How did I get hear? #14 - Jeremy Toy on John Coltrane's "Coltrane Live At Birdland"
- Slow Boat Records
- In the early 2000’s Martin Winch had just released “Espresso Guitar” and I was playing in melodic hardcore bands and freaky free jazz funk bands, so it is safe to say that at my guitar lessons with him we were at either pole.

Surf’s Up Too

- People power rules. Or so it seems today - if the paper is right, then the Maranui may be about to be saved. We discussed the 5th Scenario here, with some reasonably heated dialogue, but it sounds as though a sensible agreement has been reached.

The local people know that the memorial park can’t have a road cutting it in two
- Wellington Scoop
- The people of Mt Cook know what needs to be done to make the long-postponed Buckle Street Memorial Park a success. The best solution, they say, is to trench and cover Buckle Street, so that the park can connect with the National War Memorial.

Wellington: screwed
- WCC Watch
- So not only are many of our buildings going to collapse – but it seems that the very building that houses our city council is an earthquake risk. Given how vital the WCC will be to any disaster efforts, this is very scary. The article is very light on details – particularly how much it would cost to fix the problem. If anyone has any more information – please send it through.

Bond Street needs us
- The Wellingtonista
- So I’ve been thinking about Bond Street for a while. Council is currently planning changes to the area. Submissions are open on Traffic Resolution TR70-12 (PDF). The rationale for the change is reasonably strong – 7 reported crashes at the intersection of Bond and Willis Streets since 2010. The basic proposal is also reasonable – closing the intersection and making the west section of Bond Street into a cul-de-sac.

The law and the Library
- Wellington Scoop
- Our Central Library is hugely missed by so many of us, a place to go, to be, without cost or expectation, a place to learn, a place to find adventure in the pages of a good book, a place that added life to Te Ngakau Civic Square – the heart of our city. There is strong demand ‘to just reopen it.’ Problem is the Council cannot ‘just reopen it’.

Spicer Landfill needs more room
- Porirua City Council
- Spicer Landfill is running out of room faster than anticipated due to Porirua’s strong growth, so plans are afoot for it to expand. The Council is embarking on a resource consent process to get approval to extend the landfill as current projections show the landfill is likely to run out of room by 2026/27. Community engagement sessions are planned for this month. Porirua Mayor Anita Baker says Spicer Landfill is one of the city’s most well-used facilities.

A City for People
- Decades of inaction have meant house prices are out of control, while old rental properties rot out from underneath us. A whole generation of people are at risk of being forced out from the central city into new suburbs sprawling north, spending hours every day in traffic jams. We believe the Spatial Plan will allow Wellington to plan for the future so that new generations of Wellingtonians can share the city we love, and have a chance to live in a home that is affordable, accessible, healthy and warm.
