Kia ora koutou During the last two months there has been some great local orienteering. A big thanks to Red Kiwis for an excellent Pokapū regional champs weekend over Labour weekend. This was really well organised, on great maps, and with excellent course setting. I made a big muck up of the night event but totally loved it. Our club members were right behind Red Kiwis too—a big thank you to Gillian and Lizzie Ingham, as well as to Rob Collier for being there every day to help run the finish. Our Wednesday night events have started up and are highly recommended. Our first offering was in Seatoun, planned by Demelza Robinson and controlled by Luis Slyfied. Our Wednesday events are great for everyone, with start times between 6-7pm, and two or three short courses that hopefully don’t leave you at sixes and sevens! Great fun for everyone! About a month ago, friends and I were in Queensland at the Australian Orienteering Championships and associated events—of which there were 7 events in 9 days. We thoroughly enjoyed the orienteering and the camaraderie of staying together in a shared house during that week away. If you’re lucky enough to be heading overseas and get the opportunity to try orienteering in totally foreign terrain and conditions then I thoroughly recommend the experience. One thing I’d like to see next year is a growing and active membership. Membership brings rewards—being more involved in the sport, attending training events, a sense of belonging and making new friends. To that end, come to our AGM and social on Saturday 6 December, which is great chance to connect with others in your sport. And, next year, don’t just tell your friends about orienteering—make it your resolution to bring em’ along! We’ll start with a fun event at 4pm, followed by the meeting at 5pm. The AGM will include the President and Treasurer’s report, and an overview of the year. We will also confirm the draft minutes for 2024. This year we also passed a new Constitution and will need to elect a smaller Committee for 2026: President Treasurer 3 other officers. The Secretary will be appointed from within the Committee. The Committee will also be supported by working parties reporting into the Committee, but these are not elected roles. This is a bit of change, and we’re open to hearing what working groups you think would be useful and may like to be part of going forward. If you would like to stand for the Committee, or have any queries, please contact Lachlan McKenzie, Secretary at secretary@wellingtonorienteering.org.nz This is a chance to celebrate the year, discuss plans, and enjoy time together and great food! Originally held in winter, the “Classic” is an endurance event that is both physically and mentally demanding. The event takes the form of a one-person relay with a pivot control and a series of loops—meaning you get the thrill of trying all loops and legs yourself! A rogaine is also offered as part of the Classic. The event was founded by the Wairarapa Orienteering Club, and the M40 class incorporates the Wayne Cretney Memorial in memory of Wayne Cretney, a Wairarapa member tragically killed in a work accident in 1987.     • A 27 year old man has appeared in the Lower Hutt District Court this afternoon facing a number of charges in relation to an incident in Epuni in the early hours of this morning. Acting Detective Sergeant Mike Eckersley of the Hutt Valley CIB says at around 2:30am this morning, it's alleged the offender gained entry to a Durham Cresent house by kicking in the front door.

    • There were some very close games on Saturday with SMOG 11, 13 and 17 all winning with a couple of points or so. SMOG 17 also had a close game, neck and neck with McLaren’s Daughters until the very last quarter where they were just edged out. SMOG 1 and 2 played eachother for the first time this season with a fab amount of support from the sideline given the weather!

    • The Downtown Community Ministry (DCM) foodbank is almost empty. We’ve seen a 44% increase in the number of food parcels given out in the first quarter of this year, compared to the same quarter in 2010. “The situation is dire, we’re seeing a huge increase in the number of people we’re supporting even though our foodbank is only open 2 afternoons a week”, says Stephanie McIntye, director of DCM.

The music in the short is the work of Grayson Gilmour. who, in 2010 became the first new artist signed to the relaunched Flying Nun label. You have the opportunity to respond in words to the film, and those words are incorporated into the video installation itself, which is open to view here at Downstage between 5-7pm every day.

Total engine failure, all safety gear on board, good conditions. The initial recovery was performed by a fishing vessel with the tow handed to Coastguard Mana once on-scene.     • Round 1 is done and dusted for the W League team, and we’ve gone through unbeaten, and very pleased to be 5 points clear from our closest rivals Wellington Utd & Palmy North Marist. The last two games of the round saw us face a strengthened Wairarapa at home. We knew this wouldn’t be the same team that allowed us to beat them 20-0 in the Kelly Cup, and we were right. Wairarapa came out to compete, and their shape, compactness and tireless efforts meant we were finding them hard to break down.

    • Diamonds may have come away with a 5-1 victory, but they were made to work hard for it by a determined Seatoun side that was looking for their first victory over United since 2015. It was Diamonds that dominated the early possession and territory and they went ahead in the 13th minute with youngster Pepi Olliver-Bell netting her first goal for the team. After this Diamonds tried to settle into their usual quick short passing game but Seatoun managed to disrupt them and they never really got into their normal rhythm.

A friendly Fish-monger sends in this report from the ceremony in Te Papa: The evening started off promptly, no time for drinkies (or Studio Pacific - who missed out on the news they had won the first prize of the evening by a good 5 minutes!), before leaping straight into the Awards ceremonies. First up was the award for best building in Wellington (constructed in the last 3 years).

    • Zephyr Rovers Manager Steve Hall today took advantage of the lack of any decent televised football and took himself to watch Team Wellington play Waitakere at Newtown Park. "I had to get out in the sun but I saw Rikki Herbert there so we were both obviously thinking the same thing" said Hall "that it was a good chance to grab a beer and peruse the skills of some of the best outdoor players in New Zealand. Hall said the only problem was Wellington returned to their previous form and got hammered by 5 - 1.

• • Southerly Storm Mooring Lines

    • Operation Details Date/Time:  Thu, 13/07/2017 - 12:15 - 15:00 Operation Type:  CG Operation (good samaritan) People Assisted:  3 Total Volunteer Hours:  16 Day 2 of a major southerly storm in Wellington took it's toll on vessels moored in the channel. We initially received a callout from Police to assist a 15m catamaran who's mooring lines had broken in the main channel. Police ended up putting their own small boat in the water and assisted him. Coastguard Mana then continued on and assessed other moored vessels, finding 2 with broken bow lines. One large launch had a secondary line that was holding the vessel on the mooring, but it was very small so we added a new line to it to hold in the 50kt+ wind gusts.
