Weedy ferns
- Te Papa's blog
- Chris Horne of the Wellington Botanical Society recently sent me a fern frond they collected on one of their trips. Although the frond is small and lacking the diagnostic reproductive characters, I think it is the introduced holly fern (Cyrtomium falcatum). It looks like the shining spleenwort (Asplenium oblongifolium), but the flanges, or ‘teeth’, of the [...]

Man of sorrows
- Te Papa's blog
- Te Papa has a strong collection of Colin McCahon’s early religious works, including three paintings from 1947 that depict events from story of the Passion: Christ taken from the cross, Entombment (after Titian), and King of the Jews. One of the enduring myths surrounding McCahon’s early paintings is that were rejected by critics. This is summed [...]

Indoor community sports centre may force flyover
- While I certainly don't want to give up on fighting to stop the flyover being built at the Basin Reserve, a friend recently pointed out that there is another issue that I had not yet considered. And, it is one that could quite likely lead to construction of both the flyover and duplication of the Mt Victoria Tunnel.

Ten Years in Pōneke: Part Five – Somes Speedrunning

Finding our voices
- Te Papa's blog
- Earlier this week Hongoeka marae in Plimmerton was filled with the sounds of taonga pūoro (Maori musical instruments) – accompanied by the buzzing of sanders and the call of tuis flitting among the flaxes. I was one of twenty Te Papa staff who took part in a three day wānanga on taonga pūoro, tutored by members of Hau Manu.

The Polo ,sun drenched as ever, was no place for the faint hearted with two one point wins - to the Colts and Premiers - while our Senior 1sts’ and Senior 3rds enjoyed comfortable wins, the Reserve side held off a “big” OBU team but losses for our fledgling 80/80s’ and the Elders.

Low-income voters give election feedback
- Downtown Community Ministry
- Low-income voters want support to get jobs was the key message delivered in the Downtown Community Ministry (DCM) waiting room today. Especially those who need ‘a second chance’ because previous criminal convictions are preventing them getting a look-in to the job market. One respondent was emphatic that “people change and we need another shot at a job”.

The Basin Flyover Board of Inquiry Decision Was Clear. Why Are Councils and NZTA Ignoring It?
- Save the Basin Reserve!
- One of the most interesting (and I wish I could say surprising) things about reaction to the Board of Inquiry decision to decline resource consent for a Basin Reserve flyover is how reluctant the New Zealand Transport Agency, many local councils, and flyover cheerleaders in the business community have been to examine what the Board actually said.
