      • The cost of food has gone up 8.4% in the last three years[1] ̶ a bigger rise than the general Consumers Price Index. The high cost of food is reflected in the figures for child poverty that are being widely discussed as part of the election campaigns[2]. “How do people manage?” asks Stephanie McIntyre, Director of Downtown Community Ministry. “We know that it’s a real struggle for some because of those who come to the DCM foodbank – and it’s the same for other foodbanks in Wellington.” “That’s why we’re asking DCM supporters and all Wellingtonians to contribute to the Food Appeal this coming Saturday, 19 November, organised by Wellington Foodbank Coalition members to replenish their stocks of food.”

      • Operation Details Date/Time:  Mon, 28/01/2013 - 22:15 - Tue, 29/01/2013 - 01:00 Operation Type:  SAROP Cat 1 People Assisted:  2 Total Volunteer Hours:  22 A yacht picked up a fishing net in it's propeller at Mana Island on a very calm, still night. Drifting onto nearby rocks on Mana Island, Coastguard Mana were called to assist. They had managed to quickly deploy their anchor to stop them from hitting shore and CRV Trust Porirua Rescue approached and took the yacht under tow.       • Operation Details Date/Time:  Sat, 16/02/2013 - 11:30 - 13:30 Operation Type:  CG Operation (good samaritan) People Assisted:  2 Total Volunteer Hours:  22 A launch with 7 people on board that was participating in the Mana Cruising Club fishing competition alerted CRV Pelorus, who were out training at the time, that they were having issues getting the engine started. Pelorus delivered a battery jump pack to them to attempt to start the engine but it was not powerful enough.       • Operation Details Date/Time:  Sun, 24/04/2016 - 22:50 - Mon, 25/04/2016 - 01:00 Operation Type:  SAROP Cat 1 People Assisted:  2 Total Volunteer Hours:  13 33 foot keeler went aground at entrance to the channel at Ngatitoa. Vessel stuck fast with tide incoming. Vessel still stuck at high tide and would not budge. Mana Rescue 1 was able to secure a line to the vessel and eventually pull her off the sandbar. She was towed to deeper water then made her way to Mana under her own steam. Vessel located, they had sorted their initial problems, escorted vessel back to the bridge launch point. vessel had fuel/engine problems several times on the way in. 3 POB, only 2 wearing lifejacketc, cell phone carried, rang during the initial search but went to voice mail.       • Operation Details Date/Time:  Sun, 01/03/2020 - 11:45 - Wed, 11/03/2020 - 13:45 Operation Type:  CG Operation (good samaritan) People Assisted:  2 Total Volunteer Hours:  726 A 10m yacht had mechanical issues (blown oil seal I believe) and was unable to return to Mana Marina as there was no wind and they couldn't get into the marina. MR1 was dispatched to tow them back in as a non-member tow after confirming they understood that there would be an charge of $280/hr. They were towed back to the breastworks outside Mana Marina.       • Operation Details Date/Time:  Wed, 20/05/2020 - 13:15 - 15:30 Operation Type:  SAROP Cat 1 People Assisted:  2 Total Volunteer Hours:  9 A vessel broke down up towards Pukerua Bay. It was towed back towards Mana but then dropped out in the bay off Plimmerton and told to get someone else to take them in, or they'd pick them up again on the way back from fishing. The vessel appeared to be taking on water so the skipper placed a Mayday call, which Maritime Radio responded to. Police then tasked us to respond to tow them in. Got slammed by "washing machine" at Ohau Point and then ended up with rope in the water, which wrapped around the prop shaft. He anchored up in the bay near Ohau Point.       • It’s less than 2 weeks till The Wellington round of the New Zealand International Film Festival Typical Wellington behaviour at this time often includes - Courtenay Place place being full during daylight hours - people taking no lunch breaks to allow for an extra long lunch break to catch a film - taking a day off work to see 4 films in a row - Taking 2 weeks off work to spend the time in a darkened cinema - Catching up with people you only see once a year at film festival - taking mini trips to other Cities just to see films you missed in Wellington - excessive listening to the Rancho Notorious podcast to see what Dan or Kailey think of a film or special watching tips - running between the Paramount and the Embassy to catch a film - eating while standing in line for a film - trying to guess which film will come back when caught in a timetable dilemma   In light of what will be a wonderful 2 weeks in Wellington, here’s our personal tips for what to catch during the festival. Don’t wait for a film to  return, for Video on Demand. nothing beats the big screen and nothing beats a big screen filled with fellow film fans, even worse the returning film might be something edited down for timing or some other stupid reason. Heather C   Aunty and the Star People – inspiring, uplifting and she’s a local. Beauty and the Beast – one of the great original classic fairytales which looks to have amazing detail.. Beloved Sisters – for the emotion and passion of two centuries prior.   Tom Beard REALITi: While NZ doesn’t have a stellar track record for science fiction movies, Chad Taylor and Jonathan King make an intriguing team that should bring dark, literate menace to this existential dystopian thriller. Particle Fever: Themes don’t come much bigger than the nature and fate of the universe, so this documentary about the Large Hadron Collider and the search for the Higgs boson should appeal to more than just physics junkies. Goodbye to Language 3D: Godard infamously said that “a film should have a beginning, a middle and an end but not necessarily in that order”. He continues to throw out the rules, not just for the 3D technology normally reserved for popcorn fodder, but for language itself. Tom Ackroyd Boyhood. Because of the idea of the lead aging from 6 to 18 over the course of the story, and because it’s a Richard Linklater picture. Hard to Be a God. Never heard of the director but the NZIFF write-up is irresistible. Under the Skin. Jonathan Glazer’s long-evolving back catalogue points to him eventually doing something extraordinary and I’m hoping this is it.   Runner-up:  Is the Man Who is Tall Happy? I’m a Michel Gondry nut. He can do no wrong. I actually have a crush on him. Sue Tyler The Tale of The Princess Kaguya – for what is film festival without a Studio Ghibli film National Gallery – behind the scenes at the national gallery, it looks like all the things i crave in a documentary The Lady from Shanghai - I love the old restored films that are brought back every year. I still remember the year Rear Window played at The Embassy and despite having seen that film on video many of times it blew my mind. So to not see anything Orson Welles would be a crime against cinema Bonus Track The Kingdom of Dreams and Madness – behind the scenes at Studio Ghibli the year that Miyazaki Hayao was completing his last film The Wind Rises and Takahata Isao worked on The Tale of Princess Kaguya The post New Zealand International Film Festival 2014 appeared first on The Wellingtonista.

      • October is here - and to get into the mood for Halloween and our Spooky Disco we're kicking off October with a Spooky Screening of Cult Classic - "Carnival of Souls (1962)" - Thursday October 3rd - Free Entry - Starts at 7:30pm Bar & Restaurant (Smoked & Pickled) will be open from 3pm for pre-show and during-show kai --- A young woman (Candace Hilligoss) in a small Kansas town survives a drag race accident, then agrees to take a job as a church organist in Salt Lake City. En route, she is haunted by a bizarre apparition that compels her toward an abandoned lakeside pavilion. Made by industrial filmmakers on a small budget, the eerily effective B-movie classic Carnival of Souls was intended to have “the look of a Bergman and the feel of a Cocteau”—and, with its strikingly used locations and spooky organ score, it succeeds. Herk Harvey’s macabre masterpiece gained a cult following on late-night television and continues to inspire filmmakers today --- See you there

      • Maybe I’m being subjective here, but a show playing “Man or Muppet” as house music is bound to be good fun. And Sandwich Artist was! A heartwarming and silly musical, that poked fun at the genre conventions while being a genuinely well-put together show, with a lot of love and just a bit more to it than only sliced bread. The story follows Sammy Rye (Phoebe Caldeiro), an unrecognised sandwich genius working for an unnamed sandwich chain, who’s unorthodox, off-menu sandwiches get her fired, despite how good they are. She gambles it all on a bus ride to Wellington, where a fellowship is formed with a despondent carrot farmer (Catherine Gavigan-Binnie), a butcher with attachment issues (Anna Barker), and a strangely shifty baker (Dylan Hutton). Phoebe and Jack McGee worked together on a story that does a lot with very little: only 6 major speaking roles and minimal props or set.

We came alongside to check they were ok and they couldn't get their engine going. They thought they would be able to, so we carried on with the other job. On the way back we passed them and they asked for assistance which they agreed to. We returned after dropping off the other vessel and towed them home to Mana Marina. (b)    Junior Surf - Sunday is Junior Surf day during the season from October to March.  Preparation for Sunday sessions is essential with a keen eye for detail.  You will need to assemble a ‘sign-in’ team to – 1.    Manage and maintain the Junior sign in sheets; 2.    Undertake second hand clothing sales; 3.    Ensure clothing samples are available; and 4.    Assist with clothing orders when necessary.  5.    Ensure lanes are booked at WRAC for the 200m Badge and Pool Champs. 6.    Manage the 200m badge process. Lifeguards are required to return lifeguard uniforms if they are no longer lifeguarding. ADDITIONAL COST:  Hi-Vis Red Vest $25, Hi-Vis Pink Vest $15 and Competition Beanie $15  All club members are required to purchase and wear a hi-vis vest when training and competing, as these are mandatory.  Athletes will need to purchase a Competition beanie and have a Hi-Vis Red Vest for carnivals, as these are mandatory for competing. - - - - -  U7s don't require to purchase competition beanies as they don't compete in carnivals. U7s can purchase either a Red or Pink Hi-vis vest to wear.  - - - - -  Pink vests can be purchased by clubbies to wear for training, to keep their red vests for Carnivals.   <!-- --> 200M BADGE (must be refreshed every year) 200M BADGE (must be refreshed every year) Keep swimming, Keep swimming . . .  All clubbies should be swimming - we don't teach athletes to swim. As we are in the business of saving lives and not risking them, swimming skills go hand-in-hand with surf life saving. Therefore we require Junior Surf members to attain this award so they can satisfy the mandatory requirement to compete with paddle boards in the Junior Surf Carnivals. A safety requirement is that children aged 9-13 years (U10 - U14 age group) must be proficient swimmers and have a 200 metre safety badge. This is advisable for U9s but compulsory from age 9 (Under 10s).  In view of the beach environment in which our activities are carried out, every effort should be made to ensure that all children have some swimming proficiency. It is expected that as children progress through their age groups, their swimming ability increases.  Children are not taught to swim at ‘Junior Surf’ Sunday beach sessions. Life Saving is an aquatic sport and it is strongly recommended that children participate in swimming lessons. Pool swimming is essential to develop the strength, fitness and confidence that they require to negotiate surf conditions. Children who swim regularly prove to be the most capable in the surf and ultimately gain the most from participating in a Junior Surf programme. The 200m safety award must be refreshed every year.       • Operation Details Date/Time:  Sat, 26/12/2020 - 09:10 - 16:00 Operation Type:  SAROP Cat 1 People Assisted:  2 Total Volunteer Hours:  75 A 15m yacht broke its rudder approximately 2NM west of Mana Island whilst crossing to the South Island. MR1 was tasked by Police to tow them home. By the time we got to them the wind had got up to 25-35kts and they had drifted 7NM west of Mana Island. We towed them back in challenging conditions and put them at anchor just outside the Mana bar, as they were unable to cross it at low tide.       • Operation Details Date/Time:  Tue, 05/02/2013 - 09:00 - 10:00 Operation Type:  CG Operation (good samaritan) People Assisted:  2 Total Volunteer Hours:  5 The Harbour Master requested the assistance of Coastguard Mana to help resolve a situation caused by severe southerly winds overnight.  A catamaran in Porirua Harbour had slipped its anchor and drifted into a trimaran moored nearby.  Both yatchs were caught together and the strong southerlies had caused the trimaran to puncture the cat above the water line. The owners were on board and declined assistance.
