On return took tow of dingy into marina "E"pier.  Person took vessel to swing mooring and was rowing back in failing light against incoming tide. The conditions at the time were rough with a 25-35kt southerly, but the vessel was tucked in near the coast. A wave, larger than normal, took them by surprise and swamped the boat. They were able to bail it out but by the time they had done that the waves were pushing the boat further up the beach and they were unable to get away.     Sweet win for UHCF 11th grade team at Easter Tourney

    • Congratulations to the UHCF 11th Grade Storm on a FANTASTIC effort at the KCU Easter tournament. To go through the day unbeaten, score 11 goals and concede only 1 is a brilliant achievement for any team, but to beat Onslow the way they did in that final was outstanding. In the 5 to 6 years I’ve been coaching it was probably one of the gutsiest performances I have seen from a group of kids – they didn’t give an inch, but played hard and fair! Well deserved boys on taking the trophies away this year!!! Important to remember too, these are the twelve best 11th Grade teams in the Wellington District!

The Harbour Master asked us to attempt to recover it to remove the hazard. Our Junior Hockey Have-A-Go Day is the perfect chance for tamariki to try out the sport in a fun, supportive environment – no experience needed! We’re inviting all keen kids in Years 3–8 to join us on Saturday 26 April from 9–10am at the National Hockey Stadium (Turf 1). Whether your child has played before or is completely new to the game, this event is a great way to get active, make new friends, and build confidence on the turf.     • These are some of the main themes expressed at a meeting of residents and friends of Mt Cook, held on the 21st of August at the YMCA stadium in Tasman Street. The Meeting was warmed up by speakers who talked about a range of topics including: the proposal to develop a supermarket on the Tasman/Rugby Street site where the Boys and Girls Institute is located; the history of Mt Cook; the proposal for a Memorial Park and moving Buckle Street; the response of Mt Cook School to the plan to move Buckle Street – Sate Highway 1; the WCC’s plans for the area surrounding Adelaide Rd, and; the uncertain future of TSW Swim School currently using the BGI pool.

    • The cost of food has gone up 8.4% in the last three years[1] ̶ a bigger rise than the general Consumers Price Index. The high cost of food is reflected in the figures for child poverty that are being widely discussed as part of the election campaigns[2]. “How do people manage?” asks Stephanie McIntyre, Director of Downtown Community Ministry. “We know that it’s a real struggle for some because of those who come to the DCM foodbank – and it’s the same for other foodbanks in Wellington.” “That’s why we’re asking DCM supporters and all Wellingtonians to contribute to the Food Appeal this coming Saturday, 19 November, organised by Wellington Foodbank Coalition members to replenish their stocks of food.”

• • Boat broken down near Ohau Point

    • Operation Details Date/Time:  Sat, 04/02/2012 - 18:00 - 23:00 Operation Type:  SAROP Cat 1 People Assisted:  3 Total Volunteer Hours:  15 Coastguard Mana was tasked by Police to recover a broken down vessel with three people on board from Ohau Point, south of Makara Beach. When CRV Trust Porirua Rescue arrived on scene it was discovered that two of the people had already been returned by another vessel to Makara Beach. The remaining person was towed back to Mana. The vessel was a 17ft runabout that had experienced mechanical failure. • • One, Two, Buckle Your Shoes—Getting Around Gets Tougher

    • The Government released its draft policy statement on transport last week and the news is bleak for anyone who wants to go anywhere other than their flat and the dairy down the road. Funding for public transport, walking, and cycling has been significantly slashed by the latest policy, down $1 billion from the initial allocation set by the prior Labour government. In addition, while money has been allocated for some roading projects, the draft policy statement has said that none of the funding for local roads is to be used on “multi-modal improvements” like bus or cycle lanes, and that “there will be reduced funding for traffic calming measures, such as speed bumps.”

Drifting onto nearby rocks on Mana Island, Coastguard Mana were called to assist. They had managed to quickly deploy their anchor to stop them from hitting shore and CRV Trust Porirua Rescue approached and took the yacht under tow. It had been filling with rain water over a long period and the severe rain overnight (which caused significant flooding in Porirua) had topped it up even more. The Harbour Master said the owner required assistance to pump out the vessel. Coastguard Mana pumped out 5000 litres of water and the vessel was left floating evenly in the water.     • Operation Details Date/Time:  Sun, 10/03/2013 - 16:00 - 20:15 Operation Type:  SAROP Cat 1 People Assisted:  4 Total Volunteer Hours:  29 A runabout experienced electrical failure while 6 nautical miles SW of Kapiti Island. They were still able to contact Maritime Radio via their VHF radio and a callout was activated. Coastguard Mana dispatched CRV Trust Porirua Rescue to assist, but by the time they got there another vessel had supplied them with another battery and got them started. TPR escorted both vessels back to Mana. They were able to sit on anchor to avoid being blown onto the rocks while Coastguard Mana responded. We towed them back to their vehicle that was at the launching ramp between the bridges at Paremata. Vessel located, they had sorted their initial problems, escorted vessel back to the bridge launch point. vessel had fuel/engine problems several times on the way in. 3 POB, only 2 wearing lifejacketc, cell phone carried, rang during the initial search but went to voice mail.
