Strathmore Community Base- more community events planned
- Sarah Free
- I had the pleasure of meeting with some of the staff and volunteers two weeks ago and popped along today to the garage sale held from 10 am to 3pm. They are doing a lot with the resources they have and they’d like to do more! For a start they are aiming to have a community event every two months. The next one will be something to celebrate women’s lives and contribution.

Councils back Government decision on Wellington’s Mass Rapid Transport future
- Greater Wellington Regional Council
- Greater Wellington and Wellington City Council today approved the preferred Mass Rapid Transport option for the Let’s Get Wellington Moving (LGWM) programme, the same option endorsed by Government last week. The preferred option, known as option 1, introduces Mass Rapid Transit to the South Coast and continuous bus priority to the East, and focuses on a new Mt Victoria tunnel with dedicated provision for public transport, walking and cycling, as well as upgrades at the Basin Reserve to improve flows and physically separate movements and extend the Arras tunnel. As a package this option moves the most people possible from the southern and eastern suburbs, supports the most housing and urban development of all the options, and makes city streets better for everyone.

The letter we actually needed
- Save the Basin Reserve!
- Now that the NZ Transport Agency has got the letter it wanted from the Wellington City Council supporting the Ngauranga to Airport Corridor Plan, how about they reciprocate and provide the plans they've denying Wellingtonians for the last two years? In fact, if he really wanted to be a champion for the Basin Reserve, pro-roading WCC councillor John Morrison could get nine of his peers to support an extraordinary meeting, where the Council could decide to send a letter to the NZ Transport Agency demanding they release the designs for the Basin Reserve flyover immediately. Now that really would be putting your money where your mouth is! Or is John Morrison only ever a lion when it comes to building roads? read more

Home Invasion – Keeping Yourself Safe at Home
- Age Concern Wellington
- Though rare, home invasions unfortunately do happen from time to time. A recent incident in Karori occurred when the house occupant opened his front door and three masked people charged in, stole from him, and hurt the man. There’s no need to be afraid, but there are a few steps you can take to protect yourself. If someone knocks at your door and you are not expecting a visitor... Source

There’s a new kid on the block…
- Cycling in Wellington
- Opening officially today is “Bicycle Junction”; the latest addition to Wellington’s cycling scene. Brooke from Mamachari and Dan from Crank Cargo have joined forces to open a new urban cycling store in Newtown. They sell a range of bikes – refurbished imports through to Christiania trikes – plus all the accessories one could dream off… including my favourite, cup holders! And once permits have been approved they’ll also be serving coffee… can’t wait!

A City for People
- Decades of inaction have meant house prices are out of control, while old rental properties rot out from underneath us. A whole generation of people are at risk of being forced out from the central city into new suburbs sprawling north, spending hours every day in traffic jams. We believe the Spatial Plan will allow Wellington to plan for the future so that new generations of Wellingtonians can share the city we love, and have a chance to live in a home that is affordable, accessible, healthy and warm.
