He was unable to restart his vessel due to a loose fuel hose. Coastguard Mana were contacted directly and sent out a rescue vessel to tow him back in. Upon arriving at the scene the vessel was able to restart their engine and were escorted back to Mana.     • Operation Details Date/Time:  Tue, 05/01/2021 - 11:00 - 15:00 Operation Type:  SAROP Cat 1 People Assisted:  2 Total Volunteer Hours:  16 7m runabout had steering failure whilst anchored up diving/fishing on the west coast near Boom Rock. They called CG Radio and gave their location as Titahi Bay. MR1 responded and was unable to locate the vessel anywhere in the Titahi Bay area and their phone was out of coverage. Escalated to Police to assist with enquiring about their location (as we had no way of contacting them). Police eventually managed to get a call connected long enough for them to say 4km south of Titahi Bay. We found them 3.6NM (6.6km) south of Titahi Bay and towed them home to Mana Marina.     • Operation Details Date/Time:  Sat, 30/04/2011 - 09:00 - 15:00 Operation Type:  Other People Assisted:  10 Coastguard Mana spent the day on the water with a crew of volunteers to assist the organisers of the Mana Ocean Race Challenge - a 29km paddle for outrigger canoes, kayaks and surf skis that took them from Mana to Paraparaumu Beach. Conditions on the day started off calm with light southerlies, but the wind built to around 20 knots later in the course creating some more challenging seas conditions for the competitors.     Outstanding success for Rongotai Scientists

    • Rongotai College was the most represented school at the NIWA Science Fair in 2023 which is a feat in itself. It exemplifies our "give it a go" attitude which was on display for the judges and the broader Wellington Community. Science Fair Boys The work presented was the culmination of many months of primary research for boys in Year 9 and some innovative product design from our Year 10 students. Projects presented by Rongotai students were really strong and innovative; as a result, we were not only the largest group attending, but also the most successful! In all, 12 awards were made to Rongotai College projects, with some projects winning multiple awards

    • Operation Details Date/Time:  Sat, 14/01/2012 - 16:00 - 20:30 Operation Type:  SAROP Cat 1 People Assisted:  1 Total Volunteer Hours:  40 Coastguard Mana was tasked to search for a missing swimmer at Titahi Bay after a group of swimmers were caught in a rip. Emergency services responded to reports of a group of four swimmers in trouble at about 4pm. Most of the group were rescued but one was still unaccounted for. CRV Trust Porirua Rescue has been searching in conjunction with Westpac Rescue and Titahi Bay Surf Lifesaving Club since 1700, while CRV Pelorus had to turn back due to severe sea conditions. TPR returned to base at 2030 and will resume the search early on Sunday morning.     • Operation Details Date/Time:  Thu, 13/07/2017 - 12:15 - 15:00 Operation Type:  CG Operation (good samaritan) People Assisted:  3 Total Volunteer Hours:  16 Day 2 of a major southerly storm in Wellington took it's toll on vessels moored in the channel. We initially received a callout from Police to assist a 15m catamaran who's mooring lines had broken in the main channel. Police ended up putting their own small boat in the water and assisted him. Coastguard Mana then continued on and assessed other moored vessels, finding 2 with broken bow lines. One large launch had a secondary line that was holding the vessel on the mooring, but it was very small so we added a new line to it to hold in the 50kt+ wind gusts. This enables them to perform to their full potential in exams. We have over sixty senior students who receive SAC. The school receives no funding to employ reader writers.  NZQA pays for reader/writers for externals only. At exam times it is very difficult to cater for the high numbers and we are looking for volunteers to help us out. Morning exams begin at 9am and the afternoon session starts at 1.20 pm. They can vary between 1.5 – 3 hours.   You do not need to know the subject but have equivalent to High School Literacy and have legible writing.  You will not be placed with a student you know. Please email Tash.Stuart@whs.school.nz to register your interest. Staff Success  Michaela Manley, science, music and Year 10 roopu teacher, is a finalist in the Aotearoa Category of World of Wearable Arts with a dress made of inner tubes that have been recycled.  We are all looking forward to seeing her creation on display.     • Kiwis are terrible drivers. Over the holidays, the news has been full of the consequences of our bad driving habits as the dead and maimed piled up across the country. Largely these victims were the consequences of basic driving errors – speeding, badly-judged overtaking moves, hit-and-run crashes, drinking and driving, and failing to put on a seat belt. We kill ourselves on the road at more than twice the rate of the UK and rank as one of the worst performers for road deaths in the OECD. And we’re no better around Wellington’s narrow streets, which is why the much-maligned “spy car” is such an essential tool. In the Wellington region, road deaths and injuries rose 10% last year, bucking the national trend.

    • Operation Details Date/Time:  Tue, 22/10/2013 - 18:45 - 19:30 Operation Type:  SAROP Cat 1 People Assisted:  1 Total Volunteer Hours:  6 A windsurfer who had been out with a group failed to return and was drifting in the water near Tokaapapa Reef unable to get back on his board or make way. TPR was deployed and recovered him just on dusk and returned him to Mana base for a checkup by paramedics. He had been in the water for over an hour. Pelorus and TPR returned to the scene to recover his board later. It had been left behind so that he could be transported quickly to awaiting paramedics for checks at Mana Cruising Club. The board was successfully loacated and recovered back to base. Harbour Ranger Grant Nalder was taken out with the crew in Pelorus to assist with ascertaining any damage to the yacht prior to towing off the rocks.  Yacht was towed to the beach area at Onepoto for later recovery by the owner. These memories are brought to life through images, movies and artefacts. New Zealand lost more men during the 100 days of fighting than any other commonwealth country - 845 on one day alone during the First Battle of Passchendaele, 12 October, 1917. The people of Flanders and, more widely, the people of Belgium have never forgotten this sacrifice, which is commemorated in this very special exhibition. • • Slipped anchor causes collision in Porirua Harbour

    • Operation Details Date/Time:  Tue, 05/02/2013 - 09:00 - 10:00 Operation Type:  CG Operation (good samaritan) People Assisted:  2 Total Volunteer Hours:  5 The Harbour Master requested the assistance of Coastguard Mana to help resolve a situation caused by severe southerly winds overnight.  A catamaran in Porirua Harbour had slipped its anchor and drifted into a trimaran moored nearby.  Both yatchs were caught together and the strong southerlies had caused the trimaran to puncture the cat above the water line. The owners were on board and declined assistance. • • Three men in a dinghy with engine failure

    • Operation Details Date/Time:  Wed, 01/05/2013 - 15:30 - 17:00 Operation Type:  SAROP Cat 1 People Assisted:  3 Total Volunteer Hours:  10 CRV Trust Porirua Rescue responded with six crew to a Police callout.An aluminium dinghy with three men on board had engine failure east of Mana Island.On reaching the scene the vessel Millicent had the dinghy under tow. The tow was transferred to Porirua Rescue and two men were also transferred from the dinghy to increase free board on the dinghy. The dinghy was towed to the Paremata Bridge launch ramp. The two men on Porirua Rescue were dropped off at the Mana Marina Coastguard berth. The electronic scarer was making a lot of noise on a still night and the local residents asked noise control to get it turned off.  We took the Harbour Master and a Noise Control officer out to the vessel to disable it, with the owner's permission.     • KING’S BIRTHDAY– OPEN DAY MONDAY 3RD JUNE, 10AM- 4PM Wellington’s historic Wrights Hill Fortress in Karori will be opening for public inspection again on King’s Birthday, Monday 3rd June. The World War Two coastal battery first opened to the public in 1989 and will be accessible between 10am and 4pm. On King’s Birthday people are invited to self-guide themselves through the tunnels and gun emplacements. The walk usually takes about one hour, so bring a torch with you for some fun! Visitors will be able to explore the 620 metres of underground tunnels with a free map and history pamphlet. They will see the engine room, shell stores, plotting rooms and the huge gun pit where Gun Number 1 used to stand, as well as a replica of the 10 metre-long gun barrel.

• • Two vessels broke off a mooring drifted onto rail bridge

    • Operation Details Date/Time:  Sun, 28/06/2020 - 08:30 - 10:30 Operation Type:  CG Operation (good samaritan) People Assisted:  0 Total Volunteer Hours:  14 Two vessels were "rafted up" on a mooring in the channel. The mooring appears to have broken below the waterline and the vessels were swept onto the rail bridge with the incoming tide.  Coastguard Mana were alerted to a Facebook post a member of the public had posted and went to invetigate. After assessing the situation it was decided to get them off quickly to minimise damage and risk to trains. A callout was activated and a number of people responded to tow them off the bridge and into the marina. Yacht made contact with dock and damaged the steering gear, Yacht drifted into the basin and stranded across 2 piles in front of launches. TAR was out for training and was asked to assist. Yacht owner advised we were not operational but could help by using our tow line and placing crew ashore on the whaarf to pull the yacht away and to the wharf. Line was passed to the yacht and to crew on the wharf. • • Positives drawn from latest Metlink Satisfaction Survey despite cancellations

    • The results of Metlink’s annual independent customer satisfaction survey, which surveyed 2745 customers about their experiences on public transport in the region, will be presented at this Thursday’s meeting of Greater Wellington’s Transport Committee. The survey was conducted in June this year. A record high 96 percent of surveyed Metlink rail customers were satisfied with their journey, while 94 percent of surveyed customers across the whole Metlink bus, train and ferry network were satisfied with their trip, one percent more than last year. Metlink General Manager Samantha Gain said the satisfaction levels were pleasing overall, but acknowledged that since the survey was taken in June, bus service cancellations have increased from an average of 4.5% for the month due to bus driver shortages and absenteeism, to up to 10% on some days, making it difficult for customers on affected routes.

    • Operation Details Date/Time:  Sun, 07/03/2010 - 11:00 - 16:00 Operation Type:  Other People Assisted:  200 Coastguard Mana made an appearance for the Children’s Day Teddy Bear’s Picnic and Fishing Carnival at Aotea Lagoon. We set up a display to provide pamphlets and information on safe boating as well as taking approximately 250 children on boat rides around the lagoon. The day was a huge success with lots of happy children enjoying the nice sunny weather and getting a chance to have a go in a boat, many for the first time ever. Thanks to all the volunteer crew who turned up to help - without the many helpers it would have been tough to keep all those exited children in line! Click 'read more' to see photos.     • A coalition of business owners on Cuba St are petitioning the Council to reconsider its plan to remove 20 car parks along the stretch of road between Ghuznee and Vivian. Organised by (unsuccessful) Lambton Ward candidate and famed Kaffee Eis creamslinger, Karl Tiefenbacher, the “Park It” campaign hinges itself on business owners arguing that losing the 20 car parks will make a significant impact on their profit margins. “The thing to remember is that a lot of people walk here, obviously, and I get stupid statements like, ‘cars don’t spend money, people do’, but cars don’t drive themselves either, so every car brings an extra person to Cuba St,” he told Salient. “You know, we’re selling a low cost product, and we need a lot of turnover, so if we lose something like 10% of our business [by having no car parks], that’s enough to send us under.”
