      •   <figure class=" sqs-block-image-figure intrinsic " >  Sitting on the floor of her room, Tania Thompson says she has been working on an art piece for her bedroom wall. The 58-year-old is fond of recycling and often sees the worth in what others have thrown away. The piece she is weaving comes from discarded thin, wooden planks she found around central Wellington. It’s been a while since Thompson had a place to call home, which she could decorate how she liked. For the past two years, Thompson has been couch-surfing, living in her cousin’s shed and on the streets of central Wellington. She’s one of 41,000 people who are homeless in New Zealand. This figure included people who were living out of cars and in garages. But for the past five months, Thompson has been living in transitional housing on Manners St, provided by Wellington Homeless Women’s Trust (WHWT). “I feel really safe and wish I had come here ages ago. I look forward to coming home," she said.   <a href="https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/125008567/wellington-homeless-womens-trust-tenant-looks-forward-to-coming-home" class="sqs-block-button-element--small sqs-button-element--tertiary sqs-block-button-element" target="_blank" > Full Article   Permalink

    • Lester's "do something" plan for housing
      • Candidate for mayor and northern ward of Wellington City Council, Dr Jenny Condie today called Justin Lester’s housing plan a “do something” plan. “Often politicians see a problem and think: “We must do something about this!” Sadly, it doesn’t always seem to matter if what they propose to do will actually work to solve the problem,” Dr Condie said. “Lester proposes to spend ratepayers’ money on a plan that will do nothing to improve housing affordability except for the lucky few who gain rent subsidies. Council must try to avoid adding to rates, which hit people on fixed incomes hardest,” Dr Condie said.

    • Good sports
      • There's a Waterfront Development Subcommittee meeting on tomorrow night, and for once, I'm not going to put myself through all that pain. While there's no single development up for specific debate, this time, feedback is due on the entire draft Waterfront Development Plan, so all the interested parties are having their say.Of the 633 written submissions, 604 were about the future of indoor sport given the changes to Sheds 1 and 6; and in particular, most of these called for the ground floor of Site 10 to become the new indoors sports venue, along the lines of what I've also been suggesting.

    • Rovers Crash Out
      • Zephyr Rovers Chairmen George Nash said it was a sad day for the club after Rovers failed to make the top eight after a 9 - 4 loss to Mercer was followed by a win to Whites. "We looked safe with two weeks to go but we lost three on the trot so we have no excuses". Nash said the club would not be making any rash decisions with regard to the future of Manager Steve Hall. "We don't want to be hasty over our next move" said Nash "so we'll probably sack him tomorrow when we've had a chance to sleep on it".

    • Wellington 2040 - our vision
      • While no one knows for sure, in about 30 years, there are bound to be a few changes. We’ve put together a scenario of what the city might be like then - and included some nice big images for the Council, hoping that they will be as excited by the future possibilities as we are. There is discussion on the Waterfront (like this image of what we think / hope it might be like), as well as discussion on the upcoming Basin Reserve flyover ‘consultation’ and the image that was published by the Capital Times two weeks ago.

    • Weekly Club Roundup - Saturday 23rd June 2012
      • 1, 2, 3! Good wins for our Premiers, Senior 1st and Senior 2nds on Saturday saw Upper Hutt and Avalon head home wondering what hit them! Avalon accused our S2nds of fielding too many players – we are struggling for numbers so too many players are impossible! Our Women’s team returned from Stokes Valley with a narrow loss while both our Colts and Reserve team came second against Avalon and Upper Hutt respectively. Netball was 2-1 with Ories Gold continuing on their winning ways. They have been promoted up a grade and with Epi Lima in devastating form won by over 30 goals!

    • Whither Cuba?
      • Gosh – that was a surprise! Our venerated local broadsheet, el Domino Postale, appears to have gone and written an excellent, thoughtful article on what we need to do with Cuba St. Have they got a new reporter perhaps, one who is actually interested in matters more important than cute doggies or cats stuck up trees? There is hope, at least – keep an eye out on Nikki McDonald. The article raises some serious points, which I think that we have also raised before – what to do with a street whose charm lies in it’s eclectic collection of semi derelict buildings?

    • Wgtn 2040
      • The Wellington City Council has at last started the process of telling you about WGTN 2040, the proposed Vision for the future – 29 years in the future to be exact. It has been a long time coming – a couple of years at least, but this is one of the most important consultations that the Council has ever asked the Wellington public for their opinion on. We would encourage all Wellingtonians to have some input on this – and we would also like to hear your views, so that we can also table a submission from the Architectural Centre.

    • Talking to the Transport Agency
      • I’ve decided that Transport Agency people should be given more chances to meet the public. And we should get more chances to talk to them, too. I met some of them at their public information day on Saturday. Their cynical process of “public consultation” hasn’t worked. But talking face to face is a different experience. Not, though, on the subject of their Basin flyover proposal, which they have been trained to defend at all costs, and for which they’ve created a new set of drawings such as the one above showing a couple sunbathing under the overhead traffic.
