Keeping the Council and the Airport honest, or will Tangaroa have the last word anyway?

- Over the last couple of months two important developments occurred regarding the proposed Wellington Airport Runway Extension: Its $90m co-funding by Council found its way into the LTP – despite significant opposition against it, but with some very important caveats Nature has shown us on several occasions just how insane the proposal is to put such vulnerable infrastructure into the Cook Strait. In addition, WIAL met with the directly affected residents of Moa Point to update them about the work they’re doing in relation to the airport extension. We will discuss these two points in separate blogs, so let’s have a look at how the Long-Term Plan consultation went first… Despite being touted as a great success by its proponents, with apparently only a ‘noisy minority’ of people opposing the $90m for the runway extension that was ring-fenced in the LTP, this really doesn’t stack up on closer scrutiny. Strathmore Park blog has written about this extensively, eg here, here and here, but it was clear during consultation that both the Council and WIAL got quite rattled once submitters started asking some difficult questions. The WIAL CEO went as far as swearing – twice! – during his oral submission when he commented on the report by NZIER reviewing EY’s economic impact statement that they prepared for BARNZ, the Board of Airline Representatives. However, upon reading the EY report’s full page of caveats it becomes very clear that the content cannot be relied upon as a fair representation of the truth, not that that stopped Justin Lester from insisting that ‘the numbers are sound’. When the Councillors were asked if they had actually seen any plans or designs so far for the $90m of ratepayer money they were willing to put forward, they looked on rather blankly. It is a sad indictment that you even have to ask a public official if they would pay a builder millions up-front for building their house without having seen any designs or plans, but as we suspected, the answer to that question was a resounding ‘no’. However, despite all of this, and the fact that the submission process may well have violated Section 93B under the Local Government Act as well as there being questions about whether the Mayor and Deputy Mayor fulfilled their own code of conduct in relation to giving at least the appearance of open-mindedness and independence during a public consultation process, the majority of Councillors signed off this mad plan to ring-fence almost $100m of our money for this ‘white elephant’ (according to John Key). On a very positive note, however, our and many other submitters’ strong objections did lead to some extremely important caveats and amendments being included. The LTP now says that the Council will make a final decision on this project and whether to commit funding to construction once: WIAL has obtained resource consent for the project The Council has received and considered a cost-benefit analysis and business case from WIAL that will be independently reviewed. Other key considerations that the Council has said will need to be considered before it makes its final decision relate to: The resilience of a runway extension to weather and climate change The proposed investment vehicle and any revenue agreement Satisfactory airline commitments Funding arrangements for construction and confirmed construction costs The governance and management structure to oversee construction. The Council has also said it will undertake further public consultation before making a final decision on whether to commit funding to construct the runway extension. It is our expectation that it won’t ever get that far as the business case simply won’t stack up, but at least we now have some protections in place to stop the Council from just gifting a private company several million dollars more on top of what ratepayers have already given without setting out some clear requirements first. By the way – to this date, it seems not a single report (other than the EY statement) or progress update has been received by Councillors from WIAL for the almost $3m they gifted the airport for undertaking the resource consent application (back in May 2013 and then again in December 2014), which may be a breach of contract. Presumably, the Mayor would have received updates during board meetings in her role as Director but it does not seem as if this information flowed on to the rest of the Council. This again raises the potential conflict of interest of the Mayor who sometimes seems to take her position as a WIAL Director more seriously than her mandate to the city and its ratepayers. Why has no one wondered about this lack of progress or at least started asking some hard questions before signing off the money in the draft LTP? All this makes it clear that it is really important to make sure that the Council will stick to what it has approved in the LTP in relation to the runway extension instead of rolling over again and doing WIAL’s bidding based on no more than one-sided, overly optimistic and inadequate information and PR spin. It is also really important that all, but especially the most severely affected residents, have a fair say during this process which to date has been intransparent and inadequate. So far, the involvement and conduct of the Council has not led us to believe that they are overly interested in due diligence but we hope that the new caveats will ensure that we are protected against pushing ahead with a project where the main benefit seems to go largely to the airport company, but the main costs, risks and impacts sit squarely on the ratepayers and residents.

At this time of year we receive hundreds of calls from the public who are concerned about a baby bird they have found out of its nest and we have already had a huge influx of baby birds being brought into our centres. In most cases these birds are not injured and are not in need of any extra care. In fact they often have a much better chance of surviving to adulthood if they are left in their own habitat. We have put together some key points about baby and young birds to help you decide what to do if you find a bird out of the nest – it could make the difference to whether a baby bird survives or not. Is the baby bird bleeding or injured? Yes – the bird needs to be taken to the nearest vet clinic or SPCA as soon as possible where it will be given veterinary care. Any vet clinic or SPCA will take the bird free of charge. If possible, call ahead to let them know you are on your way and explain the condition of the bird. No – if there are no signs that the bird is injured or bleeding, you need to identify if it’s a nestling or fledgling and then follow the advice below: Is it a nestling? A nestling is a very young baby bird which will have very few feathers, pinky-blue skin and will not be able to walk. Nestlings out of the nest are the most vulnerable, so try and locate its nest and place the bird back in it as soon as possible. Take extra care not to disturb the nest or any other nestlings or unhatched eggs that may be in it. If you cannot find the nest, place the bird in a small container (eg. an ice cream container) lined with tissue and secure it to a nearby tree. Leave the area and monitor the fledgling from a distance. The parents will return to care for the bird once they feel it is safe to do so and should continue to care for it. Is it a fledgling? A fledgling is a baby bird which is fully-feathered and can walk. After hatching, baby birds leave the nest and can spend up to two weeks on the ground before they are able to fly. During this time, the parents continue to care for them by bringing them food and scaring off predators. Human intervention is likely to lessen the fledgling’s chance of survival so if in doubt, leave the bird alone. The only time you should move a fledgling is if you find it in a potentially hazardous situation like a busy footpath or car park. In this case, you should carefully relocate the baby bird to an area with plenty of vegetation cover. The day has been filled with assemblies, reminiscing, excitement, tears and sentiment. To all our seniors, we wish you all the best, whether you are sitting NCEA exams or joining the workforce, whether you are leaving us or returning to WHS in 2020. Level 3 Art Portfolio exhibition The Level 3 Art Portfolio exhibition is happening in the Art department, D block, Monday 4 November, 12pm – 5.45pm and Tuesday 4 November 9am-5pm. All welcome. Japan exchange students’ farewell Saaya Nakahara and Saki Sasakawa have been attending WHS since the end of August as part of their exchange from Osaki Kasei, WHS’s sister school in Japan. Below are some of the memories of their experience here. We arrived in NZ on August 30. We have had many experiences in just 2 months. We went to the Climate Change strike on 27 September. We have never been to a strike, so we were surprised that there were so many people. It was a good experience because we cannot join a big event like this in Sapporo. Our most exciting experience was the Ball. We do not have an event like this in Japan. This was the first time for us to go to a dance party. We took a lot of pictures with our friends in the photo booth. Our favourite photo was taken with our year 13 Japanese classmates and Grace. Thank you for giving us wonderful memories!!! Achievements NCEA Art folio exhibitions Folios were exhibited on two Fridays this term showcasing the enormous efforts students have put into their artmaking this year. Many friends parents and staff visited the exhibitions. Rowing regatta success WHS Rowing have completed in their first regatta of the season: the Queen’s cup regatta. The regatta was held over a 1000m course with all rowers competing to a high level despite the cold and windy conditions. The next race will be on 2 November and is the Norton Cup Regatta. Floorball Former WHS student Marie Sundin is transferring from Wellington Floorball Club to Swedish IBF Falun. Last month the International Floorball Federation picked Marie as one of the top three international transfers. Congratulations Marie!

Kia ora koutou During the last two months there has been some great local orienteering. A big thanks to Red Kiwis for an excellent Pokapū regional champs weekend over Labour weekend. This was really well organised, on great maps, and with excellent course setting. I made a big muck up of the night event but totally loved it. Our club members were right behind Red Kiwis too—a big thank you to Gillian and Lizzie Ingham, as well as to Rob Collier for being there every day to help run the finish. Our Wednesday night events have started up and are highly recommended. Our first offering was in Seatoun, planned by Demelza Robinson and controlled by Luis Slyfied. Our Wednesday events are great for everyone, with start times between 6-7pm, and two or three short courses that hopefully don’t leave you at sixes and sevens! Great fun for everyone! About a month ago, friends and I were in Queensland at the Australian Orienteering Championships and associated events—of which there were 7 events in 9 days. We thoroughly enjoyed the orienteering and the camaraderie of staying together in a shared house during that week away. If you’re lucky enough to be heading overseas and get the opportunity to try orienteering in totally foreign terrain and conditions then I thoroughly recommend the experience. One thing I’d like to see next year is a growing and active membership. Membership brings rewards—being more involved in the sport, attending training events, a sense of belonging and making new friends. To that end, come to our AGM and social on Saturday 6 December, which is great chance to connect with others in your sport. And, next year, don’t just tell your friends about orienteering—make it your resolution to bring em’ along! Wellington Journalists Ask: Can Former Flyover Fans Be Trusted To Evaluate Basin Flyover Alternatives?

- As Wellington Scoop reported on 10 September, a small group of local body politicians and NZTA officials has taken it upon themselves to make decisions about the future of the Basin Reserve – and all but one of those local body politicians was in the pro-flyover camp: At yesterday’s regional council meeting, three councillors sought an integrated approach to deciding on at-grade roading improvements around the Basin. Paul Bruce and Sue Kedgley were supported by Barbara Donaldson. But Paul Swain refused. He said that a small governance group of himself, Fran Wilde, Celia Wade Brown and Andy Foster, plus two Transport Agency staffers, would make the decision, and would then report back. In a comment on this article, Councillor Helene Ritchie christened this group the “Secret Six”. This group subsequently promised to work with the community, but there remain concerns about how well this work will in practice given the composition of that group, and whether they will be prepared to take a fresh and unbiased look at non-flyover options they had previously rejected out of hand. In the Dominion Post, columnist Dave Armstrong came up with a memorable analogy: It’s like getting the Keep Our Old Flag Society to design a new flag. Will this group report back with recommendations that are the urban design equivalent of three boring silver ferns and a koru that looks like a cow doing number twos? Wellington Scoop has dug further into the track record of the members of this “governance group”, and what it has found does not inspire confidence. For its part, Save the Basin hopes that NZTA’s decision not to pursue its flyover plans through the courts will enable even the most entrenched flyover supporters to think afresh, and we are pleased that the New Zealand Transport Agency has indicated it will take a new and more genuinely consultative approach to post-flyover discussion and decision-making. But we’re mindful of the point the preceding Wellington Scoop report makes in its final paragraph: No doubt there’s no way of excluding Transport Agency representatives from the next round of road planning for the Basin. But the Agency should consider its past bad behaviour and find some new faces who have the ability to listen, rather than to threaten or dictate or just misrepresent. As both Wellington Scoop and the Dominion Post have pointed out in these articles, there are real alternatives on the table at the Basin, including the BRREO, Option X and tunnelling. As Dave Armstrong points out, it makes sense to focus on approaches which are low-cost and don’t foreclose other options if they become necessary: Some critics say that BRREO is only a short-term solution. Even if that is true, wouldn’t it be worth giving it a go? If it works, keep it; if it doesn’t, start digging for a longer-term alternative. When you look at the time and money already been wasted by myopic officials intent on a flyover, BRREO and Option X deserve some serious consideration, not just by sore losers. What’s more, Wellington transport needs much more than a rethink at the Basin. FIT Wellington and Generation Zero have made a valuable and timely contribution to this debate with their revamped light rail (modern trams) proposal for Wellington, released last week.

Open Evening and 2021 enrolment We welcomed over 400 families and whānau to our open evening last Monday on what was possibly the coldest night of the year. Our team of student and staff guides took tours around the campus, students were actively involved in promoting different areas of school life, and everywhere was alive and buzzing with activity. Tamatha Paul – lunchtime lecture The Feminist Club was delighted to welcome Wellington Councillor Tamatha Paul to deliver this Thursday’s lunchtime lecture. Tamatha (Ngāti Awa / Waikato Tainui) was first elected to Council in 2019 and is one of three Pukehīnau / Lambton Ward counsellors for 2019-2022. As an independent candidate, Tamatha campaigned on issues including zero waste, connecting communities and the importance of prioritising future facing leadership. As can be seen from these pictures, Tamatha’s visit attracted a large audience, keen to welcome and listen to her. Year 10 Computing – Photoshop and political discourse Students in Gus Donaldson’s Year 10 computing course have been developing skills in Photoshop through working on a project on the theme of political discourse. Their work is currently on display in the foyer outside the library. The posters, with the narrative from their creators alongside them, are powerful pieces of work that clearly exemplify the students’ views and response to current issues in the world around them. The display will remain in place at the start of Term 3 and you are invited to come and view it. WHS Ink – Junior Art club zine 30 Year 9 and 10 students have been working on their own artwork during each week’s WHS Ink sessions. Coordinated by Teacher Aide, Connor Morrison-Mills, this group of talented students’ work is now included in their very own zine. Click on the image below to see more. Outdoor Education’s snowy tramp It has been cold enough for many this week, with the storms and freezing winds around Wellington. The Outdoor Education students showed their mettle by heading out on a tramp in the Tararua range earlier this week. They made it as far as the Powell Hut before the weather conditions made it too risky to continue and they turned back. Achievements He Kākano – AWD Tenpin Bowling On Thursday 2 July, He Kākano students competed in the annual AWD Tenpin Bowling competition against students from other Wellington colleges. All students and staff had a fantastic time and there were some really strong bowlers in the group. The top three WHS students were Talib Prime, Darius Ngature and Joshua Nathan. Roxy5 finalists ‘En Passant Films’ and ‘Look Away’ are both WHS finalists in the Roxy5 film competition this year. Screenings will take place on Friday 31 July at the Mclaurin Theatre, Victoria University. The winner will be announced at the Red Carpet awards evening at the Roxy Cinema on Wednesday 5 August. We are waiting eagerly to to see whether The Work of An Artist (En Passant Films) or Hey Cassie (Look Away) will scoop a place. Sports Boys 1st XI Football On 27 June, our boys 1st XI football team beat Newlands College 4-0, taking them to the top of their pool. This Saturday the team will play St Patrick’s second team. If the team win or draw they will go into play-offs on 18 July against either Onslow College or Wellington College for a place in the Youth Premier Reserve. Good luck team!

This visit presented the opportunity for the Prime Minister to announce an additional $4 million for the project which will ultimately enable students from 500 NZ schools to work with professonal artists and creative practitioners, benefiting from their specialist artistic knowledge and creative practices. Thirteen of our He Kākano students are involved in the programme which is aimed at enhancing student wellbeing and improving their ‘core competencies in communication, collaboration and creative thinking’, as well as inspiring awareness of careers in the arts and creative sectors. As part of the visit He Kākano shared what they had learned prior to lockdown, demonstrating fantastic memory of their routines and great coordination too. The Prime Minister also met students passionate about the creative arts, taking time to talk to them about their interests and talents. We are delighted to write that the Urban Dream Brokerage is relaunching in Wellington city (see the website), with support from the WCC City Recovery Fund for the first year. We are now open for new applications from both citizens with new ideas for vacant space to increase public participation in the city, and from property owners with vacant space that needs enlivening. UDB continues to be funded through the Wellington Independent Arts Trust but Letting Space (Mark Amery and Sophie Jerram) are announcing the handover to Maverick Creative led by broker Jason Muir and staff Linda Lee and Tallulah Farrar. We have been in discussion for some time, and Mark, Sophie (and past brokers Helen Kirlew Smith and Tamsin Cooper) are professionally involved in training and overseeing the establishment of the UDB over the first six months. Excitingly, Letting Space are also curating six commissions with WCC funding for UDB in 2021 (details here). Pencil in the busy Xmas diary a rather special launch celebration for Thursday evening 17 December 5.30pm at Level 2 57 Willis Street (above Unity Books) which will see the launch of a UDB Book 2012-2018, Brokered Dreams, and the introduction of a raft of exciting programmes for early 2021 Theatre as a City with Performance Arcade, Cubadupa, and the dynamic new artist powered work space we are in for that evening Two/Fifty Seven. First, Beethoven’s mighty Eroica Symphony features on Saturday 2nd December at the Michael Fowler Centre. At the other end of the concert, the orchestra is performing the one work which can top Beethoven’s in terms of its impact, Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring. “I’m extraordinarily excited to present the defining works of the 19th and 20th century for our grand finale concert,” says conductor Marc Taddei. “Music would never be the same after the Eroica and The Rite of Spring. The sense of drive, power and rhythmic impulse connect these two monuments of Western civilisation.” Beethoven’s Eroica caused a sensation when it was first performed in 1803, a hundred years later, Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring started a riot. Beethoven demanded the orchestra play a series of discords so shocking to audiences, many of them thought he had gone mad. No longer was music just for aristocrats, or the church, with the Eroica symphony, Beethoven created something to take on the world. The crowning work of his triad of ballet masterpieces, Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring, about a girl chosen to dance herself to death in a pagan sacrifice, sounds as fresh now, as it did a century ago. Paris audiences knew to expect the unexpected from Diagilev’s Ballets Russes, but the Rite was beyond anything they had imagined. With exotically primitive melodies, irregular rhythms and brutal harmonies, the orchestra is pushed to its technical limits. And despite the modern rhythms and harmonies, audiences find Stravinky’s music irresistible. The tentative, questioning woodwind fragments that open the work, the brutal asymmetric stomping rhythms of the first dance, the deep, grinding harmonies that seemed to come from the earth itself, and the virtuosic sacrificial dance at the end: all combine to make a music more carnal, primitive and instinctive than any ballet before. Now the Rite of Spring is one of the most popular ballets ever, and always a sensation whenever it is performed. This is Orchestra Wellington’s biggest concert of the year, and it also marks the full launch of its 2018 season. This week was no exception. For extra spice, Tawa drew the ire of many in the rugby community by starting the player currently accused of assault in an incident outside the Poneke clubrooms late at night a few weeks ago. From an OBU perspective, the most important points were a solid defence that didn’t leak any tries and no serious injuries. Sam Reid has a minor injury concern but was thumbs up for the Avalon fixture this coming Saturday. Conditions It was an overcast day with with barely a breath of wind. This brought terror to those still petrified from Alfred Hitchcock’s movie, ‘The Birds’ as a tree on the clubrooms side of the field attracted thousands of twittering birds. Who knows if it interfered with the lineout calls. OBU was playing from right to left from the terraces side of the field in the first half. Or if you like back to the road and clubrooms end. Notable Performances Caleb Delaney had one of his best if not the best performances in the jersey. A towering presence in the lineout and involved in everything around the field. Similarly Morgan Poi had the best game I’ve seen him play for OBU proving a really difficult opponent for Tawa to stop. The partnership of Dale Sabbagh and Callum Harkin at first and second five is looking stronger every week both on attack and defence! Ty Poe continues to grow in the centre role. He may not be the size of some of the players he marks, but he proves that they still hit the ground hard if you use good technique. It seems like I repeat myself every week but Shamus was stellar at the back of the scrum, as was Kyle at 9 and Sam Reid playing at fullback this week. How the game unfolded Minute What happened Score 1 Min OBU win the kickoff and set to the right. Finally lost forward in the ensuing ruck. 4 Min OBU scrum on halfway, close side. the ball spins wide but goes in behind the backs. Well picked up and taken into contact. OBU penalised for holdng on. Kick to the corner by Tawa goes out in goal. 6 Mins Scrum to OBU, Shamus takes it down the blindside and recycled 10 m on. Kyle chips it over the top. Tawa gather and bring it back to the close side of the field. Sam Reid makes a good tackle and Shamus turns the ball over and kicks it long. 8 Mins OBU feed to the scrum. The backs take it right for one phase then back to the left. Tawa backs get caught offside. It’s not straightforward but is a kickable penalty. OBU successfully kick to the corner through Dale. The lineout throw is called not straight and scrum is set. OBU penalised for dropping the scrum. 16 Mins OBU penalised for side entry to the ruck. Tawa opt for the shot 38 metres out from the posts and just to the left. Penalty is successful! Tawa 3 OBU 0 18 Mins OBU knock on from the restart! 20 Mins OBU penalised for not releasing the tackled player. This starts a solid period on defence 5 meters out from the goal line. Eventually Tawa spill the ball on about the 6th or 7th pick and go. Somewhere in the middle of that Taine subs off for blood and Josh runs on to take his place (Caleb into lock, Josh on the blindside). Josh Gimblett Replaces Taine Plumtree (blood bin) 25 Mins OBU penalised for player going off their feet at the ruck. It’s about 35 meters out and in front of the posts. Kick at goal is successful. Tawa 6 OBU 0 27 Mins The kickoff goes out on the full. Taine and Josh trade places after Taine is cleaned up. Taine Plumtree replaces Josh Gimblett (blood bin) 33 Mins Tawa lineout on their 22 meter line. They clear the ball down to Sam Reid who runs it back strongly but is taken in a head high for his trouble. OBU elect to go for the shot 40 meters in front. Dale lands it. Tawa 6 OBU 3 39 Mins Tawa penalised for dropping the scrum 5 meters in from the near touch on halfway. OBU kick to the corner to take the lineout 5 meters out. Someone offers an opinion and we are marched 10 meters. Ouch! Tawa elect to have a shot 45 meters out and to the right of the sticks. Tawa kicker lands a useful kick Tawa 9 OBU 10 46 Mins Tawa center makes a good break and looks to put his wing into space. Not sure if the pass wasn’t up to it or the wing didn’t get to where he needed to be, either way the ball rolls meekly into touch on the close side of the field. 48 Mins Tawa holding on in the tackle. OBU go for the posts about 42 meters out in front and slightly to the left. The discipline monster is back to upset proceedings for Tawa. The kick misses but the ref plays his joker and gives Dale another shot. I think it is due to a Tawa player trying to put Dale off by shouting something. No-one seems to know what the hand signal is for that! Dale makes no mistake on his second attempt. Tawa 9 OBU 13 50 Mins From the 10 meter line in Tawa territory Adam Clarke gets away an impossible pass to Sam Reid who boosts along the far touchline and scores it in the far corner. The referee and his assistant consult for a few seconds before the try is awarded. The difficult conversion is successful. Tawa 9 OBU 20 53 Mins Great kick from Dale down into Tawa corner. Tawa lineout. OBU backs are caught offside. Tawa clears to touch about halfway. An action replay takes Tawa into the 22. Morgan is issued a team warning. Tawa mounts an attack down the sideline and the Tawa fans are ecstatic but Kyle has taken care of the hooker who is in touch before the corner. Kurt Sickler on for Sam Reid (injury) 58 Mins Tawa concede a penalty on the 22 for backs offside. The referee issues another warning to both teams. Josh Gimblett on for Matt Sleith (tactical) Matt has had yet another busy day at the office. This time in the number 7 shirt after a few weeks in the front row. 63 Mins Tawa has a strong scrum which they drive off to the left. The OBU clean-out comes from the side and the ball is cleared out to the touch on halfway. 65 Mins OBU has a strong lineout drive to disrupt Tawa possession. Tawa’s experimental kick pass to the left wing doesn’t pay off as OBU is awarded a penalty possibly for in front of the kicker. Cleared down to 15 Meters out from Tawa line. 66 Mins Another powerful OBU lineout drive at the line with Shamus taking it over to keep his try tally marching on (2nd equal for Wellington premier rugby, 1 ahead of Sam Reid and 2 ahead of Ty Poe and Taine Plumtree!) I didn’t get much time to work out who moved to where but safe to say Izzy’s hard ball running was back on display nearer to the ruck than wing. Great to have him back! Josh makes a great break from a lineout but the pass in the tackle goes into touch. 78 Mins Long period of OBU attacking the Tawa line. Tawa infringe and seeking the bonus point, OBU takes the lineout in the corner. 81 Mins From there an error leads to a Tawa scrum. they bravely try to run it out to salvage something from the game. Eventually they knock it on from some strong OBU defence. From the scrum OBU are penalised for not rolling away and after a few more phases the game is whistled to completion. All in all a well taken victory. OBU looked in control for most of the match while not ever looking completely dominant. That was probably the strongest scrummaging side of the season so far. We didn’t get the clear advantage we have usually enjoyed. That’s to Tawa’s credit. There were a lot of penalties, but to that we’d have to say there was a lot of infringing! Goodbye to Language 3D: Godard infamously said that “a film should have a beginning, a middle and an end but not necessarily in that order”. He continues to throw out the rules, not just for the 3D technology normally reserved for popcorn fodder, but for language itself. Tom Ackroyd Boyhood. Because of the idea of the lead aging from 6 to 18 over the course of the story, and because it’s a Richard Linklater picture. Hard to Be a God. Never heard of the director but the NZIFF write-up is irresistible. Under the Skin. Sue Tyler The Tale of The Princess Kaguya – for what is film festival without a Studio Ghibli film National Gallery – behind the scenes at the national gallery, it looks like all the things i crave in a documentary The Lady from Shanghai - I love the old restored films that are brought back every year. I still remember the year Rear Window played at The Embassy and despite having seen that film on video many of times it blew my mind. Penguin survey Glenda Robb from the Kapiti Coast Biodiversity Project explained that they have received funding to do surveys on little blue penguins in Pukerua Bay. September to December is their nesting time. They use two methods: on sandy beaches, they look for footprints in the sand early in the morning; or they use a specially-trained dog to sniff them out (this is particularly good on non-sandy beaches). Leaflets will be circulated along Ocean Parade, Beach Road and Hanui Road in the next week. There is also a trapping programme along the beach to remove predators such as rats and stoats. The hope is that a large enough population will be found that a programme can be put in place to protect them and ideally increase their numbers over time. The survey will take place in the next few weeks (weather dependent). There are groups elsewhere in the country doing similar work to protect their local korora populations. Gillian pointed out that the dog walking area on the beach is right by where there are penguin nests. Glenda suggested it may be worth lobbying PCC to make it a dog-free area, though it is difficult to get such a status. It was noted that there is still an ongoing problem of enforcement, which is not helped by the fact that there are no signs on the beach asking people to keep dogs on the leash. Action: Iain to contact Brent Tandy at DOC re signage.Action: Glenda to circulate link to a webcam in a nesting box in Paekakariki.Action: Committee to circulate flyers to other parts of the village in October with the AGM notices. Porirua City Council update Nathan explained that the District Plan was activated and is now available for people to feed back on by 20 November. PCC is approaching each Residents Association in the city to invite responses. Josh is on the Climate Change working group, which is looking at updating their terms of reference. The group currently has representatives from each of the GWRC councils plus Mana Whenua. Two big changes are being proposed: bringing in an accountability mechanism to ensure action and follow through; and providing capacity to have Mana Whenua representatives from all six iwi in the region. He noted that PCC is also starting to organise workshops for consultation on the Long Term Plan. Wellington Regional Emergency Management Office (WREMO) Whetu Bennett is the WREMO community resilience adviser in Porirua. He congratulated Pukerua Bay for our village’s response to the Covid-19 lockdown. Whetu focuses on high priority areas in the city (Whitby and Waitangirua) but is available to answer questions and provide support. He can run workshops on planning and preparing for emergencies, as well as earthquake drills. He helps PCC identify areas that they can assist with, and currently he is looking to find a location in Pukerua Bay for a new 25,000 litre water tank. There are already community water tanks at the school and the library. In case of a civil emergency, the local WREMO operations centre is in Elsdon. Emergency Assistance Centres provide support such as a nurse and social worker. However, it is likely to take at least eight days to get those set up. In the meantime, Pukerua Bay would need to be self-sufficient. Kate explained that there is a need to refresh the Civil Defence plan for the village. Whetu is happy to work with a local team to update it and also to help run a workshop to introduce residents to the updated plan. Projects update Muri Platform building The updated lease is sitting in the Kiwirail office in Wellington Station and can’t be accessed until we move into Level 1 lockdown. The opening went well. However, some work is still required to fit the panels accurately. The event was led by representatives from Ngāti Toa who did a significant blessing of the community garden as well as the building. Thanks to Jane Comben for the design work and to Ted Coates for mowing and tidying up along the platform. The community garden group offered hot drinks and sausages, and there was also storytelling. Action: Margaret to provide appropriate details on the event to Jon for website. Village Plan review Kate met with Justine from PCC. While PCC are keen to help with our village planning review; however, with the pause on capital funding and the pause on the village planning programme, it may be difficult to get financial support from them. The Village Plan team need to write a brief explanation of the purpose of the village plan, and how we intend to engage with the community in an ongoing way over the coming decades. The hope is to still get some funding from PCC for the survey, but the timing for launching the survey will be delayed. Community centre Action: Iain to talk to the Diocese about their intentions for St Mark’s building. Annual General Meeting Date: Thursday 22 October, 7.30-9pm at the Community and School Hall. The School Newsletter is going out on 24 September. Action: Paul to ask school to include AGM notice and kororā survey leaflet in newsletter. This depends on the Lockdown level at the time, so a decision will need to be made nearer to the date of the meeting. Proposed amendments to Rules There was some discussion about whether the RA should actively be advocating for local businesses. It was suggested that the Village Planning survey include a question, and that the Rules may be reconsidered after the survey has been completed. The other proposed changes were discussed. Action: Paul/Nikky to rewrite and present via email for approval by the Committee so the amendments can be circulated to the community at least 14 days before the AGM. Other business Action: Committee to read through the draft Committee handbook and discuss in more detail at the October meeting. Meeting ended: 9.54pmNext meeting: 13 October 2020 Appendix: Village Planning update from PCC He Are Pukerua The uncovering of the latest heritage panels last Saturday at the former Muri Station Southbound was a great time for celebrating and sharing the history of railways in Pukerua Bay. The research and writing the team has undertaken (especially Ashley and Margaret Blair) is an outstanding commitment to bring this heritage to the community. The final installation within the available remaining village planning budget for this project will be the wide format heritage station along Centennial Highway, celebrating the construction of the road. The structure is now in place and just needs the panels fixed to the frame later in the year. Ara Harakeke shared pathway extension After the success of widening the footpath from the shops to the overbridge, NZTA have asked if PCC could consider widening the section from Haunui Road to SH1 near Ted Coates’ house with 100% funding. PCC’s construction partner Mills & Albert are currently costing the proposal. When the costed proposal has been received, it has to be submitted to NZTA for their internal processes to evaluate and decide if it is a suitable project for funding. PCC will let us know when the costing is submitted. Community food forest It was great to see the renovations now underway again following the COVID 19 lockdown on the former northbound Muri Station building. Please keep all receipts for the materials, as they need to be submitted to Council before 31December for accounting purposes. Pukerua Bay community hub initiatives This project – which focuses on creating opportunities for community connections – has an operational budget allocation of $4,750 to support initial research and a local programme of activities. PCC are looking forward to working on this initiative in a way that aligns with broader village planning objectives.

Seb’s poem is included below: Old man I’m sitting and I watch the old man from the street rest and unfurl from his linen a pack of Dunhills. IYNT Winners, Minsk, 2019 WHS students Ryan Bright and Lydia Acton were part of the winning NZ team at the 2019 International Young Naturalists’ Tournament. Lydia was the team captain, having also competed in the 2018 tournament in Tbilisi, Georgia. Ryan reported his solution to problem 7, “Burning Glass” in the final against Croatia and Switzerland. He scored the highest score in the final, which was won by NZ with 47.9 points, to Croatia’s 45.9 and Switzerland’s 45.6. The team’s achievements have been widely recognised, including this tweet from the National Science advisor! Sports Underwater Hockey HUGE congratulations go out to all our Underwater Hockey teams for their fantastic season this year. Our Junior Open A team won bronze medals in Friday night’s CSW Premier finals, defeating Hutt Valley High School 6-2 in their playoff game. The boys were hoping for better after entering the playoffs in second place, however they suffered a shock 3-0 loss to Scots College in their semi final. The bronze medal is still a massive achievement, and the first medal won by a WHS team for as long as Murray Chisholm can remember. This team and our Senior Girls team will contest the national championships in Wellington at WRAC from September 6th-8th. WHS may have lost the game 3 – 0 but it was an evenly matched contest and our team benefited from the opportunity to take on Tararua College.

With participation up, this is great evidence that our club is in a strong position. Although I've been on the Committee over the years since arriving in Wellington in 1988, I haven't yet had the honour of leading Orienteering Wellington. My focus at this time is ensuring your club maintains momentum with quality events and training, as we gear up to hosting Nationals in a year's time. We have now wrapped up our evening sprint series and are moving on to the classic-style events. Our two most recent events were at Tikara and Karori Park and have also been part of a College Sport Wellington(CSW) orienteering series. We are grateful to our partnership with Orienteering Hutt Valley in delivering the CSW championship events. In the meantime, I wish everybody heading to Nationals in Canterbury safe travels, and good orienteering! Beverley Holder President Training opportunities Course Planning Seminar If you are currently a course planner or controller, or are interested in these roles, then Orienteering Wellington has a session for you! Our half-day Course Planning Seminar will be a practical session with some tips and tricks on how to set good courses, how to use the course software, and additional compliance responsibilities for controllers. You will also get the chance to share ideas with others who are planning and controlling courses. When: Sunday 4 May Date 4th May Where: Johnsonville Community Centre Find out more and register your interest. Course Planning Seminar Practical training for developing orienteers On Sunday 15 June, we will host training aimed at skills for orange-level orienteers – either those currently running orange or yellow courses and who want to start preparing for the next level. The focus will be on moving away from “handrails” like tracks, fences and streams, as well as improving accuracy of navigation near the control site. The location isn’t confirmed but will be in Wellington. Weekly interval training is back! Lizzie Ingham is offering group interval training at 6pm Wednesdays. You’ll get to build fitness running along the flat, up hills, or maybe a mix—and doing intervals as a group is much more motivating than doing intervals on your own. All Societies need a new Constitution Why now? As an incorporated society, Orienteering Wellington must provide a new Constitution to comply with the Incorporated Societies Act 2022. Any society that does not reregister by 5 April 2026 will cease to exist. The Act had not been reviewed since 1908 and the new Act is far more explicit regarding the Committee, expectations of officer, conflicts of interest and concerns and complaints. What is changing? Currently, our Committee quorum is five. Orienteering Wellington now proposes a minimum Committee size of five, with a majority quorum. The Committee would be supported by working parties to help carry out the Club’s operations. We’ve effectively used such arrangements for delivering major events, club events, design, and reviews. Lachlan, our secretary, has led a small team to draft a new Constitution. We ask that you now read the draft Constitution. The procedures they have developed allow us to respond safely and quickly to a range of circumstances and have been successfully implemented at schools across the country. Harrison Tew® will run specialised training with senior management, our staff and students in the lead up to a lock down exercise, which will occur on Monday 9 April. The exercise will be as real-life as possible, which will mean that parents/families will receive notification by way of text, WHS app and/or email. The information passed will emphasise that this is an exercise/practice and will explain that all updated information will then be posted on the school website. In a genuine incident, should you hear of a lock down at the school, can we please ask that you do not attend the school or phone, as we will not be able to respond. Your presence at, or contact with the school may make it more difficult for us to manage the situation, and could potentially & place your children and in fact yourselves at risk. What you need to do now Prior to this exercise, please check that your contact details (mobile phone numbers and email & addresses) are current. This will be the information we use to reach you should an emergency occur at the school. You can do this by checking your details through the parent portal [portal.whs.school.nz] and choosing ‘Details’. Download the WHS App today via Google Play store (Android) or iTunes app store (Apple) Reminders: Earthquake / school closure This is a good time to encourage you to make or review your family plan around other emergencies, such as earthquakes. You may find ‘How to get ready’ is a helpful resource. A family plan is particularly important for students who travel to school from out of zone as their transport routes may be cut off. If a decision is made to close school, for any reason, we will keep our year 9 and 10 students with us until a known adult can come and collect them from the school field. The only adults permitted to collect a student will be the caregivers and emergency contacts that we have recorded. We will only release our year 11, 12 and 13 students when it has been declared safe to do so. Please ensure that a discussion about safe routes to get home are part of your family plan. Yan pushes innovation to protect economy

- Mayoral candidate Jack Yan believes his policies on creativity and innovation are needed more than ever in light of the recent Fonterra disaster and has released a statement and a new video (speaking in English, te Reo, French and Cantonese, no sign language sadly) highlighting the need for the next mayor to be able to bridge cultures at a global level: Wellington’s innovation can be a safety net when Fonterra-level scares hit If mayors aren’t part of this dialogue, talking to the top 40 cities in the world and opening doors for our exporters, then we’re going to be affected terribly when our nation brand is damaged,’ he says. ‘We have seen real evidence of this week.’ ‘In the meantime, Wellington is the home of companies like Weta and Xero, along with numerous independents¬ has a reputation that can stand head and shoulders above this scandal.’ Mr Yan, who issued his manifesto for the Wellington mayoral election in April, months before his opponents, has remained on message throughout about the need for Wellington to become a global hub for innovation and identifying export champions. Given Wellington’s urban base, those champions were likely to be outside the primary industries. ‘New Zealand is a primary products’ nation and I recognize the sector’s importance. However, this scare shows just why it’s important for cities to back up national economic activity and to have strong brands themselves.’ ‘Wellington is in an enviable place to deliver greater innovation, with high-growth firms and strong creativity, which will be more rigorously grown if I am elected,’ he says. Mr Yan has authored books on branding and has practised in the area since the 1980s. His work at the Swedish branding think-tank, the Medinge Group, has seen him lead the way on international brand thinking, making him better equipped to develop a proper city brand, get Wellington businesses exporting, and being an advocate for them globally. He agrees with earlier commentators, including Prime Minister John Key, that the scare has harmed New Zealand’s national brand. As he predicted in his 2010 and 2013 campaigns, strong city brands will have to come to the fore to promote economic activity in export markets. Mr Yan says, ‘There is a certain level of pride in saying something comes from Wellington, but we haven’t recognized this properly. We have export earners here and by promoting a diverse economy, we can ensure that we have more of a safety net when scandals in our primary sector occur. ‘I have long been concerned since the days of the “New Zealand Way” brand in the 1990s that we were missing the mark on promoting our nation. Even then, I was outspoken on saying that the likes of Karen Walker and Tait were being excluded. Yet Kiwi innovation is unique: it comes from a sense of isolation and independence,’ he recalls. ‘We have export markets criticizing our “100 Per Cent Pure” campaign again. Quake survivors count blessings and God's guardians

- News Cecily McNeill September 2013 One parishioner in the tiny town of Ward near the epicentre of last month’s 6.6 earthquake is planning to teach her grandchildren about their guardian angels because she says someone was certainly looking after them. Mary Hickman who, with husband Ossie, and their three sons form the nucleus with the West family of the parish in Ward, says they are all counting their blessings. Her husband, who is disabled, was lying on the bed alone in their brick house when the quake struck at 2.31pm on Friday 16 August. He said it was like being in a very violent storm at sea. ‘Things were ‘flying off the walls’ during the violent and prolonged shaking ‘but he wasn’t hit,’ she said. When the shaking stopped he managed to get himself into the nearby sitting room to wait for one of the sons to help him to safety. All the families gathered away from the houses and power lines until the first of the numerous aftershocks had subsided and one of Mary’s sons, whose wooden house needs its chimney demolished, has moved his family with four children to temporary accommodation in Blenheim. She and Ossie moved to a motel. Another branch of the family most of whom farm between Grassmere and Ward have sustained ‘massive damage’. ‘One of their homes, a brick house, is red-stickered (uninhabitable).’ Mary says the experience has been numbing. ‘You know you have to manage but it’s one day at a time.’ And as for those guardian angels, ‘it’s a good opportunity to learn that God has special people he sends to take care of us’, says Mary. Meanwhile, the quake has also rendered the town’s Catholic Church unsafe. The top third of the bricks on the steeple of the church, which celebrated 75 years recently, have loosened. The tower is over the entrance to the church. Scientists say last month’s quakes came from a fault line lying under Lake Grassmere about 40 kilometres south of Blenheim whereas the July shocks were centred more in Cook Strait. The more than 3,500 aftershocks since the 5.7 on 19 July have given seismologists a clearer idea of the larger fault system, the Dominion Post reported on 20 August. It appears seismic activity is moving away from Wellington. GNS geoscientist Bill Fry said it was more important to think in terms of a seismic network. ‘There are a lot of faults in the upper South Island that could potentially give rise to earthquakes,’ he told the Dominion Post. And the archdiocese is still awaiting confirmation of the extent of minor damage to others of its buildings in the wider region. Structural engineers have inspected the Catholic Centre and other archdiocesan workplaces and say the damage appears from initial assessment to be cosmetic. Director of Archdiocesan Support Services David Mullin is asking parishes to look for any signs of damage to assess the need for an engineer's inspection. These earthquakes are a timely reminder of the need to do what we can to improve the strength of buildings for people’s safety and confidence.

This year we are expecting all year 9 and 10 students to be competing. At years 11 to 13 the event will be for competitors only. Other students in years 11 to 13 will have a Home Learning Day and I encourage students to make good use of their time on that day if they are not going to attend the athletics. Teachers will talk to senior students about their expectations for this day. We encourage year 11 to 13 students to come along and support their peers and the junior students. Senior students who have committed to running a stall on the day are also expected to attend. Students need to make their way to Newtown Park and have their name marked on the roll by 8.45am. The athletics programme will start at 8.45am with the 1500 metres, these athletes will need to be at the track at 8.30am to warm-up and get ready, the day should conclude by 3.30pm. Entries for all events are taken on the day and students are encouraged to actively participate and to support their whānau group by wearing their colours, Riley – red, Kelly – yellow, Howell – green, Royal – blue. We look forward to seeing who our top athletes will be as they may go onto represent WHS at regional athletics championships. Please note that although bikes, skateboards and scooters might be used as transport to arrive at the park, they must not be ridden at all inside Newtown Park. Shoes and appropriate attire must be worn whilst competing. Students should bring water, wear a hat and have sunscreen. Food should also be brought for the day and students may like to bring cash to purchase food from the stalls run by senior students. What’s happening? Aroha Day – 14 February For many 14 February immediately conjures up images of hearts and flowers, but at WHS it is a special day of engagement and opportunity. Yesterday was WHS’s first Aroha Day. The hall filled with stalls from over 40 different activities and sports and students from all year groups took the opportunity to find out about the activities on offer and sign up. For new students it was an inviting opportunity to find out about the life of the school. As one Year 9 reported, the event gave him the confidence to join clubs that he might otherwise have not felt confident enough to approach. For older students it was the chance to showcase their passion for the activities they are already engaged in. Groups put together inviting displays to tell others about their activities. Students enjoyed the outreach and opportunity to talk with and encourage their peers to sign up and get involved. As a result over 160 students have signed up for Relay for Life and the High School musical group is expecting more than 80 to its first meeting. Many other activities and sports are experiencing record levels of interest. Overall, Aroha Day was a day of collaboration, outreach and engagement and is a day that will certainly become an annual highlight in WHS’s calendar. Year 9 & 10 Progressive Achievement Tests (PATs) Year 9 and 10 students are taking four Progressive Achievement Tests (PATs) during Weeks 4—5 (beginning 18 February) in their core classes. Letters have been sent home. All Year 9 and 10 students must ensure they have a laptop with them as the tests are completed online. You can view the schedules for the tests here. For more information on PATs, go to: Understanding PATs – Community and Parents (NZCER) Papa Taiao Camp 2019 Students taking Papa Taiao at Level 3 explore sustainability, environmental dynamics, conservation and related issues. In such a course, hands on experience is essential. This week the Papa Taiaio students visited Matiu / Somes Island, snorkelling off the coast and investigating the island’s ecology. Ecology Trip July 2020 WHS wish to take a small number of students who will be at least 16 years old in 2020 to the small island of Dominica to learn about ecology techniques both on land and in the sea. February’s Library lunchtime lecture: Genetics Jim Inglis, Senior Business Manager Genetics, Pamu, is giving the February Library Lunchtime Lecture. Taking place in the Library on Thursday 21February from 1.30-2.15, Jim will focus on Genetics and who is doing what in NZ’s production systems. This is a golden opportunity for AgHort and Biology students to discover the technologies in use. Importantly they will get an insight onto the biotechnological solutions that are not in use and will be able to understand the reasons why. School Leavers Toolkit: WHS works with the MoE to review design concepts Over a dozen WHS senior students attended a user-testing workshop on Monday morning run by the MOE (Ministry of Education) to review the forthcoming ‘School Leavers’ Toolkit’ design concepts. They heard from a diverse group of our students with a wide range of perspectives, different aspirations and varied learning needs. The toolkit represents a Government commitment to provide students with opportunities to develop the knowledge, skills and capabilities needed to transition successfully into employment, training or further education. The web application designs our students tested and critiqued included iconography for resources to support financial literacy, an understanding of how our political systems work (civics), and developing key workplace skills. It will be aimed at students in years 11 – 13 and beyond. Students were asked to give input on decisions about design, accessibility and function. They gave the project team honest, in-depth feedback on the design ideas for the web space. MOE staff, impressed with the engagement of the WHS students – some of whom took part in last year’s Hackathon – invited students to share their ideas further and assist the MOE with user-testing as they develop a web space to connect students to key information needed to successfully transition out of school. The MOE were delighted with our students’ enthusiasm and insight, and look forward to working with them in the coming year. Base One garden A big thank you to Vicki and the Base One students for taking the time to set up and maintain the new herb gardens outside the foods rooms. We are now using some of these gorgeous herbs in our dishes. Notes from the Music Department Choir started practising Thursday at lunchtime. Newcomers are welcome. Come to the main music room at 1.20pm (bring your lunch with you). If you are play a stringed instrument, our string ensemble needs you! Jazz band will start week commencing 18 February. If you are interested in joining the Junior Jazz Band, this will start later on in March. To talk to Mr Wollner about any of these, you will find him in the main music room after school each day. Achievements Scholarship Success! Scholarship is the highest level of achievement possible at NCEA Level 3 NCEA and awards $500 to each successful candidate. We congratulate Gwen Palmer-Steeds on achieving three Scholarships, including an Outstanding result in English. Congratulations also go to to Sophie Dickinson-Smith, Amelia Mance, Sophie Mance, Christopher Matheson and Luke Roeven who have all achieved highly across a range of subjects. In addition, Aroha Millar, Year 13 Sculpture student from 2018, has received a $5000 scholarship to attend the course Toioho ki Apiti — Bachelor of Māori Visual Arts College & University in Palmerston North. We are very proud of her achievements and wish her all the very best for her future studies in art. Sports Update Our Sports programme has been very busy so far this year! From the drop down arrow select your sport. Some of the mainstream sports, Netball, Hockey, and Rugby are not included here as these sporting bodies prepare their own draws. Floorball: Thailand Floorball World Cup Qualifier. Kristina Sundin has just returned from Thailand where she and her sister, Marie Sundin (a former WHS student) represented New Zealand, competing in the Asia World Cup Qualifier. At 14 years old, Kristina was the youngest player selected for the team. She really proved that she deserved her spot in the team during the games. In her role as a defender made many fantastic saves. While the NZ women team didn’t qualify, the sisters learned much and had a great experience. They are already starting to prepare themselves for team selection for U19 Women’s World Cup. This will be held in Sweden 2020. New Zealand women’s head coach, Sven Sundin, is also the coach of Wellington High Floorball team. Rare fern rediscovered.
- Te Papa's blog
- I’m one of the Botany Curators at Te Papa, and ferns are one of my specialties. New Zealand has about 200 native ferns, and some of them are very rare. We recently rediscovered one rare fern that had been ‘lost’. I was beginning to wonder if it had become extinct, but fortunately it has not. Still, the known total of individuals is still only 9, and this population is only a goat-lunch away from extinction! Me, on top of the Ruahine Ranges. No rare ferns sighted up here, but interesting nonetheless. The rediscovered fern is a maidenhair spleenwort. It had been definitively identified from just three New Zealand sites, all in Hawke’s Bay, and all dating to the 1950’s. The localities of these three sites were not precisely recorded, and no one I talked to knew of a living population. I enlisted the help of the Manawatu Botanical Society to search one of these sites (the most precise one, which involved searching several square km rather than several tens of square km). I wasn’t very optimistic, given the amount of time since it had been previously collected and that I had already looked at a number of similar Hawke’s Bay sites. But, we found it - 9 plants in one very small area. There is another maidenhair spleenwort in NZ, and it is quite common. These two maidenhair spleenworts look similar, but they have different chromosome numbers; the common one has six sets of chromosomes while the rare one has four sets. This kind of difference is usually treated at the subspecies or even species level in ferns. Unfortunately, the present taxonomy, or formal scientific naming, for these ferns is not adequate. We hope to sort this out in the next year or so. They have both been called Asplenium trichomanes, but this fern does not occur in NZ (at least when interpreted in a narrow sense). The rare maidenhair spleenwort in NZ has also been called Asplenium trichomanes subsp. quadrivalens; whether this is correct remains to be established. Maidenhair spleenwort. This is the rare species, but the common one looks very similar. The two maidenhair spleenworts usually occur on or near limestone. They can be distinguished from all other ferns in NZ by their undivided, black, almost smooth stems, and by having their reproductive structures in lines away from the margins of the undersides of their leaves. This particular arrangement of the reproductive structures characteristics all of the spleenwort (Asplenium) species, of which there are about 20 in NZ (and some 600 in the world). I’d be interested in learning of additional maidenhair spleenwort sites in Hawke’s Bay. Both species of maidenhair spleenwort have been recorded from the Hawke’s Bay, so any new finds may be the rare or the common species. I would need to closely inspect them to be sure. Te Papa’s Collections Online includes a photo of a maidenhair spleenwort specimen collected from the Hawke’s Bay in 1881 (it’s the common species, rather than the rare one). Rhona welcomed everyone to the meeting. Newtown Festival Rhona thanked all the marshalls and other volunteers for helping. The meeting made an enthusiastic vote of thanks and appreciation to the organisers for another very successful Festival.Sadly there was one violent event later in the evening; this seemed to be the result of a personal conflict between two visitors to Newtown. The Police and Community Patrol were involved. Don asked what the noise policy is, as he worries about how loud the Festival is. Tom Law outlined the Council policy. Wellington City Council Consultations Parking Policy. Consultation opened today and will run till April 14th. WCC had a traveling road show on the subject in Newtown Mall this morning. It wasn’t widely advertised and no one at the meeting knew it was going to be there, or attended.Rhona noted that the policy is very high-level at this stage. We recommend that people look at the material on the website. No one had any further comment: Rhona suggested reading the web page and keeping up-to-date with progress on the development of a proposed spatial plan for the city.District Plan Review – this is beginning at the end of this year or early next. Water Warrick is concerned that water metres are coming back into discussion. This has resulted in some suggesting we ‘need’ water metres to pay for replacement of aged infrastructure.A number of views were expressed regarding the pros and cons of water metering. COVID-19 Eileen Brown is working for the Council of Trade Unions developing plans and consolidating ideas for “managing the risk and flattening the curve”.The current situation was outlined, along with common narratives being used to describe the situation and management options. Eileen described then distributed some information.Marion Leighton (Consultant Physician at Wellington Hospital) arrived during this discussion, having been at a hospital meeting on the same topic. She outlined the hospital’s plans for managing an influx of seriously ill patients and also answered questions. Most important thing is to wash hands frequently and thoroughly, cough and sneeze into your elbow or tissues, don’t touch your face, avoid physical contact with others and self-isolate at the first sign of any symptoms. We are in this for the long-term, so make sure you have a reasonable plan. Emergency Management Discussion Neville Carson outlined his background in Civil Defence (previous name for Emergency Management, and introduced “Wellington Conversations” – facilitated conversations on various topics which have been running in Newtown and elsewhere for several months.Neville is organising a meeting to discuss Emergency Management issues on 31 March, 7:30 to 9:30, at Newtown Hall, using a model based on Wellington Conversations. Circus Performers – Steve informed the meeting that on Wednesday evening (18th Mcaarch) in Carrara Park circus performers will be performing with LED Hula hoops. Meeting ended at 8:58

Social Justice Week 2013: Unemployment – the local face of a global concern

- Social Justice Week, 8-14 September, 2013 September 2013 Unemployment affects everyone, particularly young people whose ability to find work has been hindered by the loss of jobs after the 2009 economic recession. Four years on, youth unemployment remains high throughout the world. In New Zealand, 75,000 Kiwis agead 15-24 are not in employment, education or training. For young people on the margins, the repercussions of long-term unemployment can be scarring. Each year New Zealand’s Catholic Bishops use Social Justice Week to consider Catholic social teaching on a specific social justice issue relevant to our society. This year the focus for 8 to 14 September is on ‘meaningful work for the young worker’. Caritas Aotearoa New Zealand has provided resources for Catholic parishes, schools and the wider community. The core booklet Walk Alongside: Meaningful work for the young worker helps us to consider what it is like to be a young worker today and the difficulties young people face as they look for stable work. The bishops also challenge individuals and communities to consider how they can accompany or ‘walk alongside’ the young people around them. Other resources include posters, prayer cards and liturgical resources, as well as a special website on the issue. Now more than ever, young people need the encouragement of their wider community and of the church. The local face of a global concern On his way to World Youth Day last month, Pope Francis talked with journalists about his concern for the impact of the economic recession on young unemployed people. In New Zealand, one in six young people looking for work cannot find a job. This is a concern for the whole community. Work that is meaningful enhances human dignity. It gives people enough to live on and leads to lifelong, secure employment. New Zealand’s labour market has been slow to recover from the economic recession and the number of jobs available is still below pre-recession levels. Young people are often at the end of long job queues. New entry jobs for young graduates are few. A baby blip in the early 1990s means there are now 42,000 more people aged 20 to 25 entering the labour force than five years ago. Fact – 42 percent of all casual workers are aged 15 to 24. Young people tend to work in casual employment with no fixed hours or job security. These jobs tend to be the first to go in times of financial hardship. Many tertiary graduates are struggling to find work in their field of study. In 2012, the Ministry of Education told Victoria University primary teaching students that only a fifth of graduates would find work within a year of graduating. A recent graduate, Nicole Jenness, has applied for more than 60 teaching roles and, after 10 months of searching, has yet to find a teaching job. Pope Francis has said, ‘We have all become accustomed to this disposable culture... With all the young people out of work, even they are affected by a culture in which everything is disposable.’ Government responses such as the Starting-Out Wage and the 90-day probationary period continue to reinforce a disposable culture where young people may be seen as a source of cheap labour and deprived of a just wage. Economic recessions come and go, but the impact of insecure work and unemployment on young people and our community can be long lasting. For young people on the margins, job insecurity and unemployment further pushes them towards disengagement because they miss out on a sense of belonging in society. Reflecting the sentiment of Pope Francis we, as a community, are called to walk together towards a culture of inclusion where the skills and contribution of everyone can be recognised and realised.

The main Community House room and office will reopen on Monday 13 September. From Thursday we will have QR codes at each gate to the Village Green - for use when passing through, using the community garden and compost bins, or running your kids or dogs on the Green. As the Waipapa Road playground is a shared space with our Playgroups, and hirers, we will also put up QR codes for the playground. Following are guidelines for Delta Level 2 when using our buildings as a one-off hirer, or attendee to a function, class or group. Sign in All hirers / hosts must sign in and are responsible for ensuring all attendees of their event / class sign in. We will provide a sign in box for those that do not have the app. The Village Green is also considered a public space and will have its own QR code. Please ensure all parties are aware to scan in if they are using the green or passing through Face Coverings When you are leaving your home at Alert Level 2 you legally must wear a face covering when: using public transport, airplanes (including in arrival and departure points such as train stations and bus stops) and in a taxi or ride-share vehicle visiting a healthcare or aged care facility inside retail businesses, such as supermarkets, pharmacies, shopping malls, indoor marketplaces, takeaway food stores, and public venues, such as museums and libraries visiting the public areas within courts and tribunals, local and central Government agencies, and social service providers with customer service counters. As such we ask that all hirers abide by guidelines below; Public class / event; All hirers / hosts/ customer facing people must wear a face covering at all times. You are asked to advise all attendees of your event / class to wear a face covering wherever possible, except when exercising. Children under 12 are encouraged to wear a mask, but it is not mandatory. If you’re using the building for exercise, please ensure you wear a mask while moving about, but once you have your ‘spot’ you can remove your mask. Please put it back on when you’ve finished class before vacating. We will mark out 2m distances on the floor for a visual guide. Private event; We encourage all attendees to wear a face covering wherever possible, especially if it is hard to maintain physical distance from others. In general, face coverings should be worn whenever you can. The Delta variant is more transmissible by droplets, so face coverings are a way we can protect ourselves and each other. If distancing is difficult, it is mandatory to wear a mask. 50 people maximum are allowed over the whole Hataitai Centre- upstairs and downstairs. The Community House is a much smaller space, so please bear in mind this number will need reducing to provide adequate distance required for everyone's safety. If you are providing food and drinks at an event, everyone must be seated to be served. All high touch surfaces need to be cleaned after use - door handles on both sides of the building entrance door and toilet door, tables and counter tops used. Cleaning equipment will be provided. We will also be arranging additional regular cleaning throughout Level 2. Do not host your event / class if you have cold or flu symptoms or you have been asked to isolate. Please ask those who attend your event / class not to come along if they have cold or flu symptoms or you have been asked to isolate. If you have any reason to believe that you or anyone who attended your class/event has developed covid please let us know as soon as possible so we can discuss next steps and take necessary precautions. Remember; If you are feeling unwell, stay home and call Healthline or your doctor for advice. Even if you have been vaccinated against COVID-19, you should still stay home if you are feeling unwell. Sporting students staying motivated during Lockdown
- College Sport Wellington
- What does the lockdown mean for sporting students? How has it affected them and what are they doing to stay fit and motivated? Two students who were preparing to compete about now were Queen Margaret College’s Mollie Nicol, who has just recently made the Long List for the New Zealand Junior Rowing Team, and Wellington Girls’ College Sports Captain and National 800m champion Emma Douglass, who was recently in top form at the Regional Athletics meeting. We put a few questions to each below. Emma Douglass crossing the finish line at Nationals College Sport Wellington: Please tell us what you were preparing for before the Lockdown? Mollie: I was involved with rowing at QMC and we have been training since September last year till mid-march when we found out that due to corona virus that our Maadi Cup Nationals would not continue. We were only two weeks away until we were heading down south to Twizel to compete. Emma: I was training for the final months of the track season. I was due to go over to Australia in March and also California in April to compete and finish my season. Both of these were cancelled prior. CSW: what you are doing to keep fit and train? Mollie: Once school was cleared, I was able to get an erg from school and take it home so I am able to do some ergs. My dad loves to run so my sister, him and I like to go for runs around the neighbourhood. Before the lockdown, we already had a small gym in our garage that included weights and an exercise bike. There are plenty of options for me to keep fit. Emma: Currently, I am going on runs, changing what distance/ terrain/ pace. Along with that, I have set up my wind trainer so I can bike at home. My gym is also doing online sessions which I am doing twice a week CSW: Please share a lockdown sports practice or training tip for your school mates and others out there in the same situation? Mollie: Something that has helped me during the last week was to get into a routine. I know that it is the holidays but I find it easier getting up earlier and getting it done. In the mornings it is better to do something more challenging as you are fresh and then your afternoon session could be hard or something not as hard but you will still gain from it. Emma: I would recommend that people try to just keep your routine and training schedule as normal a possible. This means your body doesn’t get shocked by an increase or decrease in training. For example, if you train every day, try to do something every day to mimic this. This will also keep you fit throughout the lockdown. CSW: Are you in contact with your sporting friends about the above and are you motivating each other remotely? Mollie: Yes I have been in contact with my friends and teammates and they have asked for some training programmes as they are stuck on what to do. Emma: I mostly train alone but for my training where I’m usually with someone I try to keep in touch to stay motivated. I will also track all the workouts I do on my watch so I can account for everything I am doing. I can also send these onto my couch. After the successful and fun afterwork series—and before you check out for the holidays—we are putting on a training session focussing on compass skills. The training will occur on Kaukau, at 6—7pm Wednesday, 17 December. Our session is aimed at those wanting to learn new skills and techniques, or those with more experience who want to practise their techniques, and is suitable for every ability (kids and adults welcome!). Bring your compass and clothes suitable for the weather, as it can be exposed on the tops. No dogs are allowed on the farmland. The session will be coached by Rachel and Yvette Baker, so please email Rachel at rachel.rosara.baker@gmail.com if you have any questions, or need to borrow a compass. President’s report Committee and working groups As elected committee for 2026 is: Beverley Holder (President) Gerald Crawford (Treasurer) Lachlan McKenzie Jake Hanson Paul Teasdale-Spittle The committee will be supported by working groups to fulfil the club’s many functions. Working groups have been proposed but not confirmed, and are not necessarily permanent—they may be based around time-bound projects. We’d love to hear from you about which groups you think might be useful, and how you may like to contribute. Read the discussion paper and send your thoughts to Lachlan at secretary@wellingtonorienteering.org.nz Discussion paper Awards Congratulations to our award recipients this year. The Endeavour Cup is awarded for development and performance, and the Fortune Cup is awarded for outstanding service to the club. Endeavour Cup Rachel Baker received this year’s Endeavour Cup for her outstanding performances including as part of the New Zealand team at this year’s Junior World Orienteering Championships in Italy. Other nominees were Morag McLellan and Jake McLellan. Fortune Cup Alan Horn received the Fortune Cup. Alan unfailingly provides outstanding support for events, gear, and controlling and planning. Other nominees were Paul Teesdale-Spittle, Helen Hughes, Lachlan McKenzie and Will Vale. Members’ League We will be trialling a members’ league in 2026—a way to introduce some fun competition into events where scores are based on comparative performance, rather than absolute as per race time. Details are being worked through but generally will look like this: For members age 16 or over who run a Red-level course CSWs and OYs will be ‘counting events’ Scores will be allocated based on the formula “Average km rate * (age and gender weighting)” Overall winner: If there are 10 ‘counting events’, we will take your top 6 scores. Starts at 6:00pm and will be finished by 6:30pm CWS CHRISTMAS APPEAL We are dedicating our offering of money on Christmas Day (once again) to Christian World Service (CWS) whose annual appeal is working to Share Food This Christmas. The poorest people are already experiencing the challenges of the climate crisis. Our offerings will help small-scale farmers learn how to grow food and improve their livelihoods in these very challenging times. With the help of our local partners, they will be able to prepare for the more intense natural disasters that come with climate change. There will be special envelopes provided during the Christmas Day service to make a donation; you can put your details on the envelope to receive a receipt from CWS. OFFICE CLOSURE The St John’s Office will close over the holidays starting midday Wednesday 20th December 2023 and reopening the morning of Tuesday 23rd January 2024. During this time there will not be weekly emails, so please check the St John’s Facebook page for any current updates/alerts. The usual Zoom link for joining the services online will continue. Hosted by the Building Community Vision Team YOUTH & FAMILIES PASTOR SECONDMENT Next year Hannah North is expanding our ministry to young people by making connections directly with school students. One of our goals for our St John’s ministry with young people is: Build numbers of youth and children attending and being reached by our programmes. To build relational connections with school students and encourage non-churched young people to join in what we do at St John’s, next year Hannah will be at Scots College 10 hours a week working with the Chaplain Rev David Jackson. This secondment is just for 2024, while the Assistant Chaplain Rebecca Wilcox is on 12 months parental leave. Working within a community of over a thousand young people is an expansion of the St John’s youth ministry, and we will find ways for Hannah’s ongoing ministry to be further supported by others. Are you (or someone you know) interested in working part-time with our Youth & Families ministry team? Let us know if you want to know more about this. GIVING ISN’T JUST SOMETHING WE DO AT CHRISTMAS To keep all we do going strong we have budgeted for an overall increase in congregational giving of 10% for the coming year, and asked to discern God’s guidance for our personal/household giving.
