    • Metlink announces new airport bus service partner and a zero emission fleet
      • Metlink is pleased to announce Mana Newlands by Transdev as their partner for the new airport express bus service launching in 2022. The partnership means that Wellingtonians from across the region will soon have an easy and convenient way to get to the Airport, with a new 7-day bus service set to run from Wellington Railway Station to the Airport in 2022. The service, funded by Metlink and delivered by Mana Newlands by Transdev as part of a six-year contract, will operate on the Metlink network, and will have Snapper ticketing, credit and debit payments by EFTPOS, real-time information and a dedicated fleet of ten new zero-emissions electric buses.

      • <figure class=" sqs-block-image-figure intrinsic " > Come down to support the IBU Shark's first team in their second pre-season game of 2020 this time against Wellington United from the Capital Premier League. This game is a particularly special one as it features Leonardo Villa, who most of you will know simply as Leo, playing for the opposition.  Leo is our head junior coach and is often seen around Wakefield nurturing our 5-15 year old junior and youth players.  For the junior players out there, one of the absolute treats of having Leo around is being able to witness him playing the “beautiful game”. You are unlikely to see a player in our local competitions like Leo, having played to the heights of Serie B in the Italian league over several seasons.  To see Leo gliding about the field directing, intervening and playing defence splitting passes is to see the work of a master.  His feline presence on the field is truly the embodiment of Argentina’s famed Puma, prowling the midfield!   Good luck Leo, but not too much - the Sharks are going to be here to play!     • August 2014: 4 Plinths 5 call for proposals
      • The four plinths are the massive bollards situated on the waterfront between Te Papa and Circa Theatre. It is on this site that the Wellington Sculpture Trust showcases New Zealand sculptural practice with the biennial temporary sculpture installation: the 4 Plinths Sculpture Award. The chosen sculpture will form part of the New Zealand International Arts Festival’s visual arts programme and remain in place outside Te Papa for up to two years.

    • Kennett Brothers inducted into Mountain Bike Hall of Fame
      • The legendary Kennett Bro's have taken their rightful place in the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame! Their list of achievements covers everything from being a pioneer of the sport in NZ, competing on the world stage, publishing, thinking up and organizing events (the Karapoti Classic and Tour Aotearoa ring bell?!) and, of course, being the driving force behind the establishment of Makara Peak and its development over the 20 years since. From the get go, they have mixed mountain biking with a strong conservation ethos which now a common theme throughout NZ. They are a modest bunch - but the "Three Brothers" track name is a tip of the hat in their direction. That is the most they have let us do. Yes, I am one of those old-school types that still prefers a written book to an online presence, and so I’ve been really pleased recently to see the publication of “Wellington Architecture – a Walking Guide“, a new guide book to the architecture of the capital. It’s great! I love it! And I’ve read every word and looked at every picture, from cover to cover.

    • The threat to the Central Library
      • For many of us, the word “library” has comfortable connotations. It suggests rows of books in which to browse, make discoveries and pass them on to friends and family. Beyond being a resource centre for culture and practical information, a typical library is also a community meeting ground and a safe drop-in space for kids after school. It is also one of the relatively few public destinations in town where people don’t have to spend money. At present, the content and function of libraries – and the funding for them – are in flux. Those on higher incomes don’t need or use libraries as much.

    • Wellington’s number two bus route quietly goes electric
      • Noisy diesel buses are a thing of the past on the number two bus route, the first in Wellington to be fully decarbonised following the arrival of the capital’s 55th electric bus. Greater Wellington chair Daran Ponter said the council’s public transport wing, Metlink, was now more than halfway to its goal of having 108 electric vehicles (EVs) on the road by December 2023. “Metlink can be confident of reaching the target, making 22 percent of its buses electric by the end of next year,” Ponter said. “That’s one in every five.”

But Council officers have recommended it stays, given it sets aside $3.1 million for much-needed staff facilities. We will learn this Thursday (21st) if Councillors agree, although there is now hope, given the latest financial advice related to insurance costs, that LTP cuts will not be necessary.

      • In January 2023, the abrupt firing of 19 dancers at Calendar Girls Wellington made headlines. 35 of the dancers who worked there, wrote and signed a letter expressing their concerns over the venue's plans to take 50% of their earnings instead of the previous 40%. The next day, those 19 dancers lost their jobs. This incident sparked a larger movement among the fired dancers, leading them to form FUS - a grassroots organisation that fights against exploitative practices in the adult entertainment industry.
