Kia ora koutou During the last two months there has been some great local orienteering. A big thanks to Red Kiwis for an excellent Pokapū regional champs weekend over Labour weekend. This was really well organised, on great maps, and with excellent course setting. I made a big muck up of the night event but totally loved it. Our club members were right behind Red Kiwis too—a big thank you to Gillian and Lizzie Ingham, as well as to Rob Collier for being there every day to help run the finish. Our Wednesday night events have started up and are highly recommended. Our first offering was in Seatoun, planned by Demelza Robinson and controlled by Luis Slyfied. Our Wednesday events are great for everyone, with start times between 6-7pm, and two or three short courses that hopefully don’t leave you at sixes and sevens! Great fun for everyone! About a month ago, friends and I were in Queensland at the Australian Orienteering Championships and associated events—of which there were 7 events in 9 days. We thoroughly enjoyed the orienteering and the camaraderie of staying together in a shared house during that week away. If you’re lucky enough to be heading overseas and get the opportunity to try orienteering in totally foreign terrain and conditions then I thoroughly recommend the experience. One thing I’d like to see next year is a growing and active membership. Membership brings rewards—being more involved in the sport, attending training events, a sense of belonging and making new friends. To that end, come to our AGM and social on Saturday 6 December, which is great chance to connect with others in your sport. And, next year, don’t just tell your friends about orienteering—make it your resolution to bring em’ along! We’ll start with a fun event at 4pm, followed by the meeting at 5pm. The AGM will include the President and Treasurer’s report, and an overview of the year. We will also confirm the draft minutes for 2024. This year we also passed a new Constitution and will need to elect a smaller Committee for 2026: President Treasurer 3 other officers. The Secretary will be appointed from within the Committee. The Committee will also be supported by working parties reporting into the Committee, but these are not elected roles. This is a bit of change, and we’re open to hearing what working groups you think would be useful and may like to be part of going forward. If you would like to stand for the Committee, or have any queries, please contact Lachlan McKenzie, Secretary at secretary@wellingtonorienteering.org.nz This is a chance to celebrate the year, discuss plans, and enjoy time together and great food! A rogaine is also offered as part of the Classic. The event was founded by the Wairarapa Orienteering Club, and the M40 class incorporates the Wayne Cretney Memorial in memory of Wayne Cretney, a Wairarapa member tragically killed in a work accident in 1987.     • Round 1 is done and dusted for the W League team, and we’ve gone through unbeaten, and very pleased to be 5 points clear from our closest rivals Wellington Utd & Palmy North Marist. The last two games of the round saw us face a strengthened Wairarapa at home. We knew this wouldn’t be the same team that allowed us to beat them 20-0 in the Kelly Cup, and we were right. Wairarapa came out to compete, and their shape, compactness and tireless efforts meant we were finding them hard to break down.

• • DIAMONDS MADE TO WORK HARD FOR WIN - WELLINGTON UNITED

    • Diamonds may have come away with a 5-1 victory, but they were made to work hard for it by a determined Seatoun side that was looking for their first victory over United since 2015. It was Diamonds that dominated the early possession and territory and they went ahead in the 13th minute with youngster Pepi Olliver-Bell netting her first goal for the team. After this Diamonds tried to settle into their usual quick short passing game but Seatoun managed to disrupt them and they never really got into their normal rhythm.

    • In the line of an old Abba song, The Winner takes it All, and so it was in the 2008 Wellington Civic Trust awards last night. A friendly Fish-monger sends in this report from the ceremony in Te Papa: The evening started off promptly, no time for drinkies (or Studio Pacific - who missed out on the news they had won the first prize of the evening by a good 5 minutes!), before leaping straight into the Awards ceremonies. First up was the award for best building in Wellington (constructed in the last 3 years).

    • Zephyr Rovers Manager Steve Hall today took advantage of the lack of any decent televised football and took himself to watch Team Wellington play Waitakere at Newtown Park. "I had to get out in the sun but I saw Rikki Herbert there so we were both obviously thinking the same thing" said Hall "that it was a good chance to grab a beer and peruse the skills of some of the best outdoor players in New Zealand. Hall said the only problem was Wellington returned to their previous form and got hammered by 5 - 1.

• • It’s a Renters World, and We’re…Not Living in it?

    • You may have seen headlines telling you that Wellington rental prices are dropping, that it’s a renter’s market, or that with the exodus of public service workers from the capital, landlords are getting desperate. To some extent, that is true, and to a greater extent, it’s not. Salient asked Trade Me about the current perceptions of the rental market. Year on year, the asking price for a property in Wellington was down 2.9%, and since September 2024, Trade Me saw a 28% increase in the number of rental listings in the city. These figures might lead you to believe that rents are dropping. Well, they’re not (in most places). Between December 2024 and January 2025, the median rental price went from $650 to $675 according to Trade Me’s data.

• • Dinghy adrift as storm approaches

    • Operation Details Date/Time:  Tue, 04/03/2014 - 13:30 - 17:00 Operation Type:  SAROP Cat 1 People Assisted:  2 Total Volunteer Hours:  21 Police were alerted to a 4m runabout adrift somewhere offshore to the west of Mana Island after breaking down. Communications were via a mobile phone and once Coastguard Mana were dispatched it was determined that they were in fact closer to Hunters Bank near Pukerua Bay. At the same time a severe southerly storm was approaching Wellington. CRV Trust Porirua Rescue with 5 crew members initially had difficulty locating them due to the inaccuracy of the location information given by the people on the boat. They were contacted via telephone and advised that we would release a white parachute flare to help them determine where we were in relation to them. This helped to refine the estimated position meaning that TPR could close in on the area the boat was drifting. Once closer they were advised by the Coastguard Master to activate an orange smoke flare. This was immediately spotted by the CRV crew approximately 3NM away and as they closed in on the smoke they spotted the vessel. The two men on board were getting cold but otherwise well. The fact that they had a means of communication and flares certainly saved them from a potentially disasterous situation as a southerly storm was moving up the country and expected to arrive within an hour or two. View this email in your browser Help your club stage the ultimate Secondary School Champs! Kia ora <> Orienteering Wellington is hosting this year’s NZ Secondary Schools Championships, from Friday 19 to Sunday 21 July and we need your help to make it an awesome experience for all! Duties will be for a maximum of two hours, likely less, and volunteers run free (subject to the Controller’s approval) at Sprint and Long events. We need everyone’s help, and especially those who hold current first aid certificates or can act as medics. Volunteer roles at events Friday 19 July: Sprint, Kāpiti College/Marine Gardens 11:30 - 4:30pm Event centre setup, car-parking, registration, first aid, on-call medic, Starts, road-crossing marshals, on course marshaling (x2), computer, control collection and pack-up. • • Triple Unit Tow from Foxton to Mana

    • Operation Details Date/Time:  Wed, 26/02/2020 - 11:30 - 15:30 Operation Type:  SAROP Cat 1 People Assisted:  1 Total Volunteer Hours:  16 A yacht that started it's journey from Tauranga, destined for Marlborough Sounds, left Whanganui yesterday afternoon and then ran into mechanical difficulty 21 NM off shore from Foxton Beach. Coastguard Manawatu went out and towed him towards Kapiti Island, where Coastguard Kapiti took over the tow. Coastguard Mana then went out and took over the tow from from south of Kapiti Island and brought him into Mana Marina where he will be able to arrange repair. Because there was no wind they were unable to make any headway sailing into the tide. MR1 was dispatched to to them home to Mana Marina.     • As much as we Wellingtonians are happy to live in a "cold-yet-cultural" city, most of us would have to admit that this "summer" has been pretty gruelling. Which is why yesterday, with it's balmy temperatures and spectacular sunset, seemed to switch so many of us into outdoors mode for one delicious evening. Most of Waitangi Park was humming by about 5:30, but even though the lawn was relatively dry and looking sweetly bucolic with its lush grass and clover, it had attracted a grand total of eleven people, mostly on the berms around the edge.

    • Operation Details Date/Time:  Fri, 22/10/2021 - 21:00 - Sat, 23/10/2021 - 01:00 Operation Type:  SAROP Cat 1 People Assisted:  8 Total Volunteer Hours:  24 Big Ben a 6 metre vessel broke down at Pipinui point after a fishing & diving excursion. Engine would not start. "Sea Patrol" vessel assisted on scene and supplied fuel but engine still would not fire (unknown problem) Big Ben was at anchor and Sea Patrol stood off in support with their tender in the water. MR1 was sent to the scene and started the recovery actions. Big Bens crew was split with 4 on MR1 and 4 remaining on board.     • Operation Details Date/Time:  Tue, 22/02/2011 - 21:00 - 23:50 Operation Type:  SAROP Cat 1 People Assisted:  3 During training a report came in of a dinghy that had broken down up at Pukerua Bay with three people on board. CRV Pelorus took some new recruits off Trust Porirua Rescue (that had been training) and TPR immediately responded to the scene. Light was fading by this stage and finding the dinghy in the dark was very difficult as they did not have any form of lighting or signalling equipment with them, no VHF, and their cellphone battery was dying - an all too common occurance!     Sweet win for UHCF 11th grade team at Easter Tourney

    • Congratulations to the UHCF 11th Grade Storm on a FANTASTIC effort at the KCU Easter tournament. To go through the day unbeaten, score 11 goals and concede only 1 is a brilliant achievement for any team, but to beat Onslow the way they did in that final was outstanding. In the 5 to 6 years I’ve been coaching it was probably one of the gutsiest performances I have seen from a group of kids – they didn’t give an inch, but played hard and fair! Well deserved boys on taking the trophies away this year!!! Important to remember too, these are the twelve best 11th Grade teams in the Wellington District!
