Three lanes into two for the new Buckle Street tunnel
- Wellington Scoop
- Most Wellingtonians rightly believe that the Basin Reserve flyover will be a very expensive eyesore. Some have accepted it with the idea that it will improve traffic flows. But after a careful examination of the Transport Agency’s working plans, it seems obvious that the flyover will not improve overall traffic flows, but will more likely make rush hour traffic worse and cause more accidents.

Hilton Petone 2013

- Having trained through the off season, and pre-season proper kicking off in early January, the BNU men's first team were keen to trade hurdles, ladders and running shoes for boots, game day and some serious opposition. Flyover vote
- Eye of the Fish
- Later today the Council will vote on their support of the flyover. Related to this, an interesting tidbit came out yesterday and almost slipped me by: “Steps to move state highway traffic off Vivian St are among measures needed to ease the impact of a Basin Reserve flyover, Wellington City Council says.” Holy-moly. That’s new. Up until now some Councilors have been willing to admit privately that the way the Ngauranga to Airport “strategy” completely ignores Vivien Street is absurd. But the Council in an official capacity has, as far as I know, never said anything to this effect before.

Result: Capital Punishment
- Olympic Harriers
- The second running of our Capital Punishment mountain event! This year the field size more than doubled to a decent-sized field of 77 finishers. The course is a real mixture of terrain, starting with a few hundred metres of road, moving onto rough farm trails, a fast 4WD downhill track, then the big gnarly but steady uphill grind, and finishing with a rough gravelly downhill track. This year the conditions were excellent: very dry underfoot, a newly graded Old Coach Road, and a tail wind up the hill. This, along with a slightly shorter course at the start, saw Dougal Thorburn finish the circuit in 34:01, nearly two minutes quicker than James Coubrough's time from last year. Second was Graham Pearce and third Stephen Day. In the women, Jo Doherty finished in a time of 45:22, ahead of last year's third placegetter Anne Rose and Katie Jenkins. Dougal and Jo also won the King and Queen of Kaukau awards, with Dougal taking 13:14 to ascend Kaukau, and Jo 17:42.

Fran versus Celia: flyover tactics, closed minds, and a super bureaucracy
- Wellington Scoop
- The Transport Agency’s no-choice tactics to promote a Basin Reserve flyover have evidently appealed to Fran Wilde and her supporters on the regional council’s local-government-reform working party. The working party has come up with two options for local government reform – and they’re both for a super city. They’re no-choice options.

It’s wonderful
- Wellington Scoop
- Shaking, spinning, rotating and swaying. The City Gallery’s new Kaleidoscope exhibition of Len Lye’s kinetic sculptures is unmissably exciting. In fact, all four of the Gallery’s new exhibitions are fascinating. They’re also complementary. Which is some consolation for all the visitors to Te Papa who’ve been puzzled by the national museum’s inexplicable and unforgivable decision to close its entire art space for two months.

Mitigation
- Architectural Centre Inc
- In the case of the Basin Reserve flyover, the Wellington City Council has asked for further “mitigation” of the proposed Flyover (concrete bridge / Option A). For its part, NZTA has also promised some “mitigation” of the effects of the flyover, and says that they will focus on “mitigation” to ensure that the flyover is “integrated”. Trouble is, I’m not really sure that they are talking about the same thing.

Unaffordable? Yeah, right
- Wellington Scoop
- The Transport Agency and the like-minded analysts at the city council are telling us that anything other than a flyover is unaffordable at the Basin Reserve. Which is a reminder that the Agency insisted for years it couldn’t afford to put State Highway 1 into a tunnel under the National War Memorial Park. Then came a political decision, instructing the agency to move the highway underground. What had been unaffordable became affordable, in a flash.
