that still surrounds music, and to this end we would love it if you were to come celebrate with us on the day – or any other day, for that matter, if you’d prefer. As ever, with the limited releases, no pre-orders, no holds, and while we have ordered a whole bunch of things, we don’t know what we will actually get until the day – opening the doors an hour early than usual at 9am, and having a queue building is a total delight, and we look forward to sharing details of the day soon.
