Wellington’s Huge Commuter Tide
- Wellington Commuter
- Wellington is an unusual city due to a huge portion of jobs being in the CBD We experience serious “tidal” congestion due to the huge morning inflow of commuters into the CBD and then out from CBD in the evening The peak time pressure on the Golden Mile is huge but otherwise Wellington is quite an accessible city One could rightly say that every city is different but, on the spectrum of city characteristics, Wellington City is unusual in a number of ways.… Read more ...

Review: Medea
- The Wellingtonista
- The Victoria University Ancient Theatre Society’s adaptation of Medea is an unique combination of both the Euripides and the Seneca play – and I must say, I like where it goes. It’s a fresh take on two classical scripts, and they meld together well, adapted by VATS’ Rebecca Drummond and Rebecca Scholtz. The show itself is powerful, focused significantly on Medea’s rise to power as she ruins her unfaithful husband. It’s a tale of murder and witchcraft and bloodshed, and the zingy script works in its favour.

Killing Kāinga Ora
- Wellington Scoop
- The Luxon-led government continues its attack on anything that the Labour Party ever managed to do, with the release of news about the Kāinga Ora housing projects. Most of them, it seems, have been killed off. “Brakes put on more than 370 Kāinga Ora housing developments nationally”. In Wellington the following projects are stopped: Arlington redevelopment and Evans Bay Parade, with other projects stopped in the Hutt, Naenae, Wainuiomata, and Porirua. The list says “paused.” But I know a dead duck when I see one.

Car-nival
- WellUrban
- 's going to be huge, of course. This weekend's Cuba St Carnival is set to be the biggest yet, with some unmissable acts on the Main Stage and even the Courtenay Place bars getting in on the act. The open-ended consent means that its future is secure, and you can get there by bus for only $1 (assuming that there are any drivers available). Some of us are getting very excited indeed about the weekend, and with luck even the weather might come to the party.

In the Museum of Curious Intent
- The Wellingtonista
- When Arlo Edwards approached an art dealer with his work at the age of eighteen, the dealer told him to "come back in 10 years, and then maybe we’ll look at your work". Not content with such a response, Arlo embarked on a somewhat unorthodox curatorial career, and has been putting on exhibitions when and wherever he could for more than a decade. Toi Pōneke Gallery is the next venue for one of his projects, an exhibition of work by 10 local established and emerging artists.

An Apology from KiwiRail
- Tranz Metro
- The events of Monday last week on the Wellington rail network prompted many of you to send us a message. You told us in no uncertain terms you were frustrated - both with the network and the way we are running it. This letter is a reply - to all those who wrote to us and to those who just wished they had. A letter won't make the trains run on time but it is a way of letting you know that we are listening and doing something.

Roxy Cinema
- Reborn as The Roxy in 2011, this iconic Miramar building started life as The Capitol Theatre - a one-screen picture house, purpose built in 1928 to screen silent films. In 1932 the cinema was converted to screen 'talkies', and continued to show films until 1964, when it closed its doors. It then became local shopping centre 'Capitol Court' until falling into disrepair and lying vacant for a number of years.

Hutt Valley Canoe Club
- The Hutt Valley Canoe Club focuses on Whitewater paddling with an emphasis on our gems of local rivers in the region. Regular trips are held on the Hutt Gorge, Whakatiki, Akatarawa and Otaki rivers. We also travel extensively across the North Island, following the releases from the various rivers that are hydro controlled.
