    • Important Dates 24 June : Learning Profiles published to portal 29 June : Wig Wednesday 4 July : Parent Teacher interviews (Year 11,12 & 13 only) 6 July : Music Evening 8 July : Last day of Term 2 25 July : First day of Term 1 1 August : Parent Teacher interviews (Year 9 & 10 only) Congratulations Underwater Hockey Regional Tournament Last weekend we had three Wellington High School teams compete in the Wellington Regional Underwater Hockey tournament.  The teams performed superbly all weekend and never gave up.   Our Junior Boys finished the tournament in 10th place and had their first win of the season.  The Junior Girls finished in 7th place and the Senior Girls finished in 5th place.   Senior Girls qualified for Nationals, to be held in Wellington from 1-4 September.  Well done to all teams and coaches you did the school proud. We’re kicking things off this Wednesday with our afterwork sprints, part of our College Sport Wellington (CSW) Series, which will be followed by forest and farm orienteering in March. Although CSW events are aimed at getting school students orienteering, don’t be put off by the name—courses are open to everyone, and we’d love to see you there. A big thank you to our course planner, Ali Power, and our controller, Sarah O’Sullivan, for knocking our first sprint into shape at Whitireia Campus in Porirua. AGM highlights Congratulations to Morag McLellan, who took out the Endeavour Cup for development, and to Helen Hughes for receiving the Fortune Cup for outstanding service to the club! Beverley Holder was welcomed as the new President of Orienteering Wellington, taking over from Paul Teesdale-Spittle, who has dedicated many years to leading the club. Beverley has been deeply involved, most recently helping steer a successful Oceania organising committee. Draft minutes from the AGM 2024 will soon be available on the website Morag McLellan Helen Hughes Wellington makes waves at Oceania Oceania was a fantastic event, with over 700 orienteers from both sides of the Tasman and further enjoying beautiful courses at Massey University (sprint) and Santoft forest maps of Koitiata (middle), Knottingly (long), and Parewanui (relay). Orienteering Wellington members achieved some impressive results, especially Lizzie Ingham, who reigned supreme by taking first in Women’s 21E for the Sprint, Middle, and Long events. Jake McLellan also shone with a second place in M20E Sprint and Long courses, and both he and Rachel Baker were part of the New Zealand junior teams that won their Trans-Tasman relay competitions. Orienteering Wellington can be proud of hosting a brilliant event for all. A huge thank you to our wonderful volunteers, particularly Helen Hughes, who wrangled the volunteers to ensure everything ran seamlessly each day. 2025 subscriptions now due Members attending the AGM resolved to raise subscriptions by 20% to cover Orienteering New Zealand levies—our first increase in quite some time!     New Zealand International Film Festival 2014

    • It’s less than 2 weeks till The Wellington round of the New Zealand International Film Festival Typical Wellington behaviour at this time often includes - Courtenay Place place being full during daylight hours - people taking no lunch breaks to allow for an extra long lunch break to catch a film - taking a day off work to see 4 films in a row - Taking 2 weeks off work to spend the time in a darkened cinema - Catching up with people you only see once a year at film festival - taking mini trips to other Cities just to see films you missed in Wellington - excessive listening to the Rancho Notorious podcast to see what Dan or Kailey think of a film or special watching tips - running between the Paramount and the Embassy to catch a film - eating while standing in line for a film - trying to guess which film will come back when caught in a timetable dilemma   In light of what will be a wonderful 2 weeks in Wellington, here’s our personal tips for what to catch during the festival. Also trust us if you can see something at Film Festival see it at Film Festival. Don’t wait for a film to  return, for Video on Demand. nothing beats the big screen and nothing beats a big screen filled with fellow film fans, even worse the returning film might be something edited down for timing or some other stupid reason. Heather C   Aunty and the Star People – inspiring, uplifting and she’s a local. Beauty and the Beast – one of the great original classic fairytales which looks to have amazing detail.. Beloved Sisters – for the emotion and passion of two centuries prior.   Tom Beard REALITi: While NZ doesn’t have a stellar track record for science fiction movies, Chad Taylor and Jonathan King make an intriguing team that should bring dark, literate menace to this existential dystopian thriller. Particle Fever: Themes don’t come much bigger than the nature and fate of the universe, so this documentary about the Large Hadron Collider and the search for the Higgs boson should appeal to more than just physics junkies. Goodbye to Language 3D: Godard infamously said that “a film should have a beginning, a middle and an end but not necessarily in that order”. He continues to throw out the rules, not just for the 3D technology normally reserved for popcorn fodder, but for language itself. Tom Ackroyd Boyhood. Because of the idea of the lead aging from 6 to 18 over the course of the story, and because it’s a Richard Linklater picture. Hard to Be a God. Never heard of the director but the NZIFF write-up is irresistible. Under the Skin. Jonathan Glazer’s long-evolving back catalogue points to him eventually doing something extraordinary and I’m hoping this is it.   Runner-up:  Is the Man Who is Tall Happy? I’m a Michel Gondry nut. He can do no wrong. I actually have a crush on him. Sue Tyler The Tale of The Princess Kaguya – for what is film festival without a Studio Ghibli film National Gallery – behind the scenes at the national gallery, it looks like all the things i crave in a documentary The Lady from Shanghai - I love the old restored films that are brought back every year. I still remember the year Rear Window played at The Embassy and despite having seen that film on video many of times it blew my mind. • • It’s a Renters World, and We’re…Not Living in it?

    • You may have seen headlines telling you that Wellington rental prices are dropping, that it’s a renter’s market, or that with the exodus of public service workers from the capital, landlords are getting desperate. To some extent, that is true, and to a greater extent, it’s not. Salient asked Trade Me about the current perceptions of the rental market. Year on year, the asking price for a property in Wellington was down 2.9%, and since September 2024, Trade Me saw a 28% increase in the number of rental listings in the city. These figures might lead you to believe that rents are dropping. Well, they’re not (in most places). Between December 2024 and January 2025, the median rental price went from $650 to $675 according to Trade Me’s data.

The day has been filled with assemblies, reminiscing, excitement, tears and sentiment. To all our seniors, we wish you all the best, whether you are sitting NCEA exams or joining the workforce, whether you are leaving us or returning to WHS in 2020.        Level 3 Art Portfolio exhibition The Level 3 Art Portfolio exhibition is happening in the Art department,  D block, Monday 4 November, 12pm – 5.45pm and Tuesday 4 November 9am-5pm. All welcome. Japan exchange students’ farewell Saaya Nakahara and Saki Sasakawa have been attending WHS since the end of August as part of their exchange from Osaki Kasei, WHS’s sister school in Japan. Below are some of the memories of their experience here. We arrived in NZ on August 30. We have had many experiences in just 2 months. We went to the Climate Change strike on 27 September. We have never been to a strike, so we were surprised that there were so many people. It was a good experience because we cannot join a big event like this in Sapporo. Our most exciting experience was the Ball. We do not have an event like this in Japan. This was the first time for us to go to a dance party. We took a lot of pictures with our friends in the photo booth. Our favourite photo was taken with our year 13 Japanese classmates and Grace. Thank you for giving us wonderful memories!!! Achievements NCEA Art folio exhibitions Folios were exhibited on two Fridays this term showcasing the enormous efforts students have put into their artmaking this year. Many friends parents and staff visited the exhibitions.       Rowing regatta success WHS Rowing have completed in their first regatta of the season: the Queen’s cup regatta. The regatta was held over a 1000m course with all rowers competing to a high level despite the cold and windy conditions. The next race will be on 2 November and is the Norton Cup Regatta.      Floorball  Former WHS student Marie Sundin is transferring from Wellington Floorball Club to Swedish IBF Falun. Last month the International Floorball Federation picked Marie as one of the top three international transfers. Congratulations Marie!

    • <figure class=" sqs-block-image-figure intrinsic " > Masters football registration is now open! Inviting existing and new masters players to join the fastest growing area of Island Bay United! Costs are $285 per player for the season, and we have 5 confirmed teams, ranging from Masters 2 to Masters 5. Each team has a minimum squad of 16 players, although most will carry a few more to allow for injuries and player unavailability. Many existing players are local fathers of our junior members or long time friends of the club. Teams also range from competitive to social, but all teams have a great culture and want to go out and have some fun on the pitch on a Saturday afternoon. New players are welcome as we are trying to build a new team this year, so feel free to contact our Masters Coordinator Rod Lawson. You may have played in the past, have been wanting to give football a go or just wanting to get back into doing something active on the weekends. Let us know a little about yourself and what you are wanting out of Masters football when you contact Rod. Kia ora <> Orienteering Wellington is hosting this year’s NZ Secondary Schools Championships, from Friday 19 to Sunday 21 July and we need your help to make it an awesome experience for all! Duties will be for a maximum of two hours, likely less, and volunteers run free (subject to the Controller’s approval) at Sprint and Long events. We need everyone’s help, and especially those who hold current first aid certificates or can act as medics.     • Operation Details Date/Time:  Tue, 22/10/2013 - 18:45 - 19:30 Operation Type:  SAROP Cat 1 People Assisted:  1 Total Volunteer Hours:  6 A windsurfer who had been out with a group failed to return and was drifting in the water near Tokaapapa Reef unable to get back on his board or make way. TPR was deployed and recovered him just on dusk and returned him to Mana base for a checkup by paramedics. He had been in the water for over an hour. Pelorus and TPR returned to the scene to recover his board later.     • Operation Details Date/Time:  Tue, 22/10/2013 - 19:30 - 20:30 Operation Type:  CG Operation (good samaritan) People Assisted:  1 Total Volunteer Hours:  14 Following the successful rescue of a windsurfer that had been in the cold water near Tokaapapa Reef for over an hour, Pelorus and Trust Porirua Rescue were redeployed to assist in searching for and recovering his board. It had been left behind so that he could be transported quickly to awaiting paramedics for checks at Mana Cruising Club. The board was successfully loacated and recovered back to base.
