Weekly Wrap Up (T3, W1)

This enables them to perform to their full potential in exams. We have over sixty senior students who receive SAC. The school receives no funding to employ reader writers. NZQA pays for reader/writers for externals only. At exam times it is very difficult to cater for the high numbers and we are looking for volunteers to help us out. Morning exams begin at 9am and the afternoon session starts at 1.20 pm. They can vary between 1.5 – 3 hours. You do not need to know the subject but have equivalent to High School Literacy and have legible writing. You will not be placed with a student you know. Please email Tash.Stuart@whs.school.nz to register your interest. Staff Success Michaela Manley, science, music and Year 10 roopu teacher, is a finalist in the Aotearoa Category of World of Wearable Arts with a dress made of inner tubes that have been recycled. We are all looking forward to seeing her creation on display. Further details to come!

SOLID DEFENCE SETS UP FIVE GOAL WIN
- Wellington United AFC
- Wellington United Diamonds had their third five goal win in a row on Saturday as the downed Petone 5-0 in a W-League game at Newtown Park. The win means they stay in first place on goal difference, but Palmerston North Marist have managed to close the gap to just one goal with a 6-0 win over Seatoun. It took Diamonds just nine minutes to open the scoring through Charlotte Wilford Carroll. It wasn't long before Jemma Robertson thought she had got on the scoresheet tapping in a cross from Dani Ohlsson, but it was somewhat inexplicably called offside and she had to wait to the second half, getting two goals in four minutes to take her tally for the season to 22.

Review: Twenty Minutes to Nine
- Salient
- am genuinely lost for words, trying to describe Twenty Minutes to Nine. It was nostalgic, raw, grim and witty, heart-sinking and furious and so painfully wise. Absolutely phenomenal. The show is personal even before it starts. I’m sitting in the front of two rows of seats, so there’s no doubt it’ll be an intimate show. Amanda (Santuccione (They/Her), the show’s writer and performer) asks what we’re up to afterwards, if we’d be alright to wait another 5 minutes for the last few people. In the end it’s me, a mother-and-adult-son duo, three other women and Amanda. We chat back and forth about hills and penguins, public transport and spilt beer. Then suddenly, with only the quieting of the house music, it begins.

Prem 2 – OBU v HOBM 10-07-2021
- Old Boys - University Rugby Club
- This is from a new eye in the field who shall remain anonymous for now. A great read I’m sure you’ll agree!! This was submitted a few days after the match but has taken a while to get published. Apologies for that. In the first of two OBU vs HOBM games this weekend the Prem 2’s travelled out to Hutt Rec in search of a win & bonus point to secure a top 4 finish in the pursuit of Ed Chaney. Severely depleted in the front row particularly meant season debuts for Jason Gore from the Righteous Pack & John from the Teddy Bears. Also pulling on the boots in nearly 3 years was Physio Mark Thorne-Alexander.

The Lets Get Wellington Moving Commuter Numbers
- Wellington Commuter
- How many Commuters will a future Wellington’s have and what Mode will they be using? * Lets Get Wellington Moving expects about 17,000 more peak hour commuters will travel into the CBD by 2036 * But there’s a problem because the Wellington City Council predicts many more future residents and so this may mean over 35,000 more commuters * The commitment to handle the majority of future commuter growth by bus and rail public transport means majors increases in the capacity of both are needed Wellington City is facing two huge challenges, how to house more people in a city with the highest housing prices in the country and how to improve transport for all the city’s residents.… Read more ...

Hugh Rennie: No need to spend $45m destroying a public asset
- Wellington Scoop
- It’s four weeks since the irrepressible Helene Ritchie urged me to join a challenge to the Wellington City Council’s plan to demolish the City to Sea Bridge. I declined. Too many other matters already engaged me. But I did read the technical reports disclosed by the Council and found a curious thing. The Council said they recommended demolition. I found they did not. I wrote and lodged a written submission pointing this out. Perhaps I had misunderstood. So far none of the engineers have disputed my submission with me. Two more from Dunning Thornton and then Spencer Holmes (who know the bridge well, having strengthened it after the Kaikoura Quakes) confirmed my main conclusions.

Energy Saving Lightbulbs: Will they help or hinder radio hams?
- Wellington VHF Group
- An interesting point for consideration in Amateur circles; perhaps more in the HF space but definately a subject to be wary of. George Boorer ZL3PN was recently featured in the Otago Daily Times commenting on his experiences with an energy saving lightbulb. What do you think? Is Halogen the answer? Should incandescent bulbs be retained on sale (perhaps more expensively) as a useful alternative for some situations? Or do the energy savers need a complete rethink? Mark Foster ZL1VMF is interested in your thoughts. Please use the Contact Us link to send him your feedback. Also vote on the Poll he has on his site and then keep an eye on it for what others think.... read more

Website Tweaks and Fixes
- Wellington VHF Group
- G'day everyone, A quick note to point out a couple of changes to the website. Firstly, can advise that the Wellington VHF Group position paper on is now available for download. This was missing for a while, and was redirecting people back to the front page. We invite your comments on this document. Also it may have been noticed that the menu structure in the left hand frame of this website has shrunk. As we've been populating the site with more and more static content, it became necessary to activate the 'collapse' option on the menu items - they're still there, you just need to click on the appropriate category and the list of sub-options will appear. read more
