    • Round 1 is done and dusted for the W League team, and we’ve gone through unbeaten, and very pleased to be 5 points clear from our closest rivals Wellington Utd & Palmy North Marist. The last two games of the round saw us face a strengthened Wairarapa at home. We knew this wouldn’t be the same team that allowed us to beat them 20-0 in the Kelly Cup, and we were right. Wairarapa came out to compete, and their shape, compactness and tireless efforts meant we were finding them hard to break down.

    • Diamonds may have come away with a 5-1 victory, but they were made to work hard for it by a determined Seatoun side that was looking for their first victory over United since 2015. It was Diamonds that dominated the early possession and territory and they went ahead in the 13th minute with youngster Pepi Olliver-Bell netting her first goal for the team. After this Diamonds tried to settle into their usual quick short passing game but Seatoun managed to disrupt them and they never really got into their normal rhythm.

    • In the line of an old Abba song, The Winner takes it All, and so it was in the 2008 Wellington Civic Trust awards last night. A friendly Fish-monger sends in this report from the ceremony in Te Papa: The evening started off promptly, no time for drinkies (or Studio Pacific - who missed out on the news they had won the first prize of the evening by a good 5 minutes!), before leaping straight into the Awards ceremonies. First up was the award for best building in Wellington (constructed in the last 3 years).

    • Zephyr Rovers Manager Steve Hall today took advantage of the lack of any decent televised football and took himself to watch Team Wellington play Waitakere at Newtown Park. "I had to get out in the sun but I saw Rikki Herbert there so we were both obviously thinking the same thing" said Hall "that it was a good chance to grab a beer and peruse the skills of some of the best outdoor players in New Zealand. Hall said the only problem was Wellington returned to their previous form and got hammered by 5 - 1.

Kia ora koutou During the last two months there has been some great local orienteering. A big thanks to Red Kiwis for an excellent Pokapū regional champs weekend over Labour weekend. This was really well organised, on great maps, and with excellent course setting. I made a big muck up of the night event but totally loved it. Our club members were right behind Red Kiwis too—a big thank you to Gillian and Lizzie Ingham, as well as to Rob Collier for being there every day to help run the finish. Our Wednesday night events have started up and are highly recommended. Our first offering was in Seatoun, planned by Demelza Robinson and controlled by Luis Slyfied. Our Wednesday events are great for everyone, with start times between 6-7pm, and two or three short courses that hopefully don’t leave you at sixes and sevens! Great fun for everyone! About a month ago, friends and I were in Queensland at the Australian Orienteering Championships and associated events—of which there were 7 events in 9 days. We thoroughly enjoyed the orienteering and the camaraderie of staying together in a shared house during that week away. If you’re lucky enough to be heading overseas and get the opportunity to try orienteering in totally foreign terrain and conditions then I thoroughly recommend the experience. One thing I’d like to see next year is a growing and active membership. Membership brings rewards—being more involved in the sport, attending training events, a sense of belonging and making new friends. To that end, come to our AGM and social on Saturday 6 December, which is great chance to connect with others in your sport. And, next year, don’t just tell your friends about orienteering—make it your resolution to bring em’ along! We’ll start with a fun event at 4pm, followed by the meeting at 5pm. The AGM will include the President and Treasurer’s report, and an overview of the year. We will also confirm the draft minutes for 2024. This year we also passed a new Constitution and will need to elect a smaller Committee for 2026: President Treasurer 3 other officers. The Secretary will be appointed from within the Committee. The Committee will also be supported by working parties reporting into the Committee, but these are not elected roles. This is a bit of change, and we’re open to hearing what working groups you think would be useful and may like to be part of going forward. Originally held in winter, the “Classic” is an endurance event that is both physically and mentally demanding. The event takes the form of a one-person relay with a pivot control and a series of loops—meaning you get the thrill of trying all loops and legs yourself! A rogaine is also offered as part of the Classic. The event was founded by the Wairarapa Orienteering Club, and the M40 class incorporates the Wayne Cretney Memorial in memory of Wayne Cretney, a Wairarapa member tragically killed in a work accident in 1987. • • Boat broken down near Ohau Point

    • Operation Details Date/Time:  Sat, 04/02/2012 - 18:00 - 23:00 Operation Type:  SAROP Cat 1 People Assisted:  3 Total Volunteer Hours:  15 Coastguard Mana was tasked by Police to recover a broken down vessel with three people on board from Ohau Point, south of Makara Beach. When CRV Trust Porirua Rescue arrived on scene it was discovered that two of the people had already been returned by another vessel to Makara Beach. The remaining person was towed back to Mana. The vessel was a 17ft runabout that had experienced mechanical failure.     • Operation Details Date/Time:  Mon, 25/11/2019 - 18:30 - 20:30 Operation Type:  CG Operation (good samaritan) People Assisted:  1 Total Volunteer Hours:  16 We received a call from Trevor Burgess to say that a jetski was taking on water out in the channel and had beached himself. We responded in MR1 to tow him back to Mana Marina but didn't find anyone. He contacted us later to say that he had managed to recover himself by swimming the jetski back to the ramp between the bridges at Plimmerton.     • I hesitate to even bother to post this, as the topic seems so small and the problem is so easily solved, but apparently the Busdriver’s Tramways Union has been “in discussions” for over 18 months on this topic, and they still don’t have an answer. Jesus wept. The incompetence of people in charge! It is all very solvable, for the price of less than $20. Present situation – with intolerably reflective white surfaces inside The problem, dear reader, is that the new buses, apparently only the electrically powered new buses, are “dangerous” at night as there are too many reflections, caused by bright lights inside the new buses, and the driver cannot safely see the road.

• • It’s a Renters World, and We’re…Not Living in it?

    • You may have seen headlines telling you that Wellington rental prices are dropping, that it’s a renter’s market, or that with the exodus of public service workers from the capital, landlords are getting desperate. To some extent, that is true, and to a greater extent, it’s not. Salient asked Trade Me about the current perceptions of the rental market. Year on year, the asking price for a property in Wellington was down 2.9%, and since September 2024, Trade Me saw a 28% increase in the number of rental listings in the city. These figures might lead you to believe that rents are dropping. Well, they’re not (in most places). Between December 2024 and January 2025, the median rental price went from $650 to $675 according to Trade Me’s data.

    • As much as we Wellingtonians are happy to live in a "cold-yet-cultural" city, most of us would have to admit that this "summer" has been pretty gruelling. Which is why yesterday, with it's balmy temperatures and spectacular sunset, seemed to switch so many of us into outdoors mode for one delicious evening. Most of Waitangi Park was humming by about 5:30, but even though the lawn was relatively dry and looking sweetly bucolic with its lush grass and clover, it had attracted a grand total of eleven people, mostly on the berms around the edge.

    • There were good conditions for race with only a light breeze. A slight deviation of the course to avoid a large Marquee meant the turn was a little further out but the GPS users seemed to think the course length was on the money. Fastest time for the male runners was from Levente Timar with a very quick 15:50 (and a personal best for the series). Stephanie Mackenzie was the first woman runner in 18:12. Terri Grimmett lead the walkers home with a 31:06 finish followed by Geoff Iremonger for the men with 33:31. Thanks to the sponsors Lifestyle sports & the Chicago bar for their continuing support and to the helpers at registration and with timekeeping & marshalling.

In particular our new crew man Steve was helping with the testing of lifejackets on the breastworks at the Mana Cruising Club, something in the region of 100 plus lifejackets were tested to confirm that they were buoyant and safe to use.  Some lifejackets failed the test and owners advised to replace them. TPR was deployed and recovered him just on dusk and returned him to Mana base for a checkup by paramedics. He had been in the water for over an hour. Pelorus and TPR returned to the scene to recover his board later. Police activated us and we launched MR2. Nothing found on location. 2 surf boats training in the area reported seeing waka heading back up the channel to Onepoto harbour. Called Police to report this and they confirmed that they were safe and well and had just sent a stand-down. Returned to base.     Sweet win for UHCF 11th grade team at Easter Tourney

    • Congratulations to the UHCF 11th Grade Storm on a FANTASTIC effort at the KCU Easter tournament. To go through the day unbeaten, score 11 goals and concede only 1 is a brilliant achievement for any team, but to beat Onslow the way they did in that final was outstanding. In the 5 to 6 years I’ve been coaching it was probably one of the gutsiest performances I have seen from a group of kids – they didn’t give an inch, but played hard and fair! Well deserved boys on taking the trophies away this year!!! Important to remember too, these are the twelve best 11th Grade teams in the Wellington District!
