Lifting up the most marginalised during Lockdown 2021 Just as we did in 2020, Lockdown 2021 has seen us working together once again, to ensure that the most marginalised are supported at this challenging time. From DCM kaimahi, to our team of health professionals, to our wonderful supporters - here members of team DCM talk about their work supporting the most marginalised during the latest lockdown. Natalia Outreach team Natalia and Joanne headed out on outreach together during lockdown. “We had a pair on outreach every day during lockdown, following up on notifications sent to us from the council or the public. We had way more notifications in the three weeks at levels 3 and 4 than we had had in the previous entire month. During lockdown, everyone on team DCM works together, doing whatever it takes to support taumai* during these challenging times. Members of our Outreach team have manned the 0800 number, been scribe support for kaimahi who were on the ground, supported on-site sessions, and delivered food and welfare checks, all on top of following up on notifications. Members of other teams have also gone out with us when we have needed support. Joanne has been a fantastic member of team DCM for some years now; she is currently part of the Aro Mai Housing First team out at the Hutt. One afternoon during lockdown, Joanne and I were doing street outreach around the Wellington CBD. We had some notifications to check on, and as we were walking back to base we came across a taumai who everyone at DCM had been trying to find during the week – we wanted to get him into the emergency accommodation (EH) that had been booked for him. With appropriate social distancing, Joanne and I were able to bundle him and his blankets up and to walk him about a kilometre up the road to the EH where he happily checked in. It helped that Joanne bought him some coffee, sugar and milk and promised him that she would deliver a food parcel to him the next day; this was enough incentive for him to stay. It was a job very well done, and at last we were able to head back to the office. Just before we got to Dixon Street who did we see, but another taumai who everyone at DCM had been looking for and trying to get into the accommodation. After a bit of convincing (and half of Joanne’s cheese scone – boy she’s good!!), he too turned around and followed us up to the accommodation and happily checked in. What a long, but successful day that one was! When the rest of the city goes in to lockdown, DCM and our NGO colleagues continue to fill the void that other agencies and businesses leave when they close their doors. For example, people can contact MSD case managers by phone, but what if you don’t have a phone or any money to buy one? People who have no fixed abode and lose their Eftpos cards can’t access their money because the banks are closed and so they cannot go into a bank to order a new card. Rather they would have to log in to internet banking (a barrier for most of the people we work with) and have a bank card sent to their address (another barrier for many taumai). In these real life lockdown examples, DCM has stepped in to give people cell phones with credit, and to organise for benefits to be sent to DCM’s MMS account and taumai given DCM Eftpos cards in the meantime, so they can access their money. We leave the safety of our own homes and safe bubbles, to continue to offer face to face, daily support for people who cannot access some basic human rights, because those who provide the services aren’t able to offer a solution that meets the needs of their most marginalised clients.” George Aro Mai Housing First team George and Jay load up the car with food parcels to be delivered to taumai during lockdown. “I joined the team at DCM in June, so I was still a fairly new team member when we went back in to lockdown. We were immediately paired up with a bubble partner; I was paired with Jay and the two of us worked together throughout the lockdown period. I would begin my working day by checking flags and emails, before heading out to pick up Jay. We always had one in the front and one in the back when we were together in a car. We would arrive at DCM at our allocated time to load our food parcels into the car. Jay and I would make a plan as to where we should head first – delivering food parcels, checking in on someone who is isolated, ensuring people have their money cards, or getting a phone to someone who doesn’t have one. I would drive, Jay would sit in the back and keep checking our list of addresses and phone numbers for the taumai who needed our support. We called taumai when we arrived or we knocked. People were so pleased to see us and thankful for the food and social contact. DCM had allocated a scribe for the day to each pair bubble, so we would phone our scribe and get them to type up any notes for us into the database, or do any research we needed done. Often extra things came up, like one man who we were delivering a food parcel to who told us he needed his prescription renewed. We were able to sort this over the phone.   When we were not going out to connect with taumai, we spent a lot of time working to get others into emergency housing. We connected people with the health and other supports they needed, supported them with budgeting and access to money, and found out things for them, like if they needed to go to court under level 3. We were involved in many meetings by Zoom. We were every bit as busy during lockdown as we would be on an average day at DCM, and we were able to provide the same level of support, safely – by being creative, committed and kind.” Delena Sustaining Tenancies team Delena is part of the Sustaining Tenancies team, working with vulnerable tenants at risk of falling back in to homelessness and delivering DCM’s community connections programme. Photo by Nikki Parlane. “During the lockdown period, DCM was divided into different bubbles. I enjoyed being in a bubble with Tabitha from the Aro Mai Housing First team. This was a great opportunity to get to know someone from another team. We would start our day by planning it out geographically – figure out who we needed to visit and where they lived to make things as smooth-sailing as possible. Food was definitely an important support for taumai during lockdown, and we were able to take food parcels to those who needed them, leaving them at their door. It can be a challenge for taumai to prepare their own meals. It’s not just the skills, but often they don’t have access to even basic items like can-openers. We had two taumai in their own bubble; I made it my mission to get them an appropriate food parcel so they could eat together. They have been a good example of how our taumai support one another, how important this has been during lockdown, and how a simple thing like preparing a meal together can give them such a sense of achievement. One other thing we discovered all over again was that our taumai were desperate for someone to talk to.  Some of them would be calling over and over again on the 0800 number, and we knew they needed the reassurance of a visit to settle them. We were able to speak with them at a safe distance during lockdown. It’s in their faces – you can always see in the eyes of our taumai how important the time we spend with them is to them.” Sophie Lead Dentist Sophie ran a dental session at DCM as soon as we moved back to Level 2, providing emergency treatment to those taumai who were in the most pain. “At any level of lockdown I am just on the other end of the phone. We can triage taumai's needs and from what is being described, I'll quickly be able to tell if they need an urgent appointment at the hospital or if we can put a band aid on in the form of antibiotics, until DCM is able to open again. Fortunately emailing prescriptions has been made much easier nowadays. And as soon as we were back at level 2, we dentists were able to get back to DCM to run emergency dental sessions for those in the most pain. Taumai have been absolutely amazing, working in with DCM's level 2 safety guidelines, and as always, the people we're seeing here don't have easy access to dental care. Photo by Nikki Parlane. “At DCM, we were one of the few organisations able to continue to support the most marginalised people in our city face to face during alert level 4. We know that our taumai are even more vulnerable and isolated at times like this. How do we respond as an essential service, when others have closed their doors? The great news is that taumai were able to engage with us on our 0800 number, with some in-person mahi delivered at a safe distance.  Another key focus for us has been to ensure taumai have access to the COVID vaccine. Offering the vaccine at DCM during alert level 4 was challenging, but also absolutely necessary. We know how very vulnerable these people are to the Delta variant.  And yesterday, we were able to offer a third vaccine day at DCM, with even more of the most vulnerable receiving their first or second dose of the vaccine. If there are any ways we at DCM can ensure taumai are not even more marginalised as a result of COVID and lockdowns, we will search them out and deliver them. This has always been DCM’s kaupapa, and is what we are all about. We know this is why so many of you support our mahi, and why you have stepped up again during lockdown 2021, donating money and food so that we can carry on.” The Wellington community Together we can end homelessness During lockdown, taumai like Mahir were so appreciative of the groceries we were able to leave for them on their doorsteps. Lockdown 2021 has again reminded us that the people of Wellington really do have our backs, and the backs of our taumai. A number of you have made donations to DCM during this time, to enable us to continue to do the mahi which members of the team have shared with you here. During the lockdown levels, DCM has provided far more food support to the most vulnerable people than we usually would – and as a result, our foodbank shelves have been emptied. Many of you have understood this, and stepped up to help. From the Freemasons Charity, the St John’s Trust Op Shop and St. John's in the City who provided extra dollars for us to purchase food, to New World Chaffers who, when they received a large order from us, provided all of the items as a donation. Ngaio Union Church opened their doors to people who wanted to donate food items for DCM to re-stock our foodbank; the two women seen here with minister Sue Brown travelled all the way from Miramar where the Grind Health & Fitness gym had organised a collection. Ka mau te wehi! Last weekend, our friends at Ngaio Union Church opened their doors for local people to bring in food donations to restock our shelves. Yes, Lockdown 2021 has provided many examples of how the Wellington community comes together to support DCM and the people we work with. line-height:150% !important; } } Together we can end homelessness Changing lives one smile at a time This month we have been marking the 5th birthday of the DCM Dental Service. During the birthday week, we offered daily dental sessions, sometimes with a difference. Rāhina/Monday: Monday’s session was taken by John and Emily; they saw several taumai with complex lives, who had not been able to be treated for their high levels of dental pain anywhere else. M had had his jaw broken, with the resulting metal plate adjacent to problem teeth causing him great pain. He had been referred to the hospital, but was not able to go there due to anxiety and addictions. The team at DCM worked to come up with a solution. We arranged for him to come back to DCM the next time that John Buckerfield took a dental session here. John spent an hour and a half with M, talking him through the treatment and successfully extracting the tooth. M also received fillings for other teeth. He left proudly showing off the extracted tooth, and with antibiotics and a plan for his recovery from John. Later in the day he was happily chatting and in a good space. H had a bad abscess and was in a lot of pain. He struggles with his addictions, and was very proud that he had managed to stay drug-free that day so that he could see the dentist. John was able to numb the area and treat the abscess in one appointment. H left pain-free and not needing further work. Rātū/Tuesday: On Tuesday, for the first time, one of our dentists headed out with our team to see taumai in their new communities and housing complexes. DCM has supported D over many years. He recently saw Sophie at DCM; she discovered he had a bad infection that needed urgent treatment. This time she was able to check on his progress in his own community, also explaining how a referral for dentures could work to better improve his oral health. N has recently been housed in the Berhampore area. He hasn’t seen a dentist in a long time and appreciated the chance to see Sophie at Berhampore Centennial Community Centre. Utilising a little side room, sterilised instruments, a dental and periodontal chart and torch, Sophie assessed N’s sore teeth and gums and could feel where any potential holes were located. N looks forward to a follow-up appointment at DCM. Rāapa/Wednesday: David took the very first session at the DCM Dental Service in March 2016. He has been a regular through all of the five years, and was back to take a session during our birthday week, supported by dental assistant Hazel. We definitely kept them both busy. Although DCM has supported T over many years, he had never seen a dentist at DCM. It had been a difficult week for T - not only was he experiencing pain but he had issues with his housing, and had been at a tangi the day before. David was able to extract two teeth, which made a big difference to T. Rāpare/Thursday: Once again, a line-up of people in pain with nowhere else to go for treatment made for another busy day. S is an older Māori man who is staying in emergency accommodation. He recently had a toothache that got so bad he took the tooth out himself! Still sore and with a number of other issues, he saw dentist Sunjna who treated infected roots as well as completing another much-needed extraction. S was so happy to have all his dental issues treated in one appointment. "I love the atmosphere at DCM," reflected dental assistant Issie at the end of the day. "The energy, the singing, the taumai... The highlight today, as always, was being able to offer people relief from pain. The challenge? Today again reinforced for me how difficult it is for taumai here to access support elsewhere. They may be referred to the hospital or other supports, but because of their anxiety, addictions, a whole range of barriers, they cannot get there and continue to live in pain. It's great to be part of the team in this place, where taumai do feel safe and are able to come and receive our support - and to leave pain-free." Rāmere/Friday: A is a refugee from Africa; for some years he has cycled between backpackers, motels and periods in temporary housing. A experiences a lot of dental pain. Last month, he saw a dentist at DCM for emergency treatment of his most urgent pain and issues, including a much needed extraction. He returned for another appointment this week, expecting further extractions. Dentist Laura was able to restore two of his front teeth, which he had assumed would need to come out. A was absolutely delighted to be able to retain his smile; he left praising the “angel” dentist who had made such a difference to him. DCM taumai have so much to contend with in their lives, the emergency dental work they are able to receive at DCM is truly a life-line, and in some cases a life-saver. We acknowledge all of the dental professionals who have made this possible over the last five years, Kaye and Maurice Clark who purchased this building with its dental rooms for DCM, and our supporters who donate money, product and skills so that we can offer this service to the most marginalised people in our community. Together, we have achieved something very special. <!-- --> Bringing a smile to the community We ended our very special week of celebrating the 5th birthday of the DCM Dental Service with seasonal kai. We all came together to share kai and to acknowledge one another and the taonga which this dental service has been for our taumai. How appropriate that the community of dentist Morris Wong, the Wellington Anglican Chinese Mission, should provide kai, along with EKTA, Good Bitches Baking and some Pasifika delicacies lovingly prepared by the family of our kaimahi, Nani. A smorgasbord of delicious food from different cultures, enjoyed together in the sunshine at DCM. <!-- --> Another reason to smile Many of you know and love Te Amo, who DCM has supported for a long, long time. Te Amo featured in DCM’s 50th birthday photo exhibition. He has worked in our foodbank for many years and is now our longest-serving staff member. As Te Amo grows older, and is able to work less hours, he has been looking for other ways to spend his time, so that he can thrive in his own community and in his retirement. We were excited to hear recently from Anne. Looking to downsize, Anne needed to find a new home for her beloved piano, which she has been playing since she was 7 years old. We immediately thought of Te Amo. He is a talented pianist who has learned to play by ear. You may have even seen him around Wellington where he serenades the city whenever he can find a piano to play – including outdoors in Frank Kitts park. It was great to see Anne's piano gifted to Te Amo's local community centre; he can now play whenever he wishes. Thanks Anne and we know you've found a new friend in Te Amo! The new year also marks a new beginning for DCM; it is our great pleasure to introduce our new Director, Stephen Turnock. Of Ngāi Tahu descent, Stephen brings 20 years of experience in the social service sector, working at both government and community organisations. In his most recent role as General Manager – Operations of the Porirua Whānau Centre (one of six Family Social Service Centres in New Zealand), Stephen oversaw a team of social workers, counsellors, a youth team and a family violence prevention group. In addition, he managed the social housing portfolio, providing sustainable housing for whānau in the Porirua region. Having led projects such as the Whānau Ora Education Initiative and the Porirua Tiaki Tangata Violence Prevention Collective, Stephen has also successfully cultivated numerous partnerships with local iwi, community service providers and public sector organisations. I’m very excited and honoured to be leading an organisation that is passionately supporting the most marginalised people in our communities, whilst also advocating for the resources and supports needed for them to thrive. In my first weeks here, I have taken the opportunity to sit back, observe and build an understanding of what DCM does and why this organisation has been so successful. I want to build on the awesome mahi which has gone on here before me. I also look forward to working closely with the wide range of partners and supporters who form part of the 'together' in our tag-line – 'together we can end homelessness'.” <!-- --> Connecting and being lifted up over the holiday period Over recent weeks, many of us have taken a break and enjoyed some lovely days out – while on holiday elsewhere in Aotearoa, or here in our own city. Our taumai don’t often get an opportunity to head away “on holiday”, but we have been keen to lift them up in other ways at this time. Thank you to all those of you who provided some money so that taumai could enjoy a day out over the summer. Here we share some photos from last week when we were able to treat a group of men to an outing to Strike bowling alley, followed by a Turkish lunch together in Petone. The men loved getting out and meeting new people, and for some, it was their first time bowling. Taumai and kaimahi alike agreed that it had been an “amazing” day and a great way to start a new year. Over the holiday period, our kaimahi shared their favourite moments of 2020 and their hopes for our taumai for 2021 via our Facebook page. You can enjoy reading them again - or for the first time, by visiting DCM’s Facebook page here. <!-- --> New year, new look, new hope Last year we shared with you Joanne’s story, and reflected on the role which kaiawhina – people with lived experience of homelessness – can play on team DCM. Recently three of our kaiawhina were lifted up by a styling session at Dress for Success, one of many organisations with a kaupapa that totally meshes with DCM’s. Their vision is of a world where women do not live in poverty, and are treated with dignity and respect. We hear from Fiona – “It was the first time ever that I have had someone dress me. I loved it; it was fantastic. My self-confidence was out the gate, and it was so good for my self-esteem. I have been working at DCM for almost a year now, but the others have joined the team more recently. So it was great for them to have some new gear, to feel so positive about the future. I can’t tell you how much it has meant to me to have this job, and I just love it! I can be working in Te Hāpai in the mornings, interacting with taumai. I’m there to listen, observe and support. In the afternoons, I may be out with other kaimahi on home visits. We have a lot of taumai who have recently been housed, and we go in to support them. We’re all part of the solution to homelessness. And the work we do here at DCM is such a big part of that. line-height:150% !important; } } Latest stories and updates from DCM The end of an era A letter from Stephanie Stephanie and Kaye Clark at this month’s DCM AGM Tēnā koutou katoa As many of you will know, my time as Director of this very special organisation, DCM, will come to an end in December. I want to thank you all for your support, and to challenge and encourage you to continue your commitment to the most marginalised people in the years ahead. During my time at DCM, our focus has been on one key marginalised group – those who are experiencing homelessness or who are at risk of homelessness. We have adopted the tagline “together we can end homelessness”. One of the highlights of my time as Director has been the way in which this “together” has grown, with so many individuals, groups, businesses, funders and agencies joining us in our commitment to supporting the most vulnerable to thrive. I also want to pay particular tribute to our taumai themselves, for the courage they display when they “pick up the paddle” and join us on a journey to sustainable housing and greater wellbeing.   Many things have changed in the past 17 years, and much has changed in the landmark year which 2020 has proven to be. With more of the most marginalised people now newly housed, or in emergency housing while they wait to move in to their own home, we must ensure that these taumai are supported to sustain their housing, and do not fall back in to homelessness. I always enjoy sharing stories with you, and this month it has been my pleasure to share the story of Joanne, one of our peer support workers. I have a particular passion for peer support work; it provides an opportunity for those who are now stably housed to obtain employment, while at the same time supporting the newly housed to settle in their homes and sustain their tenancies.   Thank you so much for your support of DCM, and of me. Email Matt at matthew@dcm.org.nz <!-- --> Joanne's story Joanne with Arthur at his whare. We shared Arthur’s story with you in 2018. Arthur has now been housed for more than two years. "I was brought up in the Hutt Valley, and it was my mum and dad who gave me a heart to help others. But when I was about 8 years old, our mum left. I ran away when I was 11, and lived rough for a while. One of my friends told her mum that I was staying on the streets, and she took me in. I really didn’t like anything about school as a teenager, so I left when I was 15 and got a job. I did all sorts, but I most enjoyed anything that involved working closely with people. I first heard about DCM when my sister Regina started working here. She used to volunteer me – “My sister will do it!” - usually without asking me first. I began volunteering at DCM, driving the old DCM van, picking up goods for the Foodbank Appeal, and making sure the many volunteers at the DCM Bookfair were fed well.  After a while I decided to take a 3 month sabbatical from my job because I really loved what DCM does, and wanted to be more involved. That was in 2018 - and I've been here ever since. I have done all sorts in my role as a Peer Support worker at DCM - filing, driving, cooking, working in Te Hāpai, outreach and home support. I love going into people’s homes and helping them with their basic cleaning and life skills. We used to turn up to T’s place and his whole house would be filled with bags of clothing and rubbish. You could hardly walk in to the place. I started by cleaning his kitchen. After a while, he began to look forward to us being there, and would work alongside us. Sometimes he just needed someone to talk to. With another taumai, W, we would sit down with him and his keyworker. We would just sit and listen to him. Now when he comes into DCM he wants to talk; whereas before that he would come in and wouldn’t speak to anyone. Many of our taumai have similar experiences to our peer workers; this is why peer support is a great thing. I recently completed a peer support course at DCM, and now I am working as a peer support worker with our Aro Mai Housing First team. Taone asked me whether I wanted to do peer support mahi out in the Hutt. I had moved back to the Hutt just before lock-down, so the timing was perfect. I am back in my own community and I love it. But the thing I miss most is being in Te Hāpai. Having that face-to-face contact with all our taumai, every day, is such a special privilege. I know that DCM wants to raise money to pay more Peer Support workers to work alongside taumai who are newly housed or who need support to sustain their tenancy. What would I say to anyone thinking about supporting this work, or to taumai who are thinking about applying for a Peer Support role at DCM? I think it would be the best thing that you have ever done! Taumai are more likely to gravitate to peer workers as they know that we have had the same lived experiences. I love absolutely everything about my job. My favourite moments always involve interactions with our taumai. Before we closed Te Hāpai one Christmas Eve, I stood by the door and as each of our taumai walked past, I said “Give us a hug!” And I gave everyone a hug. Some of them said to me “I smell” but I said “So what?” And some of them cried, because they had not been touched for years – no physical contact with anybody. That was a revelation to me. Another favourite moment was when M came in. I was sitting watching him and he looked really, really down. This was a long time before he got his own whare. I walked over and hugged him and hugged him, until he was ready to let go. I could see all the taumai around us watching. They’ve seen the way he has shouted abuse in the past. But they had also seen what DCM is about, what our kaupapa is. DCM will never give up on the most marginalised people, and we are all so fortunate to be part of something so special." This month the NZ Herald spoke with DCM’s Natalia Cleland about some of the successes which came out of lock-down for our taumai, including the numbers who were able to move in to emergency housing and on in to their own homes. Natalia also had an opportunity this week to speak on TV One’s Breakfast show, making the point that emergency housing is not a long-term solution, and calling for more permanent homes: "We need more social housing, we need the government to keep building...we need landlords who have rentals who can provide their house for community housing, coming to a service like ours where we can support their tenancy for as long as it takes for them to thrive...we need harm-reduction housing...we need a whole range of housing options." It has been a very special month at DCM. Many of you have been following the journey our taumai have embarked on, enroling to vote, discussing the issues and practicing voting. The polling booth at DCM during election week capped months of activity designed to inform and motivate taumai to have their say. More than 100 taumai showed they counted when they voted at DCM, and many others voted in their own communities. And yes, for many of them, it was the very first time they had voted. We know you want to hear much more about how this has gone, more than we can share in this brief update. And so we invited DCM kaitautoko (supporter), Lee-Anne Duncan to spend some time with us during election week and to help us tell the story. Lee-Anne spoke with several taumai, and you will enjoy reading their reflections. Click here to read this story! And here we also introduce you to some more taumai who voted at DCM. Pete was the very first person to vote in the General Election at DCM’s polling booth. Pete has been supported by DCM for many years; he is now housed and our wonderful Sustaining Tenancies team work very closely with him. Pete had never voted before. Rochelle has begun doing some paid work at DCM this year, and this has made her think about the example she is setting to other taumai. “This was the first time I have voted, even though I’ve always encouraged my children to vote. I’ve been thinking about our taumai, and seen how easy voting has been for them. I wanted to take part, as they have been, to help set an example as a peer support worker. My kids said ‘Good on you mum’! It felt really, really good to vote, and have my voice heard.” Tony grew up in Iraq, and has faced many challenges in his life. English is also not his first language. Aileen from DCM’s Aro Mai Housing First team is Tony’s keyworker, supporting him to settle in to a home and to work through other issues so that he can thrive in all aspects of his life. Aileen was able to go in with Tony to support him to vote. Tony was very proud, keen to have his photo taken and happy for us to share his photo with you. Many of you know and love Te Amo and so you will understand how thrilled we were that he was able to vote here at DCM. Te Amo has voted before, but has sometimes found the experience difficult and frustrating. At DCM's polling booth, he was in a place he knows well and had the support of people he knows well, to ensure that his voice was heard. <!-- --> Celebrating with Seasonal Kai Voting week at DCM ended with a special celebration, and an acknowledgement of the courage of taumai who had voted for the first time ever, or for the first time in a long time. This day was chosen for kōanga seasonal kai, when the community comes together to share food and mark the change of season. This time the kai was provided by the Press Hall food court vendors. It was a very fitting way to lift up all of those who had voted, and all those who had supported them to do so. <!-- --> Foodbank appeal – can you help? DCM Christmas Foodbank Appeal Saturday 21 November 2020 Here at DCM, we are very reliant on the two large annual Foodbank Appeals to keep our shelves stocked. However this year, the winter appeal was unable to proceed, as it coincided with the COVID lock-down. This year’s Christmas Foodbank Appeal will therefore be even more important than ever. We need a large team of volunteers to play a variety of roles on Saturday 21 November – can you help in this way? line-height:150% !important; } } After a number of years of homelessness and, more recently, sleeping rough for a year, the future looks bright for Steven Cooking up a smile After a number of years of homelessness and, more recently, sleeping rough for a year, the future looks bright for Steven. The team at DCM have him back in a home of his own, and looking forward to getting back to work and smiling again. Steven in his whare Last year, Steven was sleeping rough, mostly in “the coves” along Wellington’s waterfront, where he felt safest. Steven qualified as a chef at 18 and worked in Australia for 20 years or so before coming back to New Zealand in 2005, often heading up busy kitchens. But back in New Zealand, things were not so good, and Steven found himself on the street, staying in different boarding houses and hostels until eventually he ended up sleeping rough on the waterfront. Instead of working in restaurants, he was now sleeping outside them, taking advantage of their heaters when they were on. “That’s where I’d go every night. It’s the safest place – much better than a tent in the bush. I’d drink to keep me warm and put me out at night so I could sleep in the cold. That was the only reason I drank – I don’t drink much now because I don’t need to.” He doesn’t need to because he’s now permanently housed in his own one-bedroom whare up in Karori, thanks to DCM and Te Aro Health. The Te Aro Health nurses, the DCM Dental Service and DCM’s volunteer physiotherapist Jeff have all been part of the team working with Steven to get him housed and well. Nurse Bronwyn and DCM kaimahi Kat continue to work together to support Steven When he was sleeping rough, Steven began coming into DCM “a lot – I was constantly on the move and this was the only place I could come and chill out and keep warm.” He’d also come in to talk with the team at DCM about how he could get off the street. They helped him onto the social housing waiting list. And then, at the end of last year, Steven was handed the keys to his new flat, and the team from DCM helped him to get together the furniture and items he needed for his home. “It was just like heaven. It was a load off my mind because you’re hyper-sensitive and aware when you’re outside doing it rough. You’re always aware, even when you’re sleeping. Moving in was a load off my mind. I could start planning ahead again and I could start thinking about getting back to work. If I hadn’t had DCM working with me, I reckon I would have been waiting three or four years." The next thing Steven plans to get sorted is his teeth, with DCM’s Dental Service having referred him to the hospital to get false teeth. “My teeth had been great till about 10 years ago but then they went real quick. I have a great smile, but I just didn’t smile with my teeth the way they were. I can’t wait to get false teeth and become a grinning idiot. It will give me so much more confidence to get back into looking for work. I want to be able to walk into an interview and give them a proper smile.” That work will likely be back in the kitchen, because cooking is what he does and unsurprisingly, having a kitchen again is Steven’s favourite thing about having his own flat. The first thing he cooked in his new whare? “A big roast pork with orange Beauregard kumara. I candied up the kumara with brown sugar and garlic, then added a little butter at the end. Delicious.” To read more of Steven’s story, click here. <!-- --> As you know, DCM is committed to ensuring that our taumai* have a voice – at DCM, in our community, and in Aotearoa New Zealand. Next month, our taumai will be able to vote in the General Election, right here at DCM. Despite the complexity of operating at Level 2 for much of September, we have continued to enrol as many taumai as possible, and to provide training and practice voting sessions – all with the support of the lovely team of Janet, Erin and Bridget from the Electoral Commission. Supporting taumai to enrol K is a 48 year old man who has been in and out of housing and often rough sleeping over the past 15 years. He has not been able to vote without an address, and voting in elections was not a major concern for him when he had so much going on in his life. Just before lock-down, DCM got K in to emergency accommodation and he is now on a waiting list for his own whare. K popped into DCM for a cup of coffee at Te Hāpai this month, asked about the enrolment forms there, and decided to get himself on the roll for this year’s General Election. K is looking forward to voting at the mobile voting booth at DCM for the first time in 15 years, especially as this year’s election will be held the day before K’s 49th birthday. A is a 40 year old Māori man who has not voted since 2005. He has been in and out of different homelessness scenarios, from rough sleeping, to the Night Shelter, to boarding houses and backpackers. In February 2019 he finally got his own Wellington City Housing whare and he has been doing well since. A came into DCM where he found out just how easy it is to enrol; he is now enrolled for the Te Tai Tonga electorate. He can’t wait to vote right here at DCM for the first time in many years. Explaining the referendum process C is a 37 year old Māori woman who has a lot going on in her life, having to deal with multiple addictions and mental health issues, which have seen her in and out of homelessness scenarios over many years. She is now in her own whare and working with DCM’s Sustaining Tenancies team. When the DCM and Electoral Commission kaimahi were able to show her how voting works this month, C decided to enrol to vote. She wanted to cast her vote immediately; we had to explain that voting wasn’t open quite yet! L is a 42 year old Māori man who is currently staying in emergency accommodation and working with DCM’s Aro Mai Housing First team. He didn’t think he’d be able to vote this year, as he doesn’t have a permanent address – until DCM staff explained that he could use DCM’s address. L was very excited and wanted to know who all the candidates are for the Te Tai Tonga Māori electorate. He too is looking forward to voting for the first time in years – right here at DCM. *We call the people we work with taumai, meaning to settle. line-height:150% !important; } } March update from DCM - together we can end homelessness COVID-19 Supporting our taumai at this most challenging of times What a month it has been – for DCM, our taumai, and all of New Zealand. Is it just us, or does the first half of March seem so long ago, almost like we were living in a different world? Here at DCM, we are totally committed to finding new and different ways of working, so that we can continue to support people who are experiencing homelessness or who are at risk of homelessness throughout the COVID-19 crisis period. Doing things differently at DCM – Dom supporting taumai with Money Management in the courtyard, and Rob manning our 0800 number service for taumai from his home. It is important that we are able to provide appropriate levels of support related to the assessed vulnerability of the taumai. We have identified a group of the most marginalised taumai – these have been assigned to a support team and they will be supported across a number of key domains, including money management/access to income, food support, emergency housing, connection to mental health supports, and access to medication. Kaimahi are also rostered to share the task of supporting rough sleepers into emergency housing over this period. Where possible, kaimahi are keeping in touch with taumai who they are keyworking by calling them on the phones we have provided them with; we have also set up an 0800 number for taumai to call us on. As always, as we are able to lift up our taumai, in turn they lift us up; it is something very special to be part of this important mahi. As Stephanie reflected at the end of a very different Monday afternoon Foodbank session this week: “It has truly been very moving to be able to support our taumai at this time. Today a number of people came to us for food support. We were able to send them away with a generous selection of canned and dried foods, fresh fruit and veges, bread, milk and frozen meals. But more than that, we reminded them that we are still here for them, that so much has changed, but DCM is only a phone call away. As we spoke with taumai out in Lukes Lane, with spaces set up to ensure that we maintained and modelled safe distances, we asked them how things were going for them. People were in tears, they were so touched by the support and community that DCM continues to offer them.” Many of you have made donations for us to purchase phones for our taumai – one of our key responses to keeping in touch during this difficult time. Every day we hear uplifting stories from our kaimahi about taumai who have received and are using these phones. Nani shares one below, about a man who says very little. At the other extreme, yesterday Natalia received a very lengthy and reflective text from a man she has provided with a phone. He ended the text with this reflection – we couldn't have put it better ourselves: "We need to remind ourselves how lucky we are to be in Aotearoa, not only are we pioneers of the world, adversity brings us together. History has proven that. Maybe this is what we need to get us all together, to build again real communities". <!-- --> How can I help? When our seasonal kai for autumn (ngahuru) was not able to go ahead earlier this month, the wonderful people from Wellington’s Sikh community who were to prepare this community meal for our taumai, brought down 100 delicious pre-cooked meals, which we were able to hand out at our Foodbank. We have always known that DCM sits at the centre of a community that is totally committed to supporting us in our work to end homelessness. But at times like this, we are reminded of it daily, as so many of you have got in touch to ask what you can do to help. And of course your support is needed now more than ever. The Sustaining Tenancies team - Moses, Sia, Poutalie, Alan and Nani. This photo was taken 11 March at a mihi whakatau to welcome new team member, Poutalie. A few short weeks later, it is difficult to believe that we were all able to stand so close together just the other day! This year, we are introducing you to some of our kaimahi, the amazing team of people here at DCM who support taumai to access and sustain housing. Nani joined DCM's Sustaining Tenancies team last September. This team works with people at risk of homelessness, supporting them to sustain their tenancies and thrive in their homes. Tell us a little more about yourself, Nani. My full name is Utuagiagi Taupau; Utuagiagi is the name of my iwi on the island of Salua Manono Tai, and Taupau is my dad’s last name and title name. I love my Samoan culture, it has moulded me as a person and taught me all about love and respect, not only for myself but for all those who I come face to face with. I went to school just down the road from home: Russell School, Brandon Intermediate and – the best days of my life – Porirua College. What have you most enjoyed about your time at DCM so far? I’ve enjoyed meeting new people every day. It's also amazing to be able to work with and learn from my amazing team leader, Sia Toomaga. She continues to empower and encourage me to do better and I am very grateful for this. Your favourites... Food? Spicy fried chicken, taro, mum’s chop suey. Sport? Volley ball, touch and rugby. Film? War Room. Thing to do as a child? Playing gutter ball and of course eating. Whakatauki? “Ua fuifui fa’atasi ae vao ese’ese” – “We are from different parts of the forest, but connected in one cause”. At DCM we often share “moments” from our interactions with taumai. What’s a special “moment” you enjoying sharing with others? D is a man who doesn’t say very much. As you know, we have been working hard to provide our taumai with phones – this is so important at this very challenging time for everyone. I gave D his new phone, and I called him to test it. As his phone rang, my name came up as the caller, and he says very loudly: “Hey, it’s you; it’s Nani calling!” This was a moment for me, because D really only responds to his voices, or says yes and no. Hon. Dame Patsy Reddy hosted a reception to celebrate DCM’s 50th birthday. This also provided an opportunity to recommit to our vision of ending homelessness, and to reflect on what we all need to do to better support this vision going forward. We share some key sound bytes from the speeches delivered by Dame Patsy and by DCM Director Stephanie McIntyre at Government House. "One of my predecessors, Sir Paul Reeves, was descended from those people who lived in Aro Pā, and he talked about the pain experienced by his tipuna when they lost their homes there in the early days of settlement in Wellington. "So I think Sir Paul would be pleased that an organisation dedicated to finding homes for the homeless is now in that very locality, particularly given that a large proportion of DCM’s taumai are Māori. "We all know that shelter is a basic human right, and that individuals can’t address other issues or explore their aspirations if they don’t have a roof over their heads. "It must be particularly challenging for DCM and its partners to be working at a time when there just aren’t enough houses for Wellington’s population, let alone the range of accommodation options to suit the needs of the people who walk in DCM’s door.” - Dame Patsy Reddy Morris Wong, President of the Wellington Branch of the New Zealand Dental Association with the former President, Gavin Cho, at the reception at Government House; both are volunteers at DCM's emergency Dental Service. "Over the last year, DCM has grown to the point where we now have the human resources to support people in to houses, and to provide the wrap-around support and intensive case management they need. The irony is, however, that we haven’t got the bricks and mortar. "Last year we were able to support 85 people from homelessness into houses, but this year, in the midst of a very significant housing crisis, we are really struggling to access homes for our taumai. This is something we need to do together, and this is why my key message to you all tonight is this. "If you or anyone you know has a rental property or is thinking about investing in a rental property, please speak to us. We can offer landlords a 'no hassles' service – guaranteed rent, no fees, maintenance sorted and funded – and you will be providing a whare for a person who is experiencing homelessness." - Stephanie McIntyre, Director, DCM <!-- --> Meet Junior This year, we are introducing you to some of our kaimahi, the amazing team of people who support taumai to access and sustain housing. Junior Leota joined us in October 2019. He is working with the Aro Mai Housing First team, getting people with long histories of homelessness in to a permanent home, and supporting them to get to a good place in all aspects of their lives. What have you most enjoyed about your time at DCM so far? I’ve enjoyed seeing a lot of our taumai come out of their current position, homeless or at risk of homelessness, into a more stable one. Seeing the happy look on their faces from a good end result is priceless. What have you learned about homelessness since you started at DCM? It can be a long road for someone to move out of homelessness. Patience is important. Be sensitive and compassionate toward their situation. Sometimes you just want people to snap out of bad habits, but there may be a lifetime of trauma behind it. DCM is keeping me humble! When people ask you how they can be part of the solution to homelessness, what do you suggest? I would suggest bringing people who are homeless to a service like this – like DCM. Find places that can provide the right level of support for them. Find the people who really care, and introduce them to us. What is your favourite…? Food? Cream donuts.  Waiata? Whakataka Te Hau.  Sport? Volleyball.  Film? Enter the Dragon. (I love Bruce Lee.) What’s on your bucket list? Get a lot healthier and eat better. Less donuts! At DCM we often share “moments” from our interactions with taumai. What’s a special “moment” you enjoying sharing with others? I have enjoyed the best moment – finding permanent housing for people who have been homeless for a long, long time. Our latest taumai to be housed was teary-eyed when he got to view his place. We saw a burden lifted off his shoulders – he no longer has to worry about where to go or where to sleep. And his kids can come and stay with him now. Getting a roof over your head is truly life-changing. <!-- --> Foodbank shortage As Junior has noted, it is very special to see people who have been homeless for a long time move into a permanent home. But with this comes new challenges – adjusting to the realities of their new living situation, paying rent, electricity and other bills. Often there is very little left for food. DCM’s foodbank is busy year-round, but as our mahi has expanded, we are visiting more and more people in their new homes, supporting them to sustain their tenancy and to thrive in all aspects of their lives. Being able to offer food support from time to time is an important part of this, and our foodbank is busier than ever. We are now very short of many items, and we seek your support to re-stock the shelves. line-height:150% !important; } } December Update from DCM - together we can end homelessness A gift from our taumai to you We come to the end of a season when many of us have been able to enjoy time with our families and friends, and have given and received gifts. Tuku atu, tuku mai - the spirit and practice of generosity and reciprocity - is very important to us here at DCM. Being able to give as well as receive enhances the mana of all of us. Over this Christmas period, many of you have generously provided gifts for our taumai – people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. And so now it is time for us to offer YOU a gift. One of the gifts our taumai can share is the gift of their stories, the stories of what success looks like, of the life-changing work that is possible thanks to your support and our shared commitment to ending homelessness. Wayne's view It’s a stunner of a view from Wayne’s 10th floor whare. He can gaze out across Te Aro to Wellington Harbour and Mt Victoria. Enjoy, reflect, and know that your support has made this all possible. <!-- --> 250 dental sessions This month, we ran our 250th dental session here at DCM. What a phenomenal gift to the most marginalised people in our city this service is. "I've been putting up with sore front teeth for eight years and recently haven’t been able to eat properly. Within an hour of walking in to DCM, all of my problem teeth had been extracted. The dentist was kind, polite and thorough and I’m just so happy with the result. The alternative would have been to keep putting up with the pain for another eight years." (Simon) "I came in to DCM to talk about housing, and heard about the DCM dental service. I haven’t seen a dentist since I was a child – I extract my own teeth whenever they become too painful. Wow, I just feel so good after seeing the dentist here." (Robert) Bill ended up in the Night Shelter after family problems compounded by his meth addiction saw him sleeping at a reserve. He came to DCM after he heard from other taumai about the hospitality available here. Like all taumai who come to DCM Bill was asked if he needed a dental appointment - and now off meth he had started to notice that he was experiencing severe dental pain. Bill was able to be treated and though he has a long road ahead on his journey to wellbeing, he is now free from the worst pain caused by 20+ years of addiction. We have a lengthy waiting list for dental appointments, and urgently need more dentists and dental assistants to become part of our amazing team. Please ask your own dentist if they volunteer at DCM – if they do, lift them up for the very practical way in which they are part of the solution to homelessness. If they don’t, encourage them to get in touch. <!-- --> Together we can end homelessness - at Christmas and in the New Year At this time of year, we are reminded every day of the kindness and commitment of the people of Wellington to our taumai and our mahi. If you follow us on Facebook, you will have seen some of our stories about the range of people and organisations who have brought in food, gifts, baking, donations, their time and their skills. From our friends at Live Wires who paid for all the items we need to prepare 200 Christmas hampers for taumai, to those of you who offered to buy us something we really need and can enjoy together (yes, we were able to purchase an entire new set of chairs for everyone who spends time at Te Hāpai!), to the people of Ngaio Union Church who bought gifts for taumai spending their first Christmas in their new home, to the many locals and workplaces who brought in supplies for our foodbank, to the Nota Bene concert at Prefab...the list goes on and on. As we move into a new year, you may like to reflect on new ways you can become involved in 2020 – here is some food for thought. Here we share Arthur's story - this is what we can achieve together. <!-- --> Home at last Arthur’s Naenae home is spotless, his laundry is on the line and a stone he painted with Māori motifs is displayed on the mantelpiece of the one bedroom home he’s lived in since July. He’s clearly delighted to have his own whare after months of being without shelter, either sleeping rough on Wellington’s streets or at the Wellington Night Shelter. “I’ve become quite domesticated,” he says, offering his visitors a cup of coffee. Arthur came to Wellington from the Bay of Plenty in February this year. He knew no one in the city and ended up living on the street. After someone he met told him about DCM, he took himself off to Lukes Lane. DCM staff worked with him on a plan to get him into his own whare as soon as possible, but DCM’s support has gone far beyond that. Thanks to the DCM Dental Service, Arthur now has a new set of teeth. “I can now eat properly!” he says. “DCM helped me with pretty much everything. They gave me food parcels, supported me to get my licence back and got a copy of my birth certificate.” A significant barrier for many people in Arthur’s situation is they don’t have the identification required to do many day-to-day things. Arthur also had his hearing checked by DCM’s audiologist; he was very surprised by what the audiologist found. “The lady pulled big wads of wax - I was freaked out! I was just sitting in reception and they asked me if I’d like my ears tested. I found they were all blocked up. That’s the kind of thing DCM does – I can hear much better now.” Finding full time work is the next thing on Arthur’s agenda and he’s been labouring part-time at a job found via one of DCM’s staff. “I’d really like to go out on a fishing boat, so I’m working towards that. I would like to work full time. I’ve got too much time on my hands at the moment.” With DCM’s support and DCM staff regularly visiting him, Arthur has become used to living in the Hutt Valley. “At first I did feel I was too far away from my support networks in Wellington. But everyone was telling me to stick with it and give it a go. “I didn’t want to let anyone down, and there are a lot of people there helping me. If I’d given up this house I’d have gone back to the bottom of the list and ended up back in the night shelter.” And that’s something Arthur doesn’t want, because the best thing about having his own whare? “Being able to sleep in and not having to go back out on the street by 7:30am.” <!-- --> Together, we can make a positive difference in people’s lives. Wellington's annual DCM Bookfair has been raising funds for vulnerable Wellingtonians for 23 years - but unless a new storage venue is found, this year's event will be the last. There's never a shortage of donations but the storage unit DCM has relied on will not be available next year, leaving the future of the book fair in doubt. Every year, book lovers flock to the DCM Bookfair on Wellington's waterfront to grab an armful of bargains in support of vulnerably housed citizens. But unless a new storage venue is found, this year's event will be the last. Lee-Anne Duncan reports. It's catnip to bibliophiles, that smell. It's the bouquet of books, heavy with dust and knowledge, to be stacked and sorted, packed then transported to Wellington's Shed 6 for next Saturday's DCM Bookfair. This year is the 23rd time hundreds of volunteers have poured thousands of hours into collecting, sorting, boxing and setting out nearly 100,000 books for the country's biggest book fair. The event is also DCM's biggest single fundraiser. Formerly known as the Downtown Community Ministry, DCM works "at the serious end" of homelessness. Along with supporting people to find sustainable accommodation, DCM provides a variety of services to support vulnerable Wellingtonians. The organisation calls the people they work with "taumai", meaning "to settle", preferring it to the less personal "client". While DCM receives funds from local and central government to carry out some of its work, donations and fundraising events like this one are its lifeblood. If this book fair is as successful as those past, a near quarter century of book fairs will have collectively raised at least $2 million to fund DCM's work. "That's $2 million we haven't had to ask of central or local government agencies," says Stephanie McIntyre, DCM's director for the past 14 years. "The only reason we have been able to raise that money is through the generosity of Wellingtonians who donate their books, the people who buy them, and of course the volunteers who give their time to make it all happen." A fundraiser's success often comes down to those volunteers, especially for an event as large and complex as DCM's annual book fair. But this year's event might be its last, as the planned development of Shelly Bay means the Wellington City Council-owned warehouse used to store and sort donated books won't be available next year. "All this is absolutely at risk," says McIntyre. "We have had zero response trying to find another warehouse. We'd love to have another book fair as it's become such a classic Wellington thing and it's essential fundraising for us. Next year is our 50th birthday and it would be a great shame not to have a book fair in such an important year." DCM director Stephanie McIntyre. Many – if not most – of the fair's volunteers give their time year after year. A core group of about 30 helpers travel to the warehouse on Thursdays or Saturdays, or both, for generally five or six hours a day every week between April and August. There, wrapped up against the winter chill, they receive donations, sort the books into categories, then into subcategories, and sometimes even into micro-categories. "I've found quite a few books on grief. I'm hoping I can get enough together to make a section of its own," says long-time volunteer Wendy Nelson. "And I've got all these diet books. This year we seem to have a lot of paleo books." Spirited exchanges have been known to happen over categories. All Blacks Don't Cry by John Kirwan, for example: "Is that sport or mental health? I even found copy in Psychology earlier," says Nelson. If there's more than one copy – and often there is – the books can be allotted wherever book seekers may think to find it. A marine biologist, Nelson works full time as a principal scientist at Niwa but spends her Saturdays sorting. She's been involved in the book fair every year since the first, in 1996. "The then director, Helen Walch, said she'd had this great idea to hold a second-hand book fair as a fundraiser that would engage the volunteers and community. "I thought it sounded like a good idea – I like books, so why not get involved? DCM does such important work, and is such an important part of Wellington. Sometimes it's hard to know how to contribute, but this is a way for us to do our own small bit."  Volunteer Wendy Nelson, a marine biologist and book lover. Each year DCM supports about 1000 people who are experiencing homelessness or in danger of becoming homeless. But the work DCM does goes far beyond putting a roof over their heads. Every DCM day begins with a karakia and waiata. DCM kaimahi (staff) and their taumai gather to give thanks for the new day at 9am when the organisation's doors open in Te Aro's Lukes Lane. Social workers are on hand to talk to taumai to get to the heart of why they're experiencing homelessness. They support the person to access a benefit and manage their money, find and sustain housing, and connect to whānau and culture, health and other services. Statistics New Zealand defines homelessness as: "Living situations where people with no other options to acquire safe and secure housing are without shelter, in temporary accommodation, sharing accommodation with a household, or living in uninhabitable housing." Research by Otago School of Medicine in 2016 put the number of New Zealanders living this way at more than 40,000 people, nearly 1 per cent of our total population – the highest rate of homelessness in the OECD. It's difficult to accurately quantify homelessness. During this year's census, DCM staff worked with Statistics NZ staff to encourage and support people who were homeless to complete the census forms. "We explained that government funding decisions are made on census data, so filling out the census made sure they were counted," says McIntyre. DCM's own data vividly describes the increase in demand. Over the past five years, the number of people who are homeless that come to DCM for support has increased by more than a third. "Even more worrying, the number of people we see who are actually without shelter – so rough sleeping, or sleeping in cars – has more than doubled." McIntyre expects the number of people DCM supports to increase this year. "When you get a severe housing crisis, as we have now, it's the most vulnerable who are kicked to the end of the line. As housing gets harder for everyone it gets especially hard for these people, which makes our work even more necessary." In May, the Government announced $100 million to address homelessness – $37 million of that was allocated to find places by the end of this winter, with the rest spent over four years on the Housing First programme. While DCM will be at the forefront of delivering Housing First in Wellington, the organisation will continue to rely on volunteers and donations to pay for its core services. We visit four Saturdays from sale day. There's a stiff nor'wester whipping the waves a few metres from the warehouse. Out in the harbour, a rare southern right whale is leading the news. Te Amo Roberts, another volunteer and someone DCM has supported, reports he saw the whale on his way in. He stirs himself a coffee between breaking down cardboard boxes and helping with some of the "grunt work". Volunteer Te Amo Roberts received assistance from DCM in the past. Today, he's an important part of the book fair team. "There are some biscuits on the sideboard, Te Amo – Cameo Cremes," says McIntyre, who's holding a brief meeting with a small group of volunteers, a long, tightly written to-do list on her crossed knee. Cut sandwiches and fruit are boxed on the sideboard, along with those Cameo Cremes. Everyone knows a volunteer army sorts and packs on its stomach. Most of the fair's book-sorting volunteers stick to their areas of expertise – a retired anaesthetist is set to work deciding which medical books are still useful, and a war buff flicks through the military books. They determine which books will sell and for how much, which subjects are likely to be "in"' this year, and which – judging by the number of those donated – are on their way out. The volunteers' knowledge also means they're well-placed to spot a valuable book. Then, with the aid of local auction house expertise and internet bookseller searches, a price is applied and the book is included in the high-value stack. "We do get some amazing finds where people might not have realised they've gifted us an extraordinary treasure, but we have no way of reuniting it with its owner," says McIntyre, who, drawing on her own pre DCM music industry career knowledge, found a rare Beatles book some fairs back. "At the same time I'm sure we've had books we've sold for $2 that may have been worth hundreds. But you've got to be philosophical." A hand-drawn diagram of the Shed 6 book fair layout is pinned to the wall. Each table has a number assigned to a book category: children's, history, health, fiction (so much fiction), New Zealand, art, and so on. The more work done now, the better 100 or so volunteers on set-up day know exactly where everything fits. Taking too many books to fit a category's allocated section would lead to chaos – setting out 90,000 books is a precise science. "We've got a phenomenally good offering of children's books this year, so we've had to shuffle up some other things to accommodate that," says McIntyre, scrutinising the diagram. "The foreign languages are fine but the music is the big headache at the moment," says one volunteer, popping in to give McIntyre a quick update on her areas. The team is following a packing plan with scheduled revision points. According to the plan, by this day 75 per cent of books must be sorted, tallied and packed on pallets (each holding about 800 books) ready for transportation to Shed 6 at dawn the day before fair day. With clipboard in hand, Alexi Manouilenko is responsible for the tally. DCM stepped in when he needed support a couple of years ago, which led to him volunteering on fair day in 2016. "As well as wanting to give back to DCM, I'd been out of work for a while and people are reluctant to hire you when you don't have anything to explain your time off. I realised the best way to get back into work was to volunteer to show I could work. I already knew DCM so I volunteered for two years. That led to some paid work and now I have a full-time job with DCM."  Part of Manouilenko's job is to decide how many books in each category should go to the fair and use his maths skills to keep tabs on the packing. "I look at the previous two years to see how many books were taken in each category and how many were sold. From that I try to guess at what we should take this year, and I tell the volunteers how many boxes in each category to pack." This level of organisation is why DCM must close the book on donations four weeks out from the fair. Even on the last day, every few minutes book-toting donors poke their heads around the peeling-painted door. "I just want to drop some books," says a man, setting down his burden. "Thank you, mate," says McIntyre. "Come to the fair and buy a whole lot more, won't you?" Surely he will – book lovers only clear their shelves to fill them with new finds. While the DCM Bookfair is certainly about finding new homes for old books, it's also about raising funds to support marginalised Wellingtonians into homes of their own. Nelson remembers when the team was ecstatic to raise $15,000 – now the book fair raises around $100,000, which goes directly into funding DCM's work with people experiencing homelessness. It's that work, as well as their shared love of books, that motivates the volunteers. Volunteer Tamara Morton with stacks of books ready for the fair. Tamara Morton is a consulate advisor at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, but spends her Saturday mornings in the warehouse's fiction section, estimating the book-buying public's appetite for Philippa Gregory and Dan Brown. "When I was living overseas, circumstances happened that I found myself looking for a place to live. It was short-lived and I've never been truly homeless, but I can't forget the anguish that came with thinking, 'What am I going to do? I've got nowhere to go.' To be able to help an organisation with the resources to address that is why I do this for DCM. "There's also the huge bonus of making connections with people you wouldn't meet in a lifetime of routine days. The people who work here come from all sorts of backgrounds and different stages of life. It's really cute to see the cheeky banter that goes on between a Millennial and a Baby Boomer. It's really delightful to be a part of that." Nelson is busy assessing travel guides (nothing published before 2010 goes on sale). "What I love about the book fair is that everyone's winning," she says. "The people off-loading their books feel they're going to a good place, the people who rock up to the book fair get fantastic bargains, and the people who volunteer get satisfaction from contributing to something. He plans to stand in lower Cuba Mall and charge passers by $20 to cut off a lock of hair. It all happens Saturday 20th June at midday outside Custom Printed Clothing. All the money raised will go to the Wellington Night Shelter.
