- Being kaitiaki to 250 hectares of regenerating native bush and 50 kilometres of first-rate mountain bike track is a world away from life on the road as an exhibition specialist. But five weeks ago Mark Kent left his role as Exhibition Touring and Project Manager after 21 years at Te Papa to become Mākara Peak’s first-ever dedicated Park Ranger – and he’s loving it. “This new position has been years in the planning, with the role created to support the community, especially the Mākara Peak Supporters who are particularly active in the park.”

Cycling advocates award Fellowship to improve community accountability
- Cycle Wellington
- Cycle Wellington has awarded the Alastair Smith Memorial Fellowship for 2021-22 to Jonathan Coppard. The Fellowship is dedicated to furthering the work of veteran Wellington cycling advocate, Alastair Smith, who passed away in November 2019. It has a value of $5000. Jonathan Coppard's project will improve the inclusivity and diversity of cycling advocacy. “Unfortunately for many decades now, Wellington's street environment has been so hostile to cyclists that only a few people feel able to ride bikes,” he says. “This has led to a situation where cycling activism is unrepresentative of the wider Wellington community. We need to do better.” “We are now starting to see a change in both the physical and cultural approach to streets. Bike lanes are changing the street environment so that more people feel able to ride a bike. It is essential that Cycle Wellington changes at the same time so that we are representative of the people we advocate for, and can contribute to the work required to address inequalities in Wellington.”

Broken down runabout discovered while searching for another
- Coastguard Mana
- Operation Details Date/Time: Sun, 07/11/2021 - 18:30 - 21:30 Operation Type: CG Operation (good samaritan) People Assisted: 6 Total Volunteer Hours: 12 Whilst searching for a vessel that had broken down with 4 pob and requested a tow home as a non-member we discovered another one that had broken down on "the bridge" near Mana Island. We marked their location and told them we would be back for them once we had located the first vessel. We found the first vessel under tow by someone else coming back into the channel. After confirming that it was them and that they no longer required our assistance (a non-member tow that would have cost them money) we returned to the second vessel.
