Weekly Report April 19
- Wellington Runners & Walkers (WRW)
- Hi Everyone New Plymouth Mountain to Surf Marathon Results The new website that Stan had to construct to meet the Council requirements does not yet have the option of members to record their results of events entered. Consequently some outstanding achievements go unrecognised. I have browsed through the results of the above event and hopefully have identified the Clinic members participating.

The Bledisloe Blues @ Kapiti Playhouse
- Kapiti Playhouse Inc
- After years of trying to work a live performance schedule around All Black Tests and Super Rugby fixtures, guitarist Andrew London has decided to try a different approach, and deliberately offer a ‘rugby free’ alternative for those who are either unmoved by the oval ball’s adventures, or are happy to record the game and come out for some pre-match entertainment.

Social Work Perspective
- St Vincent de Paul Society Wellington
- As a Social Worker, I see people in difficult situations, every day. There are gaps in our systems and a multitude of complex factors can negatively impact people. SVdP states simply that the Society ‘Helps People’ and as a Social Worker and part of the team at the Welfare Hub, that is what we do. I advocate, navigate systems, catch tears, challenge, listen, and listen some more to build the relationship and trust to support and shape assistance around each person’s needs and aims. Social Work is often behind the scenes, working with those who feel unseen or who society chooses not to see. This is where the joy and the challenge is.

Mill Creek Wind Farm
- Eye of the Fish
- Mill Creek wind farm is the proposal to build a new wind farm in the Ohariu Valley north west of Wellington, and it borders the other major wind farm project: West Wind, also by Meridian Energy. A self-appointed group of selfish Makara Residents, the “Makara Guardians” led by local Makara resident Jenny Jorgenson tried their hardest to get the West Wind stopped - thankfully they were tossed out in the Environment court. A similar group is also fighting the proposed Mill Creek giant wind turbines, and they’re just as selfish too.

Positives drawn from latest Metlink Satisfaction Survey despite cancellations
- Metlink
- The results of Metlink’s annual independent customer satisfaction survey, which surveyed 2745 customers about their experiences on public transport in the region, will be presented at this Thursday’s meeting of Greater Wellington’s Transport Committee. The survey was conducted in June this year. A record high 96 percent of surveyed Metlink rail customers were satisfied with their journey, while 94 percent of surveyed customers across the whole Metlink bus, train and ferry network were satisfied with their trip, one percent more than last year. Metlink General Manager Samantha Gain said the satisfaction levels were pleasing overall, but acknowledged that since the survey was taken in June, bus service cancellations have increased from an average of 4.5% for the month due to bus driver shortages and absenteeism, to up to 10% on some days, making it difficult for customers on affected routes.

Thalia Zedek (USA) and Ned Collette (AUS) | Vogelmorn Upstairs
- Vogelmorn Community Group
- STRANGE NEWS & HOME ALONE MUSIC PRESENT THALIA ZEDEK & NED COLLETTE NEW ZEALAND TOUR - JUNE 2025 Wednesday 18 June - Auckland Unitarian Church, Auckland Thursday 19 June - Vogelmorn Upstairs, Wellington Friday 20 June (Ned Collette only) - Lyttelton Coffee Co, Lyttelton “For those that don’t know, Zedek has been one of the most compelling players and singers of the last quarter-century of American music” - The Quietus “...Collette turns folk music into something uncanny and gorgeous” - Aquarium Drunkard Auckland’s Strange News Touring have teamed up with Wellington record label and collective Home Alone Music to announce two very special shows this June featuring two incredible artists, Thalia Zedek and Ned Collette. A true icon of alternative music, Thalia Zedek has been part of some of underground independent music’s fiercest and finest moments, including Live Skull and Uzi in the 1980s, and noisy 90s indie favourites Come. Since then, Thalia has become a mainstay on legendary Chicago label Thrill Jockey (Trans Am, Rose City Band) with her brilliant Thalia Zedek Band output. As her label tells it, “Her ability to deliver raw emotions through her vivid stories of loss and hope, strife and triumph is unmatched”. New album The Boat Outside Your Window arrives next month, with new singles Tsunami and Naming Names suggesting this record is set to turn heads and destroy worlds. Zedek has never shied away from mining some seriously desperate emotional terrain - Pitchfork While these days he calls Berlin home, Ned Collette is both an Aussie lad and card-carrying Kiwi. Ned’s early years were spent playing experimental music in the underground venues of Wellington and Melbourne, before he headed off into the wild yonder to seek fame and fortune, or at least some amazing adventures. Seven albums in, his latest record Our Other History features hometown pals Leah Senior, Jim White (Dirty Three), Chris Abrahams (The Necks), and more. “...as rewarding a listening experience as I’ve come across in recent times” – Will Oldham on Ned Collette’s album Our Other History This marks the first time Thalia will have ever graced our shores, and it’s a very overdue return visit for Ned. These shows will be absolutely unmissable, so best not miss them, eh? NOTE: South Island Ned-heads will get their fix too, with Ned Collette performing solo at Lyttelton Coffee Co on June 20! - After a couple of false starts(!!), and with the dropping of the nationwide covid alert levels, Slow Boat is thrilled to finally be able to bring you some form of celebration – the second of three 2020 RSD drops, this Saturday, the 26th September, featuring a nifty, stripped-back instore performance from Auckland indie rock up-and-comers Daffodils, ahead of their show at Meow later that evening, celebrating the release of their excellent “Boys” EP on vinyl, which will be for sale instore! On top of this, you can expect a smattering of limited RSD vinyl and some mighty good cheer as we celebrate independent record stores, music and togetherness!! Transport Minister Simon Bridges: NZTA Intends To Enter Into “Open And Collaborative Process” Over Basin Flyover Aftermath
- Save the Basin Reserve!
- In a letter to the Save the Basin Campaign (in response to one we sent to John Key soon after the High Court decision was announced), Transport Minister Simon Bridges says some encouraging things: The NZ Transport Agency advises me that … it intends to enter into an open and collaborative process with councils and the community to spark new conversations and ideas about the best way to deliver substantive solutions to the congestion at the Basin and other pinch points in the network. I appreciate that you have had a strong interest in this issue over a period of time, and thank you for the time that you have already committed to developing and presenting alternative solutions for consideration. This is great to hear – but there are concerns that the process adopted so far is neither open nor collaborative, and furthermore that the experts who have developed alternative solutions which the Board of Inquiry said deserved further consideration have not been consulted in the wake of the flyover decision. Let’s hope that Minister Bridges’ views, as expressed in the letter above, result in the Regional Transport Committee, City and Regional Councillors, and NZTA officials demonstrating a new openness and willingness to genuinely and widely consult on the Basin, and on the best options for Wellington’s transport network.

RSD - gracias, all!!
- Slow Boat Records
- Crikey, another Record Store Day (two of 'em, no less!) done and dusted for another year, just wanted to offer a massive Slow Boat CHEERS to everyone who contributed to them being a roaring success, especially our instore performers Reb Fountain (and her wingman Dave Khan!) and Anthonie Tonnon - whose wonderful "Leave Love Out Of This" debuted at number 7 on the national charts, and number 2 on the NZ chart - wonderful news!Would also like to thank old mate Pete J at Music Planet Wellington for helping out with backline, soundguys James and Sam, Ziggy from San Fran, to Ben from Flying Nun Records who filmed Reb's wonderful performance (check the clip here!), and to everyone who came down and partook in what was a wonderful, celebratory atmosphere - particularly at the second event, where seemingly endless torrential rain couldn't put a dampener on the festive spirit, as the assembled crowd diligently dodged the drips from the leaky ceiling. Also to those who doggedly queued at the door before opening time to get their mitts on desirable RSD goodies from the likes of Foo Fighters, Fear, Karen O and Willie Nelson and many more - I did find myself thinking just how much more you value something that you make a sacrifice to get hold of - something kind of glamorous about it all!! Some cool stuff coming up in the not too distant future, will keep you posted - keep an eye on our Facebook and Twitter for details! We are bursting at the seams at the moment with some terrific new and used vinyl, CDs and posters - come pay us a visit!!Keep yer powder dry - cheers! The Slow Boat Crew XX

Yan pushes innovation to protect economy
- WCC Watch
- Mayoral candidate Jack Yan believes his policies on creativity and innovation are needed more than ever in light of the recent Fonterra disaster and has released a statement and a new video (speaking in English, te Reo, French and Cantonese, no sign language sadly) highlighting the need for the next mayor to be able to bridge cultures at a global level: Wellington’s innovation can be a safety net when Fonterra-level scares hit If mayors aren’t part of this dialogue, talking to the top 40 cities in the world and opening doors for our exporters, then we’re going to be affected terribly when our nation brand is damaged,’ he says. ‘We have seen real evidence of this week.’ ‘In the meantime, Wellington is the home of companies like Weta and Xero, along with numerous independents¬ has a reputation that can stand head and shoulders above this scandal.’ Mr Yan, who issued his manifesto for the Wellington mayoral election in April, months before his opponents, has remained on message throughout about the need for Wellington to become a global hub for innovation and identifying export champions. Given Wellington’s urban base, those champions were likely to be outside the primary industries. ‘New Zealand is a primary products’ nation and I recognize the sector’s importance. However, this scare shows just why it’s important for cities to back up national economic activity and to have strong brands themselves.’ ‘Wellington is in an enviable place to deliver greater innovation, with high-growth firms and strong creativity, which will be more rigorously grown if I am elected,’ he says. Mr Yan has authored books on branding and has practised in the area since the 1980s. His work at the Swedish branding think-tank, the Medinge Group, has seen him lead the way on international brand thinking, making him better equipped to develop a proper city brand, get Wellington businesses exporting, and being an advocate for them globally. He agrees with earlier commentators, including Prime Minister John Key, that the scare has harmed New Zealand’s national brand. As he predicted in his 2010 and 2013 campaigns, strong city brands will have to come to the fore to promote economic activity in export markets. Mr Yan says, ‘There is a certain level of pride in saying something comes from Wellington, but we haven’t recognized this properly. We have export earners here and by promoting a diverse economy, we can ensure that we have more of a safety net when scandals in our primary sector occur. ‘I have long been concerned since the days of the “New Zealand Way” brand in the 1990s that we were missing the mark on promoting our nation. Even then, I was outspoken on saying that the likes of Karen Walker and Tait were being excluded. Yet Kiwi innovation is unique: it comes from a sense of isolation and independence,’ he recalls. ‘We have export markets criticizing our “100 Per Cent Pure” campaign again. I have to say we deserve every criticism and it is time for cities to step up.’ As they say, never let a serious crisis go to waste. You can watch here.

Merch, baby - MERCH!!!
- Slow Boat Records
- Well, lordy, lordy me - what have we here, then?! After running an (entirely unscientific) Insta poll, we here at Slow Boat have listened to the voice of the people, and have bowed to popular consensus, and had manufactured a limited quantity of marvellous looking Slow Boat hoodies, alongside the regular tee shirts, a new style of (very robust!) tote bags (shall we refer to them as Boat Totes? Yes, I think we shall!) and, for the first time ever - two (count 'em!) varieties of SB trucker caps!! These are available for purchase instore now (my advice - get in quick while we still have a good range of sizes and colours!) so you can be fashion forward, and the envy of your pals. Tees are now $39.50, caps $30, totes $25 and the deluxe hoodies are a still perfectly reasonable $75 - I mean, what price happiness? What price... fashion... Feel free to drop us a line or call (04 385 1330) if you'd like to secure yours, and we'll be seein' ya soon - will have some Record Store Day 2025 related news to share in the upcoming weeks... Roxy Cinema
- Reborn as The Roxy in 2011, this iconic Miramar building started life as The Capitol Theatre - a one-screen picture house, purpose built in 1928 to screen silent films. In 1932 the cinema was converted to screen 'talkies', and continued to show films until 1964, when it closed its doors. It then became local shopping centre 'Capitol Court' until falling into disrepair and lying vacant for a number of years.
