    • Amstore Autumn Series underway
      • It was a great start to the Amstore Autumn Series on a lovely day, there were plenty of boats on the water with 8 entries in the A division and 18 starters in the B division. At the start of the day there was a light 10 knot southerly in Evans Bay and a northerly breeze blowing across Ngauranga as well making for interesting conditions.

      • Are you one of the increasing number of cycling daredevils who spend mornings and evenings dodging the traffic on Riddiford Street, outrunning buses in the Adelaide Road bus lane, and watching in dismay as cars try and overtake you on the downhill stretch into the Bay when you’re already doing 50km/h? • Ōtari waits for council nursery decision
      • Is it in or is it out? The current small nursery has little room for hosting visiting groups The current small nursery has little room for hosting visiting groups Ōtari’s Landscape Development Plan has been flagged for axing from the Council’s 2024 Long-term Plan. But Council officers have recommended it stays, given it sets aside $3.1 million for much-needed staff facilities. We will learn this Thursday (21st) if Councillors agree, although there is now hope, given the latest financial advice related to insurance costs, that LTP cuts will not be necessary.

    • Review: First Reserve | "Alice"
      • If you have engaged with the Wellington music scene at all, I’m sure you have heard of First Reserve. Often spotted performing at San Fran, the singer and bassist has just released his latest single, “Alice”. Last week, San Fran hosted a release show featuring a thrilling performance by First Reserve, alongside supporting acts Keira Batten Coogan and Red Necklace. As someone who has seen both the openers multiple times, I can safely say that they never disappoint, successfully building the energy of the crowd and setting the stage perfectly for First Reserve's entrance.

    • Wellington and Porirua buses to use Saturday timetables in January
      • Most Metlink buses in Wellington city and Porirua will use their Saturday timetables on weekdays from 4 to 27 January. Routes 13, 28, 33, 34, 35, 36, 37, 12e, 30x and 31x will operate their normal weekday schedules during this period, while After Midnight services will also operate as normal on Saturday and Sunday mornings Services on routes 81 and 84 between Eastbourne and Wellington are suspended until 29 January. Routes 39 and 32x will also cease operation until 29 January, however, a shuttle will connect Island Bay and Houghton Bay at 10-minute intervals during the morning and evening peaks on weekdays. Metlink has reduced bus timetables in this way to give customers certainty. Because of the national bus driver shortage, and at a time when many of us, including drivers are taking leave, the reduced schedules will help operators meet demand and minimise unplanned cancellations.

    • LGWM: The Gauntlet
      • Hi fishes. Well the LGWM thing was announced supporting the big, most expensive package. As you know I got my issues, discussed in 3-Big-Flaws here. Thought I’d come back and address a few bonus thoughts. First up: The Gauntlet Tunnel. To recap. The selected package aims for trams to Island Bay, frustratingly bypassing Newtown, and a busway to Kilbirnie and Miramar frustratingly attached to a new highway tunnel.

      • A regional park above Shelly Bay on the Miramar Peninsula? Or houses? Or is there room for both? A DomPost report today says that hundreds of new homes could be fast tracked on the Peninsula. Michael Daly writes that iwi Taranaki Whānui and developer Ian Cassels are applying for consent to build 600 to 700 houses on 8 hectares of the former Mt Crawford Prison which closed in 2012.

    • 60 years of Wellington Trolley Buses
      • Strictly speaking, Wellington's first trolley bus was a single 20 kW one from 1924 which ran along the Hutt Road for a while. However, the main fleet of trolley buses began in 1949 with the arrival of 10 Crossley/Metropolitan Vickers 78 kW examples (another 4 of this model also went to New Plymouth). The first route they were used on was was Oriental Bay where they shared the road with trams for 15 months.

    • Hilton Petone 2013
      • Having trained through the off season, and pre-season proper kicking off in early January, the BNU men's first team were keen to trade hurdles, ladders and running shoes for boots, game day and some serious opposition. The 2013 Hilton Petone tournament certainly gave us the opportunity to put our plans into practice. Our group consisted of our neighbours - Island Bay, North Wellington under 19's and our bogey team of last season, Kapiti Coast United.

    • Metlink’s Airport Express set to break 2023 patronage record
      • Eight months since Metlink’s Airport Express exceeded forecast demand, latest patronage figures indicate a new record is poised to be set. 364,191 trips were recorded on the fully electric buses’ first year of operation to 20 July 2023 – 128% of the number expected. With over 320,000 trips already taken in the service’s second year of operation and figures for April and May forecast to be around 36,000 in each month, patronage is set to surpass the 2023 total in just ten months. Greater Wellington chair Daran Ponter say he’s delighted by the patronage growth which underscores Metlink’s commitment to providing efficient and reliable transport options for our residents and visitors alike.

    • Visible and risible
      • There was a shock horror scoop in the Dominion Post today, with the headline Wind farm 'visible from Island Bay to Waikanae'. A leaked report purports to show that the proposed Puketiro wind farm would be visible from all across the Wellington region, and a spokesperson for a group called "Preserve Pauatahanui" said that "the leaked information shows that all Wellingtonians should be concerned".Does this mean that the wind farm will be a dominating presence across the region? Hardly.
