Actual time (5 hrs) was split across two days, but is reported as a single block here.     • Operation Details Date/Time:  Sat, 30/03/2013 - 12:25 - 16:30 Operation Type:  SAROP Cat 1 People Assisted:  3 Total Volunteer Hours:  28 Three divers went missing from a group of five during a dive near the south end of Kapiti Island. The dive boat they were with lost track of their bubbles, and they weren't towing a marker buoy, after they were swept away from the dive area via strong currents. They surfaced together later and were swept further away from the area and the boat. Coastguard Mana was dispatched to assist in the search alongside Coastguard Kapiti and Westpac Rescue helicopter.     • Operation Details Date/Time:  Sun, 31/05/2020 - 15:00 - 17:00 Operation Type:  SAROP Cat 1 People Assisted:  3 Total Volunteer Hours:  2 A vessel had been calling for a tow from South of Rock Point, Maritime radio picked up the request and rebroadcast but no other vessels offered to assist and Police called Coastguard. As our crew were arriving at the base another vessel coming in from the North heard the radio call and offered to assist. Police requested that Coastguard confirm that all was ok with the tow so we went out and checked.     • The first half of the season, Wellington United couldn't get a win for trying, with six single goal defeats seeing them rooted to the bottom of the table despite having a positive goal difference. A common mantra from the players and fans was the results will come and thats what they have been doing with four wins in a row, the latest a 2-0 win over second place Wainuiomata at Newtown Park on Saturday in the Capital Premier division. It was a satisfying win for United, who had gone done 3-2 in the reverse fixture in Wainuiomata earlier in the season, despite leading 2-0 with 15 minutes to go. Wainui were on a roll having won seven in a row and beaten league leaders Upper Hutt City 2-0 the week before.

    • A big turnout from our guests, Hutt Valley Harriers, which boosted numbers to well over one hundred for this event. Jack Julian continues his success in the B9 grade, winning the 1km race. Josh Nairne won the 2km race, just sneaking under 8 minutes. In race 3, our scratch runner Miles Coverdale ran through to take line honours, one second ahead of walker Andrea Adams. In the 4km event, both of the Lynches ran fastest times in their grades - Susannah the fastest junior woman for the third year in a row, and Aaron the fastest junior man. Jo Doherty was fastest woman, and both walkers walked the same time. In the 8km race, Matt Rogers from Hutt Valley Harriers was two minutes faster than the next fastest runner.

CRV Pelorus took some new recruits off Trust Porirua Rescue (that had been training) and TPR immediately responded to the scene. Light was fading by this stage and finding the dinghy in the dark was very difficult as they did not have any form of lighting or signalling equipment with them, no VHF, and their cellphone battery was dying - an all too common occurance!     • During the month of August, Stokes Valley Volunteer Fire Brigade responded to a total of 13 incidents.  We attended six fires, from the very small (a smoking light-fixture) to the extremely large "4th Alarm" factory fire in Petone on the 23rd August.  We also attended four medical emergencies during the month and there were three false alarms. Even with another fairly significant (magnitute 6.6) earthquake on 16th August, the Wellington region seemenly dodged another bullet and the brigade had absolutely no earthquake-related incidents to attend to.  Let's keep our fingers crossed that that remains the case for many, many years to come!     • Operation Details Date/Time:  Wed, 01/05/2013 - 15:30 - 17:00 Operation Type:  SAROP Cat 1 People Assisted:  3 Total Volunteer Hours:  10 CRV Trust Porirua Rescue responded with six crew to a Police callout.An aluminium dinghy with three men on board had engine failure east of Mana Island.On reaching the scene the vessel Millicent had the dinghy under tow. The tow was transferred to Porirua Rescue and two men were also transferred from the dinghy to increase free board on the dinghy. The dinghy was towed to the Paremata Bridge launch ramp. The two men on Porirua Rescue were dropped off at the Mana Marina Coastguard berth.     • Operation Details Date/Time:  Wed, 30/12/2020 - 12:00 - 12:30 Operation Type:  SAROP Cat 1 People Assisted:  1 Total Volunteer Hours:  3 Whilst returning with a tow job to Plimmerton Boating Club we heard a mayday relay on CH16 from MOC advising vessels in the area of Owhiro Bay that there was a missing/overdue diver in the water, requesting assistance to search for them.  We contacted Police to see if they wanted our assistance to search the area. They requested us to respond to Owhiro Bay and we quickly returned to Mana Marina to take on more fuel and pick up some extra crew.  Whilst preparing to depart we were stood down because the diver was located on shore safe and well.     • Operation Details Date/Time:  Thu, 09/02/2012 - 16:30 - 16:45 Operation Type:  SAROP Cat 1 People Assisted:  2 Total Volunteer Hours:  1 Two swimmers were caught in the tidal flow exiting the channel into Porirua Harbour on an outgoing tide. This pushed them out of the channel entrance towards Goat Point. The swimmers were spotted waving and screaming for assistance and Coastguard Mana was activated by Police to assist. A training crew was already onboard Trust Porirua Rescue in the marina, engines fired up and ready to depart on a training excercise, when the call came through. They were able to depart immediately and were on scene within 3 minutes of the call from Police. The pair finished first and second in the Junior Girls’ National Secondary Schools’ Cross Country Championships at the A&P Showgrounds in Hawera. Sutherland hadn’t beaten McHardy this year, but saved her best for the big stage. “Amy got in front before me. I was running and I was like ‘come on Amy, let’s go, we’re nearly there.’ I think I got a bit of adrenaline or something. I wasn’t expecting to win” Sutherland admitted. McHardy had led all the way. “We both like to take the start and it was a really fast start. We got to the front after about 600 meters. When there was 30-meters to go Ava said ‘well done’ and got past me. We work together, train together and bring out the best in each other. We managed to win the three-person and six-person team races as well which was awesome,” McHardy said. The final time for Sutherland was 11.25.50 with McHardy on 11.27.80. Gabrielle Healy (6th) and Kate McHardy (9th) ensured a Wellington Girls’ sweep of junior honours. A flat start was followed by a downhill section that narrowed out and a short, treacherous, hill climb due to the thick mud and driving rain. “It was really wet and muddy but that made it fun, a real cross country race, a real cool experience,” McHardy enthused. Louise Brabyn (Whanganui Collegiate) was seven seconds adrift in third place. “My favourite training course has eight river crossings and is really fun in the rain. I liked the course,” Sutherland concurred. Both girls are aligned with the Olympic Harriers club. They train and compete in a mixed environment on Tuesday and Thursday nights at Nairnville Park as well as racing most weekends. McHardy beat Sutherland for the Wellington Regional title, but both rely upon coach John Cope for their success. “He makes sure we enjoy it, but when it gets close to competition he challenges us and makes sure we’re putting in the grind,” McHardy said. McHardy first met Cope when she made the Wellington Interregional team while at intermediate. She was fifth in the 2019 Nationals in Timaru and has been the top junior runner in the capital. Sutherland’s parents are eager runners and their daughter got serious about it in 2018. “I had a long-time rival who kept beating me at intermediate. When I beat her the first time I continued to put a lot more effort into it, Sutherland revealed. The next big race on the calendar is the National Secondary Schools’ Road Race in Akaroa, Christchurch in October.     Thank You, Ten - A Musical Celebration

    • In 2024, The Wellington Footlights Society are celebrating 10 years of bringing musical theatre to the Wellington stage, and what better way to celebrate than reflecting on a decade of music, performance and community in our biggest musical revue yet - Thank You, Ten: A Musical Celebration. Thank You, Ten will take audiences on a journey across the catalogue of Footlights shows, performing one musical number from each production the troupe has staged in the last ten years, some in the form in which we know and love, and others with twists you might not expect. Following several challenging years for our communities, Thank You, Ten also aims to celebrate all the joy and support which theatre brings to the lives of so many, and as such Wellington Footlights are excited to be partnering with the Mental Health Foundation for this production, donating $3 from every ticket sold to the charity.

    • Operation Details Date/Time:  Mon, 20/01/2014 - 19:30 - Tue, 21/01/2014 - 23:30 Operation Type:  CG Operation (good samaritan) People Assisted:  3 Total Volunteer Hours:  308 Mohua lost motor power due to diesel problem.  Stern gland taking on water.  Put out a panpan responded to by Southern Cross.  Coastguard called by owner of Southern Cross to take tow as restricted in its ability to manouver within the marina.  Coastgard picked up tow and continued to before the bar, the rafted up.  Crossed bar and stood to as a towed barge left the marina.  Berthed in coastguard berth with yacht alonside.  Then released raftup, pulled yacht into travelift bay to lift out as taking on water through stern gland.     • Important Dates Monday 29 June: Open Evening Wednesday 1 July: Music Evening please note change of date Friday 3 July: End of Term 2 Monday 20 July: Start of Term 3 Wednesday 22 July: Parents Evening (Senior Students) Monday 27 July: Parents Evening (Junior Students) Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern visits WHS Last Friday, as part of the Creatives in Schools initiative, which is enabling our He Kākano students to work with the Royal New Zealand Ballet, our Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern visited WHS. This visit presented the opportunity for the Prime Minister to announce an additional $4 million for the project which will ultimately enable students from 500 NZ schools to work with professonal artists and creative practitioners, benefiting from their specialist artistic knowledge and creative practices. Thirteen of our He Kākano students are involved in the programme which is aimed at enhancing student wellbeing and improving their ‘core competencies in communication, collaboration and creative thinking’, as well as inspiring awareness of careers in the arts and creative sectors. As part of the visit He Kākano shared what they had learned prior to lockdown, demonstrating fantastic memory of their routines and great coordination too. The Prime Minister also met students passionate about the creative arts, taking time to talk to them about their interests and talents.               Important information Breakfast club We are pleased to announce that we are opening up a Breakfast Club at the school from the start of Term 3.  This will run in the canteen each day and will be free to any student who wishes to start the a nutritious bowl of Weetbix. Resources for your mental health Melon Manual is a kete of resources specifically for teenagers’ emotional wellbeing. Supported by the Ministry of Health, the website provides videos and worksheets and advice to support the young people of Aotearoa. You can access the resources here Dyslexia – How you can help WHS Community Education Centre has a 2.5 hour talk with  expert Mike Styles, on Dyslexia – How You Can Help. This is an interactive and participatory session to assist parents and loved ones understand and support a family member or friend who has dyslexia or a similar learning difference.     • Howdy, all – well, crikey – the rest of NZ back in Covid alert level 2, while our Auckland chums are at level 3 – appreciate it must be tough for you guys, having been there before, but we have beaten this thing before, and we’ll do it again – our thoughts are with you all…Meantime, here in the capital, we are asking that everyone does their bit for the Covid war effort – stay home if you are sick, get tested, and PLEASE – scan our QR code when you pay us a visit, and use the hand sanitiser provided; by just following these simple steps, we stand a better chance of avoiding further, or stricter, lockdowns…We have a tonne of fantastic new posters in stock with which to decorate the walls of your home – come take a flick through the racks and find something that fills you with joy – and for a measly $15 – almost too good to be true, eh!?We also have a whole heap of lovingly curated new and second-hand vinyl, CDs and DVDs heading out into the store on the daily, just waiting for you to give it that forever home!We are also doing a US order every 2 or 3 weeks, wait times are WAY down from last year, seem to be arriving in just a week or so, exchange rate pretty favourable – happy to order things in for you, just fire us an email or pay us a visit and we’ll see what we can do for you…Finally – we realise 2020 was pretty tough for a lot of people, but we need you to know that we are here for you, and that music really does help make everything just a little better – we hugely appreciate your support, hope you are doing okay, and would love to see or hear from you soon.Peace out, take care, love on ya XX The Slow Boat Crew XX

    • Operation Details Date/Time:  Thu, 25/04/2013 - 10:00 - 13:00 Operation Type:  SAROP Cat 1 People Assisted:  3 Total Volunteer Hours:  30 CRV Trust Porirua Rescue and Pelorus responded to a Police callout for a dismasted yacht 2 miles south of Mana Island.The yacht had gear failure and the mast, boom and mainsail were hanging over the port side.Porirua Rescue passed bolt cutters to the yacht so they could cut away the rigging. On cutting away the rigging an attempt was made to marker buoy the gear with a buoy from Pelorus, this was unsucessful. Once the gear was freed from the yacht she made her own way under power to Mana Marina attended by Porirua Rescue and Pelorus.     • Operation Details Date/Time:  Thu, 13/07/2017 - 12:15 - 15:00 Operation Type:  CG Operation (good samaritan) People Assisted:  3 Total Volunteer Hours:  16 Day 2 of a major southerly storm in Wellington took it's toll on vessels moored in the channel. We initially received a callout from Police to assist a 15m catamaran who's mooring lines had broken in the main channel. Police ended up putting their own small boat in the water and assisted him. Coastguard Mana then continued on and assessed other moored vessels, finding 2 with broken bow lines. One large launch had a secondary line that was holding the vessel on the mooring, but it was very small so we added a new line to it to hold in the 50kt+ wind gusts.     • In the light of the restriction on public use of many facilities due to COVID-19 and the Ministry of Health guidelines at Levels 3 and 4 designed to slow the spread of the virus, the following decisions have been made: Hataitai Childcare Collective and Community House (HCCCH) has made the decision to close the Community House from 6pm on Wednesday 25 March 2020 till further notice, and to suspend all our Play Groups until further notice, effective from Sunday 22 March 2020.
