    • Uni Champs 2016
      • University Champs 2016 was a great weekend, with a lot of fun times and some great results for VURC. Novice Mens’s 8+ Men’s Inty 1x: GOLD Men’s Inty 4+: GOLD Men’s Novice 8+: SILVER Men’s Lightweight 2+: SILVER Men’s Inty 4x+: BRONZE Inty Men’s 4x+ Well done to all who trialled for the Trans-Tasman University team, and a special congratulations to Jack Gilpin, Nathan Oakley and Tristan Gregory-Hunt who were selected to be a part of the men’s 8+! Men’s Inty 4+ We had a great night at Top Hut on finals night and managed not to get too messy. And we only left two people behind in Twizel when the bus left on Sunday morning…I think I’ll count that as a success. (Thanks, Heather, for driving them at break-neck speed across Mackenzie Country and saving the day!) Women’s Tourny 8+ I can’t speak for the rest of the squad, but personally I can’t wait for next year! See you on the water. VURC

    • Easter Camp 2016
      • VURC travelled to the mighty Whanganui for a three day camp over Easter. We made the most of the water time, with all crews making fantastic improvements over the weekend. Possibly even more importantly than the rowing was VURC’s traditional annual toga party. I had never seen a tartan-blanket-toga before, or a green-velvet-toga, but I am fairly certain that everybody should have the opportunity to experience them at least once in their life. There was a lot of dancing on tables and more than a little (accidental?) nudity, and the legendary Waa was passed on to a worthy new Master. Thanks to all the rowers and coxswains, for being your wonderful selves and making the weekend so much fun. Thanks, coaches, for giving up your Easter to coach a bunch of rowdy students (and for being so ruckus yourselves…). And thanks to the committee for making it all possible! See you on the water. • Open Day 2016
      • I think we can officially put Open Day 2016 into the ‘great success’ pile. We had an excellent turnout from both novices and experienced rowers, and Wellington put on an absolute stunner of a day for it! Thanks everybody for coming along! We hope you enjoyed the sausages and the chat, and we’ll see you this week to get stuck into training…

Although having only spent a few weeks under this combination the crew came a close 4th behind Otago University. This was the strongest Mens Champ 8+ crew we have boated in some time and we are looking forward to building on this result next season. Further to this, Victoria University student Luke Watts distinguished himself and was invited to trial for the New Zealand University squad to travel to the World University Games in South Korea. Kate Jordan, Johannah Kearney, Fred Coughlan, Kyle Malone, Harrison Barker, Henry Lee, Jack Gilpin and Brook Walker were all invited to trial for the New Zealand Trans-Tasman squad to compete against Australia in July. This is a great result for Victoria University and we wish these athletes all the best. Victoria University Rowing Club did exceptionally well to have ten members successfully enter the NZU Trans Tasman Team following the announcement on 5 May. Those ten are: Kate Jordan (Womens Eight) Johannah Kearney (Womens Eight) Luke Watts (Mens Eight) Kyle Malone (Men Eigh Henry Lee (Mens Eight) Fred Coughlan (Mens Eight) Brook Walker (Mens Lightweight Four) Jack Gilpin (Mens Lightweight Four) Lauren McAndrew (Womens Eight) Sean Durkin (coach Mens Lightweight Four)
